  • Mama is a fairly recent horror film that found success and praise. But no one ever got around to listing all its sins... until today. Boo!
    Next week: Cartoon sins and... cartoon sins.
    Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

      A bit late but there are numerous cases where parents murder their own children when faced with losing them in a custody hearing or to any other person. Their logic seems to be if I can't have them, no one can. Or a final F U to their former spouse. The kids were pulling away emotionally near the end which could have been the trigger.

Like, how do they explain that several people were murder by a ghost when the ghost is gone and they have no actual proof? Its a good question and the only movie I've seen that did have the "police investigate" as normal police rather than a traumatised fellow survivor was just . . . awful. Guy murders a bunch of teenagers as revenge for his dad being a victim of their dads setting it all up as weird supernatural effects. One of the teenagers actually figured it all out, recorded the evidence then at the end. He walks into a crime scene with multiple murdered kids, one "suspect" screaming "I didn't do it, look at the tape its all there." picks up the tape and say's to the cop in charge "I left this here last night mind if I take it?" and the cop just say's yes. Never mind its evidence in a multiple homicide crime scene, never mind the guy just basically confessed to being there, never mind the kid screaming look AT what he just picked up there can't be anything of interest or importance on it.
      So anyway point is if that's the level of police competence in these worlds they'll probably get off scott free. Still there's a lot of movies I'd love to see a "what happens next" epilogue for.

    In my local area there was a DJ who went missing driving back from a gig; he had fallen asleep on the drive home and driven into the trees off of a major US interstate where he died when he hit one of those trees. It took about 5 years before they found his car with him in it.
    There are cases that are decades longer of similar things.

    To everyone complaining about the DID Sin: he is not saying that it isn't real, he is saying that the term "Dissociative personality disorder" isn't real. Dissociative identity disorder is the correct term according to the DSM IV. He is not saying that mental illness isn't real.

    • @khaotictrash
      @khaotictrash Před 2 lety +20

      Exactly, he was saying that the “disorder” the doctor described isn’t real, the creators basically just mashed the current name (DID) with its old name (MPD)
      Also he can’t diagnose one or both girls of that age with DID just based off of a supposed imaginary friend, all children have imaginary friends. They most likely would’ve been diagnosed with PTSD and possibly psychosis due to the unnatural attachment to Mama, but not DID, because they wouldn’t have the same split personality and that’s not how it works. And usually children aren’t even diagnosed, because it’s a traumagenic disorder that goes undetected for years. Most people aren’t even diagnosed until they’re adults, and it’s rare for teenagers to be diagnosed with it.

    The summery/ story of mama -
    Distraught after losing his fortune in the 2008 financial crisis, stockbroker Jeffrey Desange murders his colleagues and his estranged wife before taking his young daughters, 3-year-old Victoria and 1-year-old Lily, away from home. Driving dangerously fast on a snowy road, Jeffrey loses control; the car slides down the mountain and crashes in the woods, breaking Victoria's glasses. Surviving the collision, he takes the children into an abandoned cabin. Planning to kill his daughters then himself, he prepares to shoot Victoria but is attacked and killed by a shadowy figure.
    Five years later, a rescue party, sponsored by Jeffrey's identical twin brother Lucas, finds Victoria and Lily in the cabin, alive but in a feral state after years of isolation. The girls are put in a welfare clinic under the watch of Dr. Gerald Dreyfuss. They make reference to "Mama," a mysterious maternal protector figure. The girls are initially hostile to Lucas, but Victoria recognizes him after he gives her a pair of glasses and she can see properly. Dreyfuss agrees to support Lucas and his girlfriend Annabel's custody claim against the girls' maternal great-aunt, Jean Podolski, as long as Dreyfuss is allowed to monitor the girls' progress. Victoria acclimates quickly to domestic life while Lily retains much of her feral behavior.Lucas is attacked by Mama and put into a coma, leaving Annabel to care for the girls alone. Though reluctant at first, she makes progress with Victoria, but Lily remains hostile. Alarmed by nightmares of a strange woman and Victoria's warning about Mama's jealousy, Annabel asks Dreyfuss to investigate further. Dreyfuss’s research brings to light the story of Edith Brennan, a mentally-ill asylum patient who died in the 1800s; he recovers a box from a government warehouse containing a baby's remains.
    Annabel has a dream revealing Mama's past; when Edith Brennan (Mama) was sent to the asylum, her child was taken from her and given to nuns. She escaped the asylum, stabbed a nun, and took her baby back. Fleeing her pursuers, Edith jumped off a cliff, but before hitting the water below, she and the child made impact with a large branch. Edith drowned, but the child's body snagged on the branch and did not fall with her into the water. Annabel realizes that Mama still hasn't realized her child was caught on the tree, and doesn't understand why her baby wasn't in the water with her. Edith's troubled ghost searched the woods for her child for years until she discovered Victoria and Lily and took them as substitutes.
    Lucas regains consciousness after a vision of his dead twin tells him to go to the cabin in order to save his daughters. Victoria's growing closeness to Annabel makes her less willing to play with Mama, unlike Lily. Dreyfuss visits the cabin and is killed by Mama. Annabel takes Dreyfuss’s case file on Mama, including the body of her baby. Annabel and the girls are attacked by a jealous Mama, who kills Aunt Jean and uses her body to spirit the children away. Annabel and Lucas find the children on the same cliff where Mama leaped with her infant to their deaths over a century earlier, preparing to re-enact the deadly fall with Victoria and Lily.
    When Annabel offers Mama the remains of her infant, Mama recognizes her own child and her appearance briefly turns human. However, when Annabel and Lucas try to bring the girls to safety, Lily calls out for her, Mama reverts to her monstrous form and attempts to take the girls again. Annabel clings to Victoria, who asks to stay with Annabel instead of leaving with Mama, which Mama accepts. After a tearful farewell, Mama and Lily plummet off the cliff. Mama and Lily happily embrace before hitting the branch, turning into a shower of moths. Annabel and Lucas embrace Victoria, who notices a moth landing on her hand, indicating that Lily is still with her in spirit.

    Production-
    The film began production in Pinewood Toronto Studios on 3 October 2011. Production ended on 9 December 2011. Parts of the film were also shot in Quebec City, Quebec. Although the film was produced in Canada, it is set in Clifton Forge, Virginia. The film was initially scheduled for release in October 2012, but was later rescheduled for January[8] to avoid competing with Paranormal Activity 4. Its success at that later date has, among with other dump months horror films, convinced studios to start opening horror movies year-round.[9]
    Reception - Mama received mixed reviews from critics. It holds a 63% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 164 reviews, with an average rating of 5.93/10. The website's critical consensus states: "If you're into old school scares over cheap gore, you'll be able to get over Mama's confusing script and contrived plot devices."[10] Metacritic gives the film a weighted average score of 57 out of 100, based on 35 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[11]
    Richard Roeper, writing for the Chicago Sun-Times, enjoyed the film, giving it three stars out of four and saying, "Movies like Mama are thrill rides. We go to be scared and then laugh, scared and then laugh, scared and then shocked. Of course, there's almost always a little plot left over for a sequel. It's a ride I'd take again."[12] Owen Gleiberman, reviewing for Entertainment Weekly, gave the movie a B and said, "Mama lifts almost every one of its fear-factor visuals from earlier films: the rotting black passageways that spread like mold over the walls (very Ringu meets Repulsion); the fire in her eyes; the crouched figures that skitter and pounce à la the infamous 'spider' outtake from the original Exorcist; the way that Mama, with her arms like smoky-shadowy bent tendrils, evokes both the monster from the Alien films and also, in a funny way, the crumpled-puppet gothic mischievousness of Tim Burton animation. Nothing in the movie is quite original, yet Muschietti, expanding his original short,[13] knows how to stage a rip-off with frightening verve. It helps to have an actress on hand as soulful as Jessica Chastain..."[14]
    IGN editor Scott Corulla rated the film 7.3 out of 10 and wrote, "This is a fine first film for director Andrés Muschietti and, despite some missteps and disappointments, very well could be a harbinger of interesting things to come for the helmer."[15] The Huffington Post wrote, "With Del Toro's name up front, expect Mama to be the winter horror film of choice in 2013."[16] The Philadelphia Inquirer called the film an "effectively spooky ghost story", adding, "Mama is full of arty tropes - sepia-toned flashbacks, flickering lights, menacing murmurings. The atmosphere is positively spectral. And it's easy to see why del Toro is a champion: Like his Pan's Labyrinth, there's a fairy-tale aspect (the film even begins with the title card "Once upon a time..."), with children in jeopardy, a witchy monster, and edge-of-the-precipice confrontations."[17] Canyon News wrote, "The scares do indeed come a mile a minute and will unnerve even some of the toughest moviegoers."[18] Mick LaSalle of the Houston Chronicle wrote, "Director Andres Muschietti is cinematically literate - in one example he borrows a flashbulb effect from Hitchcock's Rear Window - and he has visual panache. Much of the movie is surprisingly beautiful."[19]
    Sequel - In February 2013, it was reported that a sequel was in works.[29] In January 2016, Universal announced that duo Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kevin Kölsch would rewrite and direct the sequel.[30] Chastain would not return for the sequel.[31]

To explain it simply it used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) and it is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality identities. As far as the complaint about not showing Mama sooner, I think that the timing was pretty good. She became a lot less scary once we saw her face, but around that point, we learned her potentially sympathetic backstory, so the fear was replaced with an emotional investment. If they exposed her appearance before we had a reason to give a shit about anything else, then it would have made the time between the physical reveal and the backstory reveal more empty and uninteresting.
    And Mama's conflicting interests add character depth, in my opinion. It shows how tortured she really is and is a good use of irony. She became a ghost due to the guilt of killing her own child and the feeling of being robbed of her motherhood, she killed the girls' father for trying to commit the same sin that she committed at the end of her life, and took them in as surrogates to be the mother she should have been in life as if trying to make up for what she did. But then somebody else takes the girls from her anyway despite how much she did to take care of them. So she becomes desperate again and in the end, she can't escape the psychotic jealousy that caused her to kill her own child in the first place and she ends up killing Lilly, just like she had prevented her father from doing years before. It's bittersweet. Sweet because she got what she needed- a child of her own in the form of Lilly- and Lilly appears to be at peace too, since manifested as a blue butterfly/moth (symbolically a positive thing) before departing. Bitter because Lilly is still super dead, and Mama couldn't overcome her jealousy, and uncle and his girlfriend are probably fucked once the authorities find out that Lilly and her aunt who wanted to take her away both happen to be dead.

      Phieilly Dinyia I guess they're together forever in the afterlife. I think it's supposed to be good because the little one was too feral. And the young girl did a fine job for her first gig. And was native French- canadian, with no english.

      Once she's running from the cops and on the edge of the cliff, she knew they were going to take the child from her again and lock her up. "If I can't have her, no one will" maybe?

    • @fireidar
      @fireidar Před 6 lety +27

      I've seen the movie. She jumped over with her child so they could be together in the afterlife -their bodies would be together. The 'Mama' was in an asylum, so it was because of her mental instability she did it (although I don't remember how she got pregnant in the first place). However the baby got caught in a branch on the way down, so they were separated. So Mama spent all that time tormented by her separation from her baby. The box you see was SUPPOSED to be the baby's remains. Annabel brought them to the cliff, hoping giving them to Mama would make her leave now she had her child back, but she got pissed by it not being flesh and blood, just bones. She tried to take both girls, but they managed to only get back the one. So by taking the youngest who WANTED to go, Mama got her figurative baby, and they got theirs.

    I hate when ghost movies do the super violent or extreme death makes ghosts stay around cliche and then the ghosts start killing the characters, if that's true why don't the victims of the ghost come back as ghosts due to the violent murder? I keep hoping one of these shitty movies will go The Frighteners.

    so remember how this was hyped as 'scariest movie of the year' back then.
    then in the theater i was super put off by the design of Mama which reminded me more of some Disneyland ghost ride than anything.
    the most funny moment was when she finally got the actual bones of her actual baby and it kinda looks like she's gonna get peace, but then she's like 'F that shit', literally chucks the bones of HER baby over her shoulder and continues her ghostly... bitchery...
    also, I hate how towards the end they actually go and discuss/negotiate with the ghost, like, that takes all the scare away from me. A ghost is supposed to be unforgiving f-ing raw emotion (at least the scary kind) and you shouldn't be able to negotiate with it or sit it down for a therapy session for god's sake.
    this could only be scary to either people who were priorly hardly exposed to horror movies or people who are 14 and under.

    Jump scares are why I quit watching horror movies. They're cheap, stupid, and just another indication that Hollywood thinks it's audience is stupid. It's the equivalent of a laugh track in a comedy.

    Actually, the radio station running the story at that time is pretty realistic. They probably wouldn't have broadcast it so quickly if he had stopped after shooting his coworkers, but since he then went after his wife (ex-wife?) and took the kids it became a kidnapping and possible hostage situation which is going to treated more seriously since there was still a chance to save the kids. The radio report sounded to me like an Amber Alert, which would be transmitted asap, just incase someone might recognize them before the girls were harmed. So I would say the exposition radio in this movie was maybe the most believable excuse for exposition I've ever seen in a movie.
