  • This Phenix M1 bass fishing rod is a ML powered rod that fills a void in my current bass fishing rod arsenal. This video is an unboxing and quick take on how I plan to use this rod in my current arsenal. Medium and medium light bass rods are less common but still fill a void for anglers that want to use a baitcaster for lures and presentations that would typically utilize a spinning rod and reel. BFS is one thing Bass Finesse just might be another...

The Phenix M1 rods are good rods, but they are not great. The really supple action of them, which tends to be the case limits their versatility, but they make great technique specific rods. These rods are really sensitive which is a plus partly due to the bare handle on the ass of the rod. It would a good concept by Phenix rods that actually works. So this rod is really light, very well balanced, and has great quality silky smooth guides. Speaking of guides; they are bit to small, especially on the spinning rods. You have to be really cautious about the way you tie leaders if you are going to use them with this rod. The rods have a really nice action, but its a supple action making it overrated in terms of power. So if you need a rod in medium, get a medium/heavy if you going the M1 route. I really wish Phoenix had gone with a better quality reel seat such as a fuji. I do not like the reel seat on this rod. I also wish they had extended the cork up the blank at least a few inches.
I like Phenix rods though their rods are very technique specific, and you need to choose them carefully. You really aren't going to find a good general purpose rod in any of Phoenix line up. Id look over at Dobyns for that. This M1 rod had the potential to be an excellent rod, but Phoenix just missed the mark on it. I think its still a good rod for its price point of around 185, but Id only buy it for technique specific applications.

Loved the break down of this video. Exact kind of thinking when I'm looking into my next rod purchase. Happen to be buying it for a 17 Scorpion DC as well... Any updates on how it fishes?

I was pleasantly surprised. For the price I expected something heavier. It is a feather. The ML power is VERY misleading. I would call it a true Medium and even more responsive than some of my Megabass spinning rod mediums.I'm actually disappointed I didn't invest in more these years ago.

Thanks for the review. Currently looking at this rod for fishing small creeks with little lures for some trout and smallmouth and Ned rigs from the bank. Thoughts on its uses for those?

Absolutely! Thats how I use it. Think of it as a Medium Power Fast Action Spinning rod. I use 10lb. line. I totally wade creeks for little smallmouth with this setup.

Do you think this falls more towards a medium rod from other companies? Looking to see if this rod would be good throwing a 1/2 oz jerkbait.

So basically this rod is a bfs rod? I might pick one up from a guy around my city. He’s selling it for 50$. Maybe use it for crappie or some. What you think?

NOT a BFS rod in the trout magnet sense. Think of it as a Medium/ML spinning rod in baitcaster form. Not a Medium Light as Phenix states... it is certainly not a Light or Ultralight. If you love to throw lightweight or weightless BASS lures on a baitcaster... GO ALL IN not this rod. The more I use it the more I think Phenix is an amazing offering from a US company.

I have been using feathers and m1’s for awhile now and for the money their quality is up there with 3-400$ rods. Just another point to people that don’t know about that handle and purpose one of the biggest things I’ve noticed that I can’t use another rod now for is jerkbaits in the cold. It’s so nice fishing a jerk in jackets and not having handle hit your clothes 100 times biggest selling point imo I think! And reason for this is if someone would have explained that to me earlier I wouldn’t have hesitated.

@@funkofan4203 I’ve noticed that too!! I love that about it! Especially since I’m not really tall too. It works perfectly in my favor.
