    ---------------------------------------------------
➡️ I didn’t know punk rock could be THIS EPIC! My first time hearing “The Decline” by NOFX was such a worthy and righteous start to 2024, and I can’t thank you all enough for shoving the requests in my face for weeks on end. This was unbelievable. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing familiar songwriting elements from “Idiots Are Taking Over” - the clever chord progressions, the bass-heavy melodies - but I feel like the curtain was lifted to a unexpected goldmine of songwriting with this one. I discuss so many things that I can hardly list them: Fat Mike’s circular picking technique with bass chords, the theory behind each song segment, recurring themes and motifs, smooth AF secondary dominants, minor IVs, and simply how brilliant this epic track is. You guys also tricked me into doing a full-album reaction, but I’m so glad I did. This is hands down my favorite reaction video I’ve done to date. It truly left me speechless. 😶💫

It's interesting that you mentioned Mike's voice as being some what pleasing, because I feel like a lot of people might hate his voice because it's so harsh. But I was listening to them a few weeks ago, and I was just so relaxed, that I realized that NOFX feels like "home". I've been listening to them since I was a kid, and their music pushes all of the right buttons and puts me at ease. As someone who's been playing punk rock for 20 years (and 99% self taught) it's always extremely cool to see formally educated and super talented players dissect these songs from a technical point of view. Obviously even self taught musicians absorb certain amounts of theory over the years, so it's cool to see that expanded upon like this. Great job.

Once in music class (middle school), we could bring CDs for the teacher to play ONE track from to the class and people would listen. I was very pleased to bring The Decline and ask the teacher to play the first track. (Punk rock wasn't popular in my country so everybody was pissed 😈)
Random somewhat related fact: the last track on every Drag The River album is the same album in one single track. I once asked a band member (Jon Snodgrass) why, and he told me that it was for jukeboxes in bars (which you don't see in my country either). If you knew the trick, you could have the whole album played for a quarter. Pretty cool!

This song is so intense and emotionally invoking it’s brought me to tears, specifically the part: oh brother where, have you gone to I swear… I can’t even finish typing it because it’s too much. The idea of a kid accidentally killing his brother and dealing with the loss, the guilt and suffering that will never completely go away. It’s just horrible and it’s happened before many times. @@LowEndUniversity Here's a Canadian act you may enjoy. This album was written and recorded while they were in grade 10 or 11. Wild stuff.

This was awesome! As a musician and a huge fan of NOFX and punk rock in general, it’s great to see your reaction and non-bias feedback on the musicianship. Keep up the good work!

One of the guitar players El Hefe, is also the horn player. He actually got his degree from The Berklee College of Music and is a really good jazz and metal guitar player as well.

This hit me right in the feels. I was tearing up during the vid. Watched them play this last Sun on their final tour, have listened to them since I was about 12, I just turned 45 2 days ago. Vale NOFX.

NoFX is such a special band. They were my favorite back in the 90’s, and as I’ve come back to listen to those old records, I’m starting to see the through lines from NoFX straight up to my favorite band of all time, BTBAM. ❤

My favorite 3 bands are nofx, between the buried and me, and phish. At first glance they have nothing in common but then you see something like the decline

The algorithm has been feeding me your punk reactions. I'm loving it. keep it up. I played bass back in highschool but switched to drums after a year (still rythm section).

Rad, dude. I’ve been dying to get a little better at drums - only feel it’ll help my bass playing. Thanks for hanging with me!

Smelly has an amazing ability to come in with his drums and change how the phrasing sounds immediately. He’s like a punk drummer with jazz chops.

Who could also play like that ON HEROIN. Dude is insane. Clean for many years now, thankfully.

His chops are out of hand, and he never took any lessons. His kick technique was learned accidentally, by just trying to play as fast as possible.

It’s such an epic song. Thanks for doing a video on it. I’m also glad Fat Mike said to check out Suits and ladders as I recommend that in comment on your decline pole. Makes me think I know what I’m talking about.

The live version they recorded with an orchestra a while back at Red Rocks allows them to explore a lot of the musical ideas with an extended palette and number of musicians. While the original is amazing, I enjoy the live orchestral version due to how they interpreted phrases in the arrangement and also how they make ritardandos into the slower/softer sections more organic.

I bought this album when it came out. I’ve always been amazed by the variety in this song from the instruments to the vocals.
I love hearing you play the bass parts separately.
    Great review.

Great analysis of the intricacies of this song. I listen to The Decline a few times a month as it cycles through my NOFX playlist and it never gets old. Knowing the song so well it was fun watching your reactions to the 90° turns it takes all over the place. With NOFX on their farewell tour I'm going to all three shows in Brooklyn, and leading up to it I plan to sit down and (re)learn all the songs from all 9 albums they'll be playing those 3 nights, which includes The Decline.

Thank you for the video. This is one of my favorite tracks ever and your reaction + analysis was amazing.
I'm glad you did the record version to really see their talent, and I recommend you also watch the one with the orchestra, even if off camera, the orchestra brings so much emotion and depth to an already incredible song, every time I listen to it brings tears to my eyes.
