  • i needed to sharpen a milling cutter bit, tried doing it freehand, and while it worked, it didnt work as well as I wanted. a little bit of youtube searching and found harold hall and his jig and rest setup. I made one a little bit simpler and it works pretty well for what I need. caltoncultery.com

That is really clever! I wouldn't have any idea how to sharpen an end mill. This is really simple, and yet leaves all the cutters even. Thanks.

Now I have a new project to build. I honestly have not even done any research on sharpening end mills. I just started buying carbide end mills to get a longer life from them. I have plenty of HSS end mills that if sharpened have lots of life in them. Thanks, Joe!

I use a square collet block for indexing. Then use an appropriately sized collet to hold different size end mills.

That works really well for getting the bottom of the cutter. I would be sure to dress the wheel in between cutters. For surface finish, what you can do is take a stone and put a flat bevel, just on the cutting face and then follow the bevel from the inside of the flute. All we do at work is whip out a diamond paddle and touch up the edge. Works well with HSS drills, too. It also helps to give it enough clearance behind the edge, otherwise you get a ton of rubbing that will dull the cutter and leave a poor finish.

Most of the time you would mill with the 2mm on the end of the milling cutter so only 2mm or so gets really blunt, then all it takes is to rough grind 2mmm off of the end and use this device to get an accurate cutting edge again, no need to do a full helix grind.......I use a T& C grinder but this device will give you a good end mill once more..

Be careful with the carbite dust, it is bad for your lungs. At least use a dust extractor and dust mask.
