➡️ I'm stoked to finally get to ‪@Propagandhiofficial‬! It was tough narrowing down which song to do because every song request was different, which is a sign I MUST check out more! "Failed Imagineer" from 2017's "Victory Lap" caught my eye in the comments, and I loved this band's take on tech metal with a really upbeat "punk" feel. I'm the most intrigued by their songwriting style: they really move along as a single unit and accent every vocal phrase, which makes even the verses sound like huge, impactful anthems. Bassist Todd Kowalski seamlessly weaves in and out of the sudden changes, truly gluing the song together with beautiful melodies using a rich, clean tone. I discuss the continuous interval jumps he accents phrases with, his use of chords, and break down the effectiveness of his bass solo and how it contrasts against the vocal lines near the end. The rich guitar orchestrations create a playground for Todd to be melodic, and it was done in such a luscious fashion. I wish the song had been a touch longer, because I really want to hear the full scope of Propagandhi's style!

Their song “Night Letters” is EXACTLY what you’re looking for in terms of contrast to this song to really show the depth of their discography. Good tempo/vibe changes and some absolutely killer riffs in a heavier almost prog-punk-hardcore I don’t even know what you’d call it lol. Also, for a bonus, it’s part of the small group of songs that Todd sings instead of Chris.
And maybe as a bonus, you could do a double and throw in “Hadron Collision” which is just a like 1 minute ripper that borders on thrash lol.

But as other commentors have noted, Prop has just gotten better and better over the years. 'Less Talk, More Rock' is one of my favorite albums ever, and while 'Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes' was a new shift in sonic style with Todd in the mix, 'Potemkin City Limits' is when they found a new gear and through to 'Victory Lap' have just been on another level. My two cents and all.

Propagandhi's my all time favorite band. The bassist was John K. Samson (The Weakerthans) for their first 2 Albums, when they were a lot closer to one of those kinda goofy skatepunk-bands. When Todd came in for their 3rd album "Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes", they became a lot more unique and technical in their style and sound and every follow-up is kind of a natural evolvement from it's predecessor. I think "Supporting Caste" is a fan favorite. I personally can not pick a favorite. It usually takes them 6-7 years to put out a new one, though. The singer and guitarist/main songwriter Chris Hannah is the most talented musician I can think of in that genre, and his lyrics are a poetic deep-dive into history and philosophy, requiring a lot of background knowledge to acurately interpret. Sorry...but I'm so enthusiastic about them. I'd recommend "Last will and testament" from supporting caste, which is a little different from their thrashier side with an incredibly melodic bassline, or "Purina hall of fame" from Today's empires, which is extremely straight forward.

The funny thing is... When Todd first joined the band, it was his first time playing bass. Before that he did vocals for a few other bands. I personally wouldn't consider him an outstanding bass player, but the fact that he started from almost zero and made his way up to being a pretty good bassist is respectable.

ps...you wanna feature a ripping bassist...check out Tomasz Sokolowski from the Swedish skatepunk band Satanic Surfers. He played on all the albums up to Going Nowhere Fast...the bass on Worn Out Words is insane. But I recommend starting with something off 666 Motor Inn...Soothing maybe. I'd go as far as calling him the lead musician in the band. They are right up there with Propagandhi as one of the best punk bands of alltime.

Their first couple of albums, “How to Clean Everything” and “Less Talk, More Rock”, in my opinion, were more straight punk, but you could hear the thrash and hardcore influences. When I first listened to “Todays Empire, Tomorrows Ashes” I really noticed the change in their sound. Much more hardcore and metal sounding. It’s like they became really serious, after the light- hearted first couple albums. “Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasil An” is the first track from “Todays empires, Tomorrows Ashes,” and it sets the tone for everything afterwards. The bass is good too!!
Another great video in your punk journey. It’s exciting to watch you listen to these songs for the first time!!

Man, your reading regarding “the band following the vocals” is PERFECT. I think this is one of the greatest attributes (among many others hehe) in Propagandhi. Most of their music does not have a chorus and the lyrics looks like a huge article, almost an “opera” feeling! I strongly recommend the song “CUT INTO THE EARTH”, you will love that particular aspect and the bass itself (it’s beautiful, really). Cheers from Brazil!

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched this video. One, because I love this song, and second, it’s so much fun watching you react to it. I’ve been trying to see if Todd was using a pick or not, and I was convinced that he was using fingers after you went back a watched that part again. Now I’m convinced he uses a pick the whole song, except for the little bass solo near the end. The couple times his right hand is shown, it looks like he’s picking, but when he’s playing with his fingers, during the (solo) you can see his pick in his mouth. Not sure why, but this became a mission for me because I wasn’t sure. Keep up the great work. These videos are fun!!

Wow! Great catch with the pick in the mouth. I’ve seen him play that solo so many times I was convinced he was a finger player but your comment got me to go watch two live performances and you’re exactly right. He played the song with a pick and switched to fingers for the solo.

Dude thank you for finally doing Propagandhi!! I knew you would like them. Okay, so you asked if they have a portion of their discography that has them executing heaviness? YES! The album called "Supporting Caste" is very heavy and thrashy. Specifically, I recommend checking out "Tertium non datur" from that album.
Edit: as others have mentioned, Failed States is perhaps their heaviest album, but it's maybe not as technical as Supporting Caste.

Propagandhi's my #1 band of all time, love a band that doesn't get caught up in genre trappings and just makes the music they want to make. Their original bassist was actually John K. Samson who went on to form The Weakerthans. Todd joined the band for their third full length, around the same time they were looking to break away from their pop-punk counterparts and incorporate more of their metal influences. Their discography is all over the place, I highly recommend a deep dive for anyone curious!

Propaghandi is a lot like AFI in the sense that they’ve gone through major changes in every album. Todd (lead singer guitarist) has always been “better” than his contemporaries. He never really went straight power cords, even in their debut “how to clean everything”
They’ve progressively became much more technical, moving farther from punk into thrash. I never listened to this album, but I feel like this song is likely a more easy going outlier from much more intense instrumentalism.
I would never not call them a punk band though, Todd is easily the most punk dude out there. Never backed away from the heart of a political idealist. Love this band. Never felt the bass player was much to write home about though 🤔
