MTB
XC mtb
My bike. it's a cx bike. Adventure is not race. Adventure is riding for fun. You both failed with this. Even if you enjoyed it, u still didn't enjoy scenery enough.
Definitely xc hardtail
Fatbike. Gets over everything.
There needs to be a full challenge with everyone from GMBN and GCN (Maybe even the GTN and EMBN guys). Just a week long series of summer madness
That sounds like carnage!
itll be like topgear/grand tour but with bikes. sounds fun. hope it gets green lit and becomes successful.
@@robest334 that would be amazing, from the road climbs of italy to the mountains of chile and everything in between, would love to see hank doing a urban downhill (on a proper DH bike)
With different types of bikes.
right, like an Olympics type of event done over several weeks. of course jpow would be left out in the current situation unless you come up with a way to do it covid isolation style, where you come up with challenges that each person can do alone wherever they are. the question is, do you keep each presenter on the bike of their discipline, do you take them out of their element and give them challenges on each kind of bike. personally I like the second option, especially since I know some of the presenters don't limit themselves to one discipline
These two together should make for a memorable show.
Same
They just did!
czcams.com/video/_bvaJva5az0/video.html
agreed. they should do more videos with richard and hank!
There is only one Best Bike For Adventure, and it is... the bike you have! đ
100% true!
Very nice.
What if I have more than one bike
Im watching gcn without a bike hahahahaa sadded
I Agree
Didn't ya just know Hank would end up taking a dip regardless! đ
what a sporting guy!
czcams.com/video/_bvaJva5az0/video.html
I'm not sure that the "challenge" proved anything we didn't know already. The best part was Richard and Hank sharing a beer in the stream - you can have fun cycling on pretty much anything.
czcams.com/video/_bvaJva5az0/video.html
Still remember the guy who said the best bike is the one you ride all the time. Would have been interested to see how a lightweight XC bike would have fared as well, as I don't think there is massive difference between some of them and the gravel.
@@jonboyjon1976 Yep. That would be interesting - especially (at least for me) on a longer ride. It's jolly good to know that the gravel bike is faster on a short stretch of tarmac, but what I'm really interested in is whether the advantage is sustained or increased over a longer riding distance of 20-40 miles - and whether a XC bike is able to keep up. I "think" I know the answer, but it would be nice to see it for real!
@@dlevi67 would be fun to see them in a real gravel race, Hank with the gravel and Rich with a XC bike. (they did something like that before, when Si (on a cyclocross bike) competed against Neil in a XC race...)
@@jonboyjon1976 not just a lightweight XC bike but also a big clearance gravel bike like an open wide with 27.5 x 2.4 XC tires on it
I enjoy watching Hank's contagious positive energy, vibes, and passion for cycling.
For me Hank is the man. He is a great presenter. Always game and ready for anything.
Hank definitely seems to have the right outlook on things. Always up for a challenge and finds the fun in everything. Well done, very enjoyable to watch! Wish I still had that child-like enthusiasm, donât ever lose it!
Didnât really prove anything other than what a great time you can have riding bikes. An absolute joy to watch. Great pairing of presenters. Fantastic job guys!
Next round: same bikes, same presenter. Bike swap!
After riding mtn on gravel and road trails for years, the change to a gravel bike has been phenomenal. I easily get an extra 5 mph in speed just due to the gearing (and a little more aero). I am too much of a chicken to take steep downhill stuff anyway.
no one cares about how fast you do a route. itâs about having a good all rounder that can tackle everything instead of compromising the route because the bike isnât capable and all you care about is strava times
@@umtomtom "All-rounder" can mean different things. I've owned mountain bikes since childhood, but as soon as I started cycling more seriously last year the deficiencies on smooth surfaces (slow) and long rides (numb hands/wrists) became all too apparent. At the same time, I didn't want to give up disc brakes, stable handling and ride comfort on the many (often rough) gravel roads where I live.
A gravel bike was the ideal solution - and even better, a second set of wheels with some narrower road-oriented tires essentially gives me 2 bikes in 1 (gravel and road). I've never uploaded to Strava, but it's impossible to deny the satisfaction that comes from going significantly faster for the same effort. If I want to go offroad, I still have an older hardtail - but for everything else the gravel bike is simply better.
Significantly faster means you win about 10 minutes for one hour ride on a good surface. It means nothing if you arenât going in a competition with time measurement. The faster you go with poor control drop bars the less safe is your trip. While on a hardtail MTB is safer and more stable, also more comfortable because front suspension and thicker tires. Also MTB slightly more upright position allows you to observe and enjoy surroundings more.
@@tongotongo3143I think you were on the wrong channel. And have you ridden a gravel bike?
Good fun, boys. I knew hank couldn't stay out of the water whether he won or not. He truly is a human puppy.
The on screen chemistry with these two is hugely entertaining! More of these vids please guys!
Shoutout to the graphics team. The challenge pics look great!
Can bag makers finally make a under-saddle bag that is not weaving like a scrotum in the wind. Thank you.
Just like fat-tail sheep
I havenât even watched this yet and I know that Hank is going to ride through a river without testing the depth đđ
well he DID end up in a river
Remind me, which video was that from again?
@@avalsirithanawat1772 the king alfred road?
Rich did the honorable part here, saving his beer when going under water! A true hero haha
We need more Hank and Richard videos!! Great duo, great enthusiasm (also Hank being a great sport for hopping in a wicked cold stream, the best part of the video for sure!).
This video was not about which bike stacks up to which terrain, it was about having an adventure and a blast with your mates. I call it a draw. Video is a winner.
That loose saddle bag on the dropper post bugs me so much :/
Great video!
Thanks for a great video in wonderful Wales - with pouring rain and sunshine alternating - perfect!
Love the GMBN and GCN collaboration videos!!! A great pairing of presenters too. More please.
Alright, I see you Hank - somebodyâs not skipping ab day
This was a great episode! Thanks Hank! Thanks Rich! For me, a gravel bike is the most versatile and I have one for commuting and madventures.
@ 8:01 Thatâs the noisiest bike I have ever heard on GCN. đłđ Time for another bike cleaning tutorial, Hank!
Really digging the GCN / GMBN cross over videos!
J Pow wouldâve destroyed that off road climb
Would have been 5-0 if J-Pow did it
The same if Alex did it as well. Have you looked at his record.
39 seconds is not a climb...
Love these crossover videos!! Quality stuff!!
My favorite GCN video of all time. That looked really fun.
Hank: I won! Jumps in the freezing stream anyway.
The Golden Retriever and the Birddog...
Love the cross-channel collaboration!
That was so much fun to watch! You both actually dipped in all the way - if I could give more than one kudo I would!!
Love how you are having fun. It's not even a competition... Great video, guys !
why wasn't a hard tail XC bike used as the MTB?
Yep thought the same. With good suspension they're not gonna be that different tho as the all mountain one he used basically locks up most of the sus on a flat road
beat me to it ..hard tail xc , for trail and gravel , ok on road
yeah proper XC hard tail gonna be better for touring
The clue is the channel it has been posted on. Bias
@@phillee9651 nope. Bad for really gnarly trails. Perfect for easy forest roads. Okay for gravel. Sucks on roads
Cracking video, just one major flaw... You know Hank has never been to Iceland in his life đ
Waitrose frozen section, minimum..
czcams.com/video/_bvaJva5az0/video.html
Instantly one of my favorite episodes!
okay, I LOVE these two together~! more of this!!!
Entertaining đ. Gravel bike does everything I will do đ.
I Just own Road and mountain Bikes, but I think I should give gravel bikes a try!
Definitely a place for them Max, so long as you have appropriate routes near by
Yessir you should! they're great!
yeah done MTB for years giving road a chance now
but still miss my MTB
The wifes going to kill you xD
@@BikesKomsCRO I don't have one yet! I should better hurry up then đ
Another lockdown and this video had me grinning from ear to ear. Just what I needed. This was fantastic, thanks, gang. Can't wait for my new eMTB to arrive so I can have some fun. The weather is a bit much for the road bike. Here's to some weight loss and fun to wipe away the horrid 10 months we've just had. Cheers đșđșđ„đ„
Love to see two dudes just havin a good time in the woods
Not really a gravel or mtb fan but this has to be one of the best videos of the year. If it wasn't for Hank the gravel bike would have lost all of the challenges. đ€Łđ€Ł
Loving Hank's savage dig at Ollie & Si's noodle-like climber physiques - perhaps Ollie should look to Hank for some running lessons!
Best video seen in a while! Truly funny and interesting at the same time!
That looked like good fun. Respect for both going in that stream.
Well done brilliant video gcn .đkeep up the good work nice bickes
the only thing that I can focus on in this video is how loose and swingy those seatbags are! it is such a better ride if you tighten them up so that they don't swing!
These two great chemistry, well done guys đđŸ
It is always a pleasure watching Hank "shred" Offroad đ€©
Hats off to you two! Great viewing!
Gotta love Rich's Nukeproof banana bibs! Great video as always, and Hank certainly does keep that enthusiasm and adventurousness over the years!
Absolutely Brilliant!!!! After a 3 month wait for my 2021 Trek Roscoe 6 to arrive, it has finally been built and picked up! Looking forward to my new MTB adventure (yeah former road guy and have never done MTB).. Great video guys!!!
This is a really interesting question and although I loved the video (really entertaining, fun and probably what you were aiming for to keep your audience happy) it did nothing to answer the question really.
What about a decent 100mm travel hardtail with relatively skinny tyres vs. a gravel bike?
As someone who does a lot of bikepacking on a hardtail I'm one of a large number of riders in a substantial market segment ready to be converted to a Gravel Bike...but, only if someone can answer the question, which is really better over a sensible selection of real bikepacking terrain...Gravel Bike or MTB...'nother film anyone?
love the video, and those two are just hilarious in their epicness,.. but why is time the factor? i cant be the only one thinking speed is the least important factor on an adventure ride?
A memorable video for sure. One of the best IMHO.
This is a brilliant video, cheers guys đ»đđ
Only type of terrain I'm having problems after switching to gravel is sand, everything else is same or better
yeah even on 40s at low pressure sand is tough
Sand is an issue on MTB too, unless you run knobby tires. I like to run fast rolling tyres on my hardtail and mostly walk on sand.
Conclusion: The Best Bike For An Adventure is... hardtail.
With semislicks.
Exactly! Why choose that mountain bike, it's like super down hill... He should have picked a trail hard tail, that'd totally won. Also probably a lot more comfortable in hard terrain than a gravel bike
29er carbon xc/trail
Definitely hardtail of full rigid mtb
A simple sub 1k hard tail would had done better that any 10k gravel bike in a similar advantage/race if all the sections are done continously. ..
This video takes me back to a rainy summer bikepacking loop I took my partner on this summer; think Steamboat CO's "Gravel Gruel" plus the "Wyoming Trail". I think y'all nailed it with the gear ratio and handling disparities, but looking at storage choices (and weight distribution), rider gear to accommodate terrain outliers, and how taking in an epic view with a nip of whiskey or bit of legal herbs also makes the differences between his gravel bike and my hardtail somewhat irrelevant. Except for maybe his multiple flats, and how he ate all my snacks.
man such a fun video. props for Hank and Richard!
The cable routing on that hoverbar gives me OCD twitches :-)
lock out that suspension on the "smooth" road... what I would choose in the weather...the MTB clothes
I'd love to see you guys again sometime. I loved it!!!
The vibes between these two were just nothing short of awesome!
Awesome video!! a hardtail would have made a good competition, lighter than full suspension but more capable than the gravel in most terrain!
Agreed. Would have been more realistic using a hardtail with narrower tires and adventure bars.
GCN's idea of an adventure always ends up in a race when the most important thing on these road trips are comfort and utility.
It's just a bit of fun đ€·đœââïž There's a ton of cycling channels out there doing straight, serious reviews if that's your bag
Haha great stuff guys, just what was needed today.
That was good. What do these guys have for breakfast! Love their energy.
"What would you take on an adventure?" Is Hank an option...? ;)
I don't own or do MTB but shouldn't Rich have locked the front suspension for the road and gravel sections?
my thoughts exactly đ
unfortunately for him you can't lock out the fork he is running :)
I got the talas 36 on my sc nomad, just like OP said, can't lock it, all i can do is set the LSR and HSR to max and make it stiffer on climbs
Looks like guys had a lot of fun while filming it. And I had a lot of fun watching. Perfect =)
Great Video! You two should do more videos together! One of my favorites this year!!
Man I want to get into cycling. Iâm searching for a road bike
Good luck man took me 2 months to buy my mtb
I have a gravel bike with 38mm tyres for off road, and a second set of wheels with 28mm if I know i'm just doing roads.
That Welsh weather though; sun shining one moment, downpour the next 10 minutes, then the sun was out again, and repeat.
one of the best videos you lot ever made. +1 for gravel bike :) love from vancouver
That was a absolutely brilliant, Hank you are a star âïž
I donât really believe that hank averaged just 20km/h on that road section
Me neither, I averaged 24km/h on a Hard Tail MTB on a paved path for 10km.. With stops and up and down
It's an uphill course: A gain of 186 m over 7.9 km, or about 2.4% (not including undulations). Managing 20 km/h would be about the same as 32 km/h with no elevation gain.
Get a XC with lighter suspensions (or even a hard tail) and the gravel wouldnÂŽt look so good.
It looks fine.
Or get a gravel bike with wider tires
Luv'd this video, you guys are crazy fun, each bike has it's benefits. For my riding preferences I'd pick the gravel but mountain bikes are also fantastic.
brilliant, funny, and enjoyable vid. Thanks guys
I know this has absolutely ZERO links to this video - but where the heck is Lastie????
'His legs are going round at a cadence of knots' - Huh?
Naughts maybe? As in 0s? He was spinning like crazy so maybe he was implying more than one zero after the number?
Knots = nautical miles (per hour). We are a seafaring nation, we love the water!
@@matthewlemin5077 still makes absolutely no sense
Probably from: dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/at-a-rate-of-knots
@@xcoderules well done, yes it just means something going at a high speed, or high rate of knots per hour. A knot is a nautical mile, a weird old unit roughly 15% longer than a standard mile.
Well done both of you, that stream must have been FFFFcold! âïžâïžâïž
This was an absolute joy to watch!
Why didn't rich lock his front suspension in round 1?
And why a full suspension a hardtail would have been sufficient.
Conclusion - Gravel bike can't take place of a MTB
I just wish Hank would add more enthusiasm ;)
Know what you mean. He's so bloody serious... đ

Rich had a lot more rain to contend with on that one gravel stage. Anyone else think hank was running a bit too high pressure for 40's while being tubeless? But, seriously, gents - this was excellent. Thank you for the holiday entertainment!
