Like Rickles said, "Learn to laugh at ourselves". As someone that got picked on quite a bit in school, I learned this independent of Mr. Rickles' or Mr. Chappelle, two inspirational comedians/actors that helped me confirm what I thought I knew. If you learn to laugh at yourself, and make jokes about your own "quirks", it not only takes away the "fun" from the potential jerk/bully, but it helps them (that really are normally insecure themselves, not some afterschool special nonsense, based on actual experiences) open up/relax, as well as others. As people become more acquainted/comfortable, then the jokes about others come into play, but all in the sense of fun/sharing our own "issues", just in a bass-ackwards sort of way.

I’m with you on the nostalgic sentiment 110%.
Regarding your comments about, “everyone getting the joke; no political talk; no bashing of political figures” however, I once thought the same as you said
But the more I’ve watched these vintage-era Carson and
Letterman archives as an adult, I’ve come to the conclusion that both shows-especially Letterman-had plenty of “cringe”, “confrontational, and “political bashing” comedy.
The difference is that a considerable portion of the performers were lifelong professionals capable of utilizing a seemingly effortless and masterfully deft genius, they could hide their more ‘edgy’-for lack of a better term-comedy underneath an unstoppable, lightning-fast stampeding barrage of ‘mass-appeal’ comedy that made me laugh so much and so loud, all their ‘edgy’ stuff went clear over my head as a kid.
But it’s definitely there-especially on Letterman-and you can find it
You just have to avoid asphyxiating
from laughing at the oceanic volume of “surface level” jokes on the way down
      🥳

He was too freaking old and should've listened to his writers instead of overruling them. Letterman did the same thing at the end. Steve Colbert would do well to avoid political humor and just concentrate on humor like he did on the Dana Carvey show
