I've appreciated the openness and honesty from Jeff Frane at Wilde - especially regarding Wilde's design, thoughts on overseas production, and overall ethos of the company. Easy to support that kind of transparency. (if you don't know what I'm referring to, you'll find some PLP interviews with him)
Surly Bridge Club has been one that has taken me by the most surprise in 2023. It’s an ultimate ATB. I even put on a Surly Corner Bar on it and it’s a weird but wonderful rig! Give it a go you won’t regret it
Now you are 8n Spain have you wondered about setting up a side business as cycle holiday or cycle events for party pace people?
I have a Hudski, and it fills a role for me of being a modern 90s mountain bike, and I quite enjoy just using it to ride around town and grab groceries. It's light for what it is, and still moves at a decent speed, and handles hills around where I live with no issues. It does look like it'd make a pretty decent bikepacking bike if that's something you're into.
I do all that too with my Doggler, along with light trail riding, bikepacking and road touring. Versatility in spades.
already have "big meats" and "drunken goat" in the first 2 mins. get those bingo cards ready!
After riding around on 2.6's, I fitted a 29 x 3" Chronicle in the Supertramp's fork. And there's still ample clearance.
It may not be for everyone but I'm loving the ride even more with the lower pressure and increased suspension.
Have any photos? I have a super tramp myself and was wondering if it could go 3”
The Wilde, with that lovely top tube, gets my vote.
Both are interesting bikes. But with new bike costs I'm looking for a used cyclocross and hybrid for an all rounder.
Your videos are still my favorite.
Would like to see more coverage of secondhand bikes due to the environmental and financial cost of new bikes
There are lots of used bikes out there, CL & garage sales are my favorite sources. Happy searching !
I have a V1 Doggler with a high bottom bracket, and I enjoy that specific feature very much on the trails. It's so versatile and fun on and off road. They should've raised the stack instead of lowering the BB.
The Wilde Supertramp is such a nice bike though, like a burlier (tire clearance, bombproof fork), more refined relative of the Doggler. A dream bike that one could ride for decades.
That fork on the Wilde reminds me of the old Syncros fork you would find stock on high end Rocky Mountain MTBs back in the day. It's a bike I'd love to have in the garage.
I love the doggler- it’s essentially a hybrid with really nice components and looks fun in a lot of situations. Would make for a nice commuter.
If you want something similar but are in a budget you can get a diamondback division 2 or a dew plus
Man that Wild looks gorgeous and oh so fun. No current need though. But just beautiful.
Nice bikes, Giant used to have a roadified MTB called the Seek best bike I've ever had stolen. 😑
I'm looking forward to the bikes of 2024. Good general use machines.
Really love your approach to bikes. I'd personally be very interested in a recommendation of some of those "boring" gravel bikes, as I'm in the market for my first one.
After my last vintage road bike broke I had to move to an old mountain bike and found out that I just prefer drop bar bikes.
I totally agree with your opinion that most gravel bikes are geared wrong. Would love to hear if you find anything interesting, especially in Europe.
i have a specialized awol converted with an FSA metropolis and a sram eagle 12 speed. it is a truly do it all bike.
I ride a Marin DSX FS (front suspension) despite the 60mm travel (rough roads and uneven terrain pacifier) I consider it an ATB. 45 mm tire width room for 2.0s not "fat meats" this flat bar gravel bike is so much more. At its heart it is an aggressive hybrid. More versatile than most. You should swing a leg over one. Be interested to have your take on it.
❤
I love the supertramp, it's a bit out of budget for me right now but will keep an eye out for a used one! That and the doggler are super nice modern ATB's. I just really wish the doggler didn't come with a carbon fork, if it was all steel I'd be all over it. I just don't trust any part of my bike to be carbon especially not for loading it up a lot for bikepacking.
I own a Doggler and the carbon fork feels like the week point indeed, loaded and unloaded. Although combined with the alu frame it makes for a light bike which I enjoy, compared to full steel bikes.
I wonder why we don't see more aluminium forks. It seems like a good compromise between weight/sturdiness/price. The only 2 bikes with alu fork that I can think of in this category are the Brodie Mega Tour and the new Moose Gravel Express 1
How to test those those type of indie bikes ?
Good Videos - Maybe - It will be interesting to see if the European bikes have some differences from the predominately North American bikes that have been shown. How do the craftsmen of Europe build their bikes?
I can recommend Fairlight Cycles, I myself ride the lovely Secan gravelbike, atb
Europeans mostly use cheap Asian labor as well. ✌️
The Marin Muirwoods has same slack headtube as the Doggler, on paper pretty similar geometry.
I’ve got one to re review. We’ll see :)
Awesome! Looking forward to the review!
Russ how come you never tried the crust romanceur on the channel?
Now that you guys live in the EU, I hope some more european brands get on your radar, like Fairlight Cycles, they're awesome!
They’re UK I think and out of the EU. Yay Brexit. So shipping is a bit of a nightmare.
finna is a barcelona brand, nordest from portugal has interesting frames, to name a few, cinelli also has some good stuff. Also my favorite brand from Berlin, 8bar. 8bar makes an amazing steel bikepacking frame, tflsberg.
Hudski as a daily driver and Wilde as the weekend warrior bikepacker?
Honestly both would do well. Just depends on budget and material preferences.
The industry keeps changing the name for bikes and trying to categorize them. Then when something is successful everyone tries to copy. Then a segment of the industry rails against the current trends and tries something different. The industry tries to categorize the new trend and the cycle starts again. There are three types of bikes road, mountain, and hybrid, why do we need more “categories” than that? Russ is doing a great job with reviews of hybrid bikes no matter what they are called. If you’re not racing or descending technical terrain a hybrid is the right bike. It is probably over simplification and we all play a part in it as consumers! Keep doing your thing Russ!
Lol exactly my thoughts- why can’t they just be honest and just market them as modern hybrids instead of making these unnecessary categories
I want a Hudski Doggler
Snag one while they’re on sale. $1280 for the Deore model. Loving mine!
Gravel bikes are the best, don't care if brands release racing gravel bikes, I have a TI bike and will not purchase another gravel bike
