The Mystery Of The Riddler's Pink Costume

- Why did the Riddler have a pink costume? The answer may surprise you. This infamous Batman villain had a slow start when it came to cementing himself as a core Batman Rogue. His journey was aided by the 66 Batman series starring, Adam West and Burt Ward, with Frank Gorshin as the Riddler. That show not only caused an increase in the character's popularity, but saw some changes to his costume. Is that why it was briefly pink? The answer lies in the early DC Comics animation era. We take a trip to the past to examine this brief blip of a costume here on Casually Comics!

Love your channel, but I believe there is another plausible reason for the pink Riddler! The New Adventures of Batman was produced by Filmation, and the primary animation director there--Hal Sutherland--was partially colorblind. This resulted in LOTS of unexpected pink in the shows he worked on, as he confused other colors with pink. This happened--for example--on Star Trek: The Animated Series, where things from the live action show would end up being presented as pink (e.g., the Tribbles). If you look at the other shots from The New Adventures of Batman, you'll see they have a lot of pink in them, including things--like speedboats--that you'd expect to be grey (Sutherland couldn't distinguish pink and grey). I thus propose that it may have been Hal Sutherland's colorblindness that gave us the pink Riddler!
P.S. Need Legion of Super-Heroes playlist!
I like it! If that were the case, I would be swayed towards lazy for leaving him in the opening credits.
I’m colorblind as well. I was initially confused by the title of the video since the costume in the thumbnail didn’t look pink to me. I think attributing the color change to either laziness or malice is a stretch. I was unaware that Hal Sutherland was colorblind or what his temperament was… but assuming he was colorblind, it’s possible that the people around him thought he’d be upset to be corrected about the incorrect color.
I will definitely agree with above commenter about your channel. It’s the best comic related channel on CZcams. It’s rare that I don’t click on a video to watch.
This was the reason I always heard. They talk about it some in the bonus features when Star Trek: TAS was first released on DVD. It's why the Klingons have purple uniforms in that show.
I'm also colourblind. As a result the outfit looks dark grey to me. Intrigued by the gloves though. We saw the yellow glove gang in that Bat Mite video recently. Is Riddler a member?
Trivia fact: Frank Gorshin was the only actor from the Batman '66 TV series to get an Emmy Nomination for the show.
It was well deserved. The Riddler theme music, that laugh and his jumping around send shivers up and down my spine when I was a kid back then.
Who else is surprised an entire video about Riddler's flamboyant pink ensemble and not a single frame of Jim Carrey rocking the all white and green sequined jumpsuit?
There’s been enough said about that suit, she is defeated.
Apparently, pink and green are chromatic opposites. I remember reading some news article about a decade ago that said pink isn't a color like all the others, but it's actually like "negative green," as in it appears when whatever pigment blocks all the light wavelengths that normally reflect green. So in a weird way, the pink costume is actually a good choice for Riddler since it's an inversion of his usual green.
The primary colours of light for additive purposes (for human perception) are red light, green light, and blue light. Put those three colours of light together in a variety of intensities and you get the perception of all the colours that can be displayed on a TV screen (equal mixing of RGB is perceived as white, equal RG is perceived as yellow, equal GB is perceived as cyan, and equal RB is perceived as magenta - often called the "secondary" colours) For subtractive purposes, inks absorb or block different parts of the spectrum, and thus the "primary colours" for subtractive colour mixing are yellow ink (absorbs the blue region of the spectrum), cyan ink (absorbs the red region of the spectrum), and magenta ink (absorbs the green region of the spectrum). Thus, green is in some way opposite to magenta. Strictly speaking, "pink" is an "unsaturated red" or a "tint" of red - red light plus some extra white light - "pale red". However "pale magenta" might easily be called "pink". If you want to print a region of green on a page, you do this by mixing (or overprinting) cyan ink and yellow ink to block the red wavelengths of light and the blue wavelengths of light, respectively, leaving the green wavelengths of light to be seen. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtractive_color and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Additive_color
Red is the complementary color of green, not pink. Which is why red roses stand out so much with the green stems. Check out the color wheel.
@@Phaeton667the colors used in printing, work differently from the one you are using. For printing, magenta is opposite of green.
@peterbonucci9661 he is talking about light not cmyk printing.
I like that the suit they gave Riddler has a bowler/derby hat: Stylish, but more practical than you might think, since early bowlers were reinforced for better durability (Lord Coke, the guy who ordered the first of them for his gamekeepers, is said to have tested one by throwing it to the floor and stamping on it quite hard, then being pleased that it kept its shape), making them pretty much nice-looking safety helmets.
Plus top hats stopped being fashionable when new transport (such as subway trains) showed how easier they could be knocked down or squashed over a wearer's face - imagine how embarrassing it would be if something like that happened to the Riddler and thwarted his escape from the Caped Crusader.
Frank Gordhin IS the live-action Riddler for me. I love how he could go from over the top wacky to downright menacing in 0 seconds flat.
He was completely unhinged.
And my favorite look for him is this dapper suit and bowler hat.
I'll never forget the thrill of seeing Kid Flash's costume for the first time. The yellow! The hair! (I was a child.) I had never seen such a costume change before, at least not a permanent one. I didn't know such a thing was even possible.
4:55 I knew it had to involve Filmation, it's the same reason the Star Trek had pink costumes. One of the art directors had interesting tastes in color and was possibly color blind.
Irv Kaplan colored things pink. Hal Sutherland was the one who was colorblind.
I would enjoy your take on Gorshin's take on Riddler during the 70's live action Legend of the Super Heroes. I feel like he used the opportunity to show his acting chops.
Really expected that show to be mentioned especially since It falls in roughly the same time frame
Was Catwoman's costume ever orange? It looks that way in the bottom right corner of the same screen capture as the pink Riddler costume 🤔
It was in that show. Really had more of a Cheetah feel to it than any Catwoman costume.
@@JAbell1966yeaa
They Completely Changed Her Costume on that Show for Some Reason.
I watched the New Adventures of Batman as a kid and was equally confused by the pink Riddler!
And he never appeared in an Episode.
'66 Riddler is just the BEST villain in the show, and the real nemesis of that Batman if you ask me.
I always loved Gorshen's Green Suit & Tie look for The Riddler. It showed that he was slightly Different than the other Rogues(Save Joker, who always banged his own drum). Enigma always considered himself a "Gentleman Crook", a Man of Sofistication & Class that, yes he is a Criminal, but would NEVER harm Bystanders(if the Police or Batman THINKS he will, that's not on him...).
And I'm STILL contemplating getting a custom made to fit (I'm built funny) three piece cosplay/screen accurate suit!
@@allanbard6048 despite the Question mark's all over it, it IS a good looking Suit....
...and could always be adapted to a Doctor cosplay
@@garyasselstine9186 oh so easily! Just remove all but 2 of the Question mark's and change the Hat and BAM! Instant (I WANNA say Fourth here, but can't remember off top of my head)Doctor....
There may have been a homage to this in BTAS, as there is an episode where Ridder traps Commissioner Gordon in a VR machine, and EVERYTHING, including the Riddler, is a shade of red. This could also just be a coincidence.
“Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt” featured Frank Gorshin in an entirely different super villain outfit ! 😂
Which villain's costume would you colour swap?
I was thinking once how funny it is that in DC the most used color is green while in Marvel is blue.
What if Harley Quinn was into the Riddler? I once did a drawing of that costume. Harley's classic look with a green and purple motif.

I also did a Catwoman concept drawing of Calico. A Tim Burton inspired cat suit made up of black, tan and white leather.
Doctor Doom with golden armour and pink cloth.
Has Wolverine ever worn red?
Green Lantern with any other colour and just like “yeah, I’m still green, but I can change my clothes like a person”.
I'm bored to death of gimmicks like Tony Stark Doom, white suited Darth Vader or Nemesis, so I wouldn't even go there. No opinion if the heel turn plays into it in my personal psychology, though.
@@robt.v.8688 Now THIS is actualy interesting, because Harely is conceived as a derivative character, so the source of that swapped to The Riddler is actually an idea. More so that Austin Powers/Dr. Evil "we're not so different, you and I".
And I like The Riddler's jumpsuit AND suit. I think it works to establish his pathological riddling, like he's compulsive to somehow leave the sensible appearance and become Pink Guy. So in that way the suit is transformed to this Hugo Strange, Vandal Savage APPEARANCE of civility and we have those both sides in one character, man and beast. We got SO MANY surface level Jekyll and Hyde archetypes like The Hulk, but The Riddler is up there as a REALLY sophiticated one.
Also because I want a cosnistent theme, and Batman theme just IS psychology or nothing.
I remember watching the 60's Batman show as a kid (yes- I'm old 😁) and really thought that the fitted suit made The Riddler stand out from most other Batman villains aside from Two Face, who is usually depicted wearing a suit (and yes, I know Harvey never made it to the TV show- more's the pity).
Kudos for casually cosplaying green Catwoman to balance pink Riddler.
Frank Gorshen will always be my favorite Riddler, he just rocked the character like no one else ever will!
I remember watching that Batman show and intro from when I was a kid. I really wanted an episode of that show with the Riddler, but never got it!
My favorite Frank Gorshin\Adam West piece of trivia is that Gorshin and West were once thrown out of an orgie (it was the 60's!) because they did the orgie "in character"! Holy keeping to a bit, Batman!
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Your powers of observation ( never even noticed the pink costume) , research, & ability to make something mundane , extremely interesting is Awesome…Keep Up The Outstanding Work Sasha 🖖🏾
7:00 I observe that this scene would have gone over well with them just listening to radio, but they went out of their way to depict the newscaster.
I love that you're tackling the more obscure cartoon elements from various superheroes shows and their relations to the original comic books: I am a huge fan of kaiju / giant monsters and your listing of lesser known DC Comics' beasties in the Bat-Mite episode was greatly appreciated!
Frank Gorshin may have been busy doing an episode of Star Trek.
Seems he likes being in tights.😂
I didn’t know we had Frank himself to thank for that gorgeous tailored suit. Thank you, Frank. And thank you for the info!
And At One Series The makers Had Larry Storch As The Joker Also.
(Pink Panther theme intensifies)
Thanks, Sasha! You always give us what we didn't know we needed to know, lol! I love all the behind-the-scenes trivia you dig up. :)
I remember reading or seeing an interview with Frank when he said casting agents who remembered him from Batman and as Beale from Cheron in Star Trek, assumed he was a proffessionally trained dancer because they remembered him in those tights in both shows. That, and his kinetic athleticism in those roles, made people think he was trained in ballet and Jazz dancing. He would get offered roles that required it which he'd have to turn down because he was, in fact, NOT a dancer. This is what I think I remember.
Love the look in this one!!
I watched this show as a kid. The impression I got was that they were just changing designs around to be distinctive. It's the same with Bat-Mite having green skin or Catwoman having a gold costume.
You have to keep in mind that at that time Batman was still just a relatively small, niche franchise. It wasn't anything like it is today - with multiple major movies, several notable series, and a world wide phenomenon. Back then, you could completely screw around with it and nobody really cared.
Young people may not know this, but in the seventies, a man wearing pink was...indicative of something.
I like my Riddler green thank you very much. lol. Gorshin’s suit was rather nice tho. Somehow it reduced the camp…..a little.
2:05
The suit looked so much better than his typical 60's outfit.
The rights story that I heard was that Superfriends was doing very well for Hanna-Barbera and Filmation realized their rights hadn't completely expired. So they were able to do New Adventures Of Batman for one season. Olan Soule and Casey Kasem reprised Batman and Robin for Superfriends so Filmation got Adam West and Burt Ward. In the last two seasons Soule moved over to Martin Stein, one half of Firestorm, and Adam West came in as Batman, though I don't know why. He was actually good in the more dramatic take that we got in those seasons, especially the Super Powers Team rebrand, where they actually got to use Joker and Penguin in two separate episodes. (Yes, I'm still trying to get Sasha to review "The Fear".)
Oh my god, i love your look in this video! And I love this weird show. Thanks for reviewing all the odd stuff that brings me so much joy.
Maybe "pink costume with yellow gloves" is what Eddie wears in his downtime at home with Clock King. Eddie does the dishes, Tockman puts away. (Also, did you know that Riddler and Clock King are an item in the comics attached to the Harley Quinn animated series? Could we get some videos on these tie in comics or the show?)
Legends of the Superheroes, 1979 Frank Goran wore a cheap update of his old Riddler leotard. Then he had a total costume change, disguising himself in a three-piece gray suit, analyzing Shazam on the psychiatrist couch. 😂
I admit I always wondered about this one. You ask and answers the real questions.
As a kid, i veiwed the new adventures of batman as a fourth season of the 66 show.
Adam West and Burt Ward did do the Voices of their Characters.
Two points about the Batman 1966 Riddler: First, Frank Gorshin is the ONLY actor on that series to receive an Emmy nomination. And Second, Although Gorshin did don both the classic tights & the classier suit & tie, he did not ever carry a cane. The walking stick with the question mark motif was actually first used by John Astin's Riddler, & never by Gorshin, even when he returned for his final third season episode. The comic books eventually included the cane as part of the suit & tie costume, but that's not how it was introduced. As for the pink version of the Riddler in the cartoon credits, the first time I saw this, I just shrugged it off as a lazy coloring mistake, ha ha.
Great video! Very informative. Keep up the awesome content ❤ 🙂
I'd love to see you talk about the downright strange Avengers member Star Fox (not the Nintendo one). He was the brother of Thanos and has like Spanish Fly powers towards women, which I do believe caused a lot of issues in his personal life. He's just such a strange character, would love to see you give us a deep dive on him!
…and now played by Harry Styles, because why not.
I had a thought after GotGv1 of casting Jack “Prince Joffrey” Gleeson as a slimy Eurotrash Starfox who would be Quill’s dad.
The new adventures of Batman is such an oddity. At least I don't feel like I'm going to get a seizure from the intro like the previous show.
As a big Riddler stan, i've always wondered about the pink Riddler. I'm glad you took a look at this strange corner of Riddler lore. I would love to see you do a video on the era when he became a private investigator. It was my favorite Riddler era and I wish they had kept on with it instead of turning him back into a villain. I think he made a great detective rival to Batman.
I'm just like you with costume designs and even civvies when a character would just rock normal clothes, like when the X-Men do it, or She-Hulk in her Sensational run is just her in variety of outfits, shredded outfits, or wearing a form of censored bars lol
Maybe Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott were big fans of The Floyd and it was an homage to the oft-asked "Which one's Pink?"
Thank you for this video. I love the New Adventures of Batman series. I was 5 years old in 1977 and this cartoon was my very first exposure to most of the Batman characters. I had actually forgotten about the pink Riddler when watching this series on Saturday mornings. It wasn't until I began my search for this series on rare video, and eventually the official DVD release that I discovered the pink Riddler. I always thought that it was what I called the Bat Embargo as to why the Riddler was not in any of the episodes. Hanna Barbera must have gotten the license to the character after Filmation put together the intro, but before he could be in the episodes. I myself can only imagine that if the Riddler had been in the episodes, that the late voice actor Lennie Weinrib would have done his voice like he did with most of the others, While this show gets very little love (largely because of BatMite), The New Adventures of Batman is my personal favorite animated Batman series since that's where I got my start with my lifelong love of Batman and Robin and most of the classic characters. Thanks again!! 😀
I met frank gorshin in in Vegas in the 80s. Very nice and I was impressed
Well,he was good at impressions.
I like how he's one of the few characters whose hair color changes from artists to artists. He's been depicted with every natural hair color except blonde.
Great video, Sasha...👍
Whose idea was it to invite the Riddler onto the Legion of Doom? Just what every criminal enterprise needs: a guy who will deliberately give the heroes clues on how to track them down.
Sasha, great video as always.
That being said, what happened to The Legion of Superheroes video? The one that you´d talk about the comics...and BDSM costumes...
Also, a suggestion: a review on the Future Quest comics.
Well, that’s easy. It was a mistake overseas with the coloring departments.
I would get so excited every time a version of Batman and Robin to come on but this filmation version they did a pretty good job
Thanks to your poll I looked up and learned John Glover voiced the riddler - that’s awesome thank you
I've been a big Frank Gorshin, Riddler fan since seeing him on TV in the 60s.
Honorable mention to the interview with a vampire parody Frank Gorshin did with Adam West (West as the Vampire, Gorshin as the reporter) at the MTV Movie Awards (1995). It was Brilliant!
My favorite Riddler costumes will always be the green ("traditional"), but suit or spandex… I like both.
As always, thank you so very much for the videos.
I got to see a Gorshin stand-up performance. My parents somehow snagged tickets and we went with one of my friends. It was so funny I forgot I stubbed my toe just before leaving the house. :D
This was interesting. Thanks.
Maybe pink Riddler is the version who is out and proud.
Booo Boooooo
Wait, when was Gomez Addams the Riddler? Stop putting all my childhood memories into a blender!
@Casually Comics. Tasha I always enjoy your comments regarding Comics. As for Batman's enemy The Riddler, I always preferred his green costume, whether it was the green jumpsuit with the purple belt and purple mask, or the green suit with the purple or black derby he wore on the TV Show.
Well I didn’t expect to see Gomez Addams in a green leotard
Yeah, the iconic suit and bowler hat look will always be the true look of The Riddler in my book.
Robin:If I remember corectly, the Riddler's said: 'I've reinvented myself. I'm a whole new Riddler, and my next theft is is of those who are two blind to see the diffrence' But I still don't understand the Pink Suit.
Batman:"But you see Robin, the pink suit IS the Riddler's riddle."
Robin:"Holy Pallet-Swap! You're right Batman!"
Batman:"And what is too "Blind" to see the difference between Pink & Green?"
Robin: "Dogs!"
Batman:"Right Robin! His next target is the Gotham City Dog Show! Quickly, to the Batmobile!!!"
I've been hyperfixating on the riddler for a couple weeks now and I find it a funny coincidence cuz while I had no clue about the pink costume, a villain I designed based on him happens to have a pink & green costume lmao. I'm glad to hear about why he wears the suit though, it just looks so nice on him🥰
I always loved how pissed off the Grey Hulk would get when he had to wear tattered purple pants. Notably the Wolverine issue with Joe Fixit visiting Patch in Madripoor.
Green bespoke suit Riddler FTW 😊
Thank you, but there is another one you can do a video on, namely the Yellow Catwoman costume also shown in the video clip with the Pink Riddler.
It also helps that Hal Sutherland, who directed almost everything Filmation did, was color blind and thought that many common colors were actually pink. Look at the Star Trek animated series and the Brady Kids and Archie cartoons for examples.
This is why Riddler can't hangout with Azrael
THE QUIZ-LER! Now I can't get that out of my mind!
My favourite costume moment is your new wig, it's the best one yet
i actually prefer the classy suit and bowler hat for the riddler.
Great video , please spot line more villains
The Riddler’s time in the Yellow Glove Gang was brief but memorable.
Jim Carrey‘s bedazzled white outfit with all of the question marks was very interesting. His mask was also interesting as it was comprised of two question marks joined together at the end to form the bridge of the nose.
my special interest is the riddler and I've always wondered about the pink costume. this was a joy to watch tysm
He did some experimenting in college but it wasn't really his thing.
To be fair I’m pretty sure that suit was actually red before it went in the wash
And now he also has drawers full of pink t-shirts and socks.
What a perfect timing cause Riddler has always been my favorite Batman villain, even as a kid! Also green is my favorite color so it's kinda clear, like how Mysterio is my favorite Spider-man villain or Loki's my favorite Asgardian. Its really interesting to see that the suit change up as been a staple since the 60s adaptation which honestly was a good choice, it fits Ed. Honestly the other theory I had was they didn't have enough green cell paint or that it wouldn't have stood out against the BG color he was. Also Catwoman was orange in that opening. wonderful work anyways!
This video is about the pink Riddler, but all I saw is the Joker's stunning lipstick application.
Frank's Riddler is and will always be ironic. As a kid I liked Riddler's look so much that I use to always draw and play as a heroic form of him (which is why the South American Hal Jordan Super Powers figure was awesome to learn about). It was so frustrating back then that Joker and Penguin kept getting toy figures but poor Nigma didn't get even one.
Nobody seems to have mentioned how buff Pink Riddler is!
Is it Pink? Or is it more Fuscia? IDK... but see the image from the intro definitely brought back memories of seeing re-runs from my childhood
This is wonderfully fun stuff and so nicely researched and presented. I wish the host would speak a little slower though as there is a lot to contemplate in a short time and calling it like a horse race is unnecessary. Otherwise, I’m definitely subscribing! Thanks and keep the videos coming! 😊
The suit looks so much better.
This costume is his best one Just like Yellow daredevil We meed new comic stories with these outfits
There is a big question mark over the Riddler's pink costume.
Thanks for another great episode.
I could see a twisted mix of the Riddler with Zsasz that carved question marks all over their body instead of a costume.
I’m just having trouble accepting the Catwoman model in that New Adventures intro.
Y'know, I saw the pink Riddler McFarlane figure just the other day while I was out running some errands and wondered what the hell was going on with that. Thanks for the explanation!
I agree with the “Hal Sutherland colorblindness”. theory. It also explains the pink Tribbles in Star Trek The Animated Series.
4:13: "I don't remember *my* Riddler being that stretchy..."
This is pretty fitting, since the 66 series has a *green* suited Joker in *its* animated intro.
It's not just the Riddler it's also Catwoman who doesn't look or wear a costume like anything from the comics. She has light brown hair and is wearing a yellowish orange costume with a large cat head crest.
Never forget... When discussing Filmation, "Cheap" is ALWAYS a viable theory.
I love your channel ❤️ so much fun! I will say though that I miss your other channel shippers guide to the galaxy. Not a lot of channels talk about ship cannon or not
Green hair, for the Riddler or Saint Patrick's day.
I was kind of hoping that for the bit where you speculate on what names could be used by the "pink Riddler," you would cut to a clip from Batman Forever where Edward Nygma is trying to name himself. "Question Mark Man!"
He washed his reds and whites together!
