  • Finally, wrapping up the alternate starter series is the Best Team for Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver: Meganium Edition. The Gen 4 Johto games are definitely hard to make Best Teams for so I decided to take a different approach this time around to give new and more interesting Pokemon the spotlight this time around.

    Meganium is actually the best johto starter to face clair's kingdra. it tanks its hydro pump and even dragon pulse like a boss, and an overgrow boosted petal dance hits like a truck. I had one in my last playthrough with petal dance, earthquake, iron tail and giga drain and honestly? it didnt fall from any other of my members (donphan, magmar, lanturn, pidgeot and nidoking). plus it has an amazing design

    • @ShirtFan
      @ShirtFan Před měsícem

      As someone who just replayed HG and picked Meganium, there are only 3 gyms in Johto I wouldn't really use the Meganium line in - those being Falkner, Bugsy, and Morty. Sure there are some individual pokemon and battles in most gyms I would keep Meganium out of, Meganium really comes into it's own in the second half of the Johto region. All I really did team wise was slap in a geodude before the first gym and add a Magneton before Morty (I also used a Ratticate against Morty's Gengar LOL), and that was really all I needed to get 8 badges. I even beat the Elite Four using only Meganium, Graveller, Magneton, and Ho-oh. Meganium is not as bad in HGSS as people may assume.

  • @ponyboy9765
    @ponyboy9765 Před 3 lety +8

    Your Meganium is bad because you’re using it wrong. You’re trying to use it as an offensive attacker and it’s a defensive stall/wall.
    Body slam - good power and chance for paralysis
    Toxic - wear down your opponent with increasing damage
    Synthesis - heal up and continue to let toxic wreak havoc
    Petal dance - your strong stab move.
    If you wanted to go even more defensive you can swap body slam for reflect/light screen and swap petal dance for giga drain for even more recovery. Meganiums job is not to hit hard it’s to wear down and wall big threats so your other team members can come in and sweep.

    When you said Meganium was going to be the “supporting cast” I thought you were going to bring up its support moves, like Poison Powder, Reflect, and Light Screen. But these best teams are mainly about who can do good super effective damage to major bosses. Speaking of, I hadn’t thought of using Girafarig to cheese Morty before. Gotta remember that one! If you choose Chikorita, it’s probably a good idea to trade for an Onix to make early game fights with flying and bug types much easier. Best teams vids don’t include trade evolutions buuut you could evolve that Onix into Steelix and use it through the whole game if you wanted. Metal Coats are held by wild Magnemite or bought from the Pokéathlon Dome on certain days.

    As much as many people would like to defend it, Meganium is largely classified as the worst starter for a reason.

    • @3.2187_Kilometres
      @3.2187_Kilometres Před 3 lety +2

      The main reason I personally think that Meganium is the worst is due to the fact that its outclassed in every role it can perform (plus it's balanced stats where clearly made for an in game playthrough in mind not competitive)
      For example I'll go through ever niche Meganium has and explained why it's outclassed;
      1. Bulky grass type, why would you want a bulky grass it's one of the worst defensive typings in the game and Celebi and Tangrowth (hell even eviolite Tangla) have much more consistency when walling things and can do it better while having better supporting moves and abilities (teleport and natural cure for Celebi and Knock off and regenerateor for Tangrowth).
      Swords dance. Leafon, Shiftry, Abomasnow, hell even Leavanny outclasses it in that role due to Dual STAB, better speed and much better movepool.
      A wall in the sun with leaf guard, great now your in the sun where fire types get a boost against you and even if the opponent doesn't have an fire type then magnesium is still too weak to do any damage and so has to relie on toxic stalling plus Grass still has like 50 million weakness so you ain't walling much.
      Sub seed, I would use a much faster mon for sub seeding etc.
      Magnesium just has nothing to stick out.

    I see why you’d use magmar as a fire type, since there aren’t many anyways in these games, but I am currently using Slugma/Macargo. Flame body has been an excellent ability to be able to exploit, especially since it halved the damage of Chuck’s poliwrath, and gets to evolve by level up. The way to get slugma is really stupid, but there’s a website you can go to that generates all the Primo codes by entering your trainer ID. Slugma has proven a useful fire type against Silver’s Bayleef/Meganium, and access to rock type moves by level up offers good flying type coverage, good coverage for certain ice types, and is a defensive tank to boot. Also, Heracross is still a good option who can learn Shadow Claw not only to exploit against Morty and Will in particular, but is an easy way to farm Exp off of them

    From my personal experience is either use Noctowl as a flyer or none. You don't really need a Flyer as you can just grab it from the pc if you need it. Noctowl is at least useful againty morty. Ghost Attacks won't affect it and it can't fall asleep due to it's ability. It also learns Psychic Attacks to hit them effektiv or use Foresight and normal attacks afterwards.
    Rhydons place can be filled with Geodude. Just grab a female one and you're good on the first two gyms. Or use the a password generator and grab the slugma egg in Violet City. It learns Rock Throw at level 11 and wipes the floor with the first two gym leaders. In theory Slugma should perform great in johto. If you get a female chikorita the two of them can beat the first three gyms and Noctowl the fourth. You basiclly just need a water and a psychic pokemon and you're fine

Hell, I beat Claire's Kingdra with it. I'm glad this video shows that an "objectively" bad Pokemon can still be viable so long as you've got a team that covers it's weaknesses and helps it. I always found Typhlosion boring and frankly I absolutely despise fire types. While I do love Feraligatr, water types are way too plentiful and water starters are generally outclassed by more common mons. Exceptions being the Mudkip line, Greninja, and the Poplio line.

    My personal team for HGSS, of which ive managed to complete the games multiple times. The first level is the one around the level i fought the eliter four for the first time and the second level is when i fought Red at mt. Silver.
    Meganium (lv 55 / 75)
    - Petal Dance / Strength (Rock Climb) / Poison Powder / Synthesis
    Noctowl (lv 50 / 65)
    - Uproar (Hyper Beam) / Hypnosis / Extrasensory / Air Slash
    Heracross (Same as Noctowl)
    - Close Combat / Megahorn / Horn Attack (Strength) / Aerial Ace
    Lanturn (Same as Noctowl)
    - Confuse Ray / Surf / Discharge / Signal Beam
    Mamoswine (Same as Noctowl)
    - Ice Shard / Earthquake / Rock Smash / Take Down
    Post game: Houndoom (lv 65)
    - Flamethrower / Sludge Bomb / Crunch / Dark Pulse
    Id be very honest that i was really really shocked that meganium tanked 2 fire blasts from red's charizard with more than 20% health to spare even after hail damage, despite being a good 5-ish levels lower. This helped my battle a lot when poison powder was wearing charizard down and i managed to slowly recover my team with revives and full restores.
    Sending out volt absorb lanturn against pikachu also rocked cause you can land a 50% damage surf on pikachu. Hits once if pikachu uses thunberbolt on first turn and hits twice if pikachu uses quick attack then thunderbolt. 🤣

    tbh i'd change meganium's moveset.
    1. meganium
    - strength (hm)
    - razorleaf (given that you give meganium miracle seed, this move will have aprox. 99 bp with stab and miracle sedd boost. A bonus to this is its high crit ratio) - lvl 6 as a chikorita
    - earthquake (coverage against poison and fire types) - victory road
    - irontail (coverage against ice types) - jasmine
    special mentions:
    - poison powder (used for whitney)
    - synthesis (heal agaisnt whitney)
    - reflect (against physicak attackers, learned at lvl17 as a chikorita and lvl18 as a bayleef)
    tip1: u can leave synthesis and poison powder while you haven't gotten both earthquake and iron tail.
    tip2: use a combination of poison powder and synthesis to beat whitney
    2. Fearow
    - fly (hm and really good move)
    - drill Peck (best flying type move imo) - lvl 37(spearow), lvl47(fearow)
    - return (stab + high damage with max friendship) - goldenrod dpt store.
    - u-turn/steel wing (u-turn is for psychic types and steel wing is against ice and rock types, u can choose what ever u want imo) - bugsy(u-turn), steel wing(route 28).
    note: steel wing is in route 28 so its kinda alr late when u get it.
    special mentions:
    - pursuit (against morty and pesky psychic types)- lvl 13
    - aerial ace/ peck (your moves before you get fly and drill peck) - lvl 1(peck), lvl 17(aerial ace)
    tip1: commit ✨ t h e f t✨ and steal that spearow.
    tip2: once you receive fly, u can replace aerial ace while waiting for drill peck.
    tip3: before u can get drillpeck, have the movesets; fly, assurance, return, u-turn.
