Now Imagine you're in a B-29. It's 1945 and you're flying over Tokyo. Only difference is it's a clear night.

July 4, 2001 I was returning to Dayton Ohio from our honeymoon. At 10pm we were over Kentucky and watched fireworks below us all the way back from there. It was a one in a lifetime unplanned thing, but I have thought of planning a trip just to see it again.

I flew 50k miles a year in my previous life, flying through many storms like this. The fun really starts when a lightning bolt hits the plane! WOW! The captain tried to calm the passengers down with the following comment: " Folks this is your captain and as you either saw or felt we were hit with a bolt of lightning. But don't worry, thanks to Benjamin Franklin and his lightning rod, we are fine" (pause) "I would like to ask those of you on the right side of the plane. Does the engine sound funny to you?" 🤣🤣 Many of us were ROTFL... but for a few passengers, the joke missed its mark! 😄😅

When I see lightning from the air I imagine what it been like if there was a battle down below with all the muzzle flashes going off like at the end of the scene in saving Private Ryan when they’re in the church getting some R&R and you see outside and the battle in the distance

I used to live in Hiawatha Kansas for a few years, and met a girl, who I ended up dating. On one of our dates, a large lighting storm came into the area, so we drove out to see it. We weren't in it, but near it. Hiawatha Kansas is located in farm land, away from larger towns such as Topeka, or Saint Jo. So there is not a lot of light bleed into the night sky. This means if you drive out of town, even just a few hundred yards, the night sky becomes very black, and you can see far off into the sky and heavens. We got outside town and parked, and the light night in the clouds off in the distance was absolutely breathtaking. It wasn't just a small patch of sky but the entire horizon off in the distance. There were literally 30-40 bolts of lightning just firing off in the clouds repeatedly. We stood here for 15-20 minutes in stunned silence. It was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen, that will remain with me for the rest of my life.
