NO DOUBT have won me over! Bass Teacher REACTS to "Spiderwebs"
FULL-ALBUM Reactions, Lessons & More 👉 www.patreon.com/LowEndUniversity
---------------------------------------------------
➡️ I was really mistaken about No Doubt, and my ignorance led me to believe they were just another pop band I'd hear on the radio occasionally. I started receiving requests for "Spiderwebs" when I began covering ska punk bands on the channel, and I finally put 2 and 2 together to realize No Doubt were a huge force behind the ska wave in the 90s. Wow! I enjoyed reacquainting myself with the band listening through the opening track from 1995's "Tragic Kingdom" and realized I've truly slept on bassist Tony Kanal. I discuss how he strikes a perfect balance between serving the song and making his presence known, my theory on what technique he's using during the intro, his lyrical bass fills that contrast the guitar parts during the bridge, an analysis on his bass line development throughout the song, and much more. I'm bummed I wrote this band off years ago...🫲🏼 😒 🫱🏼

    Man who claims to be bass teacher, has never listened to the work of Peter Hook. That's like a guitar teacher whose never listened to Jimi Hendrix. There's no intelligent analysis here ; failing to understand that bass isn't just bass, but a means of creating sound and using it as such to create counter melodies and hooks in different ranges other than the usual low-end.. Add in use of chorus, phasing, echo and so forth, and you've got a bass guitar as an instrument for creating sound, rather than just being following guitar lines an octave below. Heaven knows what'd he make of listen to neds atomic dustbin who have a similar use of highend counter-melodies. Peter Hook is a core bass player for anyone who plays bass to listen to to get outside the confines of what people normally assume bass , same as geddy lee, alex griffin, jaco etc. Incredibly unimpressed with the content of this ; this teacher seems to consider bass as existing solely within a very narrow role, a very narrow box of sound. This 'teacher' couldn't teach me a single thing. Fails to understand how the bass works within the song and its structure. Been playing bass for 35 years. This video isn't worth watching.

Its a yamaha P-bass copy?" the bit where you say you need to lsiten to the five minute album version (rather than this, which is a live in the studio rehearsal). Watched all of it mate. And yes, I clearly watched all of it. How else would i know all that?

    • @LowEndUniversity
      @LowEndUniversity Před 8 hodinami

      Good to know. I just spoke heavily on the innovative nature of his playing, and because these are “blind” analysis videos, I’m picking up on these stylistic choices as the song develops. There’s a lot of bias on your end going into a video expecting someone unfamiliar to have context. That’s the whole point of these episodes is to discover and explore players I’m unfamiliar with, and to extract what makes them unique. Look me up, though. I’m the *farthest* thing from thinking bass exists in a “very narrow role”, considering I’m professionally-known to play a 6-string bass in progressive metal playing tons of leads, chords, and have had a career doing it for over 10 years. I fully understand what players like Peter do, and loved seeing these approaches to the instrument as far back as this song’s release. You can have your opinion on the content, but no need to be nasty.

  • @cainedbutable

    I feel like skate-punk and thrash are so much closer in musical style than a lot of people acknowledge. Skate-punk was basically a more polished version of hardcore, but came out not long after crossover-thrash was becoming popular - and crossover was kinda like a lot rougher, less polished thrash. So if you take a genre, un-polish it and then polish it again, its not too hard to the step and similarities between thrash and skate-punk, certainly moreso than many other metal genres. Adding to that, there are a good chunk of punk bands in the 00s who sound waaay more metal than punk. A Wilhelm Scream, Adrenalized, Belvedere, Almeida to name a few....
