I’ve only played Curious Village to Lost Future I ignored the prequels with the exception of Eternal Diva and I played but never finished Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright because a glitch came towards the end of the game that made it impossible for Phoenix to keep pushing the judge until he’d listen to him like it was meant to. Personally a redone Professor Layton collection of the first 3 games and then a prequel collection would be good especially because now looking back on it I feel like I missed out when I was stubborn and decided not to play the prequels just because I was annoyed it wasn’t picking up from Layton going to visit Luke in America like Lost Future ended

Primarina Queen But just like Phoenix Wright, having him fight using a sword would destroy the whole purpose of having him in the game in the first place.
The reason Wright was fun and interesting in UMvC3 was becuse Capcom took a character who doesn’t fight, and made a move-set out of concepts from his original game to make him work. If Layton doesn’t incorporate logic puzzles in his move-set somehow, stuff that makes him unique and captures the essence of his own games, then it’s just missing the whole point of including a character like him. It’d be a massive waste.

I just beat this game on the 3DS two days ago, so I'll give my thoughts for those who might be interested. The game is fine, but it falls flat as a Layton game. The soundtrack, puzzles, mysteries, and characters are all very mediocre, to the point that I was on auto-pilot for most of the game (which never happened to me with any of the other Layton games). It doesn't help that the game was originally made for phones before being ported to the 3DS and now the Switch, and so the structure involves a collection of small cases with no payoff rather than one big, interesting mystery like in the other Layton games. The game is fine, but it simply doesn't have any of the quality or charm of the rest of the series. Honestly, you'd probably be better off buying it on phones than the Switch, as at least it'd be much cheaper, and you could slowly chip away at it while out and about (the way I think it was intended to be played) rather than in longer play sessions.

    • @steffie8419

I agree, it also feels much more targeted to women (more bubbly, more pink, dressing up) I really didn't like that part. The previous games had a clear style, which was perfect as is. I also had more trouble focussing on this game, even though it's shorter mysteries compressed in one game. I noticed how I would play through the older games and really be immersed in it. Lady Layton was hard to binge, and even harder to pick up. Maybe the story just didn't work for me at all....

As a big Layton fan, this game was pretty disappointing for me. To be fair, I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s just... not a Layton game. At all. Like you said, the whole ‘dressing up’ and bright, pop-ish colours feel wayyyy to hard to appeal to women, to the point that me, a girl, just felt kinda weird playing it. Layton never did something like that.

Yeah, I agree with you guys, the game definitely feels more targeted towards a female demographic than all audiences. Apparently the Layton games were super popular with women, so they made this game the way it is to try to double down on that market. As a man, though, I don't think the cutesy aesthetic and dress up mechanics are what killed the game, it could have been good regardless of their inclusion. I think the biggest factor was that it was a game made for phones, and it just seems like they didn't put as much love or care into it as they did into the other Layton games. It just lacks that soul and charm that makes this series so beloved in the first place. I do wonder, will the next game revolve around Katrielle again, or something new?

To any Layton fans that finished this game and were unsatisfied with the unanswered questions, the anime "Layton Mystery Tanteisha: Katori no Nazotoki File" episodes 10, 20, 34, 35, 49 and 50 all concentrate on Hershel's disappearance. The rest of the episodes are pretty much filler in the same way that the cases in the game felt, so I promise you won't miss out on anything necessary or important save for one or two callbacks to events in a previous yet not relevant episode. The show hasn't been localized, so the only way to watch is with fan subs atm.

Either way, there hasn’t exactly been word of a new Layton game coming out any time soon. I don’t necessarily think the series is over, but I get the feeling Mystery Journey hasn’t sold too well so I have my doubts. If it really is over, this looks like the closest thing to a conclusion atm.

Geo Leo I haven’t check the game (and the rest of the game series yet), but I watched the anime version, which I knew it is different from the game version. I don’t like Katrielle that much as she can be seen as annoying and barely have much character development. But when it comes to... Ernest (or Noah in Japanese), I do think he could be more yet he is the most developed characters in the anime. I think Ernest is a bit more expressive in the anime tho. The bespectacled girl cop (forgot her name) is fun too.
I might change my view if I watched a full play through of this game and compared with the anime.
I only watched the final case (in the game anyway) tho to compared both, and so far I like the mystery behind the game more, but I prefer the emotion delivered in the anime, especially the culprit.

@@rocksterphang7985 First of all, my sincere thanks for sharing your personal thoughs, specially since both of us share the same situation about never being involved with the mentioned franchise, excepting with the 1st anime series to promote the presented game. May I ask, what made you decide to watch it? In my case, besides repeatedly hearing from critics and fans about its popularity and great reception, what also caught my attention of it was its old-school, simplistic and yet charming design of its characters; and after knowing about the anime, I simply couldn't help myself to check it out and understand a bit further the concept behind the games (and well, the facts that Prof. Layton dissapears and, just out of nowhere, we meet his grown-up daughter, plus my love for main characters being female.)
With all that said, from my understanding, the game follows after the events occured in the anime, correct? And I can agree to an extend that the female protagonist can result a bit bland or even annoying because of the formulaic execution implemented in each episode, similar to what we've seen in Scooby Doo with a case to solve for each week (not to mention that some of their explanations become a hell of a stretch, while inviting the viewer to solve the cases logically after all the presented clues & obtained evidences.) While we can find here and there an episode with that kind of ludicrous nature, there were also ones that striked me because of its emotional, endearing and original stories (the cases of the cursed dress and the CEO's daughter aparently having a secret lover behind his back come to my mind as perfect examples.)
And returning to the topic of characters, I wholeheartedly agree about those two you mention, with Ernest backstory and everything revealed about him later on (I enjoyed too how most of the time he broke the fourth wall before introducing the viewer the final part of the case) and the calculative, serious & cool-headed rival of Katrielle; which they should have given her more development and a better detailed backstory to begin with, if you ask me.

@@geoleo965 Well, I first knew about this game when the 3DS version game out back then. It didn't grab my interest as I never followed the previous installments, but I did knew about the mystery of Katrielle's missing father. I only got interested when I saw that it has an anime adaption, so I just watched it out of curiosity. I was kinda worried that I couldn't keep up with the anime when I knew nothing about Layton lore, but I was wrong as I can just watch without knowing anything (albeit I will miss some references here and there). There are some differences between the game and the anime, but I only watched the final case (the Adamas case) to compare the two, and I could say that this case does have a few huge differences.
Be aware that I knew nothing about the game's story and how the characters were written there as I only followed the anime.
I think it is there are a few reason why why Katrielle... for the lack of better word from my side, a bit 'bland' or 'unchanging', is because she doesn't have a huge change in her life as an adult in the anime.
❗Spoiler alert for those who never checked the anime and I guess the final game's case:
Like yeah I like her backstory sprinkled throughout the anime (and I think that is the major reason why people would check the anime to know why Prof. Layton is missing), and the final case in the anime is very heartwarming as she finally reunite with her father with a good build up. Seriously aside from the case where Katrielle got some kind of weird illusion of her father being in a village, we barely ever see Katrielle emote other than being annoying/loud, or nice and strong. I think Katrielle's personality could have be written better in this regard, where she is strong for the most part and she did move on from being sad all the time about her father (and Luke), but there are a few times to let the facade down and see her other personality. Maybe I wished for too much? Eh.
As for episodic format of this anime, I think it sorta benefit from it yet fail in a small part. The format makes it easy to pick up, fast pace and kids can just watch for fun without getting too lost. It kinda failed to develop a few of the key figures. Tho not gonna lie I love the build up of Katrielle's backstory and the mystery behind it, as it is the strongest point in the anime, second goes to Ernest's backstory.
I think Ernest can be a small bit contraditing when it comes to his character, but he is very likable (in fact he is the most likable one out there). He is just silly yet dedicated, which when the final game case happened, you can feel his anger and hate clearer than the game (which can look like a bit silly unintentionally, or... too stoic?). The reason I said it is a small bit contradicting is just that clearly Ernest is good enough to make these puzzles (in both versions), yet he can be very clueless for the most part before this case. Granted some of the cases can be a bit outrageous with its theory, but suddenly made him super smart can be jarring, even if the puzzles were made by himself. This case's mystery is written better in the game as I prefer the 7 Dragons were not aware of Ernest's true identity and how in the end they bowed down to Ernest who teared up hard, but Ernest in the anime has a better backstory and emotes better. Also lol Ernest with a jacket actually looks nice.
But either way, I do enjoyed the anime, and as much there are some stuff I wished it could have fixed better than the game version in the adaptation, but I do like what we have in the anime. Both Ernest case and missing Layton case are the highlights for me. The asthetic is nice and lively, and I think Ernest, the lady cop and Liza are a few of the better written characters, while Sherl is the weakest (because he has no backstory shown there?).
Also nah, I'll chill with it lol

Friendly reminder that this is a port from the 3DS. Additionally, there is also a 50 episode anime series for this particular entry in the series, which is somehow overall _better_ than this game. It includes every case from the game, but most of the episodes are 100% original, including a MUCH more appropriate conclusion. The cases that were already in the game were changed in the anime to fit the 20 minutes per episode pacing, but in my opinion most of them actually got improved in some ways.

Of course, the actual gameplay is important, so I would recommend to watch the anime after you finish the game, even if it means you will know the answer to some of the cases already. And as I said, the anime has a lot of extra story. Theres a lot of actually important stuff that is never mentioned in the game. So if you want to get all of the story you really should watch the anime.

If you want a safer place though, I guess Crunchyroll is good, since it's all "legal" and everything. If you don't mind getting interrupted by (perfectly safe) ads you don't even need an account as far as I know. I've only used it like, once, though, so I don't know. Otherwise, just ask around some.

When this game first came out on mobile I was super excited, and liked the slow pace, rustic London feel of it all. As it progressed though, I found myself pretty disappointed with the overall story. Characters are great, but I really wish there was more of an overarching story (you have to watch the anime to see how it's resolved).

People usually recommend to play the games either chronologically or by release order, either way should be fine. Since you've finished Last Specter, the first game in the chronology, you can continue along that order with Miracle Mask -> Azran Legacy -> Curious Village -> Diabolical Box -> Unwound Future. There's also a movie that happens between Last Specter and Miracle Mask named Eternal Diva that I'd recommend watching, it's a real treat for Layton fans.

I liked the grand scale of the previous Layton games, but many of them had what I felt were unsatisfying conclusions that I don't think lived up to the mystery of the story. The endings were just too out there and felt too contrived. So I think I might actually enjoy the smaller scale mysteries as long as the conclusions actually make sense.

The story was...not quite good, except the last mission and the there were too many out side the box puzzles that i was like hmmm this is too complicated for what they are going for in this game and that means there is a catch to it. indeed maybe there were 10 puzzles that i got stuck but comparing to the other 100 i solved it really seems like i small number of challenging puzzles. i would say to skip this version of layton and instead watch the anime. it has all the cases from this game (with a small twist) and more

I was honestly really disappointed with this game when it originally came to 3DS, not even beating it (although I did get pretty far). This was because of the easier puzzles and focus on humor instead of serious mystery solving with light humor. But I might give it second try with this Switch version. Hopefully we get the main six games on the platform at some point. Great review by the way!!
