  • With modified exhausts being a very popular modification here in the U.K, doing so or having one exposes a list of complicated rules and regulations that can be very hard to understand!
From pop & bang maps, sports cats, decats all the way to a simlpe loud exhaust system, police officer MPS OWEN MESSENGER helps explain all with some very helpful input from the team at Milltek Sport and a very special guest.
Big thanks to @mgcharoudin for the advice! See you soon!

Low volume cars still have to be type approved (homologated).
Lower volume cars such as a one off custom made car goes through IVA test. This test still has the same noise restrictions as type approval. BUT
You can have a noisier exhaust based on the age of the car. So if your car is running an exhaust that was legal back in the day, it's still legal now. Your not forced to remove what is legal from new.
I have a bike engine car revving to 13,000rpm.. The system has one exhaust can running along the side of the car. IVA approved. Manufacturer supplied silencer. It doesn't need or have an ID tag welded on. That's just how they were made. Government approved. So your video is incorrect Teddy bear.

Lamborghini is owned by Volkswagen Group, so I refuse to believe that Lamborghini are a 'low volume manufacturer'...

    • @davideyres955
      @davideyres955 Před 19 dny +1

They were an invention from rallying where you deliberately sent unburnt fuel into the exhaust to ignite so that the turbo spun up. I believe they also used the spark to ignite the mixture in the exhaust cycle on a gear change. But you never get anything for free. Motor manufacturers put a hell of a lot of work into making cars reliable and a lot of these aftermarket mods actually make cars slower or remove built in safety features which are there for longevity.

About 14 years a go we rebuilt a 3rd gen 1991 chevy camaro, tried to get original steel exhaust couldnt get one even in America, only a thing caled a magna flow available.
We decided it was to loud so we fitted an extra silencer at the front y pipe which brought it to exceptable level, the fuel system was to high on emissions for the UK so webber built a carb for the engine which brought the car well under the UK emissions level.
I asked the mot center about this new law when I took it for its mot in febuary they said it is for modified cars your car is still standard.
The magna flow is just a stainless steel version of the original exhaust as for the webber it runs a lot smoother but it lost a lot of power from the holley but it got the emissions spot on.

I think its great to educate everyone on this topic with this video, but there are a few things that dont make a lot of sense. You have a segment talking about how pop and bang tunes can cause detonation, and how that ruins engines. However, the RS has been tuned to have bop and bangs, as you would definately give it a new tune after fitting a fully different downpipe/cat/exhaust given its a turbo car. Whats the point of saying dont get a pop and bang tune, and then getting one yourself? Also, when mentioning the seat with detonation related engine wear, i dont think you can just say its due to the pop and bang tune, i would argue its most likely the tune as a whole not being suitable to prevent knock, in part due to elevated temperatures. But you can’t look at detonation on an engine and say ahhh yes thats because of a pop and bang tune.

I lived in America for a half a decade and cats where not required in that state, yet some modified cars still had them so that that the exhaust wouldn't sting noses or smell funky. It's something like 3% of all cars had their cats removed, some percentage got stolen and never replaced and everyone else, the 'normies' if the mechanic tells them they need a new cat, they just get it done and keep the car factory.
Almost as if we don't need mandatory cat converters at all because most people will never take them off and those that do are such a small percentage that they're not going to turn cities into eye burning hydrocarbon fog clouds.

Aftermarket exhausts should never be about sound. They should maintain the number of silencers that the OEM used or more if the system is louder than original. All an aftermarket exhaust system needs to do is have straight through low restriction to flow, and have a bore size big enough to support the power level that an engine is making.

The precedent set as a result of this is frankly frightening.
The vast majority of factory exhaust systems fitted to cars of all types and pricepoints do *not* have EC markings on them and this includes the catalysts fitted to them. The vast majority of police officers are not clued up on cars. The DVSA have effectively put the power to prosecute and profiteer off the motorist entirely into their domain and manipulated it in such a way that if you are in breach or in compliance to the precedents they themselves have set is entirely within the purview of themselves or a *very* fallable(and proven biased) human being wearing a uniform and badge.
I understand the purpose of this video is to inform, not endorse but I echo the sentiments of every other commenter here suggesting this is a massive over-reach.
Legal ramifications aside we used to be a nation of engineering prowess and innovation. No shed built company is going to build up the scratch to pass EC approval without first selling units. How in the world is someone supposed to get their foot in the door?! Are we building a monopoly here or are we building cars?!

The guy talking about pop & bang maps is right about them causing engines to deterioate quicker. I had a friend with an older Skyline who had a hard cut limiter and it was same concept with dumping fuel in but eventually all the detonation cracked a valve.
Some of the emissions stuff on older cars, particulary diesels is pretty silly.
Example: You have an older diesel with a cat, but no DPF. Cat is clogged up, and doesn't work any more but passes the MOT as the only test is to ensure it's visually present, since it doesn't impact the diesels emissions test in any way. Same with EGR

Interesting fact - "pops and bangs" actually came from the rally world and what is was was a device that reduced the amount of lag on turbo charged car by allowing small amounts of fuel to be burnt off throttle so there was extra exhaust gas to keep the turbo spinning longer and therefore reduce the spool up time. Rally cars had to be able to turn it off when not on a stage. Of course the boy racer brigade started copying on their 1.2 corsas and the rest is history
