- Our young friend, Park Ho, discovered an old interview with Prof. Wagner, Prof. Peterson's professor at Harvard. Here they discuss Prof. Wagner's pioneering work on jokbo and the Korean examination system. Prof. Wagner said that early Joseon Korea was very different from late Joseon, when you look at the jokbo.

가라 족보가 많기는 하지만 그 정통성과 역사 기록적 유산으로써 보다보면 너무 흥미롭고 재미있고 ㅋㅋㅋ
"가라"라는 표현 좀 쓰지 맙시다. 어차피 뿌리가 같은 한국 사람들의 몸부림이었잖아요. 물론 저 역시 마땅한 어휘는 찾지 못해서 뻘쭘하긴 합니다.
당시 세계는 산업 혁명으로 격변의 시기였습니다. 진작에 일본처럼 개방했어야 했어요. 그랬다면 이렇게 무수한 전통 문화가 파괴되진 않았을 겁니다.
양반이 가정을 꾸리기 위해서 자기 신분에 연연하지 않고 상인이나 기술자를 택하기도 했고, 재력가들이 신분을 바꾸기도 했던 사례들을 저도 잘 압니다.
그 당시 선조들을 비난할 수 있을까요? 오히려 더 현명했던 분들이 아닐까요? 족보를 소중히 여기는 사람들치고 어리석거나 무식한 사람은 못 봤습니다. 설령 친부모가 아닐지라도...

I believe my father had some of professor Wagner’s documents. I believe he was a fan. Wish i had asked him while he was still alive.

Thank you for giving us a glimpse into how historians do their laborious, pioneering research. Your mentor Professor Wagner was truly a diligent and dedicated academic. It must have been really something to learn and be guided by him. And in that old interview clip, his Korean seems excellent. On a humorous note, I had to chuckle when you asked your young scholar friend whether he knew what a punch card was and he answered in the negative! He probably cannot recognize a 5 1/4” floppy disk or even the 3.5” disk… hahaha…there is always something that reminds me how old I am… and getting older. Finally, there must be a story behind the youngest exam writer and the oldest one…77 years old!
