I've got a few 1994 Dawes Kickback comp (a reproduction of my childhood bike) a 1995 Marin indian fire trail (a reproduction of my Dads bike) a 1995 specialized S works team FSR (a reproduction of JMCs bike) and a 1996 Specialized stumpjumper (I found this for my sister in law then decided it was a bloody nice bike so bought it for myself)
Hey - the data is saying that traditional bike theft is on the decline because thieves are almost exclusively targeting e-bikes… so I’m happy my “primitive” bike is sexy to thieves.
thanks you for sharing, just wondering if the diacompe wing shifter can be fitted with 11s 10t-50t garbaruks cassette?
Yes
c'mon Russ the "traditional" way of having the thumbie is not WRONG its just an alternative. It works fine and there is absoultely nothing wrong about it. The other way is fine, nothing wrong its just an alternative.
You must know that I don’t think it’s wrong. It’s a thumbnail. I’m trying to make more than minimum wage here.
I’m old- 65- and was a teenager in the mid-70’s when Americans first began biking as adults. We had our “ten speeds,” and with maybe one exception they were actually very, very good. Even an all steel $99 Schwinn Varsity was a pretty fast fun bike to ride. I had one of the first Trek road bikes, handmade in Waterloo, Wisconsin. I rode that one for decades. So, I kinda just shake my head at all the bike industry changes. As far as I’m concerned the only major improvement in bikes since the mid-70’s is indexed shifting. Now that’s a biggie. But other than that, if I could have my 1975 Trek back with indexed shifting, I’d take it over the stuff they’re selling these days.
On 2x you should avoid bottom pull derailleurs at all costs, they will always get water inside the cables
The clamp on version's clamp has been revised and improved. Seems they heard you. How's it feel to be so influential?
There's new proprietary parts coming out I still hope to find derierraliers , cables , tires, bearings and tubes for my older bikes from the 2000s era .
The problem Hertz had with renting Teslas is a little more nuanced. Renters were driving them extremely aggressively. Their Teslas were getting damaged or totalled at an alarming rate. Hertz originally bought them thinking they could get a share of the Uber drivers who rent EVs for work. But the joyriders were trashing the cars.
Bikes a just the right speed and right size for the city. Like your paintings.
What you need for fun is a rigid hardtail carbon forked mountain bike with less aggressive tires.
It looks pretty ugly. ;)
I’m a fan of paella, and the variety of ingredients you can throw in the pan. However, if the rice isn’t cooked well, it can easily take a lot away from the meal.
You lost me at Portland and amazing… It looks more like a beta male convention with a bunch of hipster cuckolds, it should be the rimmed glasses convention..
I have finally gotten my hands on the 2x to do a long-awaited refresh on my old Soma canti brake frame. In short, i love it, but i had to order the crankset from Germany. Install was easy and straightforward, shifts good, brakes good, feels good. Can't wait to go for some long rides.
I really cannot understand dropper posts being overrated. Absolutely essential bit of kit (for an mtb).
Yes, I’m officially in the hater camp, lol 😂
I've run this on 3 setups (friction, road and trigger shifters, 2-1 ratio), and did not find it to be reliable with friction (cable snaps at the cable router wheel), or 12-speed 50t casettes (clutch bumps into the teeth, can't reach top cog). Recommend keeping it indexed.
Interesting!
I actually ride mostly in my hiking clothes, most shirt are UV protected, think, breathable and long arm. Same with pants/shorts, I use the ones where u can convert the pants into shorts. Fast drying and breathable
In my opinion, the most overrated thing is thinking you need a new bike. If your bike is 2018 and up geometry has pretty much hit a plateau. Just maintain your ride enjoy it and actually focus on riding versus worrying about having the best components or newest bike.
Gusti Leather saddle. Retrospec 6 button track. $11
I keep a gun on my bike ride for bears and people
Go for a smaller size, mount riser bar
Do you think road performance could be on par with say the marin dsx 1 with some inner bar ends and lower rolling resistance tires?
"Just trying to be cheap...". As someone who runs Campy, I totally understand 👍
Per the yuge
the guy @3.30 nailed it for me
I bought very cheap bartape.. didn't come with an adhesive backing (yeah, THAT cheap). Ideal. Just wrap it and fix the ends with electrical tape. I don't even wrapped the whole bar, just the parts I use when riding. Is it pretty.. NO, not really Do I care: Equally NO, not really ;-)
I think there's always going to be a niche for nerds like us who prefer practical bikes without all the smoke and mirrors of electronic shifting and batteries....I'm not too worried moving forward as there should be enough of us to make it worthwhile to make cables and housing.
Supremely awesome sesh !! I'm exprrimenting w/ boycotting car ownership atm because it's such a racket for shareholders !! From fuel to repairs its a rediculous scheme to funnel short term profits into shareholders pockets (and many fall for it thinking there are no other choices )!! Trying to use both bikes and PEVs to avoid these greedy schemes = not easy BUT the movement is growing !
Can you still run mudgurds that use the same frame attachment point as the rack ?
You can buy a second hook from ortlieb.
Keep it simple
Right on you found the key i have ridden all my life
So much people saying so stupid things. The guy hating new things just to hate new things. How can you say that a square shaped BB axle is better. It is heavier, more exposed, needs more tools and most of the times you are just watching not to strip the socket when you wanna change it and you are jumping with your buddy on a 1,5m pipe to get this sucker loose. BSA bb is the way to go, cheap, sturdy, easy to maintain and service. You just loosen the 2 screws and tap that baby out. Internal routing, press fit and tubeless is the most bizarre thing right now imo.
It’s an awesome bag with lots of organization, feels premium and perfect in many ways for some… For me it’s heavy and small.
Didn’t watch live, haven’t read the comments, and sorta agree generally, but as someone who started when a 6 spd freewheel was high tech, I can say that people like us have been singing this song for a long time, and I’m sure long before then. Perhaps we’re increasingly niche, but Riv is still around, and you can still buy basic parts of decent quality. It doesn’t get advertised, but it’s still in the catalog. All I’m saying is there’s no need to be OVERLY negative… focus on finding the good stuff and get the word out.
Unfortunately most products are being made in conjunction with one another, meaning that this derailleur is made to work best with a regular dual action lever. Anything else would be seen as a ‘compromise’ And on an sti lever you’ve got a large paddle to push on so it probably doesn’t require much effort when used with that.
I am going to try this with a 11 to 48 cassette using the 6020 derailleur and a cues 2x crank set The old front derailleur click shift seems to work with the cues crank I just have the 6000 rear derailleur at the moment and it doesn’t shift very well but it’s meant to be for 1x only lol 😂
Keep on keeping on. Your honesty is why I watch. 😊
Insight into bike manufacturing is very interesting. Loved this,
Do it old school, clean your chain and cogs quick. Pine-sol or Pine-O-Pine. Natural degreaser and cheap. Everyone I knew competitively racing for five years did the same cleaning. Do this outdoors. Mix the cleaner @ 4:1 water to cleaner. Apply with a nylon brush like a chain brush, while rotating your crank/wheel/cogs. You’ll see a lot of dirty liquid coming off your chain and cog. Shortly sparkling clean. Spray with water, while rotating. Allow to air dry. Lube. I’m all for protecting my gears. Chains are cheap. Time is the thing we wanted to save, and be willing to clean frequently. We did, because this is cheap. Use the lube of your choice. Many of us used Pedro’s.
Going with ratio tech modification on sram 1x11 on my cx/gravel/all road bike to get modern parts and and get more range from 36t cog currently to 52t max cog. Still cable pull shifter - mechanical disc for ease of use and repair.
Not satisfied with the low gears on my 1×.
The Ruina looks like a sketch version of the Mini CIC, the most popular steel bike in Chile in the 70s
Unfortunately the bike industry has another plan for this guy and consumers. Marketing is winning out by pushing carbon. I just found out that the company in China that produced lugs, fork crowns, and other cast products for bike frames has been taken over by Tange. This has put parts in such short supply that steel frame builders all over the World are closing shop. All that will be left are those that do Tig welding. In my opinion carbon is junk and there is no value in it. I have been in contract to have a custom steel frame builder since Feb. and now the build is on hold indefinitely until he can find the parts to finish it. What a World we live in.
LOVE the Cave of Bad Ideas!
I'm surprised Chinese electronic groupsets aren't talked about more often. Currently LTwoo and Wheeltop allow the option of 7 to 13 speed cassettes and your choice of crankset, chainring and chain. Ltwoo uses off-the-shelf rechargeable batteries and offer both 1x and 2x groupsets. Wheeltop uses a fixed battery but offers a mechanical brake cable version if you prefer rim or cable actuated disc brakes. Wheeltop also has a gravel groupset coming as well. Much of this stuff is still 1st gen and rough around the edges, but non-proprietary bike tech does exist for those willing to try something different.
