This little lady had been limping. I was called out but the abscess had already worked it’s way up to the coronet and burst out on its own. Good chance to show you Scottish’s cattle chute!
I am too! 🏴 The Hoof GPs crush does make things loads easier! I’m always surprised at how little or no mooing there is I thought it would be soooo noisy & I grew up around farms constant lovely animal sounds!
What people seem to forget is Enoch is a vet, Graham is a hoof trimmer, they could both come together and discuss how to treat an animal but Enoch would have the final say as he out ranks Graham 🤷♂️
I can say one thing lol if youre human, or animal and have an abcess, and you are in SO MUCH PAIN , the minute the incision is made, and the pus is squeezed out..its like instant relief..( i know for ME it is lol) i love the videos where you see them limp in, have it drained then walk away feeling so much better and arent limping like before.
Good on you for educating so many "back seat" hoof trimmers in the comments. You've been more than kind and understanding in the face of some blatantly rude assertions.
I’m Australian and live in Country Victoria. How lucky are we to have this gorgeous vet here!!! He makes house calls, my hooves definitely need looking at! 😍😍😍😆😆😆
Hey there Enoch, I hope you're all well and good down under! I got a kick out of one of your commentators, who obviously watches the hoof trimmers here on CZcams, as I also do, giving you the step by step way you should follow to fix this heifers foot. You're gonna have to get you a mic with a windshield so we can hear you, I did manage to catch you saying something about "the almighty crush" I hope y'all have a good one! 🐂👍🇺🇸
I don't know much about cattle but when you trimmed the hoof after you drained the abcess . Why didn't you put a block on the other claw to take the pressure and pain off the bad claw?
Howdy Jeanette, I use blocks for hooves that need a bit of time to heal, this girl will be e right as rain the next day and will be more comfortable without a block thereafter. Great question though! Cheers!
Love the ingenuity of doing it rope and pulley style in a head gate. Nice little set of Hoof trimming equipment there. The "extended trimmers" also probably work better for cattle that are not in a crush, well handled like dairy, and might leave you with a mark to remember over regular long hoof nippers.
Wow, I feel like I need to apologize for all the well meaning CZcams University hoof trimmer we got here! I think you did a fabulous job, and I'm pretty sure you have more knowledge in your little pinky than all of the good trimmers on CZcams. Lol Those hooves were almost hard enough to throw sparks though! I'd would like to suggest a fur mic cover for your camera, since it's quite windy there. I think you'll be quite pleased at the results!
I think it is funny all the knowitalls on here telling a man who has the proper degrees to do his job HOW to do it better. I would wager most of them have never seen a cow close up. Thank-you for posting.
I learn a lot from Enoch's videos and enjoy his work. Does anyone know why he doesn't use a sedative or tranquilizer when working on these cattles/cows?
He’s expressed when there is an abscess, there is not much feeling in the area due to the infection, pressure and it’s proximity to the surface of the skin
He's not working with them long enough for that. And it cost alit of money. When had to go get work like teeth cleaned on my dog 🐕and and the bill came due its easy $800 us. Cause they have to get sedative. Now imagine it's a 500lb cow.
OMGosh, you guys commented saying: "u need the Hoof GP" and I was just going to say that! We all need to post to the Hoof GP himself and tell him to go to Australia and give a huge consultation to farmers! Another 500K subscribers there!! 😁🐂
Actually, on the really dry, hard feet of those beevies, the bolt cutters work. The part that is hard for me is the rust. They need cleaned, oiled, and kept sharpened. The first time I seen Enoch pull them out, I literally laughed out loud. He is an exceptional old school doc and knows exactly how to "git er done".
@@theunsteadysteader I had a conversation with him about getting a different pair, like by-pass cutters for tree limbs. Yes they need maintenance to say the least. LOL.
you can also Ask for the Midwestern Hoof trimmer Aaron Lavoy and he might be able to go to where you are at and hold a hoof trimming class, and you should consider getting a cow trimming chute for ease of helping cattle!
I think you should spend some time watching videos of Graeme Parker the Hoof GP on CZcams. I think you might benefit from the type of grinding discs that he and Craigie Boy use.
Thanks for the advice, but actually it is a very good one! The disk I use is a specialized hoof trimming disk, made in Europe. the feet here are much much harder than the feet of dairy cattle, as they don’t live in slurry or walk on concrete. We don’t get much in the way of hoof problems and they are pretty easy to treat, and they recover well luckily. Thanks again!
It looks like that hoof wall is way, way, way, too high.... that may be what caused it if it is a white line defect. They need a hoof trimmer if they want this cow out of pain.
In our dry environment this methodology works very very well. I’ve treated thousands this way successfully. In a dairy with soft feet, walking constantly through “slurry”, the scenario may truly be different. Cheers!
Wouldn't a block on the medial claw work to displace her from any pain and slurry getting in the infected claw? You might want to use those hoof blades to carve out as much loose and detached horn well and to open up and lift that infected hoof up more to help relieve any pain and discomfort big mama is feeling. Salicylate powder (to help in healing and pain, apply after lido) and lidocaine 10% (apply 1st) would probably help as well to assist in the pain relief, along with a loose wrapping as well. I learned this watching The Hoof GP; he's a great hoof trimmer. I'm in no way trying to tell you what to do, but I just wanted to show you another technique used from a professional hoof trimmer I watch and tell you what he does for absesses. Love ya, D
I thought Enoch was going to put a block on the medial claw just to give some relief, but perhaps the antibiotic will work fairly quickly and you can see if it has worked when the animal resumes walking normally.
@Cheryl Millard in the dairy barns far far away... haha. Sometimes well meaning folks step on their own tongues. I do it myself on a regular basis....hahaha
Your a good vet… not for hoof trimming. You have to see where that crack goes, a grinder won’t take care of it, clean it out and put a block on the other side
The pathophysiology of the hoof abscesses we get here on good dry ground are very different than the hoof issues Graeme deals with daily on cows living on concrete and walking through slurry. This cow will be just fine. I use blocks when they are needed (when the affected claw needs extended time to heal). This cow was fine the next day. A block is uncomfortable, but when necessary I use them. I certainly wouldn’t put one on a case like this, nor would most vets or professional hoof trimmers. Cheers!
Dude, why don't you own the things that lock the cow in and lifts the off fhe ground. This is ASKING for then fo break their leg! LOOK HOW INTENSE THAT POSITION IS IN!! That's the equivalent of putting your knees in the ground while doing the butterfly stretch. The one where you sit on the ground, you put your the soles of your feet together and put your knees as close as possible to the ground and put your head to your feet bending forward... That's what this leg is doung... Why are you so rough with them?!? you did nothing but use the most painfuk methods and didn't remove all of of the loose horn. I can tell because you cant do it that fast. Why are you always like this to the cows? Its awful
Howdy Mate, those calf tipping cradles are employed by professional hoof trimmers which service dairies where they treat large numbers of dairy cows which spend their entire lives walking in slurry (liquid feces and mud). I provide veterinary services to tens of thousands of beef cows living in grass. I was taught this method as part of my 9 years of veterinary training. I have used tip cradles, but they are inappropriate in my world. Foot work is 1/2 of 1% of my job and this cow by E benefited greatly from my “quick” job. We do what we can do! Cheers!
