- The largest Viking ship sailing in modern times, Draken Harald Hårfagre, sailed into New York City harbor September 17 2016. She left Haugesund, Norway, April 26 2016 and sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean to America just like the Vikings did a thousand years ago. Isn't she beautiful?

a ship like this sailing up a river in its day would have been truly terrifying.
Depends on which river and who's there waiting!
David Harrison maybe, i mean they were primarily traders so maybe it was a good thing to see this.
@@ChickenChunks Still must have been anxiety inducing not knowing whether they are traders or raiders
Bjarni Steinar yeah
Especially if it had that state of the art computer system on it back then.
I wonder if anybody on the river saw the longship and had to look twice, to make sure they weren't crazy.
Something like this happened to me a few years ago. I was standing on the parking lot of my small hometown in southern germany. Then i heard a roar from above. When i looked up, it was a real ME-262. First i didn't believe my eyes nor ears, but then i remembered: Some engineers, i think from Boeing had rebuild two of them. And one of these was on its way to the Berlin airshow for a display.
Sadly i got not the time to take some fotos of it.
You are right. But what would happen, if a New Yorker claims, he saw and heard the Hindenburg taking a round trip over Manhatten. I think, he'll ask himself, if it's time to go to the madhouse. Well I really think, he would contact the NY newspapers about this and get rich (or poor and to the madhouse).
About me and the ME-262: If I hadn't known, that two (I think?) of the Me-262 were rebuild and there was a flightshow in Berlin, I wold have declared my eyes faking or me getting mad....
Edit: Dreckfuhler
It's NYC dude you see stranger shit on the subway.

The contrast between the modern steel and glass skyline, and the thousand year old sailing ship...amazing. It's like it got sucked through a time warp.
Until the turn on the thousand year old diesel :)
There was one shot where a modern sailing yacht was crossing their stern, only half their length. Very beautiful.
It has a motor and GPS close to the real deal LOL
The Draken also had a ferry bearing down on it and since it takes a crew of 100 to man the oars and only 30-34 present. The diesels were started to prevent collision.
@@clutchpedalreturnsprg7710 They were started because its a bit harder to sail in a port with this old technology
Imagine a comedy adventure movie about a fleet of viking ships who sailed to raid britain but gets caught in a unnatural storm and a month later they spot land. It's New York City, but a thousand years into the future (present day)

Team Gab Well, we have just had Vinland. That was some great stuff.
In 2018, I and my son saw this ship sail in to Maine around Rockland. When the ship came in, so did the fog. We waited 5 hours to see this ship, hoping it wasn't going to rain to hard. Never rained but the fog got thicker. Finally, with sail down, we saw the ship quietly appear from the mist. It was just like a movie! It docked along side of us. I helped tie it off. We took some pictures then headed home. I held on to the starboard side rail with my son. I was so proud of this ship they built. My ancestors... their ancestors must have been proud of them as I was!

How could anyone dislike this. This is so epic and beast. Their sailing journey is one hell of an adventure.
Mostly because they don't appreciate the value of preserving someones heritage and culture.
They dislike it just to trigger people with dislike-fetish. You know, the ones that think no one is entitled to think differently then them selves as they have the true answer always. Or what we now call Karens.

I have always had an appreciation for the Vikings because of their all conquering spirit and physical abilities on the battlefield. What a great effort by the crew and all those behind the scenes to build this beautiful viking ship and then sail it to New York. Well done. Great effort and very inspirational. Your Viking Ancestors will be smiling down on you all and that wonderful ship from the heavens. Great to see your culture is also being kept alive by the great traditional boat building skills you have too. Cant imagine a ship more beautiful than this. Just amazing. Windsurfing is one of my hobbies, and i would love to be in the crew of this ship. Especially when some of my great ancestors were norwegians, who may even sailed with same kind of ships. My dad once said that one of them was known as some kind of "pirate" could that mean he was viking?
Such a powerful view.
Amazing, beautiful ship. Great job, descendants of the Vikings!
I remember actually seeing this ship in Rhode Island, at least if my memory serves me right. It was so beautiful to see and odd to look at since I was at a whaling museum at the time and happened to see it there.
Edit:
From what I was told as well, they claimed that they wanted to sail across the Atlantic like the Vikings did to prove them traversing their way from Norway all the way to Iceland then Greenland and finally to Newfoundland.
Remarkable craftsmanship & such a Iconic & beautiful ship.History should remember & give more credit to these warriors of the sea.More so than Christopher Columbus.
Why? Columbus paved the way for the modern Americas (both north and south) with the European colonization that followed afterwards. The current geopolitic, culture, religion, and demographics of the two continents, for ill or good, is all a result of his discovery of the New World. He had more influence in history than the Vikings who reached Newfoundland and seemingly disappeared from history.
This gives me goosebumps.
This project is so amazing. Just fantastic, guys.

I am 67,. At 13, I built a viking ship of just 15 inches from balsa planking for a history project. I was fascinated with Viking history. I did win the top history ribbon. I would love to have spent a day aboard, I am too old for much more. Thanks for presenting all the videos on the build and the sailing. I am an artist by nature and carved a magnificent dragon head for it and painted as fierce as I could. I had a row of round shields down each side and ores at each position. I had spent 3 months building. I wish I still had the photos but family feuds, divorce, have robbed me of all of my early artworks. Facebook page at Delmus R Ingle: Artist. I downed 350 ml of Jack Danials Tennessee Fire Liqueur while watching and wishing it were Viking Mead.

The "Odin's Raven", a 2/3 scale longship, sailed into New York harbor from L'ans Aux Meadows back in the 1980's. It was on display at the South Street Seaport for a couple of weeks before returning to its starting point in Europe
Excellent Ship. But I think it was missing the rows of Shields on each gunnel. They would just add to the authenticity IMO.
Vikings never sailed with a row of shields. Shields were used during battle, never when sailing. That is a myth that look good on paintings.
@@sallhame Wait, the bayuex tapestry was a lie...
@Andreas Duess Oh wait, I misread that. Nevermind, but uh.. I thought you said they didn't mount shields on the side of their ships which I wonder how they did that?
@@credinzel6996 I'm afraid sallhame had it (mostly) right, they did sail with shields, but usually in troop transport function, where they were going into battle. Your reference to the Bayeaux Tapestry was misunderstood. William was the King of Normany (an originally Norse tribe settlement) and their shipbuilding history is one with the Norse tradition. Hence the portrayal of Norse, and in this instance, viking (which was a Norse term for raiders), ships; and the showing of shields on the troop transports. Remember, we're talking about 1066 here. In any passive transport or trading voyage, shields were never shown on the gunwales. Hope this helps.

They came from Norway to Iceland, then Greenland and finally to North America a thousand years ago, and named it Vineland, for the wild grapes they found growing there. The named the natives they encountered and traded with Skraelings. An old Norse word for people who wear animal skins, unlike the Vikings who wore woolen clothes with leather and skin outer layers when needed.

As dominating as the Vikings were at their historical era, they were not invincible. Like they often lost to Scottish people, nd the English - sorry: Anglo-Saxons, won them just before the Normans won these same Anglo-Saxons.
