The thing that struck me about Hoechlin is how he plays Clark and Superman; other Superman actors decide put more emphasis on Superman or Clark as the real identity, but Hoechlin is able to a character who can be believably both. He does it while also allowing us to see the "in between" persona that shows both Superman and his mild mannered Clark persona are parts of the same person.

Fully agree! It's quite refreshing and makes it all more believable.

Something I noticed 15 minutes into the first episode: the chemistry between Superman and Lois was really good. They felt right as a couple straight away. There is no chemistry between DCEU Superman and Lois. Tyler Hoechlin is probably the best version of Superman since Dean Cain, and the best version of Clark Kent since Tom Welling.

The chemistry is no surprise considering that they had already played the couple in the Arrowverse. Lois calling for Barry Allen to kick Oliver Queen's butt was pretty funny.

I love that one of your favorite moments was mine: The first time introduction. Not only is it because it's about as close of a remake of the classic cover as possible. But also the entire exchange with the kid where he says his mom made his costume. Seriously...that hit ALL the marks I want in a Superman. He comes off as kind, friendly, pretty dorky, and just thrilled to be able to spend just a little moment with the kid after his moment of heroship and derring-do. It reminded me of Christopher Reeve saving the cat. Or that moment in All Star Superman when he takes just a moment to comfort the girl who's about to jump to her death. Superman is not defined by his "Let's fight Steppenwolf and Darkseid Today!" antics. The best thing about Superman is that he can do all of that, but he's still capable of humanity and empathy and SHOWING it (which let's be honest, is something Batman could work on...I'm a big fan of the new Nightwing comics, I recommend #78-83 especially if you haven't read them yet). You want to know what makes everyone who's into comics, Marvel / Image / DC, love Superman? It's that, in every way, he's who we wish we could be.
Yes, he has all of those powers. But, he's also never petty, he has empathy and compassion for everyone, even someone as evil as Darkseid. He's more than willing to find something good in everyone. It's what we all wish we could be when that person causes a little bit of rage by not letting people merge in on the highway, or the person that stands in a doorway and refuses to let people pass. And I'm sorry...just the fact he's willing to let everyone around him know that he's can be just as cheesey and dorky makes this version that much more approachable. I can't wait for season 2...I just don't want to have to put up with Zod this time...how about we bring back Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor? He did a great job during the Arrowverse's Crisis event.

Yeah, that green car scene had a very different significance in the show. In the original comic, people were running in terror from the circus freak carrying a car around. In the show, Superman was bringing the car to a safe landing, and making sure people felt safe and protected.

I by and large agree with everything you said. Not having any emotional connection from my formative years to the Christopher Reeve Superman, that lands Tyler Hoechlin squarely in the top of my heap of live action Supermen incarnations. (The Superman of my formative years was the one voiced by Tim Daly in The Superman Animated Series, that's the one I think of when I think "Superman")

And honestly, adding the muscle suit underneath the costume was just...a bad idea. He looked GREAT in the Supergirl suit. No muscle suit, just the costume. They should've kept that. That's part of why his head looks so small sometimes.

The Superman costume does look really padded-out. I actually thought that it was supposed to be like that in-world because Superman doesn't actually need body-builder muscles, his strength coming from his Kryptonian heritage, and it gives him a different body shape from Clark Kent. May be giving the show too much credit but it works in my head anyway.

You're definitely *not* the only one who feels that way about this costume... especially about how it makes TH's head look small from certain angles. I thought that maybe I was imagining things. But hearing you vocalize your opinion makes me feel better about my observations.
I will say that this show makes me wish that Jimmy Olsen would make an appearance. I sadly fell out of the habit of watching Supergirl after the first few seasons. Nothing against the show. I enjoyed it. My schedule simply changed and choices about what entertainment I would have time to consume meant that I had to drop the Arrowverse. I have no idea what happened with Jimmy Olsen, so I do not know whether he would even be available for a guest appearance. I only know that I would be interested in seeing the twins, Lois, and Clark interacting with him.
I especially like that Sam Lane's relationship with Clark is less antagonistic than I have seen in most of my comic reading experience. I like the idea of him having a professional respect for Superman and a love for his family which is strained by duty. This is a more nuanced and interesting portrayal than one where Lane simply hates and distrusts Superman for being an uncontrollable alien. I heartily approve.
Thanks again for your great videos, Steve. You're definitely worth my monthly donation and I wish I could afford to send you more.

I definitely wish Jimmy Olsen was in the show but Supergirl did him dirty by making him become a superhero(for some reason that show felt like everyone needs superpowers?), I can't remember why he leaves but he left Supergirl before the show was over(it gets REALLY bad btw, CW stopped giving a shit). The actor left because he wanted to pursue a movie career(which hes been doing movies for a good minute), so I don't know that he would show up, which is fine because I don't really know why Jimmy Olsen would come to Smallville unless it was to visit Clark.

The way you talked about conservatives here really bothered me. I'm not a conservative, but my dad is and he is literally the best person I've ever known. He didn't vote for Trump because he believed Trump being in office would harm immigrants and he thinks everyone deserves to be here. He spends 20 hours a week at the battered women's shelter as a guide to help women get back on track. He donates 45% of everything he makes to various charities. He convinced his church to start allowing gay marriages because he wanted everyone to be welcome. He adopted my half brother and sister because he never wanted them to feel like they didn't have a father. Like I said, he's literally the best man I've ever known and he's a conservative.

The most disappointing parts of the show was Edge toward the end of the season and the constant breaks- especially the LAST TWO EPISODES. Edge would've been cooler if he was a alpha-asshole businessman. Seeing a way to use the Eradicator to sway events his way, then have it turn against him by the minds of other Kryptonians would've been cool. HBOMax padding out the episodes to fifteen instead of thirteen hurt it as well. Overall, I was impressed. The CW/HBOMax partnerships seems to work on this and Stargirl.

Lois' social consciousness is also partially a product of the time in which the show is made versus the movies. As a society, we are more socially conscious than the 70-80s, and she mirrors that.

  • @TomGallagherSuperboyBeyond

I much prefer his new suit over his supergirl suit, but honestly i would rather see a more classic suit. You should check out Gerard Christopher as Superboy, warner canceled it because they wanted to make lois and clark instead, but honestly seasons 3 and 4 of superboy involved Clark already having left college and is now working in the city for The Bureau for Extranormal Matters. Basically a budget DEO. It was just Superman but without permission to use the name. In terms of the stories they told, they were way more ambitious than Lois and Clark ever was, even having DC/Superman comics legend Mike Carlin adapt Alan Moore's For the Man Who Has Everything in one episode. (Nearly half the shows episodes were written by comic writers such as Denny O Neil, JM Dematteis, Andrew Helfer, etc. It was also the first live-action DC show to introduce the concept of a multiverse in an episode where Superboy gets transported to another universe where he was evil, and became communist dictator of the world. Very Red Son, except it came like a decade before. Seriously, give seasons 3 and 4 a go. But you can skip 1 and 2 for the moment. Much like TNG, the first season is almost unwatchable and season 2 while not much better was at least a slight improvement. Season 3 though, that magic season. Took the show from low budget TOS-style cheese to a legitimately fantastic take on the character. Oh and if you are a Bond fan, George Lazenby and Britt Ekland played Jor El and Lara. Don't know how else to sell it to you beyond, Bizarro was in a bunch of episodes and looked as comic accurate as you can get. Same with Michael J Pollard playing Mxyzptlk.

Coming in at a _very_ close second, on my _Cons_ list is the lack of even a mention of _any_ of the other *Earth Prime* superheroes, especially *Supergirl/Kara!*

My main issue with this and most modern Superman interpretations is the absence of contrast between Clark Kent and Superman characterizations. That contrast is a fundamental part of the Superman original fantasy, and IMO the character gets very boring very soon when that's forgotten. Which is kind of always...
I miss an interpretation in which he is depicted as both the bright Kryptonian demigod and the clumsy reporter with awkward social skills

I really love how the brothers obviously issues with each other and issues with their parent's decisions and other basic teenage stuff, but it never becomes toxic. A lot of the CW shows will spend like 2 to 3 episodes with characters being unwilling to talk to each other or giving each other dirty looks. That never happens in this show. At worst when things get heated it can make one of them a bit petty, but the moment shit is actually going down, all is forgotten.

I really like Brandon Routh's costume based on Kingdom Come, and his acting, it's a shame we probably won't get much more than what was shown in the crisis episodes.
Tyler Hoechlin is my favorite superman after this first season (Christopher Reeve is another level, he's the superman), and I really liked the kids, at first I thought they would be boring, and clichés, but in the end, they were very well written and the actors are very good. Another point that caught my attention a lot is Clark's relationship with Lana, they really like each other a lot, but their love evolved into something much more than just a romance, they understand each other (and I still think Lana knows he's superman) and their friendship is something really real, natural.
Morgan Edge was a great idea, a half-brother, with a similar origin, but different, a pity that in the end the script didn't help, I was still rooting for him to change.

    1. One thing I love wholeheartedly about S&L is how Superman is depicted as a global hero. Sure, he's largely associated with Metropolis but he responds to disasters and saves lives all over the world.
    2. I get a kick out of how the show uses Silver Age "Imaginary Story"-style elements as actual status quo: "Superman's Twin Sons! One is Super, the Other is Normal" or "Superman"s Evil (Half) Brother from Krypton".
    3. I love the Fleischer shorts, too and seeing Hoechlin in a Fleischer-inspired costume is fantastic but I'm glad its used as a "times past" kind of thing. I wouldn't want it to be the default suit. I very much prefer the insignia to depict the S and the shield's border as one piece as opposed to a red S within a yellow pentagon.

I second everything you said...except the costume stuff; that didn't bother me at all (it was likely the fallout from the Big Lawsuit that finally got resolved after 50 years, but that's another story). This show understands its two title characters in ways the DCEU movies absolutely do not. The result is refreshing and enjoyable, with lots of characters you end up caring about (even if, like with Kyle, you'd really rather not). My "con" side would include this show's version of Steel aka John Henry Irons; as a lower-budget Iron Man knockoff, he just didn't quite work for me. the 'drab' coloring of the suit might have been a post production addition ... maybe in filming they discovered that the suit detracted from certain scenery or reacted poorly against the green screen and so were forced to tone down the coloring to compensate?? (i dont actually know anything about how that stuff works in media ... i just remember hearing something about some companies having to tone down certain colors because of the way the camera or blue/breen screen reacted -- so if anyone out there can confirm or correct my speculation please do because i am genuinely curious)

I do like the costume design, the cape has a better "bell" movement when Superman walks, etc. However, yes, it could have a bit more color saturation in there... I would also add to the pros list the great cinematography and edition. The camera placements are fluid with the scenes and the editing techniques, inviting the audience into the story. I love to see Superman and Clark Kent as a one whole person, instead of two separate characters, and I believe Hoechlin does this very well. Also, I love the display of respect among the characters, specially in Kent's family. I'm very curious and hopeful for the second season.

This is the most balanced review of the show. Literally everything was hit on the nail. Lets all hope that season 2 is not only good but better. And fixes some of the problems voiced in this review and plot lines unresolved.

Steve I love your reviews. I especially enjoy your Star Trek actually series. It makes my morning drives to work fun. I do have one minor gripe though. You seem at times dead set on attacking conservatives and as a conservative I would simply like to say we are not all drinking the right wing kool-aid. I can agree with just about 80% of what most left leaning or traditional liberals believe in. Just wanted to let you know buddy we are not all crazy forever trumpets. Thank you for the awesome video enjoy your day

Overall I really enjoyed the show. Enjoyed Both actors for Superman and Lois. Could have done without the drama with Lana's husband. My two biggest problem are they always show mountains in smallville Kansas when there are no mountains in Kansas and that Morgan Edge or Clark knew about each other when literally being on the same planets. They both have super hearing. They could literally hear each other. I can see Clark not knowing about Edge bc he never revealed himself but Clark openly talked about himself to others (his parents, lois, lois dad, any arrow verse charcter, and his kids) about being superman and being from krypton. Edge is all shocked and surprised when he discovers he has a family.

Lois in the show is written really well. She feels like she has a purpose and goals other than being the wife of superman unlike iris west. When Lois has a lead with potential danger, it feels like she knows what she is doing

Hoechlin is probably my second favorite Superman, second only to George Reeves (I say "probably" because I could change my mind every five minutes). The show itself is my favorite of all Superman shows and movies. I think his Superman/ Clark has most of the best qualities of previous versions without the negative aspects. It also gives us something very new instead of a rehash of what we've seen over and over before. When will they fall in love? When will they get married? When will he amnesia kiss her, effectively hitting the restart and losing my interest completely just when things looked like they were going somewhere. [OOPS! Sorry! This is not a review of Superman II]. Instead, when it starts, they are already "married with children". What a great way to say, "This version will get on with it and give us something new". As for Elizabeth Tulloch, best Lois Lane ever. (Sorry, Margot. Love ya).. I think it';s that she has such incredible nuance in this version. I do agree about the Kryptonian part and about the costume. Man, put the Fleischer costume back on. The main costume he wears looks like he tossed in into the basement on the same table with grandpa's old tools. The tools rusted. The costume looks like he put it on while it was still covered with dust after the colors had been fading for years.

The only thing that made me accept this version of Morgan Edge is that it's essentially the closest we'll ever get to a live action adaptation of Super Criminal (from the story that prompted DC to create "Imaginary Stories" but forgo to classify IT as one for a while...).

Hi Steve, I really appreciate your videos, but I'm holding off subscribing for the moment (I already have 300 other channel subs!).
    I quite enjoyed S1 of L&S but haven't watched S2 yet.
Regarding your comment about Brandon Routh, I also really like his portrayal, but think one actor should have played Lois (if they were really going for doppelgangers like with Brandon)...
Have you ever seen the British version of the comedy 'Ghosts' series (the original)?
The lead actress Is uncannily similar to Margot Kidder, and like Margot, she has great comic timing.
If there was ever another alternate universe, I think she would be perfect to fill the role.

I think that their is a a reason of Jordans powers getting stronger but I think it is the Human side may be reacting to the XK the first place his powers fully manifest is in the barn by the ship and at the mines where the XK was. I also think John is not as powerless as they think how many freshman are as strong and durable as he is. He was able to stop Jordan's punch by intercepting it which is not a light feat being fast enough to do it. I think John is able to help him with the confidence and drive to do use his natural abilities. I think they both have some powers but John is a constant slow uses going at a dependable uses and Jordan can do burst of of feeling and effect like their personalities

  • @phillyvoodoo
    @phillyvoodoo Před 3 lety +1

I hate to say it but this show might have benefited from the freak of the week format more so for Jordan to get used to his powers by defeating an adversary with a different skill set...... Morgan Edge could have played as a quasi Luthor an manufactured these powered people in a more of a mad industrialist way looking to gain military contracts rather than another Kryptonian plot..... didn't they do the Kryptonian thing on Supergirl already????? And speaking of Supergirl, how come she or any other established heroes didn't show up when the threat was high..... that is the main problem with these potential world ending threats on these shows in a world populated with well established heroes....... That's my 2 cents.....

I'm glad you like the show! I watched for a while, but eventually it got too CW-ey for me (a bit too kitschy, a bit too contrived, a bit too on the nose). For example, you felt the flipping-of-the-script for the boys was handled well, I thought it was on the nose. Once they started to flip the script, all the rest of the choices were obvious. Not that that's a bad thing per se, I just wasn't engaged in it. And they kept pretending things would go one way, when it was so obvious they wouldn't given their adherence to *always* flip the script. Seemed like they would write situations, just so they could go "Oh look, we didn't do that!" Which I always find boring and off-putting. I did like the bad-to-good transition with Irons and the feud with Lois's father. The episode where Irons started to be good I think was the last I saw. So I can't say more than that. Maybe I'll finish, but low on the list.

This superman is actually superman, the cast is great especially Tyler and bitsie, people behind this show really care about the characters, my only concern is cw, the only show from cw that I personally actually enjoyed from start to finish was arrow, I did like arrow(especially the final season was great, I haven't seen supernatural and the 100 but I've heard good things about them too)but even arrow had so many ups and downs throughout its 8 seasons run, some other cw shows started good but went downhill completely after the first seasons, cw is the problem, superman and lois should leave the cw and it should move to hbo max, it's a good show and deserves more attention

You are imagining things about the costume making his head look small, I just don't see it at all. One imperfection is that they missed highlighting the similarity of Morgan Edge's plan to 'take over the world' with the European conquest of the Americas (etc.), they could have struck an excellent anti-imperialism message - one that would have dovetailed well with Morgan Edge's capitalism.

Pretty much spot. I don't share the same nostalgic bias for Fleischer, Christopher Reeve, or other "classic" renditions of the character (despite being older myself), but otherwise I'm of a similar mind on this particular rendition of the character. It might just be the best live action Superman, certainly better than DCEU's take, and maybe even second only to the DCAU overall.
Likewise I found that the show and in particular its villain got less interesting in the second half. Seriously, my eyes rolled hard when we got the reveal of Morgan Edge as not just an evil Kryptonian, but as Superman's estranged half brother. I'm really sick and tired of evil Kryptonians as the go to villains just so Superman has somebody to punch... not to mention the proliferation of and over reliance on such enemies really undercuts Superman's supposed moniker as the LAST son of Krypton.
As disappointed as I was with Edge by the end of this season, however, I'm still willing to hold out hope for him as a character if he returns in future seasons. The principal theme of this series has been FAMILY... a big old extended family made up of not just Superman, Lois, and their kids but also JHI and his daughter by alternate Lois. Edge's last words were that all he ever wanted was a family, and if the show can ever figure out how he fits into that dynamic with the rest of the cast then maybe just maybe he could become an interesting character.
