- The team has arrived in Queenstown and following dinner we ducked into a Super Liquors to find a very limited selection of New Zealand lager. This tasting, overlooking Lake Wakitipo, is what resulted.
This is the first of many tastings on this trip that will produce a documentary of our travels and many video offshoots along the way - Get subscribed!

We know New Zealand has much more to offer than this small selection of bigger market lagers. We are just getting started - stay tuned, and get subscribed!
Having thought more about it, the Emerson's had the best character hiding in there but the can was just too affected by environment. I'd love to give that one a go on draft or closer to the packaging date.
The brewery is about 2 hours up the road if you want to go straight to the source
unfortunately had to get out of town and up to Nelson@@jamesmorgan4460
Oh man, with the exception of the Emersons, you couldn't have picked a worse selection of beers to represent NZ. Steinlager and Speights are macros that haven't changed since the 80's. Macs was a credible brewery back some time ago but were brought out and by one of the big macros and their beers now sit at a price point somewhere between macro and craft beer. Emersons is a lovely beer and it's a real shame that it was in such bad condition. The brewery was also bought out by a macro but it seems to still be a little closer to it's original form. Richard Emerson is the man credited with inventing the NZ pilsner style some thirty years ago. Not that I've been but I would love to get to their brewery in Dunedin.
It's a shame you didn't get to try the Emerson's Pilsner back before they were bought by Lion in 2012. They were one of the pioneers of NZ craft beer, and the Organic Pilsner was a fantastic beer which is considered to be the first real example of the modern NZ Pilsner style. Back then all of Emerson's beers were bottle conditioned and small batch, so they tended to be very fresh and a bit harder to come by outside of Dunedin.
Looking forward to seeing you try beers from some of the fantastic breweries down here - Garage Project, Behemoth, Sawmill, 8 Wired, Isthmus (if you can get it), Bach Brewing, Epic, McLeod's, Liberty, the list goes on!
As a kiwi craft beer drinker, I know these beers well ,Steinlarger & Speights are mass produced beers & although nice aren't a true reflection of NZ craft beers Macs & Emersons are also not really a true reflection of NZ Craft beers & are produced buy large breweries trying to compete with the craft breweries. We have far better craft breweries like Gararge Project ,Sawmill & Behemoth just to name a few which if you had of tried I'm sure you would have been far more impressed. Awesome that you took the time to review these beers I could tell which beers you were describing just by your descriptions of sulphur /SKUNK lack of hops etc.So you were very accurate there. I Wish we could get some Tree House Beers in NZ any chance if this happening?
Love then comparison videos, but really looking forward to the hop selection videos! Enjoy your trip!!
Looking forward to what this adventure produces. Brew on!
You should do a collab with Mountain Culture and Garage Project! oh that would be one heck of a drop!
You got Speights right 👍, I think it's good you tried these, as a kiwi it's interesting to hear what you think of them as they are what many kiwis drink. Enjoy the trip, hope you get to Nelson for the fresh hop festival 🍻
thanks! it seems that sometimes these videos are misunderstood. certainly we have been and will enjoy the full spectrum of the nz beer scene, but the only way forward is to welcome everyone into the fold.
Miss you all! Enjoy, enjoy , enjoy!!!! 💕
Mac’s Gold is one of my all time favorite beers to have at a pub when I visit NZ!
Welcome back team, hoping you have a great time and come back to sunny Nelson again. Just harvested a few kilos of gorgeous hops from my brothers backyard and the fresh hop beers are just starting to hit the breweries here
We are heading that way at the end of next week! Can’t wait to see all your videos!
Enjoy the wonderful & majestic land Tree House crew! I can't wait to eventually join the crew if there's any possible chance 🫶 Take care & safe travels back home. 😎✌️
You have to try Garage Project brewing, best brewery in AU/NZ
I spent a lot of my school holidays in QT. when I grew up I tried Speights and it was spits --- out, What crap. I then travelled to England and holland to find out what a real larger tasted like (Amstel).
Visit Arrowtown it's fab when the popplers change colour. Have a great trip, looking for the next post.
Steinlager was one of my fav like Sapporo or a good Bitburger, Stella fresh in Belgium, etc. Steinlager seems to be good even with the much longer travel time from NZ
That was interesting! ❤
Glad you think so!
NZ and QT a three weeks ago. This will be a hoot!
I imagined Nelson ipas in every NZ pub but I guess that isn’t the case
I just got home from my first New Zealand trip that included 5 days in Queenstown. I enjoyed way too many good beers at Beech Tree. They had a 100% Nelson Sauvin Hazy IPA that was a standout. I looked hard for New Zealand Pils examples and my favorite was Space Monkey by Rhyme X Reason Brewery drank at Cork in Wanaka. Their site lists Gladfield Pilsner Malt with Nectaron hops. I also picked up 750g of hops from League of Brewers in Nelson that I hope to recreate some of my favorites. 5% Hazy Pale Ales are much more common than in the US.
Would be great to see you try some beers from the independent Aus and NZ craft brewers like Garage Project and Mountain Culture to see how it compares to what’s on offer in the States.
It’s been 10 years since I’ve been there but I do remember Moa was really good.
As a brewer here in NZ, I hope you aren't too dissuaded by some of those choices haha
Oh couldn't have picked any worse beers. Go for Epic, there was a Epic Hop Zombie in that fridge you got the beers from. Others to try are Garage Project, Panhead & Behemoth. Great to see you in NZ and in my homeland. Enjoy your trip.
I've been curious about big name beer from NZ. Not sure it's on my bucket list to visit but the hops from there have gained my interest in the last year or so of beers being made in the craft beer industry. That said, sadly it's harder to find imports to try from so many different parts of the world in the US in major retailers now.
👋🏻👋🏻 hi kids ❤️❤️
Welcome to NZ, heading to Queenstown myself in a couple of days. Your selection is not really representative of modern craft beer in NZ, but still good to try I guess. Enjoy NZ.
Please tell me you tried something good. Like Liberty Knife Party or Citra. Or that Epic Hop Zombie I saw in the fridge.
Emerson's pils about 10 years ago was awesome. Then Lion got it.
Know a lot of people are saying Garage Project but Liberty does some exceptional beers. Still would take 8 Wired over Garage Project.
Emersons pilsner back in the day was the beer that created the actual style nz pils you should look into the original owners story its pretty cool blokes fully deaf his story on his brewing journey was amazing listen
interesting- will dig deeper!
Interesting, a few cheap and nasties in there. Not the selection I would give someone wanting to sample an array of NZ beers. You should go to Dunedin and to the Emersons brewery. Its easily the best of the large breweries in the country. Also while you are there go check out Noisy Brewery, a really great craft brewery.
Are you heading up to Motueka we are just wrapping up the hop harvest
Been here for almost a week now
wow....Setting like that with some cold cold brews, doesn't get much better.....
A part of me died a little when you chose Speights and Steinlager, they're the nasty rubbish that gave us headaches when we were young
Should give Cassel’s a try , their milk stout is quite nice
i did! Future video!
@@treehousebrewco awesome can’t wait! , Cassel’s has got some nice beer on offer
Whenever I hear this type of feedback about a lot of store-bought beers you've been reviewing, I can't help but imagine that they are sitting for soooo long before being purhcased & consumed. 😬😅
I think the staff at the Super Liquor were winding you up with calling Speights "Spits"... although, to be fair, most people would definitely spit when drinking it. And even the brewer can only give it 3 stars.
新西兰当地特色的新西兰皮尔森和新西兰浑浊淡色艾尔是非常好喝的,跟美国的同类型啤酒差别还是很明显的。New Zealand's local specialties, New Zealand Pilsner and New Zealand hazy Pale Ale, are very drinkable, and the difference from their American counterparts is still noticeable.
Hi Nate from Tewksbury, MA USA.
Evening Paul
No haircut to start this trip?
Down there buying up all of the good galaxy.
That's Australian
The very first person I've ever seen drinking beer like Wine. 🤣 have a mouth full mate to really get the full taste and aroma of the beer.
Don't drink beer like a lady with a skirt on sipping on them grape juice. 😂
L DOG
What a shame theyre the beers you chose! There are so many better breweries out there
there is context in the video
Why smell beer? Same response every time!
??? Aroma is a big part of brewing
Aroma is part of taste, you can't help but smell what you are eating and drinking. Why do you think so many people are unable to eat durian fruit?
why have a nose at all, I completely agree
