Will Ferrell on the origins of "Jaja Ding Dong," Eurovision Song Contest's catchiest cut

- Will Ferrell isn’t just the star of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga. He’s also its writer and producer. He even birthed the initial idea for the story after a late ‘90s viewing of the contest with his wife’s Swedish family. Entranced by the club pop and out-there characters, Ferrell fell in love with the massive, but somehow missed by the U.S. contest, and thus a film was born.
The A.V. Club talked to Ferrell about what the people who make Eurovision actually happen said when he approached them with the idea, whether he’s at all worried Americans won’t catch all the cameos, and just where the film’s catchiest hit, “Jaja Ding Dong,” was born. Ding dong!

It's so rare to see a mainstream film that is Europe-centric rather than US - it's good for American audiences to realise that there are things in the world that are huge even if they are not involved in them. I'm glad that Ferrell did the tongue-in-cheek bit with Americans in the movie.
Huge in Europe isn't exactly huge. It takes all of Europe to make the population of the USA and Canada combined. We have in two nations the population Europe has in...
How many countries are in Europe now? 50?
On second thought, who cares.
@@pakde8002 According to WIkipedia, there are between 100-600 million viewers internationally, and obviously it's watched not just in Europe but also abroad, e.g. Australia and US. I don't know about you but that sounds huge to me ;)
You’re kidding right?! Europe has over double the population of the United States.
People in China have also been watching for years now
@@pakde8002 You cared enough to leave a careless comment. Eurovision is huge, and huge in Europe IS huge - as in grand of scale, production, audience, and appeal - it's not a matter of population numbers. Something so quirky and fun and entertaining as Eurovision, like the original comment said, is good for non-Europeans to see. And guess what, here in Canada, some of us actually notice things happening in the outside world...
The elves went too far!
That little knife was the best part!
That was one of the lines that was actually really funny.
@@fernando.tomina that was funny, but the line quoted was used when the boat exploded.
@@davidmayberry3190 True!
@@fernando.tomina I've lost it when those little doors closed.
"And the Oscar for Best Song goes to...Ja Ja Ding Dong!"
Yes.....we must make this happen
Indeed! Can only wish for that to happen..
It will never be enough
More like:
Host: "And the Oscar for Best Song goes to...Husavik!"
Everyone: NO!!! We want JA JA DING DONG!!! Come back here and give the Oscar to Ja Ja DIng Dong!!!!!
I'm thinking that this could be possibly a very good thing....ja?
I need a Fire Saga t-shirt now more than anything else
SAME!!
me tooo!!!
I want one as well.
ditto!
Red bubble has them 🤘🏻 you're welcome
As a German and Eurovision Song contest fan, this movie came at the absolutely perfect time, because the contest was cancelled and I still didn't have to go without my fix.
Thank you so much Will Ferrell 👍🥰
I felt the same
When I saw the preview on Netflix, I was like...wtf is this. Watched the movie and absolutely loved it. Love that my fellow Canadian Rachel McAdams was so funny in this. It's nice to see her comedic side.
She's really great in Game Night too.
Youve never seen Hot Chick?!?! Ur missing out
Honestly it was much better than expected. I watched for Rybak, stayed for the amazing songs and heartwarming story
Completely agree. I was very worried about an American perspective of "haha look at the crazy Europeans", but it was actually very Eurovision-like and just the right amount of crazy. And the music was great too :)
Kinda same, only in my case I initially started watching for Salvador Sobral, but it turned out the movie is interesting itself and has absolutely amazing music in it.
@@voloshanca o yea, Salvador is pretty neat as well
well this was the perfect year to release the move, as it the first year to ever be canceled i think
True huh?
A great bandaid 😌
And the Icelandic submission would have definitely won this year
Zedbrains yeah that’s true - they were def one of the biggest favourites. How ironic.
@@Nooblolftw nuh uh! The Russian one would have won 100%
How can we thank him? Seriously I'm so grateful to finally getting to watch a heartwarming decent fun genuine movie on Netflix. Thank you!!!
Fr!!! Made me forget about all the bad stufd going on outside. 🤠
Just watch the movie, maybe a few times. Netflix will thank him for you!
Netflix UK have an Instagram page, I thanked them from the bottom of my heart 💖
@@borismuller86 Yaay:)
Just watch Klaus. It's great out of season too.
I usually don't like Will Ferrell movies, they are so over-the-top. This one is way over-the-top too, but somehow, I LOVE IT!
That because his films are usually unrealistic, but Eurovision is just as over-the-top as his comedy anyway
I think Rachel McAdams kind of saved the film. I am a fan of Ferrell but I feel like this movie succeeded inspite of him, not because of him.
100% same, first film of his that i love lol
Im thinking "over the top" is synonymous with whoosh. Will Ferrell is literally the funniest man on the planet Earth. Actually, make that the funniest creature in the known universe including most of the parallel ones too.
hamster wheel over-the-top? Yes, but it was hilarious.
I love that there are some hints which are more for a eurovision/european audience.
I actually got tears in my eyes at the end when she sang her song. I was really fun.
When will it be enough! It will never be enough!! All I want to hear is JAJA DING DONG!!!!!!!
I already have 100 hours on that song, it has been playing on loop ever since I watched the movie.
Jaja ding dong the future wedding song staple.
Will def play it in mine. 😂
PLAY JA JA DING DONG
LOOL
PLAY IT !!!
LARS, GET BACK IN HERE AND PLAY JAJA DING DONG!
But what about a song from Eurovision?
Harsh Raythattha I ONLY WANT JA JA DING DONG
I now have Volcano Man as my phone ringtone..
This movie was pitch perfect meets zoolander, and it was very entertaining. Great cinemetography also.
The synchronized whales were great!!!🐋🐋
The synchronized whales were great!!!🐋🐋
Volcano man is a catchier song 🤷♂️ they should’ve made a full length version
Yes! I can't stand when movies do this! Misty Mountains from The Hobbit is another one that's too short
@@ryebreadpudding366 Check out Clamavi de Profundis, they sing the entirety of Tolkien's Misty Mountains
@@benharder7816I name you Elf-friend, and may the stars shine upon the end of your road
Yes!!!!!
VOLCANO MAAAAAN
Ferrell going for an “electrocuted Marv from Home Alone” coif these days.
At least he's obeying the stay in the house request. Not salon shaming, just giving extra credit to someone who cares more about health care workers and old people than his hair style.
Or Lemony Snicket
Wow what a hole
Yeah, but why is he purple?
Looking like Doc from back to the future
This is the most serious I’ve ever seen Will in an interview.
I don’t think I want to dissect this story. I do very much love it and for me that’s enough. “I see you. There you are. Here I am. I’m checking you out. I’m checking you out.”
Wish they could let Iceland perform ya ya ding dong next year😁
I'm 90% certain Jaja Ding Dong is gonna be featured in some way in the next Eurovision.
Just a note (though I'm sure you weren't serious), Icelandic Public Television only accepts songs that have at least one Icelandic song-writer. Jaja Ding Dong, while a beautiful anthem to love, was not written by Icelanders.
@@rovhalt6650 - It'd be great if Rachel and Will came out in a surprise cameo!
Edit: But if they actually sang, I wonder if they would bring out Molly Saden instead
You should check out the real Iceland contestant for Eurovision this year. Had there been no corona, for sure Iceland was gonna win.
@@liliachan3753 definitely! I loved their song and felt really sorry for them, when ESC was cancelled. I am sure, they had won otherwise...
15 sec in and he says "non-plussed" instead of shocked and confused. He's actually quite eloquent in his speech and composure, which is yet again another testament to his acting.
The songs in this film are so spot on! Whoever wrote these clearly must love Eurovision. I hope it will get at least referenced next year when fingers crossed the competition will be held again, but I'd love it if Fire Saga got to perform during the break.
THE ELVES HAVE GONE TOO FAR!!! Because, this movie has saved 2020 💕❤️💕 thank for loving and respecting our Eurovision 💕❤️💕 it IS a love letter!!!
To the writer, producers, director, cast & crew, composers, writers of the original songs, and specifically Will & Rachel, I want to take this moment to say "thank you". From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. Thank you for producing the funniest, most heartfelt comedy of the year. At a time of unprecedented darkness and despair, you graced us with a feel-good experience full of inspiration, love, kindness, and an absolutely amazing collection of original songs that will most assuredly make this movie a cult classic for years and decades to come. This movie is exactly what the world, as well as me personally, needed. Please know that you are greatly appreciated for the gift you have bestowed upon us. Thank you so very much.
What makes Fire Saga such a joy to watch is how much they blend in reality with fiction and all the cameo appreciates from people as themselves are really hilarious to see if you know who they are.
Will!!
You do know that the Netherlands WON Eurovision in 1975 with the song “Ding-a-Dong”?
Their lyrics actually include the line “ when you walk around with your ding ding dong”
There's also a Swedish song called Ding Dong, sung by Lasse Berghagen, who represented Sweden in ESC 1975. The song is about him singing it, when he is feeling happy.
Jaja ding dong would probably win eurovision 2021....Ireland should do it...get back winning again!!😂
It will bankrupt the country. czcams.com/video/RLtgbAoy27Q/video.html
My little horse 🐴
Ireland?
Ireland? Do you mean Iceland?
The Netherlands won with a song called "Ding-a-dong" in 1975. It's pretty terrible 🤮
I'm glad the american audience enjoyed seeing our Eurovision culture. It was similar to me as a brit enjoying Talladega Nights :)
American here. I had no idea who any of the people were, but it made me curious about them and I started looking up their performances. So much amazing talent in the world! ❤️
👏😁💗💗💗 Welcome to the world outside of the USA!
This is a movie that could have failed at so many points and didn't. What they attempted was really difficult and it comes across in such a fun loving entertaining way.
This movie is such an amazing light in the darkness that has covered us all lately. I might be biased because I lived right outside of Húsavík during my international hospitality internship but it is such a humorous and wholesome story
I love it, such a fresh air for this year
I love this guy😆 he always changes my mood positive way.
I didn't expect to love this movie as much as I did! It's really grown on me and will probably forever be one of my favorites!! 😂❤️❤️
The Elves went too far this time.
"I WANT JAJA DING DONG!"
This movie is a feel good, funny, over-the-top, ball of epicness and I thoroughly enjoyed it😂😂❤️❤️❤️.....espically after I found out that Eurovision was a real thing🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I found out Eurovision was a real thing after the movie. And I just found out that those cameos in the movie were real celebrities from this video.
hope you'll watch next year!! i would love for more americans to watch it, there are SO MANY great artists that become famous in europe thanks to it and im sure they could be a hit in the us too. check out mahmood, for example! he was huge in europe last year
Will Ferrell did an awesome job. I loved the movie and it took on a life of its own. In my lifetime this movie was one of the best movie I ever saw. Not only did this movie touch on all of my emotions but the ending left me feeling great. This movie reminded me of when the Beatles came to America. A lot of Cheers and tears went into watching this movie. Warning ⚠️ Don’t watch if you don’t want to cry. Deep emotional experience 😂. Thank you Will!
Loved every second of this film. Also, I want Will’s shirt!
When I found out that eurovisiom as a thing It blew my mind. Day 4 after watching. I'm still watching interviews and jaja ding dong songs.
This movie is so fun to watch! You have to watch it!
Perfect movie! Instant classic 💖
2020 was the perfect year to release this film as we all suffer from Eurovision withdrawal symptoms as it was cancelled due to the corona pandemic. This film makes up for it!
I love Euro Vision!! I think that it was done with good taste, and Will got it right down to the songs they played, and the people who played the characters. Awesome!!!! I love this song too!!!
As an American I'm so happy to be exposed to Eurovision!
I sooooooo love this film and need the T-Shirt, such a great film in such bizarre times.
This brought me to Eurovision binge watching!!!! 😅😍😍😍
Brilliant film, Loved it.. Well done to Will , cast including all the Eurovision singers.
I died when Alexander rybak popped up 😂
omg i love this move it is sooo good
One of my husband's favorites bands was on eurovison and I believe won back in 2006 so we knew what that was and we are absolutely obsessed with this movie
Lordi?
I REALLY LOVE THE MOVIE ! The songs a amazing!
Bloody hell, that was the shortest interview i've ever watched!
I loved this movie!! ❤️❤️
This movie was hilariously awesome!
It is a great movie. Loved it, absolutely loved it.
I remember stumbling upon Eurovision (as an American) right after I discovered Lordi, then I found out Abba won with Waterloo, and eventually I just became obsessed with so many of the other artists that had won over the years. I always felt like the only American that cared about Eurovision but now I don’t feel alone, I’m glad they brought this to the mainstream American audience.
You know Celine Dion won?
IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH! I ONLY WANT TO HEAR JAJA DING DONG!
My love for this movie is growing wide and long
Yeah, you had amazing songwriters!!!!!!! 🙌🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yep I had no idea that Euro❤️ision was a thing until very recently. Both are awesome
Loved the movie and the t-shirt is great..
I watched it yesterday with friends for my birthday and we loved the movie, after it finished could not stop singing JA Ja Ding Dong, I need full version of it, maybe it could not win the real Eurovision but it would like now become people's favourite for sure
On Apple Music there’s the full version I believe
It's on the major music distributors. Made it to my Spotify playlist....
Will has channelled Mugatu for this interview :-)
Brilliant movie 😆😊 They nailed so many Eurovision memes 😂😂😂
Will Ferrell thanks for this amazing films!)
I love the t-shirt!
Love this movie!!
He took way too long to play ja ja ding dong
Surprisingly a good watchable movie 👍
This is number one in Iceland and I watched half of the movie and are probably going to finish the movie tonight because I am very very very up it is midnight it’s almost 1 am but really good video
My husband and I loved loved this movie
i just watched this film and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its the first film ive enjoyed for years.
Good entertainment. Although when he berates the Americans he should have mentioned them pulling down statues lol.
.....never hear of any of these people and Eurovision... lol Man I need to expand my bubble outside of the US.
"My love for you is growing wide and long" hehe
At first, I wasn't aware that the performers in the film were real Eurovision performers. It made me want to look them up and now I'm purchasing their music.
Will Ferrell will go down as one of the greatest comedians of all time. And all these negative comments on him. Some people can not see greatness.
Next time I go to Oktoberfest, I fully expect Jaja Ding Dong to be played!
Ahhhhh ESC and Graham Norton , it had to happen (in this movie)😁👍🇮🇸Fire saga❤
Jaja Ding Dong, Double Trouble & Husavik are great representations of the kind of songs that actually made it to Eurovision stage 😆😆😆
PLAY JAJADINGDONG!
It’s so nice to see Will Ferrell be his self and not in character for an interview
Finland 2013 Eurovision song "Marry me" (Krista Siegfrids) had lots of "Ding dong" in the chorus
I looooove ja ja ding dong
If Netflix had submitted Ja Ja Ding Dong, they would have won the Oscar
never heard of Eurovision before until I saw this movie
"You hit me very light - like silky kitty fists in marshmallow boxing gloves"
Lol, didn't really pick up on this when I watched the movie.
They cut that part of the scene. It's not in the movie, just in the trailer. 😿
As an American I got all the cameo references cause I love Eurovision! ☺️☺️☺️
TALK ABOUT JAJA DING DONG!
:Talks about Eurovision:
TALK ABOUT JAJA DING DONG!
TALK ABOUT IT AGAIN!
It has to have been inspired by Ding A Dong by Teach In, which is a former Eurovision song.
Excellent film
"Like silky kitty fists in marshmallow boxing gloves" That's not in the netflix cut! Where is the director's cut??
A very fun movie indeed, thumbs up from me 👍👍
He keeps on looking more and more like the mayor of who ville in the grinch
OK, now I like Will more than before.
As a North American I have now searched for a lot of the singers music from Eurovision because of the movie
Fire Sage needs to go on tour with Spinal Tap
I want that shirt!
