I'm sure the flood-damaged Tesla prices are high as intact body panels are still super valuable for crash repairs. I know several of my friends with minor Tesla fender benders waited 6+ months for basic parts like fenders to be available. You might be able to make back all your money in body panels alone.

A Tesla one has 18650 cells.
A pretty common item. If you were very motivated, you could disassemble the entire pack and replace all the cells. Assuming the electronics would let you.
Though I imagine Tesla would probably sell you one.
But you might be right the days of the 50 year old classic car may be ending soon.

An isolation fault usually means a short from the high voltage battery pack to ground - there will be a ground fault monitoring device connected to chassis ground and also shadowing the battery pack. If it detects HV on the chassis it will open an isolation contactor, disconnecting the high voltage battery

    • @Stoney3K
      @Stoney3K Před rokem +3

And moisture ingress from flooding is a VERY common failure mode for isolation faults. If the packaging holding the battery cells becomes damp, the resistance between the HV connections and the car body gets lower.
Disassemble the pack, dry it out, and re-test the isolation with something like a Megger. Having HV leakage to the body can be dangerous.

Please Chris be very careful with the high voltage isolation fault car. I design battery management systems (where that fault is coming from) for a living and that fault means that the high voltage and low voltage systems are not properly isolated from each other and you could get shocked with high voltage simply by touching the chassis and the low voltage components.

@V A I'm sure it won't be necessary. I'm not pretending I could have designed the car better. Maybe they just didn't have protection from submersion (floods) as a design goal. Now my question is, is there a short caused by a bridge from damage or from water still being there? Supposedly there's stuff that could be sprayed on to exposed electrical components so water can't do any such thing.

Chris, I have 2 KTM motorcycles and what I have learned dealing with them is that some vehicles are worth more as parts than they are as a whole. It is not hard to find used KTM parts but it is hard to find good used KTM motorcycles. Teslas may well be the same way. As you go through these cars you might want to check on what prices parts are bringing as it may well be worth parting these cars, keeping what you need and selling off the parts online. Just something to consider.
Since you are looking to harvest parts you already know all about the inverters to use to put these motors in other cars. Think about installing the boards in the inverters to bypass tesla and take direct control of the motors in the cars. Then you have a Tesla they have no control over. That doesn't make anything else work but it would get the car running and would be cool to see.

On newer versions of the software you have access to service mode for more diag. Settings, software, hold down on the model s or 3 logo for a few secs and after you let go type “service” into the text box.

I’m right there with you. I just bought a 32K mile 6R80 transmission online and it came out of a Florida flood vehicle (2014 Lincoln Navigator) for my 2012 expedition. We’ll see how dumb I am when I get it and install it in my truck! Lol. Gambling on the fact all the electronic components are in the throttle body and are usually submerged in transmission fluid. Water line on the vehicle was a few inches below the bottom of the windows. 🤷🏻‍♂️

First step to a flooded electric car
Take all electronics apart, dry and check for permanent damage. I really hope you didn't smoke any electronics. I'm also excited to see what you do with them. Good luck and have fun!

With these watch RIch's videos, with salt water you got yourself into a bit of a pickle as it EATS electricals FAST. The best approach in my eyes is that first of all KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING around the HV system so it doesnt get you, and then take out control modules, dissasmble, dry them and see the condition, maybe swap them around and see whats what.

These things are closer to appliances than to traditional cars. Tinkering with an engine is one thing, but electronics is a whole different game. Mad respect for being willing to mess with them.

How to Connect Jumper Cables to Your Car:
Attach the red jumper cables first. Start by clamping one red cable to the positive side of the battery that won't start. Then attach the other red clamp to the positive side of the working battery. Next, clamp one black cable to the negative side of the working battery.

All in on watching you do an electric conversion. I also don’t see you at any loss as far as the purchases you made. Piece the hell out of them and you’ll probably get back more than you spent and get to keep what you want.

If CZcams has taught me anything, it's that buying Bentleys is a terrible idea, buying a flooded car is a worse idea, and buying a flooded Bentley is the worst idea of all. I suspect that a flooded EV is right there with it. But after eating my words watching the evolution of an absurd idea like the mid-engine 67/70 Mustang out of a fake Bugatti...BIFB will probably manage to pull off some sort of Frankenbuild Tesla. And it will turn out cool as hell.
