âĄïž One of our Patreon members mentioned that hearing "Hey" by The Suicide Machines was simply required of me when exploring the ska punk scene. I see why, because this track QUICKLY pulled the rug out from under me and actually made my cheeks sore from smiling until the song's last second. Why does this song sound like two different bands within the first minute? I didn't expect a horn section after a Sabbath-era metal intro - that's for sure. In this episode, I discuss how the horn melodies add a deeper melodic edge to Jason Navarro's more "rhythmic" vocal lines, the killer bass lines from bassist Royce Nunley, their "abridged" 12-bar blues phrasing which peps up the song's energy to tremendous levels, a breakdown of the song's chord progression and riffs, and a reaffirmation of my love for Derek Grant's drumming. This one got me, y'all. đ€©đșđž

Destruction By Definition is one of the best ska albums!
One of my handful of albums I consider perfect
Whoa whoa whoa, Ska!!!??? LoL
One of my favourite bands - this album changed my life
I bought this CD having no idea who they were, was just browsing looking for stuff that looked cool. It didnât leave my CD player for months, and then I preordered Battle Hymns and that blew my mind too.
J 'avais 20 ans Ă la sortie de cet album, je l Ă©coute toujours! Pas une ride!!
Right there with you!
Same here. This album is what made me a musician
Yup they're amazing only other band I can say has a similar sound is 4 point 0 and both bands are unfortunately not that big
The album 'Destruction By Definition' is a complete banger from start to finish. Not. One. Bad. Song. A++
Amen
Absofuckinglutely!!
It was a much more straight punk direction, but I feel the same way about Battle Hymns. Their first two albums are spectacular
Facts
The quintessential ska-punk album
This is one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion. Start to end, solid gold. Wanna keep that smile going? Listen to the whole album!
Man youre nailing these videos. As a 40 year old punk dude, im so impressed by your choices.
I purely have everyone here, and on Patreon, to thank! Everyoneâs choices and requests are stellar.
â@@LowEndUniversitysuicide machines have a crazy discography they had a hardcore album after this, then they slowly went more melodic rock, with some influence of their older stuff. And I've seen them live 2x. And they're coming through Dallas this summer after YEARS. See them live if you can! Absolutely amazing.
Thanks for doing these videos. It's nostalgic but also love the appreciation these musicians are getting years later.
â@@LowEndUniversityand I agree. The drumming on this album is stellar.
@@Emadifications This album was mixed by the late Jerry Finn (RIP) who mixed everyone from Nancy Sinatra to Schleprock and Morrissey. He was 27 when he mixed this.
@@BikesAndBatallas schleprock . Wow that's a name I haven't thought of. Jerry was a genius.
very very VERY underrated band.
âSounds like two different bandsâ welcome to the Suicide Machines.
Friggin' got me!!
Check the first song on the album New Girl
â@@kelseyroberts7573then right after go into the following song.... SOS đ€
@@Westcoasttrendkill and then finish the album!
Wait til he hears the self titled album
Derek Grant is such a beast. His drumming on this entire record is insane. I saw Derek play a couple of weeks ago with the Vandals and he's still got the gift. He's also got a channel on YT where he posts lots of cool drum cams and exclusive footage. There's a Matt Freeman connection in this song. At 8:54 of this video, you can hear the Suicide Machines give a nod to Operation Ivy by doing the same "Insane" line from the song "Here We Go Again".
This album is so unapologetically influenced by Operation Ivy.
@@leftofpunk as all great ska punk should be! so many great 90s ska punk bands started by covering unity or sound system I feel like haha
Derek is a an absolute animal. his groove ability for punk/ska music is nuts. I love trying to drum to this song. His fills and tempo/groove/beat switches are sick as hell. This song is hard đ but so goddamn fun
Dude who was the patron that requested this song ? They deserve a big hug and Kiss
This is THE first song I play every time I pick up my bass
It's awesome to see you smiling throughout the entire song ! Your love for what you do is clear as day and insanely infectious
I was requesting Break the Glass or New Girl since the HWM video.
I think heâs ready for some Skankin Pickle now.
Voodoo Glow Skulls
some Mustard Plugs đ
Growing up outside Detroit, we used to go to "Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines" shows all the time back in the 90's at St.Andrews. Those were some fun times for sure.
I grew up in NJ (which had a tremendous scene in its own right), but 90's ska punk scenes were the best thing ever. what an amazing time.
Too young to go to shows but looooved this stuff as a kid grew up in battle creek about an hour away from detroit....13 year old me approves lol
Same. Also some great ones at Pharaoh's, Mosquito, and Clutch Cargos.

this album is the 2nd best punk ska album ever after operation ivy energy
"Horns!!! I didn't expect that!"... there is a trombone growling in that minor intro đ The trombone on the recording is Vinny nobile. Absolute monster of a player
I don't even play bass, I just enjoy this badass playlist you've made of my teenage years. Thank you
Love it! Many more songs to add coming up đ
Same here. I love this channel.
Same!đ«¶
Derek Grant, longtime drummer for Alkaline Trio and was featured in your âMr. Chainsawâ reaction video, is the man behind the kit on this album. Even more mind blowing, dude was only like 18 when he recorded this. Genuinely one of the best drummers of our generation.
Destruction by Definition is easily a 10/10, front to back, no skip record! If you haven't yet, take the half hour, or whatever, and listen to it clear through. I promise you won't be disappointed! You're welcomeđ
Love Suicide Machines. Fun fact: Seeing as how they are from Detroit, the singer Jason Navarro also fronted the brutal Detroit Hardcore band, Cold As Life for a short time when the band reunited after their original singer was shot to death in his sleep. Also, check out Jason Navarroâs other band, Hellmouth. Brutal Hardcore with a splash of Death Metal. You wonât be able to believe itâs the same singer. The album after this, 1998âs Battle Hymns is my favorite Suicide Machines album. Itâs a lot heavier and mixes ska with very fast and heavy Hardcore. Thanks again for the great reaction video. Please keep them coming.
Fell in love with this band the second I heard New Girl on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Iâm surprised you reacted to the horns so late because they come in at 11 seconds in to the song.
Was lucky enough to see them tour this album back in the day. Saw them in a skate shop with with 40 people there and then again opening for The Descendants in a bigger venue with like 250 people.
Time for a full album! That full album rocks.
My shitty high school punk band opened for these guys in 97, they were the only established band that didnât treat us like garbage. I will always love them even aside from the awesome music.
This is one of the best recorded punk albums I've heard. It sounds absolutely amazing at any volume
Jerry Finn (RIP) mixed this. One of the greats. And someone who, like John Feldmann of Goldfinger, had his hand in a range of music you wouldn't have expected.
You've done it again! I smiled the whole time watching you smile the whole time. I wore this CD out in my first car, knew every word to every song. 16 years old, nowhere to go, just driving around aimlessly rocking out. What a time!
With the skacore kick, check out Assorted Jelly Beans "No Time." Seems simple but great song overall!
The drumming and bass on this album is SO GOOD.
One of my favorite things about this channel is seeing your face reactions lol!!
đ
I love the nostalgia overload. Seeing these little known old songs from my youth being disected and enjoyed all these years later is such a warm feeling.
I was literally just thinking to myself the other day how you need to hear the Suicide Machines. So glad you've discovered them. This is hands-down one the absolute best albums from the90s.
Such a fun band. Watching you review these bands is such a treat. It's like rediscovering them and experiencing them for the first time all over again.
Love to hear it! đ
Operation Ivy - Energy, Suicide Machines - D by D, and Rancid - Out Come the Wolves is the holy trinity of Punk/Ska albums. Youre hitting all the right ones!
Streetlight Manisfesto - Keasbey Nights
Slaptick - self titled
Are honorable mentions.
LOVE this channel!
I would like to give a hornorable mention to Get Out Of My Way by The Uptones! đ
Man! "No face" was my falling in love song with ska-punk! â€
Love it!
The whole album is great! It would be fun to see an entire album listen.
Beyond excited to have seen the thumbnail for this video!! Honestly you could've chosen any song from it. It's a shame that the world doesn't know Royce Nunley's bass playing like it should.
The latest album revolution spring, one of my favorite albums in the last 10 years
3:39 didnt expect you to review one of my beloved Songs from the suicide Machines. Love that band.
Yessss!! One of the most important ska punk albums ever (aside from Op Ivyâs Energy). So stoked you got to hear Derek in this setting. Definitely recommend doing a full album review on this one. Itâs a certified banger and will keep you smiling from start to finish
Yesterday I was watching one of your videos, I think it was Goldfinger. I was thinking "hey, he should react to The Suicide Machines one day". I wish it was Break The Glass, but this is gold too!
Our punk/ska band used to use the intro to this song to open some of our sets - would get the crowd hyped!
Genius idea, it's such an epic, accessible riff. It probably got everyone's head bobbing immediately (like it did mine!)
I remember being a kid in North Bay, Ontario...I was at the mall, in Zellers, and they had this kiosk that had like 10 cd's in it as a sampler demo thing, you could get a sample of like 10 seconds of a song from each band, and this song was on there... I remember having my mind blown, and just thinking...wow.....wow...this is so bloody rad
Yes! One of my favorite bands of all time, and this album has one of the best rhythm sections punk has ever seen. You MUST listen to the whole album and pay attention to all the great bass and drum parts. Plus, Jay is easily in my top 5 for punk vocalists. So versatile
This channel is absolutely punching me in the nostalgia. As a 43 year old this channel is basically reliving my teenage years spending night after night at First Avenue in Minneapolis watching The Suicide Machines, PennyWise, NOFX, Dinosaur Jr, Propaghandi, LagWagon, Goldfinger and so many more... I even completely blew my ACL out watching Primus there one night and had to be carried out. Fantastic picks. Might I suggest Skankin Pickle or Voodoo Glow Skulls since you seem to love fast punk/ska as future potential listens.
I don't know if that bass player, Royce, still has his studio in Detroit, but in the early 2000's a band I was in recorded at his place. I remember one of our idiot guitar players checking his guitar with the opening riff of Hey. Royce just sat there and waited. When the guy nervously laughed I remember Royce just saying "no, keep going play the whole song" of course the guy had no clue how to play the rest, but Royce was a very funny guy that could keep a straight face through anything he said. Good times and a great song/album.
I always really liked Royce. I interviewed him back in 2002 maybe when he was doing Blueprint 76 for my website. He has a small law firm in St. Clair Shores these days. My buddy plays in an Oi band and crosses paths with a lot of guys in that scene (Jay Navarro sang on a track on his album a while back). Royce was moving out of the area and my BIL got his old couch. It was referred to as his punk rock couch for a number of years. I think it might be his basement couch now.
@@leftofpunk that's funny about the couch. I know he was doing blueprint 76 when we recorded at his place. We had to cut one day short to go see them play some indie coffee shop.
I knew a dude who played drums for a band that recorded in Royce's studio. He had some pretty cool stories to tell about it.
â@@leftofpunkThat couch is long gone. I always enjoyed running into Royce when he was playing or bartending around Detroit. Haven't seen him in years, probably due to his practice.
Belvedere - Elephant March
Refused - Summerholiday vs Punkroutine
Satanic Surfers - Don't Fade Away
AVAIL and the Suicide Machines at Emo's in Austin, TX, is one of the best shows I have ever been to! I'm glad I got to see the Suicide Machines several times with the original lineup.
@SecretAgentBeans I was at that Descendents show, too! I also saw Rancid, Face to Face, Less Than Jake, the Impossibles, and a few other shows there also. Fun times!
If you want Goldfinger and good horns I suggest "Get What I Need" from their album the Knife. Mike Herrera from MxPx had taken over Bass for that album (and all following albums).
And donât forget Travis Barker on drums for that album
Derek Grant is such a beast.
Mark, this journey is absolutely nuts. You're basically going through every song or at least band I ever listened to growing up as both a person and a bassist.
But "Hey" is really a very special one. My naive self of 15 years of age just got hold of his first ever bass guitar and what better song to pick but "Hey" to try and figure out the bass line by ear.
I learned two things that day:
1) I had no idea what I got myself into, especially with this particular song.
2) The 3 must be a very important note to the 1 (figured out the difference between major and minor a couple of weeks later đ ).
I still have trouble playing the first fast part after the "metal" intro cleanly because it's just so fast. And that first day lies 26 years in the past!
I can't recommend enough checking out other albums by the Suicide Machines. They are such a versatile band whilst still being true to their own style. Their repertoire reaches anywhere from pop punk over ska to hardcore and back. Such an iconic band! đ
My band played with them like in 2004. Watched them a couple of times here in Puerto Rico. What a great group of guys. Jason was always very friendly and we chatted quite a lot during those days. Iâve lost contact with them through time but I hope everyone is doing well.
This is a crazy choice for a first Machines song to hear!
You need to do the Mad Caddies next! So many great songs, but "Monkeys" would be the obvious choice since you like the crazy changes.
Yes I think he would love âmonkeysâ! Iâm wearing my mad caddies T-shirt right now!
Against all authority is another ska punk band that leans heavier on the punk side of things that is a must listen
In my opinion the goat of all punk ska albums.
Derek was only 18 when he tracked these drums too
Jesus.
This record and their second album Battle Hymns are both crazy and so good. Battle Hymns adds that hardcore crossover you mentioned you like a lot more. Check it out!
Yes yes yes! One of my first intros to ska/punk. And âHeyâ is my fave on the album. Being from SE Michigan I love the support for my home boys
I'm so glad I found your channel. I hit walls on some songs and cant figure them out fully and you nail it all the time right on camera and it personally helps me out a ton.
One of my favorite records of all time. Banger the whole way through
For a fun tie to most of these reviews you've done, Destruction by definition was mixed by Jerry Finn. He also did mixing and production on albums for AFI, Alkaline trio, Jawbreaker, Rancid and on and on... Basically most of what you've reviewed, he had his hands on.
"Relying on his fingers and the Foto Flame Jazz's snarling rear pickup for his raw tone, Nunley infuses cheery major scales with pure punk 'tude on several Destruction tracks ... The 20 year-old Motor City native plies his band's debut release with confident, warp-speed grooves and jaw-dropping fills that bespeak a listening diet of equal parts Specials and Minor Threat." ~ Bass Player, Jan 1997 đ€
This whole album is great! Glad you finally got to experience the suicide machines!
Saw them live last year. They still bring it!
Skankin Pickle âroad zombieâ. Great repetitive riff with awesome horns
This whole album is perfection and their later albums are also really good.
Wow this brings back memories. 96â seeing Suicide Machines and Goldfinger @ Ziggys Winston Salem NC. Great show! Suicide Machines wow!
I'm going to keep saying it. Joe Gittleman from the Bosstones was one of the best bassists in ska, do Someday I Suppose.
My first punk show was them and Less Than Jake in 2000. I was hooked ever since. Say what you will about the best punk albums, this is in easily in my top 5. I might have to join your patreon if you do the whole album lol. Also, the opening quote, with that intro riff, thatâs why theyâre always labeled as âskacoreâ over just ska.
Gotta check out Inside/Outside!
I was fortunate to see Suicide Machines at 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis back in the mid/late 90s. Blue Meanies was one of the opening bands (and I think Marble from Mankato, MN). Around that same time I got to see Rudiments at The Java Joint in St Cloud, MN.
Highly recommend Blue Meanies and Rudiments!
They're coming back to Fine Line this fall!
This was the song and album that influenced my bass playing throughout high school. Thank you.
Nice!!
Suicide Machines rules. I saw them in 2019 with Goldfinger and Big D And The Kids Table. They put on a HELL of a show. They said that they were the punk rock portion of the evening.
Another one of my fav bandsđđ»đđ»đȘđ»âŠ.but this is definitely my favorite reviews because your reaction/analysis was epicâŠ.thanks Mark đđ»đ
Wow, thanks!
I just love watching you react to hearing these songs for the first time... Makes me wish I could hear them for the first time and experience the discovery and the pure joy they bring all over again!
took me right back to high school :D I saw them more than once back then, and my memory may be fuzzy, but I recall Derek singing on some of the songs even, good times :)
I'd love to see you do "Mad Caddies - I'm so alone" Great album and production!
The jam. My drum student asked me to learn this last week
I was so ready for you to be thrown off after the intro of the song and your face said it all. Amazing hahaha.
They just killed it in Denver! Love the channel man!
This album is the pinnacle of 90âs ska punk for me. Best punk rock drumming Iâve ever heard, and thereâs not one bad song on it.
I got so excited when I saw that you reviewed this! Seen them 6 or 7 times, but I remember hearing this song when it came out in â96 and I told my best friend âitâs like 5 songs in 1!â Second album has more short hard songs. Third album is a little poppy but good. Albums after that were mostly punk. Love them and they still do live shows here and there. Great band! Thanx!
I liked this video before i even hit play. The songs are amazing, but the mix and mastering on this album are top tier.
VANS in my head!
So glad you did this band and this song specifically this song was anthem at that point and time for me and my friends
This was the first band I discovered by myself after years of listening to the Punk bands my friends got me into. The hardcore intro was one of the elements that drew me in, as I was starting my journey towards Metal around the same time. I remember listening to the song "Break The Glass" with a friend when we got into a wreck. They hold a very dear place for me in my music journey. It's unfortunate this was their best album, as they kinda went downhill after this. Their third album sounds like a completely different band. But, on their second is one of my favorite covers, "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden". Anyway, glad you loved this track. I knew I had to check it out as soon as I could when I saw it pop up.
Destruction by Definition is such an amazing album. S.O.S. and No Face have some really fun bass lines. It's songs like these that make me a little sad that all my musician friends are Metalheads.
Check out No Face on Destruction by Definition. OR Check out High Anxiety off Match & Some Gasoline. Both still Suicide Machines! Great band!
iâm so incredibly jealous that you get to experience this for the first time.
OH man taking me back my Jr year of HS, 97-sittin in my Plymouth Reliant w/ this on cassette, I would put that opening riff on and BLAST it as a middle finger to all those poseur jocks walkin' around thinking they were cool in their Reel Big Fish shirts!
I saw them at Warped tour in 01 and the bass player kept saying he won a radio contest to play with the band.đ Been a huge fan since! This album rips front to back! đ€
Oh, hell yeah!!!! I've been listening to these guys since the late 90's. I just saw them about a month ago at Small's Bar in Hamtramck, and I'll be seeing them again at St. Andrew's Hall in September. It's good to be a Detroit suburbanite sometimes lol.
Awesome album, all bangers!!
Your reaction to this song is probably my new favorite video, surpassing âThe Declineâ and âBetrayed.â I couldnât stop smiling either.
This album is straight fire, no skip, just fun ! Break the Glass intro is also out of this world.
This album got me into punk rock! Such a great album.
I had goosebumps watching this, I loved watching your reaction. this is probably in my top 10 favourite songs of all time. My old band used to cover it too. So fun!
Their music is definitely not one style! Itâs not all like this, I like some of their heavier music but Iâm a sucker for ska . I really like their song âhigh anxietyâ and âdid you ever get a feeling of dread â
âNew girlâ is good too⊠they are all good!!!
YOU NEED TO DO the Lawrence Arms! NEBRASKA/what ti.e I Pensacola wings of gold on anyway from there live 10 year anniversary show!!
I was thinking what my favorite horn section from this era was.... MU330's "The Punisher/Downtown" would fit the bill for awesome horns, great bass, and some really "unexpected" turns and would follow "Hey" very well, or anything from "Chumps on Parade"
Dude Suicide Machines are so epic. Thier first album was soft rock, which was awesome. Then they went ska heavy, then they went to hard rock (a match and some gasoline). They have so many styles, and its all so amazing.... I've been trying to see these guys live forever, but without fail I'm always in the wrong city that night....
Sick album!!!
Hey. Love your videos. Perhaps others have mentioned this. I know you digged Derek Grants drumming on that Alk 3 song. Derek performs it great, but the drums on that album were done by Mike Felumlee. He was also drummer for The Smoking Popes (singing bass player) and Squirtgun. Maybe check out I Need You Around by the Popes. Have a great one.
They did a split album with another band you should check out, The Rudiments. There are a couple extra tracks with bands, like Link 80. The album is Skank for Brains. One of the best ska albums out there, period!
