    Good job! I work at Circle Audi in Long Beach Ca. I just bought the 2017 and am selling my 2016. Best thing about the Allroad is that they are super exclusive and stand out among the herd. Not to mention how sweet they handle and drive!
    One more thing, the volume control placement is so that the passenger has easy access. You know when your wife turns down your favorite song to yell at you?!

    I've had my Allroad for a month now and, in all this time, I didn't realize it had the pull-up divider between the rear seats and the cargo area. Thanks to you, I know about it now! Very informative review, especially for families with children. The Allroad's an awesome car - lots of performance and utility.

    I'm glad to finaly find some good canadian CZcams reviews. I've been driving a 2017 A4 sedan Progessiv + Sport Seats Pkg for more than one year. In reponse to your review:
    - So, yes the perforated seat our pain in the... But it's the price to pay to enjoy vent seat. Note: This system can be very noisy.
    - Backup camera quality is fine with me. Biggest problem is to keep the ''eye'' clean in Winter.
    - Important to mention a fabulous option = the active roll control is also a TOUCH PAD !!! So, if you can't be understood by the voice recognition sytem (challenging sometime..), you can still write down your words letter-by-letter by drawing the letter right on the roll! We love this option!
    - I have the real Quattro on mine and it's amazing how fuel efficient this car can be on the highway. I was not expecting a DSG transmission to be so cheap on gaz! Shiftings are perflectly managed on cruise control) In Summer, on highway, I'm always below 8liters\100km for an average speed of110kph - 120kph. In city during Winter I can badly go up to 11 to 12 liters / 100km but that's the price to pay to have fun on all turns and curves!
    - Handling is not as good as BMW and Subaru due to the lack of feedback from steering.
    - If you've never driven an Audi or VW cars you will, like I did, have to get use to the gas pedal... I hate it but I can now deal with it without being mentally affected:-).
    Have fun and drive safe!

    I must say, I have watched a very wide variety of car reviews from several different channels and none of them are more informational and useful than this one. To the point, and gives the viewer exactly what they would want if they were testing the car themselves. Excellent job please keep these coming.

    I watch A LOT of car reviews and somehow have never found your channel. I have been waiting for a good North American based allroad review and I THINK you're one of the first with one out. None of the other "big" review channels have done one yet. The wife and I are strongly considering one and backseat space for a rear facing child seat was the only real question left and your video answered it. Great review overall. You got a new subscriber. I plan to watch other reviews on your channel.

    The Volume knob is placed closer to the passenger because the passenger is the one using it, the driver has all the controls on his steering wheel. And regarding to the MMI, yep, its not the simplest one, but you get used to it really fast

    Nice review man. I've had 5 BMW's namely, the 2 e36 M3's, 323ci, Bmw x5 4.4i and now 335i. I'm not heavily leaning towards an allroad. I drove the avant (not allreaod) and was disappointed by the power. But I haven't yet touched an allroad. We shall see. Great vid.

    A late thank you for this video.
    I watched this video in 2019 and it is one of the reasons I suggested my parents (in their early 60s) to buy this car for themselves. With only two of them living together, this car has brought them so many joys on their retirement road trips. I must say one line in your verdict part of this video, "many buyers for this car is in their 50s and 60s" was one of the triggers for their decision. Haha.
    Thanks!

    I think the volume button is where it was for easy of moving it side to side to change tracks/channels, which is kind of an awkward movement. The current allroad has similar positioning whereas the Q7 does not. I find it awkward to change tracks/channels on the Q7 the way it is positioned as opposed to the allroad where it is easy to change.

    Awesome review!!!
    I have the A4 and I love it. But I’m considering the allroad to handle our terrible streets in Edmonton better and hopefully smoother, this is something I like to know. I like the vertical grill on the Allroad better, it looks really cool. Once I got used to the controls, they are very good and their positions have become very natural. I love the nontouch screen, I hate finger prints, I think Audi is making a mistake in going to the touch screens in 2020. Anyways that’s my two cents, lol
    Cheers Andy.

    Great review. Appreciate the perspective and think you really helped get to the point of the pros and cons for the vehicle. The snow test was very telling as it clearly had no issue getting out of that mushy snow. Sadly, here in the Northeast US (NH specifically) the chance of getting an Allroad is slim to none. My local dealer has blown through their allotment and its 4-5 months to get one. Since there are none available its not even possible to test drive so can't even get a feel before buying. With that said your review did help prove that it is a great family car. Sadly need to find something thats available sooner than 4-5months out. I wish North America had a non e-tron A3 sportsback for 2017 but we don't. More luxury wagons being available would be nice. Thanks again for the concise review.

    14:28 onwards. There are four buttons, it can't take long to learn them. And they are mechanical buttons, so after you learn them you don't have to look at them at all as you can feel them. And about the volume button, I don't know but for me it is perfectly placed. At first it felt like it was weirdly placed, but after you use it when your right arm is resting on hand rest, then you realize that it is very well placed.

    My wife, two kids (complete with two booster seats) and myself went down to Glenmore Audi today and took it our for a test drive. I think we drove the exact car you tested in the video! Wife and I loved it. That 2.0L punches way above its weight and is really fun to drive. I loved being in a car again! In fact it had me dreaming about my old Subaru STi hatchback, except about a million times more refined. We are currently in a 2012 Q7 and we are looking for something a little smaller, a little better on fuel, doesn't have an expired warranty and is a little lighter on the monthly payments :). I think this is absolutely perfect other than two things. 1 - My wife is so used to the height of SUVs that she finds sitting so low a bit intimidating while driving and this did have her concerned. 2 - You can't get your hands on one of these!. You are looking at over 6 months for a build and unless you get lucky and the dealer can trade stock to get one somewhere, which we were told was somewhere between slim and none. By the time Glenmore can get an allocation and have it built we'll be into the 2018 model.
    My wife then sat in the Q5. The seating position had her sold right away. The 2018 Q5's will be here in May and the new model has all the tech and goodies of the 2017 Allroad. In fact I believe it will be very similar to drive except for the height (and the fact we will be one of million of them on the road unlike the more unique Allroad) This may be the path we end up taking as these will be more deadly available. What are your thoughts on the new Q5 build being in Mexico? Love your channel by the way and love the BC skiing clips mixed in. I am familiar with many of those spots!

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety

      I'm sure it was the same car! Glad you liked it. Of course, the big downfall to the Allroad vs the Q7 will be towing, if that's a concern for you. But the Q5 (previous generation anyway) can tow a really impressive 4400 lbs. So it's a great choice. In fact, I expect the Q5 will be our next car, too. Glad you're liking the channel and thanks for writing!

    Very good review. Thoughtful and accurate. I have this car in the Technik/Prestige trim. Its a great drive. I like the drive much better than the Volvos. IMO more interior storage is needed, the glovebox is small. I don't find the volume knob position to be a problem, easy to find without looking, you can also adjust volume and change tracks using the steering wheel controls. Highway fuel economy is quite good, I get 31-35 mpg depending on speed and conditions. So much low end torque, the engine is only making around 1750 RPM at 75 mph! Its quiet at highway speed, I can actually listen to classical music.

I have to say that this review was just great 👍👍👍 it was informative, mostly interesting facts combined with opinions when needed, the reviewer was interested in making a good video (it showed), different approach to this "review"-thing and that goes to the whole setup from recording to the outfit of the reviewer!! Volume is there near the passenger since depending on if you have teenagers, they typically take over music control. Also due to the driver having their own track select/volume on the steering wheel, Much better than if the volume/track select buttons were on the dash, so the passenger doesn't have to keep reaching over to use them and distract you.

  • @peterstone6307

    Hi Paul, one more thing. As for the infotainment volume control knob on the center console, I think thats more for the passenger and not the driver. I use the steering wheel buttons and scroll wheels to cycle through the cars infotainment system and dash menus.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety +1

      That's an interesting thought, Michael. Yes, there's always the steering wheel controls. Aesthetically, I find it a little weird to have that knob sitting in no man's land, though.

      Not my first Audi, so I am used to the volume knob position and love it. It falls readily to hand once you are accustomed.
      As for the MMI interface I think this is Audi's best, it omits the large touchpad found in the Q5 & Q7, allows better placement of the cupholders, and is much better from a safety standpoint than a touch screen. That word "intuitive" is overused... spend five minutes learning the controls and they are great!

    Mr. Paul , which would you recommend a VW allrack or audi allroad. ?? I must convince my wife on one of these or i am stuck buying a awd honda pilot . which i am trying to avoid. We do go offroad light offroad ( camping etc ) but would like a sport more feeling behind the steering, and the pilot does not provide that. Im seeing more offroad commercials for the VW alltrack than i see for the audi allroad. PLease advise your tips when possible as you have driven both with family.

      Hi Guillermo. The other comments below are correct, you'll be forking out a lot more for an Allroad vs an Alltrack. But you'll also get far better fit and finish, a sportier car and a bigger vehicle, too. If you can afford to get into an Allroad and you like wagons, it is a gorgeous car.

    Excellent review, but 2 issues. One a question and another a correction. Regarding the backup camera, it is as sharp as a tack, yours just needed to be wiped down. I had no idea or never read that low temperatures make the Quattro Ultra engage in switching power around to the rear wheels like the traditional Quattro; I thought (and still think) it is totally based on road conditions - rain, snow loose gravel, mud, etc, and nothing to do with temperature.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety

      Hi Bob, thanks for watching. In respect to your issues, this back-up camera (even when clean) isn't nearly as high def as many of the other offerings out there. It also has a bit of a fish eye effect that makes it less helpful for points of reference. And in terms of Quattro Ultra's temperature specific AWD system, this is what I've been told by the sales manager at Glenmore Audi (one of the top level dealers in Canada) and he's been through the full training session on the new Allroad.

    • @bobm9927
      @bobm9927 Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the quick reply. Never noticed the fisheye thing, but if other cars have higher reslotion cameras they must be incredible. Good to know about the Quattro being temperature specific, that's good to know, but at what temperature does it become activated? But it is for sure activated also by road conditions.

  • @cy9nvs

    Quattro Ultra is NOT the haldex system found in lower models (like the a3 and TT) it is a completely new system first appearing in the a4 allroad. The a3 and TT us VW's in demand haldex system since both cars are based in the golf.

      Don Motz , the Q7 is super nice and great on people and cargo space. The allroad is like it's sportier little sister. it's definitely a tighter fit all around, but it's like a well-tailored glove. And while the allroad is expensive, you get a whole lot of nice tech and features for that money. The Q7 be price is already just so high and by the time you add ALL the features, you're nearing the next tier luxury pricing.

    Hi Paul, i disagree with your comment on placement of the volume knob. (I own 2014 Allroad same color as on your test) Actually, it is placed perfectly, when you have your elbow on center arm rest, your fingers are right on volume knob. Also i have to say it is precarious position for the passenger, because from my own experience, passenger has to be super vigilant not to knock it off as they get in with bag or backpack. My wife almost broke it on few occasions with her backpack.

The 3.0 tdi, 272hp and permanent quattro was available in EU in 2016. That is the best choice for Audi A4 Allroud.

    The Quattro ultra doesn't just test temperature, it will detect front wheel spin also.
    I think what most purists are worried about are the driving dynamics, since it is essentially a FWD car most of the time

    • @Gandonus
      @Gandonus Před 7 lety

      unlike systems like Haldex that could be found on VW, the AWD on ULTRA can stay turned on for as long as you need it or the car thinks you need it. So, basically it wont just turn on when the car feels some front wheel spin, but will turn on when it suspects that there mignt be need for AWD, and therefore the 4WD will be on before there is any slippage and that sounds cool, even though the complexity of these systems is not worth some 0.5l/100km of fuel economy in my opinion

    • @BananaChipzzz
      @BananaChipzzz Před 6 lety +3

    Audi driver for a decade now. Looking for a newer Audi ... but I would never buy an Audi with ultra quattro.
    That is the point of buing an Audi ... the quattro. Permanent, torque sensitive quattro
    that does not need to waste seconds to figure out you're in trouble, but it's there right before the first slip.

      Andras Libal does this A4 use the haldex “Quattro” system like a VW?

    • @andraslibal
      @andraslibal Před 5 lety +1

      @@Vegas_Des as far as I know it is not even a haldex, it's a 2 wheel drive that electronically is switched to 4 wheel drive if slippage is detected. All in the name of some fuel economy figures.

    • @Vegas_Des
      @Vegas_Des Před 5 lety

      Andras Libal i see! How does that differ from the haldex system? Thanks !

    • @andraslibal
      @andraslibal Před 5 lety +1

      @@Vegas_Des the haldex has viscous coupling which means that some shear thickening liquid needs to thicken to make the differential couple. The uberquattro (or ultra quattro) uses electrical sensors to detect slippage and then pushes the coupling together electrically. This means a longer lag time between slippage occurring and effective torque being delivered (in both of these cases). The torsen (torque sensing system) was a marvelous mechanic al mechanism of cogs permanently in contact that immediately delivered the torque, that made Audi really special. They gave this up for a meager fuel economy gain. (0.3l/100km)
