I've known that I'm an introvert, and always have been. I grew up in the Philippines where my parents divorced and my mom worked her ass off to support me and my brother. With that, I lived with my grandma whom I still hated even today after her passing for keeping me locked in her house in her attempt to prevent me from learning bad things from bad kids instead of making an effort to teach me from right and wrong. Because of this, I was deprived of a chance to learn to interact with other kids in my age, and was forced to rely in self-sustaining hobbies such as playing video games. Of course by the time I became a teenager, well I was behind in my social skills and was viewed as awkward by my high school classmates so I decided to just be by myself for the coming years. During those times, however, I grew to love bicycles because of how adventurous it made me feel, and soon started getting attracted to motorcycles. I could have ridden at a younger age, but my parents were against motorcycles so I never thought of riding one until I joined the military. But even during the military, I didn't start riding because I have mistakenly convinced myself that motorcycles are dangerous and not worth the risk, and continued that way until I told my chief about my interest and reluctance in motorcycles. He told me that I should have started riding a long time ago, and 'I only live once' so why not try it since everything in life has a RISK anyway. So, at that point I decided to pull my head out of my ass, and took a motorcycle class. So everyone, especially to those who are still young. If there's is something you want to do, JUST DO IT. Life is too short for a person to even do everything s/he could have wanted.
I have hundreds of reasons why I wanted to ride a motorcycle. Some are petty, while others are great reasons but perhaps the greatest reason is to feed my long years of repressed desire for adventure which I always wanted as a kid but barely had. I just passed my CMSP with flying colors last weekend, and can't wait to get my class CM1 license and my DRZ400SM. Being an introvert, yeah, I'm riding alone, having fun. Cheers.

I've always been a quiet, meticulous, and well thought out person. I only just got into motorcycles this year, and the first time I took my '71 Honda CB100 restoration project out, the only place I wanted to go was down a wooded path to an old abandoned church to just sit, relax, and tune my carburetor; just me, my bike, and my thoughts. It was the best day of this summer! Now I'm looking for a bigger bike for more adventures.
    P.S. I'm also a drummer! Lolz.

Yup, I've always known I'm an introvert. The only thing I regret about learning to ride is waiting so long to do it.
You completely nailed it. I'm "perpetually restoring" my ratty Nighthawk 750. Good thing the Vulcan 500 is fun and reliable... There isn't much better than filling the tank and heading a random direction.
BTW, canoeing and kayaking are great introvert pastimes. Take it up a notch in difficulty/skill and *whitewater canoe*. "Half the paddle, twice the man" :)
I don't think it's truly an adrenalin rush that we seek, rather, the intense moments of focus. On a whitewater trip in some technical water, I had to pull what felt like an epic move to prevent capsizing (I failed). A fellow boater said he'd never seen anyone "fight for it" so intensely before. Being in "the zone" is a magic place for introverts, or at least this INTP.

    • @Brownbrady
      @Brownbrady  Před 9 lety

Doug Elick Well I wish you luck in restoring your Nighthawk 750, from a fellow Nighthawk owner. I haven't gone canoeing yet but I did consider it last fall. I agree, I enjoy those intense moments of focus! But I'm not sure if I'm an INTP like you, but someone suggested I might be ISTP.

I totally agree with this video, and admire the very unique perspective. I always chalked it up to matching one's personality to a specific type of bike, and that motorcycling has something for everyone on this scale. Go to a meetup with lots of people on cruisers and often you'll find mostly extroverts -- ask them about riding, and they'll usually say something like how they build up stress and just want to relax and decompress. On the other hand, find a sportbike meetup and there's a lot of softspoken people. I say we (since that's me) enjoy having the sense of control over something. I can ride like a grandma if I want to, yet there's something both exciting and relieving about being on a machine capable of conquering any road I'm on.

Found this video on Reddit and yes, I am an introvert that loves motorcycles. After a few years of riding and have had a regular group or riders I ride with, I've gotten to the point that I don't enjoy riding in large groups as much. I think there are only a few people I do not mind riding with because of their riding style but most of all it has to do with safety of how they ride. I guess it it depends on mood because most of the time I rather be alone so I don't have to worry about anyone's safety but my own. Like you mentioned I really enjoy the solitude of riding by myself. Anyways great video, I made a motovlog of myself explaining about me being an introvert but I deleted it and I may do another video because I understand it more than the last time I motovlogged about it.

You are accurate on all points. I used to surf all the time growing up in Hawaii. While doing that sport I almost drowned two times after wiping out by huge waves. When I ride my motorcycle I never ever ride with anyone else. I go wherever I please at whatever speed I choose not having to worry about keeping up with the group. I am very focused while riding and to me motorcycle riding is the lazy mans zen! Yes, I guess I qualify as an introvert. I really don't have any close friends that I would go out and have a beer with and I am quite OK with that.

I was always extremely introverted as a child, but slightly less so as I matured. I was over 50 y/o when I started riding, and I became much more outgoing pretty quickly. My thing is that I'm "socially awkward." For reasons I won't go into, I did not socialize much early in life. I have also NEVER been one for "small talk," which always seemed a waste of time to me. I found serious discussions more engaging, but before the internet, I never had much opportunity for that. I went through a phase where I went out to clubs, but generally spent my time sitting alone, and did not find that very fulfilling. When I married, I was content to always come straight home from work every day, only to work on hobbies, mostly alone. When I started riding bikes, it was like becoming part of a huge fraternity, and I was initially somewhat uncomfortable when strangers approached me, but the more I learned about bikes, the more fulfilling and engaging these chance encounters became. After 3 years, I actually initiate conversations sometimes. Even introverts need some social interaction, and that has been a delightful bonus that resulted from my choice to start riding. When I want to be alone, I need only fill my tank and ride. If I feel the need for interaction, I can stop just about anywhere and meet someone with whom I can relate.

One of the other reasons to ride alone is that the other riders in a group are all over the place as far as skill level, experience and attitude. Hey BrownBrady,
I was trying to explain this to my family as to why I love riding so much... I was saying being alone with just you, the road and your thoughts is almost like a kind of therapy for me. Most of my family are extroverts so don’t get it.
Thanks for this video. I’ll send this to them and maybe they’ll stop the obligatory “but motorcycles are so dangerous” speech’s lol.
    Darren

About multitasking: I once read that when women say that they are good at multitasking, it just means that they are doing a whole bunch of things in a half-assed way. I told this to a female friend. She said, "Unlike men, who do just one thing in a half-assed way."

Best job I ever had. Motorcycle Courier. I'm in the UK and would ride anything from 100 up to 700 miles a day, right through the year. I got one British pound for each item I carried per mile during normal working hours, £1.50 after 6pm and £2 after 8pm. Weekends £2. I only got paid one way. That is nothing coming back from a job. Do the math, 3 items 200 miles to the destination, night run. However, that's not why I liked it, it was because I had no boss looking over my shoulder and spent the whole time thinking my thoughts. Used a BMW R100RT for work, so easy to maintain anyone with minimal skills could keep it going indefinitely and a Kawasaki ZZR1100 for fun. If you are an introvert this is the career choice for you.

I always thought I was the most unlikely guy to be into motorcycles, now I know I'm a prime candidate! I guess all 5 apply to me. I will say, the next level of discussion is the type of bike, I'm not a sports bike rider, waaaay to mad for me. But then the bikes I like are waaaay too boring for others. They are always full of surprises, risk, danger, excitement and adrenaline. I recall my RD200 as it got over the 6000rpm, I became a different person, one I'd rather not be, I wanted all my limbs intact.

I am clearly Extrovert, I sold CLASSIC CARS, FOR 20 YRS, to be the salesperson I was, I like you, and your video's plus I talk to everyone always have. 2010 KLR 705 from M-Tech in Or. Awesome shop, awesome pricing, and DYNO'd now it ain't no KTM, 1090 but it's a whole lot better then it was I can honestly (w 16 tooth counter sprocket) wait for 3600 RPM and twist it like all now and get the "pig" up on a nice high wheelie that I can turn into a balance wheelie, and grab 2nd keep it going as long as I dare...reminder that's not with aid of clutch..

I'm still breaking her in...What's your thoughts on factory recommended break in procedure vs the hard break in?A video reply would be cool and much appreciated!

@@Brownbrady The bike engine breaks in on the deceleration phase so lots of sudden gas-off after acceleration. Up and down the RPMs, slow on the up part, bike is broken in 50 miles then oil change. This is the Motorman way; did it on a KLR 650 and later a Kawy mechanic said it had the most power ever and no oil usage.
