That NY Cosmos squad made a lifelong football fan out of a six year old boy from Omaha, Nebraska. Today, that boy is a 53 year old man, tapping away on a CZcams comment board.
Even in the autumn of their careers, those men remained living legends of the game. I once read that the aggregate transfer value of the Cosmos, adjusted for inflation and the present market value of players of that stature, would be well over a billion dollars.
In other words, they would be the second most expensive club in the world, trailing only Manchester City.
Danke vielmas, Herr Beckenbauer. Ich werde niemals vergessen.

Italy wasn't even good enough to compete with his team in 1966 and 1974. Nor at the 1972 Euro. So that comment is quite laughable already. In 1970 Italy won 4-3 after extra time with Beckenbauer having his arm in a sling. But Germany beat England 3-2 after extra time in the quarterfinal whereas Italy beat Mexico 4-1 or 4-0. Italy was well rested and broke apart at the end of the game vs Brazil bc that semi vs Germany had worn them down.

It's almost the same with english fans crying after Lampards dissalowed goal even tho the match ended 4:1 to Germany and Germany was the better team troughout the game even tho in that period and a crossbar hit shortly after, England was slightly on top.

I'm not disrespecting Beckenbauer when I type this, but Germany was given the world cup in 1990, as if it were a Christmas gift. Andreas Brehme dived to the ground looking for that penalty call. Gabriel Calderón gets tripped and the ref doesn't consider that a foul? If Caniggia did not get that yellow card versus Italy we would've been back to back champs. Then again, FIFA could not afford the Sky blue & white to win because Italians would have rioted no doubt. It is all good though we got that long awaited 3rd cup on December 18, 2022.
