      Johnny wanted it to be spontaneous but Hope insisted it be rehearsed, or at the least scripted.
      I'm guessing Johnny's line about did you ever work with a pig before was an adlib, it took Bob a second to get the comeback going but it landed well.
      I went back and paused at 8:14 right after Johnny said it, Johnny's smirk and Hope's daggers says it all.

One of them is I GET WEAK and the other, if I'm not mistaken, is HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH. I hope you will want to please all of us who love her. Thank you in advance on behalf of myself and Belinda Carlisle fans. 🍺🍺 from Steve.

    What’s the most funny is the dynamic going here. Bob is desperately trying to be fantastic and the harder he tries the worse he does and Johnny tees him up to steer him back and Bob is thankful and resentful and frustrated and tries even harder. Bob knows hes outclassed in this setting and hates it

    For the people saying that Johnny Carson hated Bob Hope with a passion - and you could be right - but look at 13:15 when Johnny pats the back of Bob's hand. A man does not pat the back of another man's hand without their being some kind of fondness involved. Just an observation.

      I don't buy it that he hated Bob Hope at all. He might not have liked the alleged scripting of Hope in Hope's later years. I don't think this exchange, in 1977, was scripted at all. It seems pretty natural to me.

      It's hilarious that you think making appearances on someone's shows denotes friendship rather than show business. Johnny hated having Bob on his show because Hope was a practiced entertainer rather than a spontaneous one, and he had a lot of clout with the network that allowed him to come on the show whenever he wanted - because it was good for the ratings. And Johnny made guest appearances on Bob's shows because that was also good for the network and it was expected of him. Business, not actual friendship.

      I don't believe any of that garbage claim about Hope and Carson. When people make claims Hope couldn't ad lib, I KNOW they are full of it. Hope had a long reputation for being a top notch ad libber. Red Skelton was that way, so was Groucho Marx. Maybe in his later years, he had to be scripted, but it is clear this exchange was NOT scripted.

    • @ValleyoftheRogue
      @ValleyoftheRogue Před 4 měsíci

      @@Stretch1003 You weren't there. You are believing bios that were written long after these two men have died. Unlike you, I am old enough to remember Hope's reputation as a top notch ad-libber years before this exchange. Hope started in burlesque, and you HAD to be sharp to be able to survive that era. They were not "practiced entertainers" with scripts. Good grief, you guys really don't know what you are talking about.

    Bob Hope I believe still holds the record for one of the longest contracts in show business history.
    He had over half a century of appearances entertaining the troops, dating back to WW2. When I was younger, Bob Hope was still making public appearances even well into the 1990’s.
    One of a select few in Hollywood to have lived to age 100. As far as I know, he never really retired. He was a tireless performer who was properly given the nickname ‘Rapid Robert’.
    As others pointed out, Bob had a bit of an egotistical personality, as many comedians do. Here he interrupts Johnny Carson as he was trying to get some words out.

      The line about falling asleep to Carson's monologues clearly hurt him, you can see it in his face when he turns. Hope wasn't an insult comic. Rickles could have said it, and it would have been funny and clearly in fun. From Hope it was mean spirited.

  • @ValleyoftheRogue
    @ValleyoftheRogue Před 4 měsíci +1

    I seriously doubt Hope was scripted here. Carson seemed to genuinely like Hope's comments. For those who don't know, Hope was a master ad libber in his time. Perhaps in his later years he had to have his jokes scripted, but that wasn't true for most of his long career.
