      Personally, I can't really view Mystery of Aaravos as a continuation of The Dragon Prince. This season brought back the sense of adventure of the old seasons, but I still have low expectations from it. The Dragon Prince used to be about mature topics like cultural differences and loss, whereas now, it's mostly about stopping a bad guy from being released. Aaravos is a looming threat, but during the journey, the stakes are actually much smaller. I also don't feel attached to the characters. Callum and Rayla's conflict isn't being adressed and Ezran is just there.

    I feel like I’ve been saying this since the show came out, but tdp should've been 3 seasons long, 22-24 episodes each. This would give them time to develop all the characters and relationships without it feeling rushed, and the filler scenes/episodes wouldn’t be as noticeable. But it’s Nefflix and they’re weird, so we’re stuck with this…

    • @Casey____
      @Casey____ Před 11 měsíci +3

      The issue with that is that Wonderstorm is an independent company so they might not have enough money for that many episodes a season

    • @moonberries1397
      @moonberries1397 Před 11 měsíci +4

      Yah that would be better, but I don't think it's the creators fault more of a budgeting and a Netflix being Netflix issue
      So with that in mind I personally still enjoy what we've got for the Dragon Prince because I genuinely think it's a good show and I love it. (except I don't enjoy season 4 that much that season wasnt that great)

      That or double the run time per episode. As far as streaming goes it's time to let go of the traditional 30 minute or 1 hour TV format since most streaming is commercial free.

      @@sluggishhollow2030 The baby glow toads were annoying but the gang didn't waste that much time. If you listen you'll hear that Nyx told Finnegrin that they were looking for a secret treasure in the Sea of the Castout which caused him to sail there using Sea Legs, the fastest "ship" in Scumport which then managed to get them to Aaravos' prison before Claudia.

    "We have learned virtually nothing about the mystery of Aaravos"
    Maybe the main cast will find out that Aaravos was imprisoned for something that's not a major deal,like maybe he just has unpopular opinions and the dragons didn't like that

    Great review!
    While this season had its issues, I think I would rank it second after my first watch (but it's very close between seasons 2 and 5).
    One thing I'm really hoping for moving forward is using Bait as a crutch. Binging all the seasons, you realise how often they've either forgotten Bait or need to save him for seem reason. It's become overused at this point. I also really hope that the baitlings aren't permanent.
    After Avatar and Korra I went into this show with really high expectations but five seasons in, I'm realising that I need to temper those expectations if I'm going to enjoy the rest of the show for what it is. I think the team was maybe a little too ambitious and the requirements of a "kids show" might be hurting them a little.

  • @kalzium8857
    @kalzium8857 Před 11 měsíci +17

    I appreciate that the creators of the dragon prince have high ambitions. They have comics, a table top game and so on. But I feel like they have the wrong writing strategy for season 4 to 7.
    It seems like they brainstorm some keywords and then they are trying to put the season together.
    For Earth:
    Forests, mountain, caves, Terry, Earthblood elves, gems, buried under rocks and so on.
    And ocean is it even more so
    Ocean, Pirates, River, drowning, boat, claudia fights an ocean dragon
    It seems that one may awkwardly fit these key words together, but the story is more about themes and parallels than the characters.
    I think more episodes would improve season 3. But season 4 and 5 didn't use the nine episodes. I also think that season 4 was not a good set up for season 5. Why?
    The sunfire elves plot was filler except for exiling Karim.
    The heroes could have stayed in Katolis and Rayla could have gotten the coins to a later date.
    The villains had some success. But sir sparklepuff could have known the location of the prison instead of the earth arch dragon.
    The writers could have written season 4 and 5 into one season.
    For season 6, i expect it to be better. I don't think the writers want to introduce us to space travel, because season is called star.

    • @TheMrPeteChannel
      @TheMrPeteChannel Před 7 dny

      They will eventually go up something called a "Starscraper". Your getting space themes & voids this season.

    I really don't get why they chose to make the Mystery of Aaravos a 4 season arc. It is clear they dont have nearly enough story to pad out 4 seasons and so the pace just feels like it's crawling along. Seasons 4 and 5 literally felt like half a season worth of content combined in terms of progression of the main plot! The end battle really felt like a mid-season kind of conflict in how it was handled, not fit for a true season finale.
    Also, at this point Viren knows and has refused the solution to prolonging his life. At this point the only thing that could save him is a deus ex machina, which wouldbe terrible narratively. (I suppose it's possible he tells Claudia, what would have to happen and she goes against his wishes to murder the hybrid creature to save him). So I kind of do hope they just let Viren expire, rather than pull some new solution out of thin air.

    • @TheMrPeteChannel
      @TheMrPeteChannel Před 7 dny

      The creators have said the Soren & Viren will meet again so Viren is not dying in the first Episode of 6.

  • @k1988smith

    Soren would be a much better character if his humor was better - his humor made me roll my eyes from jump! I liked this season and it has some very dark moments, but it all fit for me. One of my complaints was that the previous four seasons didn't balance the humor and serious moment well, sometimes it felt very made for kids, but not in a good way - then it gets so grave. I can't take a repeat of Voltron so I hope it ends well!

    It's a bit better than season 4. It still needs improvement, including the animation
    It needs more than 9 episodes each season
    (Also, I think Viren was done better here than the previous season)

    Great video! I definitely agree with you on a lot of your points, and I know that we used the same software because I recognize that text effect at the very beginning, which I think is pretty awesome! Filmora twinsies!
    Anyway, on the content of the video, I think I see where you're coming from with a lot of this stuff, especially the limited animation and the interesting decisions on the characterization of a lot of the characters. I, too, am concerned about it, but I think that ultimately, once we have the complete saga, that is to say, once we have the two remaining seasons, I think the entirety of this arc is going to play a lot better. Although, I think the show would seriously benefit from just getting a few more episodes of the season, so we can explore some more of the characters and more of the world in a way that is not directly significant to the plot.

  • @phtearmug
    @phtearmug Před 10 měsíci +2

    Love your review! Really succinct but encapsulates some issues which I share concerns for. It would be really great if they had more episodes to flesh out characters and events, but at this point I don't think it's going to happen. Seasons 6 and 7 are already in production and I think the 9 episodes per season were already fixed with Netflix approving the saga, unfortunately. I'm really sad shows like these can't reach their full potential because of monetary concerns.

    Aaravos become empty since Viren fall... Before our little bug pal was more real, he had plans and everyone could see elv's lead. But now all Aaravos does is, well, nothing mostly. We saw his face a couple of times, but that and his actions feels more like fanservis. I wanted hot star candy but received only a cover. It's even lost some of prettiness, the old design was better :(

    I agree that the very short seasons are bad for the show's overall plot. totally agree. but I don't think that's just the show's fault . It's Netflix too. There have been times when Netflix has chopped a season of animated show into two seasons just because. like VLD had one season that was like 13 episodes and then one that was just 9 episodes etc.

    • @jimmyliuwho
      @jimmyliuwho  Před 10 měsíci

      No I def agree it’s a Netflix issue. It’s annoying bc I trust the vision of the creators, but it can’t reach its potential due to this issue. Reminds me of how Korra got screwed over similarly

    It's hard to believe there are only 2 seasons left. I actually don't mind the slow pace of the show (not talking about the release schedule), but it feels like they are using their time wrong. We still don't actually know where Aaravos is, or what his goals after being released are. I think this season is executed much better than S4, but it's place in the overall plot is worrying.

    The Dragon Prince is a really weird show... storywise it has massiv priority and pacing issues. So many scenes are totally ireelevant to the main-plot, scenes are dragged out too long, some are way too short. Season-4 had like 3 episodes of acutal plot, the rest was filler. The character and story priority is all over the place. I think one of the absolut supidest things about season 5 is, that they show the bad guys so much... have these writers ever heard of building up to something, creating suspense... "what are the bad guys up to, how close are they to the heros... or have they already been there and the heros were to slow?"... nope non of that. They tuned in with the bad guys on the boat every episode, like its a bad soap "what are our baddies up to this time? find out now!". Season 4 and 5 could have been one season, they just had to cut all the stuff with the elves and much of the redundancy with the bad guys in season 5 😮‍💨
    I really like the the first 3 seasons, but man... seasson 4 & 5 feel like they actively kill my braincells. I know it supposed to be a kids-show... but even my kinds were bored every second episode. The story often feels so totally random, as if the writers blindfolded themselfs and threw darts on a storyboard on what to do next 🙄

    • @TheMrPeteChannel
      @TheMrPeteChannel Před 7 dny +1

      The dartboard had things like "add a vampire" & "add an evil pirate". At least it didn't land on " add a new love interest for Viren ".
