I wouldn't call it subtle. The thing that makes him instill fear is the act of being a complete psychopathic sadist. Doing horrible things is just what's needed to make it in this world, so it is expected that everyone does it but actually seeing someone who enjoys doing it even though it's an act is absolutely terrifying.

I love that Negan is visibly uncomfortable doing that again. It just shows that it was always a front he put on to maintain control. Once the show is over and he can let the front down around those he trusts, he looks disgusted and angry with himself
This scene gave me chills. But oddly in a good way? Negan was acting just like when he led the Saviors during the war and being his usual intimidating self, but it felt weirdly good he was doing it to bad people instead of someone who didn't deserve it.
They kinda did deserve it tho. We only see him as the villain bc he was introduced as one. Think about it from his POV his people wanted answers and revenge for the deaths of their loved ones that Rick and his group killed. They didn’t need to kill those people and by doing that they got on Negans radar. They did it to themselves icl. The brutality wasn’t necessary. But an eye for eye ig. Ntm they wiped out an entire outpost and negan only killed 2 of their people, so in reality he actually went easy on them.

She broke eye contact as a way to show that she was scared to see it given their past. Then she showed that she might be able to look past it by reverting back to looking into his eyes Negan understood her respectful guesture with her body language and showed her that he wasn't proud of it by looking down as if he didn't want to do it. Maggie shows the shock on her face that he is still shameful of himself because he doesn't like to kill anyone. Negan: "We gotta go"
It's the part when he says knock knock for the third time and then replies to himself who's there? In that higher pitched voice while rolling his eyes and looking up. That's so funny and gets me every time. Jeffrey must have relished doing that scene.
Finally, one of the spinoffs that is fresh like The Walking Dead was in its first seasons. I'm really enjoying this fresh, new story, and finding it exciting.
