Craig passed his Diploma with flying colours by the way!!!! He really did himself proud ...
... sorry for the click baitie title BTW folks .... "I get checked" didn't have the same ring to it 🤣
Excellent job Craig! Proud of you!
Great news that he got his diploma, he put a lot of effort into that. Well deserved!🥳
How did you get on?
Congrats Craig!!
Clickbait? I don't even read the titles. I see The Hoof GP and I click immediately.
Craig the Champ ;)
Your willingness to have your work scrutinized and judged, not to mention filming the whole process, is very brave and the mark of a true professional! Our world would be so much better if everyone took pride in their work and continually worked to improve their skills as you do!
That's what I appreciate about your channel. The lack of ego. Someone who continues to educate yourself constantly in your field and put the animals needs first is a gift. Keep being you (this goes for you too Craig. Congrats!)
Thanks Ronwyn - I was hesitant putting this video out - continual progression is very important to me and promoting it is even more important
@@TheHoofGP well, you should be proud. Your passion and compassion come through easily. I grew up in the country and it means a lot to me that animals are kept comfortable and safe. At least on the farms you service anyway
Totally agree with, sign of a true professional
@@TheHoofGP Its especially important to put out these kinds of videos too, helps bring that kind of standard out into a larger community and helps to keep the connection between creators (like you) and the viewers (like us, obviously ;p)
@@TheHoofGP I think outside regulation is the last thing hoof trimmers need. It’s fairly self regulating in my opinion. Good cattlemen can recognize a good trimmer and will recommend them to others. Between dairy and beef, it’s such a small community that word gets around fast. The cream rises to the top.
At 73 years old working a hard life few things make me happy. You’re one of them. Thank you for everything. Homer
what is revealed to me is time after time a cow in pain gets into the crush, gets worked on , and is released out the front end and very gently walks, puts weight on the hoof that hurt, now hurts less. The skill and trimming, shaping, using the fast drying glue to hold pads in place is a honorable kindness to the animal. well done sir.......
I think the fact you make frequent videos keeps you from picking up bad habits as you have to constantly check yourself and that you are doing the best job for us to watch.
@UncleCarl that's a very good point! 😊
When you edit, you don't pay huge attention to what you're doing. Only what's boring, superfluous, needs to be hidden, or overplayed, etc. Since he makes a lot of videos and it's a lot of effort, I doubt he'd actually pay attention to his technique and wouldn't know if he's picked up a bad habit unless pointed out by a professional.

Firstly, congratulations Craigie Boy. You out did yourself and got the reward you worked towards and deserve. Secondly, Hoof GP, you are an amazing human being in my eyes. You never seem to be "fazed" about anything you do and put your knowledge, compassion and mind wholeheartedly into your chosen career. I tip my hat to you!! Your crush seems like the most humane and least stressful on the cows.
I completely agree.
Yea... sideways one looked a little stressful for the cow...his face😳🤣

I did not like that “roll crush” at all. By the cow’s eyes...she looked terrified. Plus the trimmer is looking sideways at the hoof.
I would like to see a series of the pros and cons of the different crushes.
I think he has done one before he brought the one he has

I was just thinking the same thing.
Pretty sure its crutch not crush lol but i could be wrong
@@Patqui1313 you're wrong 😉 it's crush, because it "crushes" the cows to stay put
Having knowledge enough to instruct students and having knowledge of trimming almost 200k cows is a huge difference.

I work as a groomer, and thats also not a regulated field in any shape or form, so this really warms my heart! We work hard to make sure we always do the best for our animals and always focus on the animal! Amazing of you to show this! I wish we had this in the grooming industry!
If you don’t mind me asking, would you be able to support a small family working as a groomer? I’m a teacher looking for a career change, and I love working with animals. Unfortunately, my hobby farm isn’t to the point where I can support us yet, but I’ve always been intrigued by the work groomers do. I apologize if I’m being too nosy!
@@thehutch7728 I was a groomer for 24 years. I was a single Mother of 3. While I did have help from my parents, (we lived with them for most of their younger years) I was able to support them and pay my bills. That is not to say, it was a luxurious lifestyle, we had everything we needed. Winter is especially hard on the grooming business, unless you are well established in your area. Summer will try to kill you. The celebrated holidays will try to kill you in the week and day prior to them. Upside of grooming; you get to make your own schedule (if you own your own shop), usually off on Sunday and Monday. Downside to grooming, taking a vacation during normal vacation months is next to impossible if you want to keep your summertime clientele. Find an older groomer that doesnt mind showing you the ropes. Learn and listen, ask questions! Good luck!
I won't take my dogs to a groomer. One of them came back from a trip to the groomers somehow traumatized. So, I've done them myself ever since. I wish I could find one I trusted. But in the end...its a business for them so they're more focused on getting a groom done...not babying a high anxiety Aussie.
Tia Hewett thank you for the insight!
@@melindavansandt5168 Some dogs are just not able to be groomed outside the home, quite possibly at no fault to the groomer. Try a mobile groomer that comes to the home. Basically all your dog should need is a good bath, clean ears, trimmed pads and nails, and of course, a whole lot of brushing/combing at the very least monthly. But the one on one attention by you has its benefits for the dog and you!
Graeme, believe it or not, you are being graded every day. Hoof trimmers and examiners all over the world watch you daily. They learn from the best, the HoofGP!
As a former college professor you did the number one thing for success on an oral exam. You made Celia laugh. That automatically raises your score to the next grade. Well Done!!! I can't wait to take your course. My brother keeps 100 cows in Florida and he is a clueless gentleman farmer. Do you ever do horses or any other kind of animal?
Ooooo Craig getting his diploma! 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️
That first crush though...I'd looked away for a sec to grab my cuppa and when I looked back I was like "Holy crap, it's a flying cow!!" xD
Watching you work this last six months I have grown to respect your care, knowledge and tools. Being a city boy it never occurred to me that horses and cows need foot care for comfort and survival. Great Aunt Boletta and Uncle Walter had a huge dairy farm in Wisconsin USA. As kids we loved the visits, summer get together and weddings that took place there. We kids would disappear into the cavernous barns and play in the hay for hours. Sadly, we never were exposed to the work that it took to maintain that business.
I am glad that there is some sort of oversight because now I know how many different problems the cow claws can have. Thank you so much for your videos and your heart. You are an extraordinary person. God bless the creatures great and small, and their caretakers.
Omg the crush that leaned the cow on its side looked so uncomfortable 😳 that cow wasnt ready for that. I love this channel and i can really tell you take pride in your work, hoof trimming is a true skill and i really enjoy your willingness to learn everything you can about the skill you love. Also you have the best sportsmanship ive seen
I thought exactly the same! That poor animal - you could see the whites of her eyes!
The GP’s crush is undoubtably the Rolls Royce of hoof trimming crushes
All it needs is that little lever that pops out to adjust the cow's hoof then top of the line hehe
The roll over crush just looks awkward.
His crush needs a powered wheel on the tongue of the trailer so they don't have to back it into tight spots and bend doors.
@@anthonyproffitt5341 I doubt the Cows liked it too much either, I guess cost played a big part in the operators choice.
That said, I guess there are also less things that could go wrong and cause down time to the business.
Your humility astounds me. I never seen a more humble person on CZcams. I very much like your attitude and approach to hoof care. Great job Graeme.
I am certain that dairy owners really appreciate the integrity of tests like this and the trimmers who participate.
Meh. I suspect that farmers - who still are very family-based - know who's good and who isn't.
It's good that there's a mechanism for knowledge sharing on a wider scale.
I suspect the reason it's not regulated is because it's a "traditional skill"; there's no reason a farmer wouldn't develop the skills themselves and do things "the old-fashioned way".
@@edwardcullen1739 This guy wasn't in this business all his life. He started somewhere with people putting faith in him and word spreading. If he could do it, others probably did too. It's apparently really cheap to get done too anyway.

You seem to have more heart and compassion for the cows than most people. I have learned so much watching your videos and the different types of problems cows can have with their hooves. You keep it dude, your doing great, and I like the way you treat the cows. 😍 I'm an animal person, so I like all of God's creation!
Just from the brief looks at the other crushes yours looks the more comfortable and least stressful on the cows can see why you paid for it
That rolling crush looks like a torture chamber as does the other where the entire cow was suspended. The cows in those look much less relaxed and way more stressed out and who could blame them.
Wild eyed cow in that roll over thing was scary!
I grew up on a small farm surrounded by dairy farms. I love watching your videos. I particularly love the fact that you genuinely care about the cows. It's nice to see. Thanks for your amazing videos and keep them coming!
So cool to see the different types of crushes but yours definitely seems the most comfortable for the cows. That green one that had the cow fully suspended was surprising.
I grew up nearby a dairy farm and it was the best time of my life. I never knew everything that went into the care and well being of the cow. When you're a little visiting friend; you clean stalls and feed the babies and see them grazing but I had no idea how much went into it behind the scenes till I found your channel. Amazing. I really hope I can do this someday. It inspires me that it's something I could aspire to and help my community like you guys.
I'm a 74 yr old lady from Ontario Canada. I came upon your utube videos several months ago and I became hooked. I absolutely love watching it. We went to Scotland three yrs ago to scatter my dad's ashes he had passed several years ago and I saved his ashes to bring to Scotland to scatter them in the highlands. My dad spent his no-good holidays there. He was born in Broxburne outside Edinburgh so I brought him home. I love your respect for the animals and I find it extremely interesting to watch you at your trade. You are so knowledgeable and do a bang on job. You're pretty funny too.
I would love to see you talk about the maintenance your crush requires and hear you talk about what kind of long term wear and tear issues you see it having over the long term.
Wow. That’s ridiculous. I’m glad that you do that. It’s great to know you take it so seriously that you get yourself checked.
This is a perfect example of love, respect, and confidence in your work of which in your field saves animals lives and makes their days comfortable. I just started watching your videos about a month ago, glad i did cause youre a great person.
It is good to see the industry policing themselves and fellow trimmers working together.
Congratulations to you both, to Craigie for doing such a great service to the animals who need looking after,
and to GP, for being a teacher and mentor, and like all the smart ones, you keep looking to learn what you don't know.

@@carolkay7853 I live in WA and I've already looked up schooling for farriers in WA and I found a few here.
Edit: I am not meaning this in a literal or deeply philosophical way. This is a massive animal on tiny tip toes. That's my only thought.
I'm realizing cows are basically very big ballerinas. Those tiny tiny feet for such a big animal.
Some of those crushes look really stressful. I enjoyed seeing yours comparatively. The comfort and feeling of safety for the cow is clearly a part of your thought process. We love ya for it.
This is the most "woman like" comment I have read for a very long time. Cows ballerinas, lol.
@@ReasonAboveEverything Which I find a little funny, because ballerinas are some of the most physical, hardcore athletes on the planet! 😉
But even they have the advantage here. They are light as a summers breeze, and these things are literal tons. 😱 On teeny tiny blocks the size of a cheese wedge, tiptoeing around... It makes no sense but here we are. Just another fact I never once considered before this channel. 🤣
@@sarahkoebler7428 Ballerinas do have mad explosive muscle strength but I wouldn't compare them to cows tho, but I do appreciate the mental picture of a cow performing swan lake.
@@ReasonAboveEverything Christ on a cracker, this was not meant for scientific breakdown. Ballerinas spend a lot of time on their toes, supporting their full weight on a very small space. Cows have very small feet for the large size of animal.
That's it. That's as far in depth this comment was. It is impressive and baffling that they can support their weight on a block the size of a small child's hand. It's like a bee. It doesn't make sense, but here we are.
@@sarahkoebler7428 have you taken a look at the toes/front foot of ballerina's? Most of the time it's not a pretty sight. Cow's feet are not really that tiny all the time, just like with horses they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. (two horses here, one is 5mm taller than the other, yet the tallest one has size 2 shoes, the shortest one has size 4 shoes.)
I'm actually watching this in bed before I go to sleep. Every night for...I don't know how long. A year. Maybe two. It calms me, and I learn new things, and I go to sleep with a smile every time a cow is more comfortable. Especially with serious injuries are all healed up 💜 thank you for sharing.

It’s really awesome to see everybody work together and help where helping was appropriate. Such a cool thing, untimely we all agree the most important part is the comfort of the cattle. Y’all are so great !!!

Heck of a lot more than my previous accounting job ugh...
Didn't know animals needed trimming?! 🤦♂️
Oh man I've never seen you this nervous!! But there's nothing more awesome than seeing the two of you rocking it
To those freaking out about the roll over crush, it is not inhumane. It just squeezes them (like all crushes) and lays the cow at an angle, not even flat. Vets use them all the time because they give access to not just the feet. Chill out.
It might not be outright inhumane, but it seems awfully uncomfortable for just a hoof trim (rather than a more comprehensive vet checkup). The first one he showed in there was clearly extra-anxious, though that might be because it was a new thing for her.
@@Megatron995 it is not any more uncomfortable than laying (lying?) down, which all cows like to do. Maybe not as convenient as the appleton for hoof trimming, but maybe that hoof trimmer uses his crush for other things as well? I just think a lot of people are knee jerk judging that hoof trimmer for no good reason. Animals can get stressed no matter the quality of equipment (and his equipment is high quality) just like people at a dentist office.
No ones freaking out...... Most people can clearly see that for hoof trimming the (which is what they were all doing) the roll over crush looks to be not as friendly (for the cows) then the Appleton crush.... Then again I haven’t asked any cows!!!
🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
You are correct I trim over 20k cows a year in a roll over and also have trimmed thousands of cows in an upright and can say as long as your a careful operator both work very well. The lay over is much easier for 1 person to trim on. I also do a lot of beef bulls (approximately 3k per year) which would be very hard to do with an upright if you know anything about how they work. Bulls just aren't flexible enough to be done in an upright without something bad happening.
I’m a dog groomer, and this is the same sort of thing, just a smaller scale 🤔. We have different expos around the US, and classes available yearly. It’s intriguing to see something similar on the livestock scale. I’m fascinated by your videos btw. ❤️
I don’t like the rollover crushes, cows looked frightened, upright crushes at least make them feel more relaxed, well relaxed as they are going to be. We use rollover crushes for sheep it helps keep them still, not that they relax, but best way.
i love watching your videos. they always make me happy that you help cows. And its also kinda satisfying to watch you do it.

I had no idea you could take a cow completely off its legs!
I always think about aliens 👽 doing this to humans when I see things like this. It helps me to process how helpless we all are on this planet. We'll, anyways. I hope no one else gets abducted by aliens and has to experience what having your life in the hands of something alien (human) is like. But, hey! Experience is everything! And aliens give love too!

Sorry for the suicide. But you're a strange one, there's no denying that. How do you connect aliens & feet? Never mind it's impossible to have cows "completely off their feet" without a device. It's not like he's lifting them with his mind.
Aliens..? They are demonic entities some could be fallen angels … Read your Bible and learn the truth about what is out there ..
Sorry to hear of your loss.
Oh man, this brought back some memories for me! When I was learning Medical Massage Therapy (so I could work in hospitals, cancer patients, senior centers etc) we would get tested just like this. Having someone observe us, asking what we're doing, why we're doing a certain technique vs another, what muscles am I working on, we also had to create an issue for our clients so we could work on it, we would do a written exam, an oral exam which included pictures and having to name muscles, what ifs situations like if the patient says they feel pain in this area but when you massage you don't feel anything where would you think the pain is originating from? It was definitely nerve wrecking and this brought back those 4 years worth of memories haha

Genuine question.....if hoof trimming is not regulated, what gives Celia and John the “authority” to check your work? Have they just been doing it longer or do they have extra qualifications?
They're both fully qualified vets, John owns the practice - but actually you are right - technically they're actually less qualified than I am.
The real reason for me to attend the check day was to help demonstrate how important continual training and progression are and to encourage every trimmer or aspiring trimmer out there to learn and improve as much as they possibly can 🙂

I just can’t get my head around it not being regulated (OBVIOUSLY nothing to do with you)
@@lucysadowski8711 coming at it from a farming perspective, i think it is unregulated so that farmers who wish to do it themselves are able to without expensive permits or certifications. There are already so many expenses to farming that sych regulation would be a huge burden on those farms or hobbyists without a lot of cattle. Granted, most haul to a vet or call in people like Graeme, but Graeme has gone to farms where they do the bulk of the care themselves and call him in for lameness cases only. Farmers do not have a lot of overhead, but they are very interested in education and empowerment. I personally trim my own sheep and goats, but not my horses. That’s really impressive when you consider that’s an industry doing self regulation with no legal requirement. More power,to your elbow Mr Parker.
But industries have been doing this for millenia. The trade guilds of old are quite literally the definition of self regulation.
Honestly more surprising that it's unregulated in the first place.

Graeme, thank you for sharing your work life with us - and the animals (esp Gracie ❤️)! I don’t know how one of your videos showed up in my suggested videos, but I’m happy it did. I’m so invested in the health of these cow’s hooves now lol & can’t stop watching. I love to see how much you care about these animals. Cheers, from Florida!
Hello Stace how’s the weather over there
Your crush looks much more comfortable for the cows than the other crushes, is that a big part of why you chose it over others?
I agree. Some of them looked like they would really be stressful for the cows.
Sarah Koebler I had just commented that the cow in the rollover crush looked super stressed out.
I would think that green crush would be very uncomfortable for the cows.
@@donnajoyner1474 that green one with all 4 legs bent up at the same time looked really uncomfortable! All that pressure on those joints. Ouch!
@@beckyschmidt8347 I don't remember where it was in the video... But I was thinking the same thing until I saw the bands that they put around the cow's body before bending the legs up. So the pressure I think would be in the bands more than the joints.
Not saying that it won't have any pressure but it definitely doesn't look like as much pressure as I originally thought. 👍👍
You absolutely rock! Getting evaluated is always scary when you are a professional but doing it even in an unregulated field for the good of the animals makes you awesome! You have no reason to do this other than professionalism. I knew nothing about hoof trimming before watching your channel a few weeks ago and All I can say is I really enjoy watching. Beautiful videos, thank you for sharing your work with us.
Hello Theresa how’s the weather over there
@@stevenhenry4227 Hi Steven! This week coming up is supposed to be lovely here in the States - partly cloudy and nearly 70F (21C) here in Virginia. :)
I am so glad Craig did well!!! And you...I would expect NOTHING LESS!!! I love your videos and seeing all he cows you and Craig help. Watching you help these beautiful girls and boys moves me.
Way to go good job on the paper work
Out of all those crushes, yours is top notch. The cattle just seem to be more comfortable and the job looks more natural. Congratulations to Craig for earning his diploma! You two are a great team and your clients really benefit from having you both there working together.
Fair play Graeme for showing this vlog...Never in doubt Craig..I've said it before guys about 690k subscribers ago that when a person loves what they do and are great at it but yet want to learn and to improve more at it it's such a reassuring thing...plus the care and total consideration to every individual animals welfare is such heartening in a refreshing Kinda way...🇮🇪☘
Watching your videos makes me want a dog version so I can get them to sit still and work on their claws and paws.
i’d love a crush for my cats.
@@carschmn lol. The visual of that in my mind is hilarious ❣️
@@carschmn ROFL They would NEVER forgive you. Just wrap them in a big, thick towel - like a purrito (pun intended). ;)
For some reason, I just feel like God really appreciates you man. I dont know why, I dont know why I feel the need to say it. But surely God does appreciate what you do. Continue the good work and never stop. Taking care of animals is 90% of the reason we are here.
That’s so cool to see the different styles and machinery used
Tea actually and I mute the TV when listening to you lol xxx
Well done Craig, never doubted you for a moment xxx
Very informative as always Graeme xxx
Love you both xxx
This was so awesome. It's always good to have someone check up on you from time to time. I like that you still go to check days. Congrats to both you and Craig for passing with flying colors! Craig has come a long way.
Hello Kristin how’s the weather over there
Hey bro I am a dairy farmer in NZ and I watch hoof GP all the time. Love watching u trim as I have learnt a lot from u and now I can trim my cows feet with confidence and do a much better job. Just wanted to say thanks a lot buddy keep up the great content...💯
I really enjoy watching your videos. With your professional equipment plus your excellent knowledge, you can impress not only people like myself but also your instructors. Your cows the way they walk out shows that you are making them feel much better. Keep it up young man. Greetings from Southern Arizona.
The term "flying colours"comes to mind! Congrats to Craigie boi! And lovely to see safety glasses in place!
Some day we may even see ear protection. Or does he wear ear plugs and we just don't see them?
@@janinawaz4596 not likely!
Congratulations Craig!! Thank you Graeme for showing us that even though it’s not a regulated practice as such, you’ve found a way to incorporate a practice standard for our bovine counterparts. After this video, thank you for using the Appleton crush as it looked far superior to the green ‘antigravity’ crush & the rollover ‘crush the bovine ribs’ crush. I could only imagine the stress & strain they put on the poor cows.
You’re so welcomed for the total care y’all give..a nice way to start the day
I really appreciate that you teach us so much and your true compassion for your work. I think it's amazing that even though you may not need to go through the process of being graded, you still do it to improve yourself and teach us more. You and your whole team are amazing.
Lol I think you're right Graeme, she probably wished she didn't ask you. 😁
