- Hundreds of thousands of photographs from the Holocaust are being scanned with the help of an algorithm to identify the people in them.
Software engineer Daniel Patt’s programme, From Numbers to Names, uses facial recognition technology to gives probabilities of facial matches from different photos.
One search managed to identify Holocaust survivor Blanche Fixler in a photo she had never seen before, taken in France, which was on display at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York.
“To give somebody a name, you are restoring someone’s own dignity to them, some comfort to their family. It is a form of memorial to the entire Jewish community,” said Scott Miller, exhibit curator of the museum.
There are hundreds of thousands of people murdered by the Nazis, for which there are pictures, but no names.

The search that led to these discovered photos was prompted by a Tweet about Bronia Bruenner (now Blanche).
In addition to her aunt, she was also able to identify her younger cousin who she helped take care of during the war.
The truth fears no investigation.

At 17 (I'm 63) a colleague in Golders Green took me to his house for tea, and I met his uncle, as we shook hands I noticed tattoos of numbers on his wrist. This was a moving experience I'll never forget, and I teach my granddaughters his story, especially now with war again in Europe.
You definitely should. These stories are so unbelievably horrifying that future generations are at risk of being desensitized to them, or in the worst case may start believing that it didn't happen.
My wife and I were sitting in the airport in Atlanta forty years ago when she noticed the tattoo on the arm of the little old lady sitting next to us. I still remember the sense of alarm I felt when I saw it. My wife and I were both United Methodist clergy at that time and we had just completed a course with nazi-hunter Dr. Robert Herzstein, the man who brought down war criminal and UN Secretary Kurt Waldheim. Although it is beneficial to study The Holocaust in an academic setting, there is nothing quite like standing in the presence of a fellow human being who encountered evil on an unimaginable scale, yet managed to survive.

Why are we still talking about this when we are told to overlook the Holocaust in Afghanistan and Iraq? 3-4 million innocent people were slaughtered by the US and UK . I don’t see any memorials or wreath laying for them yet we remember WW2 .

I found a photo as a postcard of three elegant people in summer dresses on a promenade in
Cannes - the town of the flowers. .
These were pictures that photographers took at vacation spots and offer them directly to the visitors.
So the picture could immediately sent as a postcard to friends and the family.
A very modern service in those days.
Pictured are two men and a woman, around 50 years old.
They are Jews of Russian origin.
I was able to determine this based on the last name.
They lived in the Tiergarten district of Berlin, where many celebrities and intellectuals lived.
The entire district was completely destroyed during World War II and some streets were never rebuilt, like the Bendler Street, the address of the postcard.
The addressee was Doctor Silber, also a Jewish name.
The card is dated from 1927.
On the back it is written:
“Isn’t mom fancy?”

I think finding who people were is worth the effort whenever possible. Maybe there are records Nazis missed too, that would help, like those IBM keypunch cards in Europe the Nazis had . Where did they go? Might they be in European cities in cities once occupied by Nazis in govt. Building Basements?

How many times a week per year do we have to hear about the holocaust, the holocaust is over, tell us about the Germans that were in concentration camps, what about black that were being persecuted by Germans from 1890 to 1945, what about other religious people and races that the Germans killed, have some respect for them by mentioning them instead of the same old story, which we've all heard a million times.
