I think Rima Te Wiata is the best Buttercup I have had the pleasure to watch. When she sings this with David Gould they are both brilliant, just brilliant. 👏👏🤗🤗😘😘
"Captain's Log" LOL... If Gilbert and Sullivan were alive today it would've been called "HMS Enterprise" for sure, just for that extra pun... musical and comedic geniuses the pair of them!
@MadFranandfriends How nice of you to post such an observance. And the eclectic and flexible Gilbert, I'm sure, would have approved. "It works" is a theatrical commonality and often surprises the creative folk.
David Gould has a face of a lady killer and the voice of an angel. So deep and smooth, I keep reading reviews saying he's one toned and dull but I swear I could listen to him for hours. I like the 1997 movie for Buttercup though personally
Omg, I swore I recognized it from somewhere but for the life of me could not figure it out for the life of me. All of these years after you made this comment it has still been extremely helpful, thank you!
Hmm, I couldn't help noticing how Buttercup lowered her tone of voice when she said "I'd fancy a smile before I go". Is it just me, or does her tone sound seductive at that point? Anyway, great scene and music, and Buttercup seems especially hot in this one.
@lskarin It's like I always say, "Gilbert and Sullivan repeat themselves in the way the music sounds. Sometimes you can even find the exact same lyrics."
Rima has a much better singing Voice than Amanda. I'm not saying this as an NZer myself but my husband is not very fond of Musicals & very much objects to what I watch/listen to but said that she was way much better. Ever since seeing the musical on screen in 1994 I've Been very fond of David Gould Both singing & Acting.

This is the best buttercup ever!
I like Amanda Muggleton as Buttercup but Rima effortlessly changes her voice to suit the moment. Plus one lovely acting. Top job.
Rima is an awesome actress/singer!
If only I had a velvety bass like him 😔
@lskarin Oh I love it! I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this the first time.. WIsh I knew what the second bit was though.

That is a real captain :D
Oooh that bass!
Damn...I would've gone for Buttercup in this version.

@ The first bit is an arranged version of 'oh foolish fay' from Iolanthe, not sure what the second bit is! Works in a weird way.

Omg how fit and buff is this captain///???
@McJesus007 yup, sounds like he's doing it almost a fourth lower than written. I suppose it is hard to find a baritone with a proper high A...

@zetabyte99 Because he is going to have a bath and most smart captains wore just the basics in the bathroom, kind of like most of us nowadays.
You can get them from the Essgee website, but it's not this exact version. The DVD has Amanda Muggleton as Buttercup.
is the full production available on video?
You mightve found it by now but yes. Just search for it and you'll find it
Where can I find the full show? I'm in the US and the only DVDs I can find are region 2 only..
You can now get a digital download at essgee.com.au.
why does the captain look like a crewman?
tight red pants?! Am I blind or something? Whos pants are you talking about?

Sorry, but I think Amanda was much better than Rima
