A mutual aid company in my area had a 1965 mid mount truck. You could hear the motor coming over the siren. Such a cool look to the old LaFrance. Imo they're how fire trucks should look.

I'm the owner of a 1958 American La France Series 900 Firetruck here in San Antonio Texas, mine was built the first year the Series 900 even came out under American La France.Mine from 1958-1984 served at the Alamo Heights Fire Department in Northeastern San Antonio Texas. And it was owned by the Fire Department up until full Retirement in 2001.It also was donated and owned by the TTM in San Antonio Texas from 2001-2017.They left mine sitting for sixteen years after a wreck happened in it while in a parade which costed them insurance. After that,it was too much money to keep running and to even find professionals to work on it.So it sat for 16 years outside and was only moved once.I purchased it last year in November for $700 after I talked them down from $1,200.
Mine sits at 434,220 Miles and 30,374 Hours on the meter. It has a R883 Continental Straight Six Gasser with 175 HP and 780 Torque at 2,305 RPM's.The engine like any Firetruck has Dual Ignition,Starters,Points,Spark Plugs, and Carburetors. They're all in Doubles in Twin Pairs, the Carbs it has are 1BBRL Downdraft Carburetors.I also got soo familar with mine on it's Ignition since it doesn't require keys that I knew how to crank 2 1/2 Ton and bigger Military Trucks without even reading the instructions. My ALF also has a Five Speed Forward/Direct and Vaccum Assisted Hydraulic Brakes,it even still has it's original 1958 Cooper tires which still move and all the lights to.The lights that it has are all built by MARS.
The Sandy Hooks Fire Department out in Bear County of Texas wanted to use mine as a Volunteer Firetruck for their use,but I declined because they would Modify and Rebuild the entire pumper out of it's original state and condition. So I donated a 1969 M35A2 I use to own to them for them to use as a Brush Truck.I also was a Volunteer Firefighter for a short time and drove Military Vehicles that our Fire Department had with very familar and similar Ignitions.

American LaFrance started offering diesel power in the mid 60's as an option. It wasn't until the 1000 series came out in the early 70's that diesel power became standard. In 1965 when this engine was manufactured some fire departments still wanted gas powered apparatus and were not quite sold on diesel power yet.

laryco These trucks from the factory have Five Speed Transmissions as Forward/Directs,they do have a Clutch, and every Transmission with one can be Double-Clutched on some level. But you don't Double-Clutch with a truck like this while shifting unless you need to do a serious downshift or something while in Idle.
I own a 1947 Mack Type 85 Firetruck and a 1958 American La France Series 900 Firetruck, both of them have Forward/Direct Transmissions, the Mack has a Four Speed and the La France has a Five Speed.

A beautifully restored fire engine. The company LA FRANCE has built very nice fire engines. In the past there were also truck manufacturers in Switzerland. Unfortunately all these companies have closed. Greetings from Switzerland, George.

I am 14 year old and I live in Pleasant Hope, Missouri. Gender: Girl. I can't wait until I'm grown I am one of those "Right Now" people. I am just really jealous that kids can't ride in them as often as adults do. If you were to ride in the fire truck over here then that would take a lot of fuel. There needs to be more of these fire trucks in my state even though I have seen I do not know how many I saw in the Ozarks. I would enjoy me and my boyfriend getting in one together. My days have been so bad with my family members and wish to be the first kid in my school and grade to get in one of those. Sorry about my speech my speech whenever I am writing isn't very good. I have autism and ADHD. Missouri is just MISERY because they sound almost the same and people here are just driving me up the dang wall. This time I am on my mom's computer because I just wish I had more internet access at home and my mom and siblings are at my little brother's baseball practice and I here alone with my mom's strict and mean husband which I do NOT like and is asleep. I hope that he can't hear me type this loud keyboard because I am typing so fast because my family will be here soon. I need more freedom to ride in a fire truck that I like and more internet access whenever I am in it so I can play the funniest videos and the best songs so that I have a feeling that it's the 1980s again. My family only helps me and punishes me for the little things! I need help with a Fire Truck Squad for the future. I need more romantic time with my boyfriend especially in a fire truck that you have: the American LaFrance. I have loved fire trucks since I was 3 or 4 years old: this is what my mom said, so I have been loving fire trucks for years and I know some brands. I have got made in fun of because of getting my wrist sprung in PE. I hate some of my classmates because they give me a hard life and some of the teachers are giving way too much work. If anyone wants to help fire trucks in the future, they better help me right now if they want future people to ride in one of our fire trucks from the past like the American LaFrance fire truck that you have. I need absolutely more time to do whatever I want! Guess What: If I couldn't figure out what password was needed for this computer I wouldn't have been able to reply to you, I am pure genius
