Sometimes a movie is so perfect and timeless and classic that no remake can even come close
I absolutely agree. They should've never did a remake of the Original. Some things the producers and writers should just leave well enough alone fr! 🤦♀️🙄
I have to agree, Queen Latifah is one of my favorites, but her Steel Magnolias performance....(snores)
I feel so bad in saying this and hope that it is not taken wrong but the remake was awful. I could watch the ending scene that I have seen it over and over again where the mother breaks down in tears after the funeral from the original Steel Magnolias and I breakdown and I lose it. But just happen to come upon the original tonight (I have seen the whole remake by the way) in just that same moment tonight, and nothing. Sorry remake but it just doesn't compare. I feel bad saying this but some movies just should not be remade whether it be politicaly correct or not. Now this statement may throw people in rages but it is true. Even if it were all White it is still the same it should not be remade.PS: Love Queen Latifah as an actor especially in Chicago. This though was not the spot.
I still rewatch Chicago cause she was in it
She wasn't cast for the right part. She would have been better as Truvy. Though, the remake just wasn't good, period.
Race doesn't even come to mind for me when I watched this remake and I am black. You got all these actresses from the north trying to talk southern and its not genuine! The original is a classic(I'm watching now actually) and some movies do not need to be remade!! That Sparkle remake sucked also!!!
Exactly!!
I must agree.
I think this cast was not qualified. The remake of an all black and powerful cast done right would've been a beautiful remake to behold.
Shelby should have been played by Hallee Berry or Kerry Washington
MLynn should've been played by Lynn Whitefield or Angela Bassett
Clairee we can keep Phylicia Rashaad
Truvy should've been played by Taraji P. Hanson or Monique
Anelle has Kimberly Elise name written all over it
Ouiser should've been none other than Jennifer Lewis.
It would've been a hit, something real serious if they would've gotten the right cast.
I think Julie Roberts is Shelby to most people so.they had a heard task.
@Pepe Parlote I'm black, and I think the same.
This just showcases how wonderful the original cast and director was.
This scene in the original movie was iconic. I’m livid how lifetime did this
I agree they should’ve just left it alone and let a classic stay a classic.
I absolutely love the remake of steel magnolias
Here here😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The girl that played Shelby didn't do good at this scene :/
I have type one diabetes. The original was more accurate.
Baby they didn't do good at any scene. Queen Latifah ain't nobody's mother.
You can definitely not watch the Original version of the movie and then watch this one!
I watched the original so many times as a kid and in my life. Just watch it for the first time in prob 10 yrs. and then decided to check out the remake and I’m not saying it’s bad. But the first was pure perfection, funny emotional so much love and tears. This version just looked so juvenile compared. But I have a biased opinion bc I’ve seen the original first.
natashaaws YOLO I disagree
I just didn’t like the girl they chose and how she portrayed Shelby.
I still can’t comprehend what was the purpose of remaking such a classic???
To be very blunt, they wanted to make a black cast version.
@Paul G I couldn’t agree more
Could you imagine if they did the opposite?
I agree Pedro they should’ve left it alone
I like this version too. I'm born and raised in east TN, and this is really good
That was awful. Who's horrible idea was this???
The original is soooooo much better!!!!
Wow!! Julia Roberts is an amazing actress! Now I see it more than before.
Yup. Agree.
Yeah they needed someone top notch to play this role like hallie berry or Megan good
@@mermaidreviews4693 especially Halle Berry because she’s type 1 diabetic. So she would really understand
cannot touch the original movie. Performances are flat with no passion. Shame.
cljacobson27 agreed
The only passable performances in this remake were Jill Scott’s Truvy and Alfre Woodard’s Ouiser. Them being the exception, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Same here. This movie has all the feel of a school play. Ouiser's opening "hammered doo doo" scene killed it for me just as the movie was getting started.
@@NahualliUoxtitla “Rhet kill!”. lol. “i aint crazy, ive just been in a very bad mood for the past 30 years”.
The actor that played Shelby was AWFUL!!!!!!!
I watched MMMMaaаagnoliа full moviee herе twitter.com/a8d3191f6af97e3c4/status/822790545076432897 Steel Magnоlias Juice Lifetime
I think it was good both were beautiful.
@@davidcampbell8865 well good for you David Campbell you're probably one of two that like this movie
Yeah she looked so bored during this scene. She went from looking like she heard something to looking like "this scene is so boring to film."
Condola Phylicia Rashad's daughter
The thing I like most about this movie is that it goes into more details of Shelby's condition than the original did. In the original, Shelby was diabetic, and they never really explained just why she shouldn't have children, for which they were criticized.
I know this is a long time ago you said this but you've gotten have been on drugs this remake was horrible is a black remake of something that was done perfectly by white people and shouldn't have been messed with
@@before120You must have been on drugs when you made this comment - maybe instead of getting so mad about a “black remake,” you could just not engage with it. Nobody’s forcing it on you.
I like Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad. But this movie *stinks*, and the performances are flat. When I watch the original movie, I feel the emotions that one is expected to feel; the emotions that one would feel if they were watching their loved one going through diabetic shock. I don't feel that way when I'm watching this clip from the remake.
As a diabetic I think this is a more accurate depiction of a low blood sugar, it’s not so dramatic all the time.
Shelby was a special case though. people like that really get aggressive during their attacks.
My mother was one of them.
this feels like a poorly produced high school play with nervous 'actors' regurgitating lines on a page rather than actual acting. shame.
And then they made a Beaches remake... my goodness why?
Totally agreed.
@@paulg6527 ikr don't get me wrong I love idina menzel but why do they have to remake that movie
I'm confused?? was this made for tv? terrible delivery of great lines
This movie was amazing, but like any other movie, the original is always better
On the whole, this was a completely unnecessary, and ultimately unsatisfying remake. But then again, so are about 99.9% of all the remakes and re-imaginings and reboots Hollywood is shoving down our throats these days.
Jill Scott did that accent perfectly
Me too and my mom was bawling, I cried during this part too
Original was waaaayyyy better
Who cares what you ppl think I think they both good so shut up
All these people saying the performance is terrible should try being a type One diabetic and having a bad hypo like this, this is pretty accurate, and well acted.
@alfred arroyo thank you
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this remake was a JOKE!!
What an insult to the original cast.
i want to like this but it just seems so rushed, they dont have natural pauses in their dialog at all ... i wish the was a "remake' and not an almost shot for shot re-imaging. it would seem more natural for them to have the same plot but to have dialog that fits each woman individually, letting the personality of each woman shine, the way they did it dose nothing but make you compare every second to the the original movie .
It looked like a rehearsal of the scene rather than the shooting of it. They're just going through the motions without emotion. You wanna see real masterful acting, check out the 1989 Steel Magnolias. There's no topping that.
Exactly why it was a straight to Blockbuster rental. Ha ha, oh wait it’s not even on Netflix!
I loved this movie and thought it was very good!
I think that you are the third person in the world that agrees to this
The problem with "remakes" is that most times people expect for actresses playing the same character to be EXACTLY the same.
It's not going to happen. Why? Because that isn't what they were going for. Shelby is the character, but Julia Roberts and Condola Rashad are two completely different personas.
Remember, this is first and foremost a STAGEPLAY. Characters played by different people will never be the same. If you went and saw the stageplay, you would probably say that the play itself couldn't touch the 1989 film which would be counterproductive considering without the stageplay, you wouldn't really have gotten the movies.
The 2012 adaptation was a more contemporary version with influence from Black American culture. To me, it's like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Wiz". The same story told through two different cultures. Comparing the two is like apples and oranges.
I'd agree with you except as someone above said, this is a line for line remake. Which makes it very boring & stiff.
Yeah, tbh I haven't seen the whole remake and I'm a huge fan of the original, but this doesn't look half as bad as the comments are saying. They've got a good cast and it seems fine
First of all the Wiz should have never been done just like Steel Magnolias any or any other movie that was originally a great classic should have never been remade by quote unquote the Black Culture keep that s*** over there we have our great movies don't f*** them up
It's really the performances that's being critiqued. In my opinion, if they didn't try so hard to copy the lines from the 1989 movie (I've never seen the play so I don't know if the lines are the same from that as well) and did their own thing with it while still staying true to the story, then that would've been better. Also maybe chosen someone else to play certain characters like Shelby. No offense to the actress, but she did not do a very good job.
@@before120 racist much
This is hilarious. It's like a youtube cover of an old song
I miss this I remember when I was with my ex boyfriend just for that day and he left for work and I would watch this on CD 💿 😅 I was just a young adult and he was a older guy ,time goes fast I love to watch this just to remember that day❤
the original is always better. its the one movie that my family knows that when it is on to shut up because we all like it.
The best movie I've watched so far
The remake was definitely not that great, but I still cried at the same spot. I actually sobbed more with this one for some reason.
Not that great? Lol. That’s a massive understatement. this is complete garbage
I like Queen Latifah. I've been her fan since Ice Age.
I'm all for remakes since Hollywood has been making them since the beginning of movies. But this was a bad idea and bad acting.
Agree
I agree It wasn't terrible just didn't compare to the original. Same as Beaches now. It just seems like they are running out of ideas for movies. really weird. Bad thing is, is that I think the remake of Beaches sucked. Granted your comment was 2 years ago so did you think this would happen?
This was a lame attempt of a remake. This movie and when they tried to remake beaches are the most saddest and a waist of film ever
It would have been better if it wasn't simply made as a Lifetime Original Movie, I mean Queen Latifah truly knocked it out of the park as M'Lynn!
1:07
Truvy: Should I get her a cookie?
loved Phylicia Rashad as a actress I don't think they should've touched a classic
sorry people but this remake sucks and I only like the orginal it has nothing to do with race but it makes me mad that they think they can remake it with new cast and expect the same results.
This looks awful the original is hands down the best
Then why'd you look darlin?
Sevyn maybe Stacie had the adult reasoning and the strength not to respond to your ridiculous comment but I will. I cannot stand it when people have the comment "If you don't like it why did you watch it"? Most ridiculous question in the world when people give the movie/video a chance and they make a comment. How are people to make a comment on something without watching it duh?One will watch a movie if it is on TV and she gave it a try. That doesn't mean she watched it again. Stupid come up with something a bit more educated then this if you can.
@@yjadalyn1 so we could come on here and tell you that this remake of a black cultured Steel Magnolias is s*** that's why.
Thumbs down on this remake, no one does it better than the original cast and no one else can out-act the original cast no matter who they are.
This movie made me cry 😭 it a good movie tho
Very very different from the other movie but still very very good movie ❤
Im going to watch the original
She Was Great 😂😂❤
totally agree
Queen Latifah has never been convincing playing a mother in my opinion, except to the little girl on Salon, which wasn't a stretch.
This movie was still pretty good. This movie is better than a lot cheap flicks. Its not necessary to use vulgarity to make a point
her mom safe her life
Haven't seen this yet, i like the old one but i wonder how this movie is?
does anybody know the name of the song playing in the back ground ?
Bravebird by Amel Larrieux
I clicked too fast and read the title as Steel Magnolias Juice Time.
This reminds me...to watch the original
Some things you just gotta leave alone
First beaches and now this! When they start making a white version of Soul food we gonna see👀
I liked everyone’s acting, Scott did a perfect accent, Latifah and Rashad are always great, they are such talented actresses. It’s the girl that played Shelby that kinda ruined it for me..
Omg before I ever saw the remake I knew it was a bad idea & this scene proves it. This scene delivery is awful. Everyone delivers their lines flat & straight forward. Theres no intensity or suspense in what's happening to Shelby.
When she died i cried.
Wow...I've never had a low this bad
Maybe its the fact that I haven't seen the original, but I kind of like this one
Cora, definitely watch the original....such a great movie!
Love the first movie, going to watch the second one cause I like the actresses in it. However, watching this scene I felt it was a little underwhelming, seems like it's too perfect looking. However, I'm willing to give this movie a chance.
@Niki Martin calm down it was a good movie okay. And I love Sleepaway camp.
i think the remake of a classic was great especially because it's an all-black cast
Any “remake” is hard for fans of the original to like. But I think the main issue with this is that these actresses are all amazing, but they’re almost muted?? Idk. Seems like they weren’t allowed to be as talented as they are.
Shelby is Condola Rashad, the daughter of Phylisha Rashad.
First off, I love Phelicia Rashad and Queen Latifah. I Bet if they took this movie and brought it up NORTH and added northern accents and some inner city culture it would had been a good movie.
I don't mind them remaking the movie mostly because the 1989 movie was based on a play so it wasn't an original creation. I just wish they did a better job. If anything Clairee, Ouiser and Truvy were the only highlights of this version much like in the 1989 movie but in the 1989 movie, everyone did a good job. This Shelby was ok in some scenes but not good in others, Annelle wasn't very convincing as an awkward new girl and Queen Latifah, as much as she's a good actress, she just wasn't a good choice for M'Lynn. There are two things this version had that I wish the 1989 movie would've included. One is the scene where Jackson and M'Lynn had that talk after Shelby's pregnancy announcement and the heartwarming and heartbreaking scene between Shelby and M'Lynn during the transplant. Although at the same time, Shelby looked kinda awkward with the way she was holding her hands up while she was crying.
Oh boy...
Such a fantastic cast yet I feel they weren’t being given good direction
Gоood
This scene is so weak, compared to the scene in the original movie. When Julia Roberts' "Shelby" had her diabetic attack, I *felt* the other characters' concern for her. But this version? Nope. I felt nothing, because the performance was weak.
This is good . But just love the actors in the original..
i love queen latifah
I lived the older version.
I was very upset when I heard they were remaking the movie
Parents have to know what to do for their adopted children if they have diabetes in their blood
cool to see a remake but omg queen and phyliss are outstanding actresses no offence its like they are not even trying.
i was waiting for queen to be just as forceful to shelby like field had been in the original and she is just all calm. and the girl playing shelby is just sitting there and barely thrashing and yelling at her mom like in the original
Steel Magnolias (1989) is one of my FAVORITE movies!! Julia Roberts, Shirley McClain, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Fields, Dolly Parton, Darryl Hannah; that is an untouchable ALL STAR cast!!! I don't know what this is. As a fab of the movie and a black woman I very disappointed :(
Not to mention, as a southerner, I am insulted at their lack luster attempts at southern accents....ugh
Reeaaaally greeat movieee. I fooound it heere => twitter.com/a90c075706c170c94/status/822790545076432897
Literally watched this scene for 2 seconds...NOPE! Why????? Would you do this to this great movie!!
not the same! luv the old one better !
What next?!?!
Casablacka?!?!
Maybe 'Gone With The Wind' starring Miley Cyrus-------NOT!!!!!
Was that necessary?
I love your comment but it's probably true they'll try to do something like that to my God and put a Black Culture spin on Tara as well
@@Juliaflo no but they better not do a black Gone With the Wind I'll f****** puke
nope!
Why did they remake this movie???
There is something about this that does not feel right I love queen but magnolias can not be remade
Julia Fiona Roberts simply owned the moment; this, well, I have to do some more research.
This is hilarious 😂 love the queen 👑 but smh 🤦🏻♂️
Queen Latifah did a great job in this movie but i think that Mo'Nique would have been better in this flim
Really
No offense but as a type 1 diabetic myself, Julia Robert's killed her performance of a severe hypoglycemia episode, this was garbage
The women that played Shelby....Girl go back to acting school!!!! I don't why they did a remake of this movie the original was perfect with Dolly parton, Sally fields, Julia Roberts and the other ladies... Perfection 👏
if you dont like the movie then dont watch it. they didnt make it for just for you. i just watched it and its as good as the original one.
I just tried watching this movie and I had to turn it off at the very beginning I can't stand black people trying to talk and act like rich white people or should I say regular white people
Sorry but no..Just not the same.. It's like trying to make George Jefferson with Don Knotts...Don't mess with a classic!!
The writer of the original said the ONLY way he would give the rights up again to re-make it is if it were done with an all black cast. doesn't matter what the skin color is, it's a beautiful story
Why?
This movie would have been so much better if it had more original content and had not been such a direct remake. Queen did what she could but all I see when I watch is a Steel Magnolias remake
Just watched The Original and of course this doesn't come close 🤣😂😂😂🤣
There is absolutely no urgency in this scene. All these talented actresses and the screen is just dead.
It has nothing to do with color...now with that said ..this remake was pretty bad the acting wasnt convincing and was just a thumbs down. Although the scene of shelbys death did make me tear alittle not nearly as much as the original
For once, I actually agree with that. Though I like the 1993 with Dolly Parton, But I say this movie is pretty good too.
Great ! Love you Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, etc.
