    The catch by journeyman White Sox outfielder DeWayne Wise, in the 9th inning, that saved Mark Buehrle's perfect game, is arguably the best catch in baseball history. Omitting it is criminal. It appears that the person who compiled this video was more concerned with featuring big name players rather than getting the history correct. (The only time the White Sox are featured in videos is when someone gets shot at the ballpark or when something wacky happens.)

    I think my favorite is one that didn't even make this video because it wasn't actually a home run robbery, but it was Manny Ramirez against the Orioles, makes the catch running full speed towards the wall, jumps against the wall to both stop his momentum and high five a fan (no really)... THEN throws the ball quickly to the infield, where they get the ball to first before the runner could return, for a double play.

      Correct. Just to add a bit more, the player's feet (or maybe it is just a part of the body, I am not sure) must be on or over the field of play when the catch is made. So, they could not fall over the fence, then catch the ball, but if they catch it, then fall over it is a legal catch.

    I love that you guys are doing baseball. This is so cool. I just expect anyone from England to think baseball is the worst thing ever invented. The funny thing about that Cedric Mullins catch in Seattle is that although he saved the game, the next batter hit a home run to tie it and Mullins then hit a home run in the next inning to win the game. These types of catches were relatively unseen prior to 1985. We used to hear the term "Warning Track Power" to describe a players hitting ability (length). With the stronger players, and live ball era, the Warning Track Power of many players, became Fence Power. Thus, these catches started happening more and more.

    It wasn't a home run stealer, but it could've been. Willie Mays robbed Vic Wertz of a hit in the 1954 WS & had he not done so may have resulted in an inside-the-park HR. What was even more impressive was his stop-on-a-dime move to throw the ball back & prevent the runner on 3rd from scoring. I don't remember if you've seen it but it's worth a look if you haven't.

  • @j.frankparnell
    @j.frankparnell Před 6 měsíci +1

    The home run line is no different than the out of play line, ie where seats begin. So if mookie Betts fell over the fence(line) it doesn't matter. As long as he caught the ball before establishing an out of play position , the player is out. Just as leaning into the stands in foul territory ,making the catch, then falling into stands , the player is out. What you cant do is climb into the stands then make a catch or jump over the fence then make a catch

    Griffey was asked by Yankee fans to come and play for them and he said he would retire before playing for them. The New York press was extremely hard on his dad when he played for the Yankees and he hadn't forgotten. I really believe that Griffey loved beating the Yankees more than other teams but that is pure speculation. These were great home run robberies but if you played all the top plays like this it would be well over an hour and maybe more. Check out great throws and you will find one of Ichiro from right field on a line to catch a runner trying to stretch it out to third base and regretting it.

    The catch at 11:20 is the most impressive I've ever seen, although Kevin Pillar is amazing. It wasn't the greatest catch, but perhaps my favorite is when Manny Ramirez of the Red Sox took a home run away from Miguel Cairo at Yankee Stadium in 2004. Cairo ran around the bases with his head down, thinking it was a home run. His teammates in the dugout told him he was out. The camera caught his look of incredulity. As a Red Sox fan, I found it amusing because it was the sort of thing that typically happened to Manny Ramirez, known for his lapses of concentration. There's a short video online titled "Boston Red Sox Manny Ramirez Robs Home Run at Yankee Stadium!"

    Decent video, but other than Jr's catch from the early 90's I think these were all from the 2000's onwards? Anyway, Jay Buhner had a catch at Fenway Park that was criminal for them to omit. Nick may be interested to know Buhner actually DID go all the way over the wall into the bullpen. I remember an interview with him where he said he happened to ask an umpire about the ground rule for that during warm-ups, and was told that as long as his feet had last been in the field of play when he caught it, and when he threw it back, it's a legal catch. So you see him careful to get back over the wall before throwing the ball back to the infield.

    It's a shame that the Endy Chavez catch wasn't included in this highlight reel. Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, tie score, and Chavez robs a home run and turns it into a double play: czcams.com/video/5EaEQVKIDGU/video.html

    Baseball is so wack anymore, I can't even watch it. The financial disparity between teams is so broken and unfair. One team paying just one of their players a yearly salary that amounts to the entire payroll of another team is a complete joke.
