The job interview skit with the two of them on Saturday Night Live was great
Legendary
Best comedy skit ever on SNL
You can see that Johnny loved Richard’s comedy, delivery and quick wit…they played off each other very well!
And you can see that he didn't care for Chase, it's visible.
@@93JubileeOh, the feeling was mutual, for sure!

Johnny and Richard were good friends, did coke together
I didn’t find much wit to Pryor
Johnny was the king of late night T.V. I miss his shows so dearly. There will never be another time like this.
Not just Johnny--there were a lot of great, interesting and funny guests to bring out every day.
He's untouchable
The best!!
I remember being young and having a basic understanding of what the writers strike was in about maybe ‘84 and apparently Johnny continued his show doing all of the monologue writing himself. I remember thinking how brilliant his comedy was.
Today, they don’t want gifted, critically thinking leaders of their craft. If they didn’t create you and can’t control you, they don’t want you.
Real comedy comes from being real. Speaking truth. Thats what makes Richard great.
Um... he's dead. So "made" is more apropos.
@@michaelelliott3209 *"Um... he's dead. So "made" is more apropos."*
Truth is universal. If something can be remembered by a human being (and intelligence), it persists indefinitely.

Aired 46 years ago this week, crazy how time goes by
I was negative one
Still funnier than anything today
Anniversary coming up
When Prior crosses his legs back and forth at the start and Carson says "Are you braiding those" is a quality line 😂😂
Dangerous with that flame so close to Mr Pryor.
He's super flammable.
That verbal jab by Richard Pryor to Chevy was just fantastic, "I was going to ask you, why didn’t you tell Johnny you was going to take over his show?". In 1975 the New York Magazine carried an infamous article that stated “Industry sources report that network executives see in Chase ‘the first real potential successor to Johnny Carson when he gives up the Tonight Show,‘” while also noting how Saturday Night Live was bringing in 2 million more viewers than Tonight Show reruns that previously held the spot. So that quip by Richard Pryor in the moment referencing the magazine article about a year and a half after Chevy had left Saturday Night Live and was in the process of failing to live up to the hype really hit home.
If you SAY SO...
Chase was great on his talk show, and all his movies prove you completely wrong.
@@nonenoneonenonenone Thank you for your timely sarcasm.
@@sirissac234 That's interesting didn't know that. On the surface it just appears that Pryor is irritated ( If not straight up sick of)Chase trying to keep focus on himself. It was a rather uncomfortable watching this.
It's in reference to when Chevy Chase was interviewed on the show earlier and did a bit where he trips over a chair that was in the middle of the stage. He's implying that Chevy was hogging the show with his act... czcams.com/video/XcUnjWIbccg/video.html
Richard was a comedic stream of consciousness… one of a kind.
one of a king?? far from it. He was your typical black comic who spewed vulgar language and always brought up the black white thing. all black comics do it. there was nothing unique or original about him. Redd Foxx did it too.
A stream of cocaine consciousness.

Your point is understandable. But it's spurious.

I don't think Richard was joking when he said "I don''t like Chevy".
False. Chevy and Richard did a Word Association Skit on SNL together, they got used to playing off one another.
Pryor was edgy from the moment this video began but not every joke slayed the audience .... this time. Pryor was a VERY FUNNY Man. I'm White and I remember him well.
Seems so, when Chevy tried to give him a low five, Pryor dissed him by completely ignoring it.

Yup, the best. I also really like Bill Burr a lot. Way back in the day, I adored Bill Cosby, Red Skelton, Tim Conway, and Carol Burnett.

In '97 I was in 7th grade, and I remember watching Richard Pryor's stand up comedy on HBO. It was hilarious, and unlike anything I'd ever seen. I also used some of his jokes during stand-up skit for my 7th grade talent show. Needless to say, the jokes flew over my classmates heads, and they didn't laugh, also the teachers weren't impressed. Lol, good ol days
You still watch stand up comedy?

It was probably your delivery of the punchlines.
@@davidfelix2594 Ok, I thought that too, and it may have been. But, after I read my last Richard Pryor joke, everyone was like "That's it?" And I said, yup. So yeah, it was either my delivery, or they just didn't get it.
Richard Pryor was the best man. I really miss that cat.
Don’t get too emotional, damn
Richard Pryor is one of those rare people way ahead of his time. He sounds like he could be perfectly comfortable in today's world and his humor is still spot on. Yeah, they would try to cancel him, but I think he could have prevailed. I miss him and so glad so much is still available to us.
Why would "they" try and cancel him? For what kind of reason? Also, who is "they"?
@FerenswayRecordsactually being funny for one.. another more direct one would just be him saying the word midget in an interview or for man spreading in his chair or some other bullshit

Rest Peacefully, Mr. Richard Pryor ❤
Richard was an absolute genius.
Every crowd loved him.
His albums went gold.
He was a huge part of my youth and i love him.
Im a white Republican male.
❤
As another old white Republican male, he was one of my favorite comedians of all time. Not because of race or gender or any of the ridiculousness people seem to hold as important these days but because he was smart. He always knew what kind of comedy to do with a certain crowd, how to do it, when to do it and how far he could go with it. By far one of the best all around comedians of our time.
I hear you…back when we were just Americans!!! Before they really started to divide us!!!
I truly wish that today’s young people could experience the USA that we all grew up in, we were so close to having a real utopia, but we quit fighting the fight because we had this false sense of accomplishment and victory…why we didn’t see the tsunami they were building to hit us with I’ll never know…but please know that there was a time when we were all striving to have a wonderful all encompassing country and way of life ❤
I’m sorry we weren’t able to keep the tradition alive of handing over a country that was better than how we found it…😢
(BTW, 50 yr old white republican here to)
Richard Pryor great comedian, actor. He can laugh at himself.
Pryor was in Blue Collar, a very underrated film, in my opinion. His performance was excellent.
Comedians can be dramatic; dramatic actors usually aren't funny.
Pryor almost stole the show in that one. He was a great actor.
Someone needs to be convicted for calling the Tonight Show by that name now. Johnny owned it and always will!!

Richard Prior wasn't kidding when he said he didn't like Chevy. Most of Chevy's peers, Richard Prior, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murry just to name a few disliked Chevy immensely. Chevy was arrogant sarcastic and full of himself as well as overrated his own moderate comedic and acting talent.
When Chevy came back to host SNL he and Bill Murray got into a fist fight mere seconds before they went live. And no one was happy with Chevy. In the closing sequence where the cast come out in front of the crowd, Bill is in the back with a red hoodie on just pacing and staying away, almost like as soon as the cameras switched off, he was going to pound him.
