Steel Magnolias' was based on a true story🤔
Shelby, the character Julia Roberts plays in the film, is based on Harling's sister, Susan, who died of complications from type 1 diabetes in 1985 !

Miss my baby boy so much 💔😭. 6 years later still feels like it all happened the other day, it turns you inside out and upside down, you die with them and what's left is a completely different person. But you have to find the things or people that make life good and keep you going.... Even tho them being gone makes life hurt, it also gives you more of an appreciation for it to... When she said, I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life. I felt that but in a different way. I had my daughter 3 months ago and I gave her up for adoption. I know the family that adopted her and we're very close. I felt that in that way. I was there when she was born and I was there when they took her from the hospital. They've been great. They let me hold her all I wanted in the hospital and they gave me an hour alone with her before they took her from the hospital. I just talked to her and I told her that I was always going to be there for her and that I love her and that she was going to have a big family that loves her. I know it's different like I said but I could really relate to that. Before anyone judges me, her father has not been in the picture and he is not a good person and I knew that he was going to do her more harm than good. I know I did the right thing because as I said, she has a big family and most importantly, a mother and father and Big brother who Loved her. I'd say most importantly her father. She deserves a father who loves and validates her and she would not have gotten that from her father if I had kept her. Plus I'm just not in a position to take care of her on my own but they said that I will be allowed to be in her life as much as I want and that they will make sure she knows how much I love her. Wasn't easy but being a good parent means doing what is best for your child even if it hurts you. Sometimes I think that that's going to be the thing that breaks me but I'm not going to let her father doing what he did be the reason that breaks me. I'm not going to give him that satisfaction. I'm just going to be here for her as much as I can and when she turns 18, she will always know that my door is open to her and that I love her. I'm still her first mother and even though I won't be raising her, I love her more than life itself. I could just relate to when she said that in a way.

When my Aunt Carniece passed away from Type 1 twelve years ago, I was ANGRY! I questioned God for awhile. How? Why? How could you take the kindest person I'd known? All that suffering for nothing. For her to miss out on the countless births, graduations, first this or thats, and the weddings. But after a long time of being angry with him, I had to remember that God gave her to us and he needed her back home with him. He came to take her away from all of the suffering, the countless procedures, surgeries, insulin shots, and pains that came with her illness. This scene is what I felt for months so I couldn't even imagine the anger Shelby's mother felt.

I never asked why my daughter was suffering and dying for 5 years. There is no answer in this lifetime. God needs to answer to me, not the other way around. If you think that's blasphemy, say it to my face and I'll send you to Jesus for the answer.

I've always wondered if others felt this way, I timidly admit that I kinda agree, because of the huge risks that she was always aware of but dismissed them... Shelby took a very dangerous path health wise to have that baby, and the result was tragic, it cost her life, left a bereft hubby and baby who needed her, and forever left grief for her family. Yes, it's an extraordinary bittersweet story and ultimately it was her choice, but there is always a very fine line between the "I can have it all" philosophy that I think came in part from Shelby being oversheltered as a kid, and "I'll keep my health and be a foster mom or an auntie and I'll probably be still walking around 50 yrs from now." I know if I was type I diabetic I would not have put my health at further risk. But that's me. Shelby had both this terrible disease and a crazy naiveness and innocence about it and life in general and ultimately, it doomed her.

I'm sorry I don't agree, not as a mother or as a daughter. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breaths away.
People can't live their lives for other people, it's their life and they have to live it for themselves.
Robert Harling was inspired to write this from his sister's life but it's not an exact blow by blow of it.
I seen a talk he did were he said his sister went into the hospital for a simple procedure to have the stint in her arm adjusted and never woke up. 😥
That could have happened even if she hadn't had a baby, or any number of things could have happened like they do to other people all around the world. Car accidents, crimes, ect..
My point is, she knew what would make her life complete and she had every right to go after it.
There's no guarantee that Robert's sister Susan would have lived even if she hadn't had the baby, but because she did choose to have one, a piece of her was left behind to comfort her family after she was called home. And there is a man out there somewhere who knows he was wanted and cherished so very much by his mother. That's a very precious gift that many people don't get even when their mother continues to live.
Yes the best case scenario would have been for her to survive to raise the baby, but life has a tendency to side swipe people.
This scene is a replica of the intense pain of new grief. Though you never get over a loss, if you allow yourself to accept and heal, this intense pain fades and is filled by gratitude of having them in your life and the memories they left behind.
I'm sure Robert Harling's family doesn't regret the child's birth, they just regret Susan's death and wish she was still here.

Or selfless to what her needs were and wanted to make a family for her husband because she thought that was something she should do as his wife. Unfortunately because of the frailty of her body she couldn't do all the things she wanted to do and birth in that one child was the last thing she could do.

She felt pressure from her husband, no doubt. This was hinted at a couple of times in the story. He seemed like an immature jerk.
