People complained about Flash being cringey comic relief in the Joss cut but then Zack adds a prolonged slow-mo sequence of him plucking hotdogs out of the air and drooling over a woman he just met while she is mid car-crash and moments away from a violent death which adds absolutely nothing to the story.

Did Joss give Barry the personality of Wally West? Yes. Did the best adaption of the DCU ever made, the DCAU, also do that? Yes, to the point that later they retconned him to be Wally. He was supposed to be Barry in Superman TAS, but they just kept writing Wally. Why? Because Barry Allen doesn't have a personality. He is _boring_ beyond belief. Barry Allen has one fan: Geoff Johns. Imagine a Flash who isn't cringe. Congrats, you have a generic speedster, or Barry. Wally West is the only good Flash, but one of the higher ups is the only Barry Allen fan, so you have to slap Barry's name and rough life story down for Geoff to not start crying and vomiting and screaming, but the only way for him not to be the most boring thing ever is to inject Wally's "actually having a personality".

Plus fans of the Snyder Cut seem to forget that the WB was very close to firing Snyder over the dailies that were coming out from this movie. Everyone seems to have forgotten that before Zack had to step down they showed a version of his cut that was apparently "unwatchable". In their haste to catch up to Marvel they gave themselves no time to reflect on where the series was headed so they were stuck with Zack Snyder purely because they'd already told everyone these films were coming out and if they pushed them back Marvel would have an even bigger lead. They were pretty much unbeatable by then so I don't know why they didn't take a break and figure things out. It's their own fault this all happened. For a studio that's been around so long they've made some pretty major mistakes that a studio that's managed to survive so long shouldn't still be making. Get it together WB. Maybe after AT&T is gone things will change.

I'd be willing to bet that the "Snydercut" wasn't even a Snyders original finished idea, no, what he did was sit back, watch and listen to the fans and the critics tear apart Whedons version, and then do everything humanly possible to distance himself from said film by going so far as to say he had the "Snydercut" ready to go, just needed WB to greenlite it. He then called the actors for re-shoots, bs, and new scenes. He then takes the OG footage, combines it with the new, "re-hoot photos," and makes the Snydercut! THE Snydercut was not some ZS masterpiece ruined by Whedon and WB, no, the Snydercut was the result of ZS remaking the OG JL movie but with a cheat sheet of exactly what the fans liked, hated, and characters, small parts, but parts they would use to set up future movies and scenarios for films the fans wanted toy see made
Now, don't get me wrong, movie makers should ABSOLUTELY listen to the fans. Otherwise, u gonna lose those fans u got, BUT, the amount of praise ZS has allowed to be showered onto himself for having a cheat sheet, is such a narcissistic move.

I probably would have enjoyed the Snyder cut if Superman was restored to his true character in the movie, but he isn't. I do believe that Cyborg, Flash, Aquaman, Steppenwolf, Wonder Woman, and Batman are improved in the Snyder cut, but Superman is most definitely not improved. There is so much here I completely agree with. The Iris West scene was pointless. It was a "hey look, it's Iris" moment, that added nothing to either Iris or the Flash. Did she come back? Maybe she worked at Star Labs and that is why Flash enters the fight? Nope, nothing. Goodbye Iris, see you in Flashpoint, maybe. I loved that "Save one" moment between Batman and Flash as it not only showed character development with Flash but also with Batman, who was a shitty character in the last one. Batman mentoring another person, after going off the deep end when his former protégé was killed by the Joker, is an important moment for Batman. To add insult to injury, they replace it with a forgettable line from Batman that I'm not even sure Ben Affleck delivered. Superman actually was shown to give a shit about people in the theatrical cut, but doesn't have any humanizing qualities in the Snyder cut. And yes, I fully agree, CW's Superman and Lois has a much better Superman, because he actually cares about people and is trying to balance his work with his family. He feels like a cocky god in DCEU, he feels like a man in CW. I slightly disagree on Cyborg. Yes, he is used to provide exposition a lot, but there is character work that is great. However, it is unnecessary for this movie. Had there been a solo Cyborg movie where they fleshed out the character, that probably would have been enjoyable. I loved the Martha and Lois scene, it showed two people bonding over losing someone they both loved (though honestly, the chemistry between Amy Adams and Henry Cavill is almost non existent), then they completely ruin the moment with a completely unnecessary Martian Manhunter reveal.
On a final note, the whole "Best Batman/Joker interaction on screen" thing is bull. Bat in the Sun's fan movie Dying is Easy runs circles around Zack Snyder's attempt at a movie. Though

Growing up on George Reeves, Filmation Superman & Superboy, Super Friends and Silver Age plus Bronze Age DC comics, Chris Reeve had a lot to live up to heartwise when it came out. But it made me feel like I'd actually somehow looked through a window into the real Superman's world and actually seen him. So he raised the bar unbelievably high. Yet, I was still able to enjoy the live Superboys and Lois & Clark and even Routh's (though especially in Crisis). And Tim Daley's cartoon felt right at home along my childhood comics and Reeve. But Cavil's Superman just depressed me. That's quite a feat. And he kept letting me down with each appearance (though no judgements; he's an actor doing the role he was paid and directed to play). So, for the DCU to pull me in he's either got to be completely (classically) revamped or Micheal Keaton's Batman's return needs to be completely on point with his 1st two Batman movies. Here 's keeping my fingers crossed. As a DC fan, its no fun disliking modern DC things.

Setting aside the absurdities of its orc-like villains and ten foot tall primary antagonist, the movie glorifies a truly inhuman, monstrous group of people. The Spartans were in reality authoritarian, child-murdering, eugenicists and pedophiles, yet the movie paints them as tragic heroes. Meanwhile, the film paints the Persians as sub-human degenerates in a profoundly racist way, when in reality the Persian empire was objectively less bad than not only the Spartans, but the Greeks of that era in general. The movie takes the tale of Thermopylae, which was already an exaggerated piece of ancient propaganda, and further distorts the historical reality.

The direction these Superman movies went in was kinda bad. Here's another way they could have done it.
Movie 1: Last Son of Krypton. Keep Zod as your villain, have it be about Superman revealing himself to the world to stop Zod from conquering the Earth, and adjust to his new role as Earth's saviour even though he was not born here.
Movie 2: Man of Steel. Have Brainiac be your mastermind, while Metallo is his foot soldier. This will help cement Superman's place, showing him as a powerhouse that can be relied upon. Not just his physical stature, but his spirit and morality as well.
Movie 3: Man of Tomorrow. This is where Lex Luthor is your villain. Play into the idea that he's concerned for the future of humankind if it relies upon Superman too much. What if he turns on us? What if he dies one day? Leaves us helpless and unaware of how to take care of ourselves anymore. This is to challenge Superman's motivation, why he does what he does, and whether his role on Earth is good and just after all.
I feel that a trilogy set around that dynamic would be more intrinsically interesting - and each villain would also be a suitable match for the movie's title, each of which is a known nickname for Superman that we have seen for decades.
What do you guys think? I don't have more details than that, but it could have been a better direction than what we got.

ZS is a mediocre edgelord whose idea of movies is mindlessly bashing around action figures with no regard for narrative or character. Like you said, at the end of the day, between the two editions, I'd pick the theatrical cut. Neither of them are great, and that's because they were built on shaky foundations. There was never any universe where we could have gotten a decent movie out of it. No, if ZS had been kept on for the theatrical release, we would've just gotten an edited down version of the 4 hr cut, and it would've been as mediocre as Whedon's take. Maybe ZS would've argued for keeping it at least three hours long. Doesn't matter. All he had to add was padding and filler. People think it's shocking that the theatrical cut was edited down from over four hours of footage. They don't know that pretty much every movie could be way longer if you throw in all the crap that should be thrown away. The ZS version just adds back in all that garbage along with endless slow mo. How can you listen to a guy say that a Batman movie isn't dark because Batman wasn't r*ped in prison and think he's a good guy? How can you listen to a guy say his passion project is an Ayn Rand adaptation and think he's a good guy? At the very least, you have to admit there's something wrong in his head. The fundamental problem with the DCEU and especially the Snydercut, is that DC tried to leapfrog over 3 or 4 films to get to an “Avengers” type team-up film... before establishing Flash, Cyborg, and some of the main exposition points better served in their own films. We wouldn’t need half of the character moments (thin as they are) in the Snydercut if there were films building up these characters ahead of time (e.g. Cyborg should have had his own film, establishing both his character arc and providing dramatic moments to explain the Mother Boxes... not have that info-dumped onto the audience).
Then we add in all of Zach Snyder’s bullshit (overuse of slow-mo especially) and we get this mess. Great review, agreed 110%.
The best films DC has done recently bear little to no relation to a shared universe: Joker, the Suicide Squad, the Batman... better they do that than trying to leapfrog up to Marvel.
