So.... I am incredibly lucky to spend almost all of my working life with Australian cows and cow people, but, the real icing on my cow vet cake is that I am often accompanied by some of the best vet students in the world!

This is a Hollyland remote microphone which plugs into my iPhone 12. I was dubious at first, but it is awesome! We went looking for a calf with a birth defect which has rendered one forelimb useless. The wind was a solo howling, but the Hollyland microphone with a dead cat absolutely nailed it!

Western Australia is free of the species of Liver Fluke Fasciola hepatica, which can cause serious liver damage and even death from secondary infection with clostridial bacteria. To stay this way all animals imported into Western Australia must undergo a regimen of testing for fecal fluke eggs and treatment with flukicides. The Easy Boss E makes big fellas like this easier to treat!

Quite a funky little abscess on a funky little cow! I reckon this might have been a sterile abscess from a vaccine or micro mineral injection. Another stellar performance from my Easy Boss E, thank you Dr. Finlay!

This Cow Abscess is Worth the Wait!

These friends of mine and clients thought this young heifer had either herniated her rumen or had lost her calf leading to the large lump on her right flank. Luckily it was just an uncomplicated abscess! Simple lance and flush and she will heal up quickly and without drama. The key is ventral drainage, removing any clots, and a good flush either dilute betadyne. All good!

Cows, like people, sometimes have wild lumps and bumps, they too get odd growths and tumors. Most are innocuous and benign, but even they can sometimes grow too quickly for their own blood supply or be in a location that is easily traumatized. Either way, sometimes we need to intervene! The bander is often the best way. Coupled with the Easy Boss E this was pretty easy! I will post a follow up ...

Sadly this lovely cow’s calf died in mid gestation. The synchronization program we were using to attempt to AI her stimulated her to try to expel the calf which has mummified. Tail bleeding cows is a remarkably simple way to collect blood samples for diagnostic samples. We collect heaps of samples, for reproduction investigations, for micro mineral analysis, and often as part of a systematic approach to manage BVD. By blood testing a small subset of the replacement heifers we are guided as to the best intervention. If immune, ear notch, if naive then vaccinate!

Bovine papilloma virus. Most young livestock eventually get warts, usually on the face and neck, but sometimes they seem to afflict the glans of the penis. This fella, undergoing a breeding soundness evaluation is failed… but we won’t cull him, we will check him again and hopefully the warts will regress.

3 mls Penicillin, half ml Dexamethasone into subconjunctival space works a treat for pinkeye. Better head restraint would have been a good idea!

Instead of using an elastic band, maybe try with a regular string without elasticity. The elasticity will automatically work to contract.
The elasticity is the key to the procedure. Everything dropped off about five days later with a tiny scar. All good!
