I remember watching this with my dad when I was a jr in high school. I looked over, and he had a big smile on his face. He asked me if I knew who that guy was. I said "sure, that's Don Rickles". He told me that they were friends in NYC when he was in his twenties, and used to get into some mischief together. I asked "like what?" He just started laughing and wouldn't tell me.
I remember watching a biography show about Johnny Carson, and one of his staff said that they put together a "run sheet" for Carson for each episode. It would be about 3-4 pages long and it would list some background information and topics about the guests on the show. The staff member said that, when Don Rickles was a guest, all they had to do was write was one word: "Rickles".
Lol that's probably cuz he would instantly remember the ones they loved to show. Don was something else. Probably one of the best things he ever did for the show was introduce Don for the first time. I'm sure when he was on, the viewership was _packed._

What he was doing at times was meaningless "...underneath he's wearing jeans and a dead cowboy suit!" There's something about saying dead that makes it great. Its an adjective for him that makes anything sound horrible in terms of roasting lol.

Okay, I've only watched up until Johnny introduces Don. I have to say, Johnny was asking for a roasting here. With that intro plus wearing that getup, he was begging for it! Okay, now I'll watch the mayhem ensue haha.
The outfit was part of a thing that had been building for weeks. Carson was in the habit of using a falsetto voice and sang “Like a Rhinestone Cowboy” when one of his jokes bombed. Somehow they came up with the idea to have him sing the entire song in that voice. In this episode, rather than his usual opening monologue, Carson sang “Rhinestone Cowboy” with Doc and the orchestra backing him up.
I am very surprised to see Johnny dressed that way and the way Don made everyone including Robert laugh was just so typical and I also loved how Johnny and Don stuck it to each other like they always did.
@@RayNDeere I think Johnny made a slight reference to that and I loved Don's reaction too. I didn't know Johnny was a singer too. I never hear him sing before. But as you said maybe he did the whole thing to settle a bet.

And you could tell that he was trying to relax and show appreciation of the jokes so he sort of reached out and grabbed Rickles Shoulder. Rickles grabbed a hold of that and started running with it, mercilessly lampooning Blakes behavior who you could tell was feeling a little akward but wanted to be seen as relaxed and cool. But Rickles just has an instinct for improvising jokes at everybody elses expense and he was just relentless to the point that Blake was laughing at Rickles sort of lightheartedly making fun of his gestures. Wow you have to have a tough skin to be involved in that conversation between Rickles and Carson. They go at each other like two Tomcats, and anybody that gets in the way is gonna catch a claw. But it was fun to watch, and it was great to see Blake. I remembered the face, but I couldn't remember the name until I heard it, and then when they started talking about the Cocatoo I was sure of who it was. This sketch/bit is side splitting hilarious every 10 seconds. I watched Carson as a kid but don't think I laughed as much as my grandfather did back then. Making up for lost time now. Just thinking: I can't name one single 2022 late night talk show hosts and/or guests that are this funny. Oh do we miss "the Johnny Carson" Show.
I remember watching this with my Dad in his Art Studio. Working on a GMC Truck add. We laughed so hard. I fell on the floor 😂. Dad's face turnd red.Great Memories.
Don Rickles really was such a funny man. He was also very caring and loved people. He always fake insulted people, even Jewish people of course which he is Jewish. He made fun of everyone, but that was just it, in FUN. Today I'm not sure if it would work with everyone seemingly so touchy anymore. . I miss him so much
It could, but make it clear the laughs are with them, not at them. If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Certain people are way too uptight or have too high an opinion of themselves and need to be knocked down a peg.

You never know what you've got until its gone.
Each time is funnier than the last when viewing this. It is both hysterically and brutally funny. Lol. Thanks so much for sharing. HILARIOUS!
Don Rickles was a comedic genius. Hilarious 😂. Rip legend.
I've never seen this one--great stuff.
This guy was the man , nobody will ever top him!
I remember watching this with my Dad in his Art Studio. Working on a GMC Truck add. We laughed so hard. I fell on the floor 😂. Dad's face turnd red.Great Memories.
It’s amazing that every single person I’ve seen on these shows has such charisma and personality. The total opposite to today.
Oh Gawd, Rickles really loves to go Crusin' for a Brusin'.
12:23 Ed's laugh was infectious. LOL.
Thanks for sharing. This is a terrific segment.
Great episode. Thanks for posting. The best late night show with Johnny.
These two, bounced it back and forth better than any others.
