I truly believe that this is the equivalent of Godzilla for Peter Jackson's King Kong. A "remake" that recreates the original film, but with modern technology, with many references to the original version.
This movie was really something else. I'm not here to bash on the Monsterverse or Shin Godzilla or anything else from recent years. I loved how chaotic and unsettling Shin was, and I adore the Monsterverse's commitment to the wackier side of kaiju action. We had Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra tag-team fighting against an evil Kong and an Ice Dinosaur in zero gravity for Pete's sake! If you can't find some childish glee in that, you have no soul But Godzilla Minus One was entirely its own thing. To even compare it to the others is like apples to oranges. I've never felt such primal dread from a Godzilla movie before, and I watched Shin in theaters! It was scary when it needed to be, intense in the right spots, and the plot was simple enough that in the wrong director's hands it could have been garbage, but they pulled it off flawlessly in my opinion. I've never felt such connection to the human characters in a kaiju film. It's the first time I've ever rooted AGAINST Godzilla! And I'm not ashamed to admit I cried more than once. This movie was amazing, a worthy successor to the 1954 original. I'd even be comfortable calling it a remake of that movie, maybe not in plot or characters but definitely in tone and spirit. I'm honored to have experienced it in theaters, there's no way I would have had the same experience streaming it. So while I'll never say the other movies, particularly the Monsterverse, are "trash" the way some people are, they definitely don't compare to Minus One
I agree with you 100 percent and I am glad I saw it in theaters because I thought I would just smile watching him destroy ginza but instead with each foot step I felt genuine feat, and after seeing him charge and fire the atomic breath I was filled with nothing but dread, they did amazing for this movie

While Hollywood Godzilla embodies the spirit of the Showa and Heisei Eras, Toho's Shin and Minus One perfectly captivated the original and true nature of Godzilla being "Gojira": - a peaceful creature that was turned into an abomination by the works of man. - a being that swore to destroy humanity in revenge - a god of death and destruction incarnate.
feel like it works pretty well with the hollywood godzilla cause they adapted what he is. he IS a radioactive lizard still but radiation is in a way a natural force in our world. everything is radiation and or energy, ever shifting and far beyond humanity's true cotnrol. hollow earth stuff fits that cause, well, its the core of the planet where allllllll dat energy comse from, aside from the sun itself. minus one and shin are embodiments of the misuse of that power and the horrific consequences that come from it.
When I saw this in the theater, I thought Holy Crap! This isn't just a "heat"breath. The Big G can actually create what sure looks like an atomic explosion, complete with the fireball and mushroom cloud. Just awesome.
