➡️ I don’t ever think I’ve seen a bass played like this - especially a Rickenbacker! Today’s episode was a patron pick for “The Lung” by Dinosaur Jr. shot live at KEXP, and my ears are definitely ringing from the massive wash of overdriven riffs gelled together by bassist Lou Barlow and frontman J Mascis. As the song progressed, I loved peeling back the layers to unearth the nuances in their “co-op” riff style, where it’s almost like two guitarists playing the same riff with slight variations. I discuss Lou’s unorthodox “strumming” approach (strumming as high as fret 7), how he often keeps the bass lines on one string for a consistent tone, how capable he is of filling out the composition when the guitar drops out, and how his entire approach taps into a visceral experience while pummeling through a disarray of washy riffs. Truly interesting stuff - haven’t heard anything quite like it! 😵💫🤘🏼

Man I wish I could go back to having never heard of Dino Jr just so I can discover them for the first time again
yup: highschool, a skater put his headphones over my head and said: you gonna love this. 35+ years later, still my favorite band
Lou has stated in interviews that his bass playing style developed as a way to be heard among Jay's enormously loud playing.
And every bass player said “I feel that”. 😅
he also started on guitar before bass playing more hardcore music so his aggressiveness stems from that
And, perhaps a wee bit of Peter Hook's style of carrying the melody from his Joy Division days?
Not to forget Lou's beginnings on the ukulele and guitar. I played in a band (Little Guitar Army) where we played custom made wee guitars that were tuned to "C"
Not a plug, but a visual/mental reference point

To watch a bass teacher enthusast be gobsmacked head scratching like this was awesome. I hope you have since listened much and realized the fantastical innovation and talent that Dinasaur Jr is..
Lou's unique approach to bass is overshadowed by J Mascis's guitar skills. Glad to see Lou getting props.
j mascis guitar skilllll .....hahahahahahahahahahahah not so much skill
J has skills, but Lou has A E S T H E T I C
Check out Lou's other band Sebadoh where he writes most of the music.
@@sebg2086 found the ignoramus
@@sebg2086Better than you
Debbie Googe, the bassist of My Bloody Valentine, has a very similar playing style to this, which likely also came about as a result of Kevin Shields' extraordinarily loud guitar playing. Her bass tones on the "You Made Me Realize" EP are fucking unreal.
analyzing dinosaur jr made me subscribe. They were the loudest band i have seen. I think my intestines were vibrating.
I saw Jerry only’s misfits at toad’s place in 2001, I was turning eleven and I came out of that unable to hear right for six hours, thought I had permanently deafened myself 😂
I know that feeling. I had that vibrating organs feeling when I saw A Place to Bury Strangers.
In Jan 2024, in PDX, during Gargoyle, he kept pressing pedals and the sound kept going UP & UP & UP. I had ear plugs but had to put my fingers in my ears thinking they fell off. J definitely has one more gear if he wants it. I can only imagine he has custom ear plugs that cover 99% of the sound. It's unbearable...yet every time he's in town, I'm there.
Dinosaur Jr. Is best band all time. Better than anyone else straight up. Listen to their studio albums. Start at the beginning and go through the catalog. Best band hands down.
Lou's bass playing style is developed from his background playing ukulele. So those chords make a little more sense, even though it's still a super unique style. When you see some of his solo shows with ukulele it's very apparent his Dinosaur Jr work an amalgamation of bass and guitar.
Interesting! Truly adds some context here. I mean, I figured he had a background in guitar of course, but that’s pretty unique!
I saw Dino when i was 13 and they gave me permanent tinnitus. Great band.
My ears are still ringing from seeing them at the Cotton Club in Atlanta with a then almost-unknown Smashing Pumpkins opening, circa 1989-1990
A friend has always contended it was the same as jets engines in a small room for 2 hours.
I’m not sure if most people realize how much he plays like Lemmy! Both love the rock and roll chords on the bass. And both play with rock and roll passion. 🤘😈🤘
Both started out as rhythm guitarists as well
Out come the dino-nerds..Lou is great to watch.. what he's playing doesn't look like what he's playing, a super entertaining player.
I recently read Dinosaur Jr described as “Your favourite band’s favourite band” and I think that’s pretty accurate.
These guys fly under the radar a little, but they are highly influential.
A good example would be in pop punk/punk rock. Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 is definitely influenced by this style of playing. He was definitely listening to Dino Jr and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. You can especially hear it all over the earlier Blink records. And of course, they are one of the most influential bands of the 90’s - 00’s across punk and alt rock.
They also covered Freak Scene on Flyswatter
@@poppunknerd182 You're right! I forgot about that.
Influential is right. Watch a clip of Dinosaur circa 1987 then watch a clip of early Nirvana. So much of Kurt's stage presence came from J Mascis.
Ahhh! My favorite band ever. Lou is THE man! One of his other bands, Sebadoh, is great too. He didn't play much bass for them, moved to guitar, but a killer group.
I've had the same copy of 'You're living all over me' on vinyl since 1990. Still a favorite. You need to do Husker Du's Pink turns to blue or The girl who lives on heaven hill.
Greg Norton’s bass lines are the criminally unheralded driving force behind Hüsker Dü’s sound.
He deserves a lot of respect for playing with his fingers in a fast punk rock band. It’s the secret sauce for sure
Do the “Swan” from the KEXP show you’ll see Lou really go off
Never really checked these guys out and I was instantly in love with this performance. So raw and energetic. Everyone is playing their hearts out here.
What a wonderful journey you’re about to have!! If you ever get a chance to see ‘em, bring earplugs. 🤘🏻
@@meatforyourmom bring INDUSTRIAL-strength plugs.
The last 7 years or so it isn’t as loud. I think if J is in a bad mood or perhaps drunk they crank the volume.
@@samharris4794j is straight edge believe it or not.
Loudest concert I’ve ever been to. Second row of a nightclub at center stage. Both J & Lou’s amps pointed towards my ears.
Pure blood sweat and tears in rock music!
Seeing Dinosaur Jr live was a bucket list gig for me many years ago and they were so god-damn loud! Amazing live band
You gotta do In a Jar and Watch the Corners next. Also Pick Me Up has my all time favorite guitar solo in it.
Lou is probably the most underrated bassist.
How these guys don't have severe hearing loss is beyond me. All this sound from 3 guys. In concert, there's a point where Lou plays lead guitar and J. plays bass. Legends.
I know at least Murph and Lou have been using earplugs since their first rehearsal as a band. Not sure about J though
Lou played lead on Garden a few weeks back at Sydney gig, J on bass. Legends in deed! Oh yeah seen them 3 times, ear plugs are a must!
@@wayneandrews797 just found out they're opening for Flaming Lips and Weezer this autumn.
@@user-cs4fg1rm5k Same!!
Ah dinosaur jr, proud to have these guys come from my hometown. I used to work at a local classic barcade and three of our regulars were frank black and his kids, dinosaur jr and GG Allin’s weird brother with his 6 inch long hitler mustache
Nice dude!!!
Lou is from my hometown. He left the band after the following album, Bug. He went on to form lo-fi legend, Sebadoh. He switched to guitar mostly. He also had a big hit with the Folk Implosion. "Natural One". Would be a good song to review
The bass player Lou also plays Ukulele which I’d imagine is why he plays like that. Dinosaur Jr doesn’t get the love they deserve but they are a killer band
I got hooked on Dinosaur Jr. through Where You Been (aka a non Lou album) back in 1993 then worked my way backward in their discography. J's one of my favorite guitarists to really emerge in that timeline. You're Living All Over Me is an incredible work, but the production of the times didn't really allow Lou's playing to come through as it should. You can feel some awesome progressions going through but damn it's tough to isolate - hence I'm not surprised he's analyzing live footage instead. Props for taking the time to review!
Great read. Thanks for hanging out!!
Agreed! Same here. "Get Me" is still one of my favorite songs to jam to. I loved playing songs of that Pumpkin's Gish and Nirvana's Bleach back in college.
he's pretty prominent in the mix on in a jar
Hard to put into words how great it is to see a breakdown of Dinosaur like this and have the focus be on Lou. Dude is a fucking treasure and a great guitarist too. What I would give to go back in time so I could hear this band again for the first time. I spent about a year obsessed with Where You Been when it came out and just got the long awaited repress on vinyl a few months ago, so Dinosaur has been on my mind and turntable a lot lately. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and these episodes of you listening to legendary punk bands for the first time and breaking down their songs is such a treat. You are certainly tumbled down the punk rock rabbit hole and there is so much more. I said this in a comment last night, but will say it again, NoMeansNo - Wrong. Keep these videos coming. Great stuff!
Lou did an interview on Reverb where he talks about his bass playing with Dinosaur. You did a great job with your critique of his playing.
Worth noting that before the band was fully developed Lou Barlow was on guitar and J Mascis was on drums (Cobain asked J to join nirvana which is unrelated but an insane fact lol)
Lou’s part on the track Raisins is a perfect example of how he’s able to make harmony within a bass line. He plays the start of the song’s progression voiced as 0-7-9-0 , 0-10-12-0 , 11-0-0-12 and on the record the bass and guitar fuse together into 1 cohesive behemoth of noise
Although Dino’s early albums are labeled “noise rock” a lot of the times, they were very influential on lofi indie, grunge, and shoegaze
People love Lou's bass not only because how it sounds, but because how fun looks to play it!
Dinosaur Jr. is country music played in the style of Sonic Youth, the Minutemen are country music played in the style of Hardcore Punk. The Grateful Dead were country music played in the style of Psychedelia.
You should check out their KEXP performance of 'Forget the Swan'. That's a wild ride and such a great song! Thanks for the video!
Yes, watch the whole performance
Dinosaur Jr is the loudest band I've ever experienced. Motorhead was pretty loud, but I didn't see them in a small space like DJ.
When a buddy of mine got me into Dinosaur Jr, he described them as "a quiet band that plays really fucking loud."
I saw them live with My Bloody Valentine. Took 2 days to get my hearing back.
When I saw him last Winter, Lou was playing a Gibson Ripper & he KILLED.
He’s playing an Ernie ball now
It's interesting, their live show is a lot more noisy and dense than their album recordings (easily the loudest band I've ever seen live and I've seen Converge live) it's kinda wild to see them cram those Marshall stacks into the KEXP studio lol
This was recorded live for the radio at the Doug Fir in Portland not in the KEXP studio.
@@sciencehlogic lol it even says that at the start, not sure how I missed that.
Fun fact, my dad lives in the same town as J Mascis, and one time I was visiting a record store and he walked in, looking stoned as hell and just wandering around looking at records like everyone was a surprise, but not buying one. it was one of the most wild run-ins I've had with someone
One of the funniest things about these guys, that Ive heard, In regard to why Lou left Dinosaur Jr (J Mascis broke a guitar over Lou’s head), was J Mascis said “In my defense, it was an acoustic guitar.”
Lou plays his Ricky more like it’s a standup bass.
He threw his guitar at Lou during a live show, you can even see it in the music video for Teen Age Riot by Sonic Yourh
Ok man... now that you have brought Dinosaur jr into the fold, I'm subbed. 😂
This was sooooo pleasant to watch! As a huge dinosaur jr fan, i randomly stumbled onto your review while listening to their music and i am so satisfied. You are obviously very knowledgeable and i love how you are so articulate with your descriptions while also beingvery respectful. Keep it up! You rock
Awesome! Thank you so much for the kind words!! 🙏🏼
Daaamn did homie just casually drop that he has perfect pitch ?? Lol
I mention it occasionally! But I do, and makes doing these videos fun 🤓
Welcome to the Dinosaur Jr Appreciation society. There is always room for 1 more fan. 3 amazing musiains
I love watching musicians react to dinosaur, they are such a unique and awesome band!
I love watching people's reactions of dinosaur jr for the 1st time👍🏻
Love 2 see young people discovering Dinosaur. I've been listening and playing my Jazzmaster here since since Bug and Freak Scene in 1988 and still couldn't begin 2 explain what's going with them guys. Just perfect music. You should check out Forget The Swan if you haven't already
When you put in context to the year it was written. It was far ahead of the curve of popular music.. I love the overall concept. Never heard of them. Definitely wow!!!!
This was such a treat for me! Dinosaur junior was one of my first loves when I got into alternative or punk or whatever you wanna call it. This album is one of my all-time favorites. I love how J Mascus sprinkles in bits of classic rock before abandoning it right back into chaos. Lou Barlow is just a beast, coming up with insanely melodic and at the same time, very dissonant baselines. And Murph is a machine on the drums for being able to stay locked in with it all.
And I just loved your mouth-agape reaction to it when it first started! And I continue to marvel that your ability to listen to genres of music you’ve never heard before and be able to break it down.
Thanks Andrew, love to hear it!! 🙏🏼
Where You Been is a grunge classic along with Gish and Bleach. Loved how those albums followed no rules.
Maaaan I love Jay's guitar solos. There's epic solos on nearly every Dino song.
Great to see some Dinosaur Jr.
I ran across the way back when I was in highschool, late 80's
They have a good catalog worth going through for sure!
🤘😀🤘
I love dinosaur Jr. see J around Amherst and Northampton MA sometimes. Always want to say hi but he’s never a big fan of that kind of thing. My girlfriend and I are huge fans. Up until a few weeks ago their picture at the top of their Spotify page was at our favorite diner on the way to my girlfriend’s mom’s house
Saw Dinosaur Jr. on the 3rd Lollapalooza tour. It was outdoors, in the middle of an airfield in Rhode Island and it was still almost too loud.
😅
My favorite bass player is Rose Marshack from the Poster Children..she just published a book also, called Play it like a Man..and a tenured prof.
I love Lou!!! thanks for shining a light on him!
You bet!!
Freak Scene off the Bug album is a stone cold classic
You just got the attention of all the DJ fans on this one. Look into them for sure. They’re local to me.
Saw them at Fenway Park once.
Seen them in the small clubs too. Such a great band. Also I appreciate your vids thanks.
Love it! Thank you!
Classic album, indeed! What he's doing is definitely different, but there are others who have trod somewhat similar ground: Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order), Lemmy (Motorhead), the dual bassists in Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Mark Sandman (Morphine)...
Lou also has a band called Sebadoh.
great songwriter!
Thanks for this ❤
You're so welcome!
Welcome to the world of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh. 😊
What a blast from the past! I saw them in 1993 at Lollapalooza. They were on stage when a giant storm came through and ripped the top of the stage off. Great job as always. I enjoy all your videos.
Sounds like a true rock n’ roll story to me! 😅🤘🏼 - thanks so much for the kind words!
Huge fan. J Mascis (gtr) was on Portlandia and was funny. I found this LP on tape in 1989 and have been a devotee since then. Met J at shows, very cool legend☮️🎸
Saw them mid 90s, their vibe is always ear bleedingly loud and very enjoyable!
Dinosaur jr is a great band very unique! You should listen to the studio recording of that song as well.
I remember hearing Dinosaur Jr. for the first time in the ‘90s and my brain about exploded (in a good way) I found out that my older cousin saw them in Germany with Mudhoney and I thought he was the coolest person in the world. These guys rock!
Yes! Keep up the great videos, Mark!
Thanks! Will do!
Yeah a RIC through the Marshall super bass is a powerful sound. Definitely a great rig for bass players who play the bass like a guitarist!
Great analysis. It would be super interesting to see you check out David Wm. Sims, the bass player for The Jesus Lizard.
Just saw Dinosaur Jr live four days ago and Lou is such a beast - and super energetic on stage. Amazing show.
Auckland?
@@moonandantarctica2 -- Yup. Saw Dinosaur Jr. on Saturday and then the Melvins and Mr. Bungle on Sunday... a good weekend. Lou was so energetic through the whole show that my wife asked if he was the original bassist (i.e., assuming that he couldn't be as old as J and have that much energy).
I've seen hundreds of live bands and Dinosaur Jr at the 40 Watt in Athens Georgia, early 90s was by far the loudest. A friend of mine who is a guitarist had played bass with J. when he would be on tour solo, so he knows them all and can play all the Dino songs.
Far out! Saw them at Reading Festival in England 1997! Great band.
Nice shout out to kexp! ❤
Dino Jr! First too! Entire album is epic. J Mascis has to be one of the loudest playing guitarists. Little history, Barlow was the original bass player, kicked out in 1989 after Bug album, reunited in 2002-2005. That KEXP concert was 2021 if im correct. So there was a large span of time without Lou there.
J is definitely one of the loudest but the loudest in history is actually Pete Townsend of the Who.
@@SonicRave1 never wouldve expected that from Pete, cool.
Just love this series. Fun and educational.
🥹🙏🏼
Man, I haven't needed to say a thing about what to check out. The fellas are collectively leading you in all the right directions. I guess we have the right idea when it comes to kickass bass work in heavy music. Dinosaur Jr is a trip. Just for fun, check out "Yeah right"
Lemmy Kilmister of Hawkwind and Motorhead Played A Ricky And A Marshall Overdriven To Hell, And Lot Of It Was Chordal Mid And Treble Driven. Probably Why I Like Chris Squire And Geddy Lee So Much! Great Review Mark...
That’s awesome you mentioned Lemmy. Lou has said in interviews he was inspired by the way Lemmy played bass and his gear plus he didn’t want to get lost in the mix with what J was playing.
J Mascis is a living condemnation of the corporatization of rock radio. Dinosaur Jr are a better band in every way than 9/10 front -page-streaming-service darlings. And yet the average rock fan will have never heard of them. It’s simply criminal.
I loved this review! Huge DJ fan and never appreciated how Lou slid down the neck to fill in for J.
would love to see your opinion on tilt - berkeley pier! love your channel!
i LOVE dinosaur jr. they're one of the most underrated bands of the era. J Mascis is the master of the big muff alt sound.
LOVE these guys! It's a shame so many other groups got rich trying to sound like them. Never thought of them as having interesting bass lines though. Glad to see this breakdown to see what i was missing.
The greatest band if all time, in my opinion. The guitarist started out as a drummer and wanted to make his guitar sound as loud as the drums. Lou, the bassist, developed his style so he could be heard through J.
Been loving me some Dino Jr since the late 80s!👏🏽👍🏽
J. Mascis has a bassist? 😉
Live Dinosaur Jr. is the loudest show I’ve ever experienced
Dinosaur Jr. (and Jane's Addiction) still don't get enough credit - thank you for this!
Hey, my names Ned originally from NY and now in Spain and I'm a drummer. I dig what you're doing and want to see more reactions and breakdowns for under the radar bands like these guys. Lou Barlow has said himself that legendary bassist frontman Lemmy from Motorhead was a big influence on how Lou approached the bass. You don't have videos about Lemmy, who almost always treated his bass like a guitar. Low brothers that I hope get some attention are Bootsy Collins, Chuck Rainey, Jerry Jermott, Francis Prestia, Bruce Foxton, Paul Gray (UK) also a chord player, Jack Casady, Herbie Flowers, Jack Bruce, Carole Kaye, Tom Fowler, Paul Jackson, Larry Graham, Barry Adamson, Steve Garvey, Rob Wright, Trevor Boulder.....
It amazes me so much, that you and all the other "reaction" channels could have missed out so much good music.
I always felt he was just playing two roles - Base and Second Guitar. the high neck for the guitar heavy, lower for mix and lowest for bass . honestly I always thought this song was either a four piece or multilayered in studio and extra musician live.
Great points. I remember while recording this, I meant to say that when the guitar dropped out, I could’ve been fooled into thinking I was hearing a second guitar and a bass player still going underneath if I wasn’t watching a live video to see that it wasn’t.
Dinosaur Jr is the loudest band I've ever seen live, without a doubt.
I never thought of dinosaur jr as a bass band. Mascis is an overwhelming presence. i almost forgot there's two other ppl on that band. D jr sounds like Jimmy hendrix playing dissonant alternative music. But I'm not a hendrix fan, so that could just be the all the fuzz?
Lou is an excellent guitarist as well
If you want to make another dinosaur jr video you should check out “In a Jar.” The bass in that song is really cool.
I just asked my wife to Shhh! because you were analysing, instead of pausing the video ... such is the impact of your reactions!
Ha!
Lou's technique is interesting, especially since he almost never misses notes. You expect it to be sloppier.
Lou credits Hüsker dü for inspiring his technique
So much to say about this. Dinosaur Jr is one of the holy trinity in my rock religion. It's not easy listening but very much what the late 80s and early 90s sounded like to me. Your observations about the cohesive bass and guitar parts are due to j mascis insisting on Lou playing certain parts. This and other issues seem to be the reason for Lou to leave e band. Very happy they've worked it out and play together today. It would be cool for you to hear a more recent tune like Over It or maybe their "hit" Feel the Pain which doesn't have Lou Barlow playing. By the way Minutemen/firehouse and the Pixies round out the trinity.
Great read! Thank you.
Lou Barlow is fantastic song writer. Check out Sebadoh! (Bakesale or Harmacy albums)
And yes Lo-fi indie is all about getting all tone and disharmony possibly possible out of as little as possible... thus. There is no 'no you cant do that/go there cause it not how it suposed to be done'.
If you want the quickest introduction to "indie rock" listen to The Wailing Ultimate compilation from 1987. There is a long list of bands who are amazing that people have never familiarized themselves with. Those who know ,know what I mean.
Btw these guys are almost 60 at this point to give you some relative perspective.
Btw part 2.. The version of The Wailing Ultimate on CZcams is sounds terrible and is missing songs. Find it some other way.
Dude … You just keep doing some of my very favorite songs and bands … Lou kills it man … Plays a ric or a ripper through a marshall.. Lou is a fellow western massachusettian. This isn’t the best thing you could’ve looked at . I’d go deeper look at the whole record and the following record bug
I've seen the Poster Children at least 20 times..but I'm from Kalamazoo.
My favorite Dinosaur Jr song
Another interesting one is Peter Hook (Joy Division / New Order). Lots of chords, high playing, and the open string thing.
Lou playing a Bass like an Acoustic.
J on Martin & Me, playing an Acoustic like and Electric.
