First, a flip through of my 1989 senior year high school binder, recorded by me with a VHS camcorder in 1989 while I was attending Chimacum High School in Chimacum, Washington.
Then, a more detailed flip through the exact same binder, completely intact, 30 years later in December of 2019 - but this time I decode some of my weird teenage language and art with backstories, photos and video clips from the time!

Very cool
It's no surprise the algorithms put you on my recommendations, and I'm glad they did. I write a lot of fiction that takes place in the 80s (sci-fi short stories and such), and seeing raw footage from your VHS tapes is a great way to get my mind back into that analog mode. As a fellow GenX'er, I appreciate this immensely!

The flooring drawing is an early meme.
Ooh! Never thought of that!!
Ooh, facts
We were lower middle class but my family had a video camera when they first came out for individuals to buy (they were very expensive).
I had a good amount of footage from the mid-late 80s when I was a teen.
I used to record driving around Sacramento in my 69 Camero (had a few illegal street races filmed too), the boxing gym, my pets, family and friends at home. I had so much cool footage.
I had a child in 2001 and a new camera so of course had dozens of tapes of my son as an infant and starting to grow a few years.
I moved from Ca to FL for my job in early 2000s and left boxes and boxes of tapes and photos from the old days in the care of my mom still living in Ca. I came to FL with just a suitcase and anything I owned in the past was in Ca.
When I went back to Ca a few years later after moving to FL I had a home etc and money to ship my old possessions to my new home in Fl and that was my intention.
After returning to CA on Xmas vacation with plans to ship all my old stuff back to Fl I learned my younger sister had place ALL of the photos and videos of the past into an old barn that only had a partial roof.
The family photos from the 50s-2000s had been rained on and sun beating directly on them for years. The boxes were corroded, full of spiders warped and completely ruined from years of exposure to daily sun or rain.
When I saw pile of now destroyed history, I found one semi-intact photo of my soccer team from 1981. That was all I took and walked away from the pile almost in tears.
I'm still very upset about this. My sister was very messed up about the divorce of our parents and our dad never showing interest in her after the divorce. She still is messed up about that at age 48.
I can only speculate that she placed no value on the past due to her trauma so essentially put all the photos and tapes out so they would be destroyed.
Even to this day, any mention of what happened, or the treatment of memories creates a huge amount of animosity amongst my sister and I.
I strongly recommend any younger people that are documenting their young lives with photos and video to keep full responsibility and ownership of your material and entrust it to NOBODY even for a short period of time. Others won't value your memories as you do, to them it's just "old junk".
Big thanks to Len for sharing with us. At least we can enjoy the content that he has managed to save after all these years even if ours has been destroyed or never was.

@@tylersingleton9284 Well, maybe what the sentiments on this notebook indicate could very well be misogyny. However, it would take a discussion with the student find out for sure. And even then, the adults talking with the student need to remember that they are dealing with young people and that their job is to inform and challenge young people for their long-term flourishing, and not to force students to follow any rigid dogmas. I'm sure he was into it. Nevermind was released in 91 just a couple of years later(the year I was born). He was still super young.
He was probably watching MTV so before grunge even hit Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Alice In Chains, and Jane's Addiction were in high rotation on MTV and metal kids were loving it.
@ yup! A lot of people don't realize that Man in the Box was a hit a full year and a half before Smells Like Teen Spirit put Nirvana on the map. Hell, I didn't even know about it until the mid 90s cuz I was a 9 year old listening to pop in '90.
@ in the 80's & 90's MTV was awesome. They had all the hair bands and what seemed like endless videos. I was born in 73.i loved growing up in 80s & 90s. A couple of the VJs I can remember was Carson Daily and Daisy Fuentes... Oh and downtown Julie Brown... Lol... I'd leave the TV on MTV all day...🎶..Videos are just not the same any more. But nothing is.
And Kurt Cobain could have went anywhere he wanted to,he was very talented. Unfortunately he chose the grave instead of tip top... Nirvana was an amazing band. All of my friends that was into rock & metal loved Nirvana. They had a different sound... Courtney Love probably drove him over the edge... 🤔
i love these videos so much and i really think i would’ve loved hanging out with you guys if i was alive back then lol . such an amazing time
We would've had so much fun together!!!
21:00 I remember hearing those ads on the TV or talk radio. I've taught art for several years. One of the best parts is a kid can be a complete screw-up in every other class, but in MY class he can succeed. Instead of having a math quiz or a history paper, a student can create a piece of artwork to be proud of, and know that he can produce something worthwhile.
What an amazing view. My textbooks and notepads were full of band logos, stupid drawings and endless rants... I spent the whole time during classes in my own little world. But now we can browse through our high school books and remember how silly we were :D
For sure! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Dude this is so fuckin' rad to see!
I never got to experience this time, i was born in 98. Having a bro born in 88 I got to see a lot of his old stuff and It's still one of my favorite things to do. Thank you for making these cool videos, I'm so glad you filmed all the cool shit yall did
Thank you for watching!! I love it when younger people find my vids and get to see what it was like!

Cyan Magneta because i should have saved them
colleen ryan you had us in the first not gonna lie
he would have “adhd” if he was in high school to day
Rugger 878 so true
Is that a bad thing??
@@dinosaurkid1758 yeah because clearly he's normal. Nowadays people get diagnosed with bullshit just because.
Rugger 878 huh?
@@x0xTHLover4Lifex0x I wouldn't say everyone always has ADHD when they get diagnosed with it but I for one am glad I was diagnosed with ADHD. I would have sunk like a brick in school if I hadn't gotten the help I needed.
This is such a cool video!! And so good you have all these memories from when you was younger.
Nostalgic. Makes me think about my HS bf and his BFF. They were both like you. I still have my HS binder as well. It's covered in drawings and collages. It was a thing to make a collage and put it in the front and back of your binder. I wish I held on to my prom pics.
Dude. I can't even begin to explain how important these videos are. PLEASE KEEP IT UP. You were born for this. 😬🤘🏼
Thank you to infinity!!!! ❤❤❤❤
This shit makes high school seem like 1000 times cooler and funner than it actually is. What a weird cultural documentation. There should be an anthropology study on 80's pacific north west rocker kids based on your videos.
I would love that! And yeah, high school mostly sucked ass.
Nice video, Len. I really love the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s really, really much. So much, that I wish to live in that decade for the rest of my life. I love your teenage home videos, Len. Keep up the rad work.
Thank u my friend! More like this one coming soon
Please do more videos!! These are great, they bring back such good memories!!
As a 16 year old kid I would've wished growing up in these times, I've always been more into music/movies/shows from the 90s and it would've been cool if I got to live in a time they actually came out. That's just my inner boomer speaking.
You fucking RULE!!! 🤘🤘
SAME! my dad always played michael jackson around me, but around 10 i had an obsession with him which then introduced me to 80s/90s. ever since then my world has changed, im 14 now and my phone is full of 70s-early 2000s tv shows/movies i want to watch/i have watched. i also have some iconic/cool pics of 50s-early 2000s aesthetics, fashion, or famous people. As for my music, well i have 5+ playlists filled with over 300 songs from the 50s-early 2000s lol
@@kennedyskyler1409 Damn!!! Ur in the wrong generation!
Boomers are from the 60's/70's. Why must ppl insist on just skipping Gen X? You are pining for the Gen X glory days, not the Boomer glory days. Ok, in fairness, I guess the 80's were the grey area in between boomers & Gen X.
WhatAWorld even than you have any type of old way of thinking you are boomer, may it be 80s or early 2000s. It’s just a meme everybody likes to say to get the other person bent
I found this channel yesterday, and I'm loving it!!!
Yaaaaaaay so glad u found me!! 😃
This was so brilliant! I've always wanted to see how different teen's lives were back in the day - my generation have missed being teens as they just want to grow up so fast. I feel like you should do an hour long documentary of your teenage years! Youngsters today have to work at making their folders look like this, but you just did what you felt and didn't overthink it like they do now.
Thank you! I'm super pumped you enjoyed this!!! 😊
@@LenEnders it was great, honestly
This reminds me of the Kurt Cobain journals
I was really just thinking this exact thing
I thought that too
