- More turmoil is surrounding Elon Musk and Twitter as high-profile staff quit and the rules about verified accounts keep changing.
People on and off the social media platform have been raising concerns about the direction Twitter is going in under its new billionaire leader.
As part of his shake-up of the platform, Mr Musk began rolling out plans to allow users to buy blue-tick verified status for $8 per month. The move raised concerns that Twitter would be swamped with fake accounts.
A US regulator says it is watching events at Twitter with "deep concern" after the platform's top privacy and compliance officers reportedly quit.
BBC Analysis Editor Ros Atkins looks at the twists and turns of Elon Musk’s early days in charge of the social media platform.

When Musk brought the sink to Twitter HQ, he really meant he would sink Twitter

Hey, wait! Where am I supposed to get my porn from?!
@@pierredm And Fox.
Seems like he’s doing the world a favour and killing Twitter!
Twitter's 2022 scent is more skunk than musk!
Nobody wants Twitter killed. It's all the insecure and sensitive humans that want that..
To clarify a few bits. He fired HALF the company within a day and of course, that meant incredibly little review and analysis of where to make cuts. He cut entire teams dedicated to compliance and review of spam accounts, as well as the teams that had been working on the features he wants to launch. He didn't address the company when doing so, an unsigned email fired thousands, only to frantically reach out to many they had fired to come back and finish the work days later.
Twitter is under specific rules for multiple violations of user data privacy, so any new feature is supposed to go through an internal review panel to make sure they don't violate the agreement with the US feds. All executives and leadership in this area have now either been fired, or now resigned on the day before the latest review report to the US feds was due. None apparently wanted the legal liability. Whereas Elon's personal lawyer is seemingly acting as active Twitter legal and telling engineers they can just certify the features themselves. Something they obviously are not trained for and can be personally be held liable for including jail time.
Because the features of the blue checkmark have changed so dramatically multiple times in just 2 weeks, fraudulent impersonation has cost companies like Eli Lilly and Lockheed Martin billions on the stock market when fake tweets by new fake "verified" accounts stated Eli was now making insulin free, and Lockheed would no longer sell to Saudi Arabia. Naturally, no marketing company or leader wants their ads on a platform with so much chaos and they are pulling their ads which Elon has stated as 89% of Twitter revenue. These moves also put Twitter and Elon in clear violation of the deal made with the US feds. Fines could be huge given in May Twitter just paid $150 million in fines for violating user privacy after previous violations as well.
Trying new things and getting Twitter to innovate are going to be critical to it surviving, but doing so recklessly has caused huge amounts of chaos, violated many laws, and now has resulted in the live Twitter services running code directly from test development servers instead of production (many web developers are posting their findings). This happens when you remove all review and QA (quality assurance) testing practices to push out features quickly. There is no reason to be so reckless, getting a new feature out in a week has only opened Twitter and Elon to more lawsuits and unintentional data/security instability.
This is a case study in how NOT to 1) treat people who work for you, trust is incredibly low, recruitment of new talent will require huge $$, 2) execute new features, burning people out and skipping testing/verification steps has cost Elon trust and likely multiple large lawsuits and penalties.
You seem very invested, is he the new orange man bad?
Lockheed Martin don't lose billions in stock value because of a parody twitter account. The mere suggestion undermines any useful points you've raised.
He kept the engineers, he just fired the 10 bosses each engineer had.
Personally, I have no sympathy for the employees he fired, they are hardly human (joke)
They were loosing money, now they are making money. Any questions? 😂

Winston Churchill did not win us the war, he commanded people who did. Schumacher did not win 7 titles on his own, he had a huge well funded team of engineers behind him. But nobody remembers the Ferrari pit crews names, nobody remembers the names of the junior physics graduates that worked on the Manhattan project. Because the lead role is clearly the most influential and important role

Why is this big news, this dude literally payed billions for this company, he can do whatever he wants since he is the ceo, if it goes down its on him no one is forced also to stay on Twitter we have the choice of using plenty of other social networks, at the end of the day he's the ceo of his own private company.
I think the other shareholders might disagree with you. And many of the employees he's fired had severance clauses in their contracts that he has ignored. The FCC had stipulations in place due to previous data breach violations, again, which he has ignored. Eli Lilly and Lockheed Martin are just two of the companies that have lost hundreds of millions in stock value because of his BS. @@bradleynoneofyourbizz5341 but he is still the ceo and thus can do whatever he wants since he has to have more shares then the rest of the share holders thus he is the majority and can make the decisions he wants, including if he wants to change the course of the direction of the company remeber just because you have shares in a company dosent mean the company is obligated to make the share holders more money the share holders simply own shares beacuse they belive that company will increase in valuation, and for the contracts they kinda don't stand since they were agreed upon by 1 party and a 1 other party that wasent Elon musk so in court u could argue that the contract should be renegotiated but it would only happen if Elon musk would agree, since it is now under a different administration,
