    The duo is super tempting. That extra small display would allow me to present during zoom calls while still seeing people's faces, so this opens up the ability to do my job without being tethered to my home office, which is very enticing

    Give me 2 screens all day!
    I was one of those people who did go out and get it last year, but I did push the boat out and spect the i9 processor, with as much ram they could squeeze in it, so I like the speed and performance it brings to the table.
    The duo is an awesome laptop....!

    I'd go with the Zenbook Pro 16X. The screen is a bit bigger than I'm used to, but it's the ultimate version of what I have now ( Zenbook 15 U534).
    The Duo would be incredible for video editing, but I'd be devastated if anything happened to that keyboard screen.

    I want a laptop without a numeric keypad or any gimmicks on the wrist rests. I think Asus is doing a great job to be innovative, which I like a lot. The main issue is that they are not able to penetrate the North American market because of small build issues. It is going to be tough to defeat Dell and Lenovo in this market of office production machines.

Now, I am thinking of upgrading my laptop, I am a researcher, so I do a bit of photo editing, illustration, running programs like python, sometime video editing, and a lot of browsing. Can you suggest a laptop under $1200? Is MacBook Air m1 good? or should I wait for M2?

  • @AugustSchunk
    @AugustSchunk Pƙed 2 lety +10

    Thanks for the quick review of these machines.
    These are all beautiful. I have a early Zenbook Duo (non-pro) and love it. Mine doesn't have the number pad in the touchpad but it does everything else I need it to do.
    I believe Asus is the most innovative company in the laptop market. So many of their designs are both aesthetically appealing and functional. I would recommend Asus to anyone looking for a Windows laptop.

    • @AugustSchunk
      @AugustSchunk Pƙed 2 lety

      @Colin Nardo Definitely. I will say that if you are going to be writing code or doing anything else that requires a number pad, I would try to get the pro model. I have an external number pad that I seldom carry around with me and I occasionally wish my laptop had it built in.
      You will have to get used to the second display. Sometimes a program or tool panel will open on this second display and you might not realize it is there.

      If you actually don't need the dGPU (Nvidia dedicated graphics card), ASUS also has a cheaper variant of the Vivobook Pro series minus the GPU power.
      It's called "VivoBook S", comes in 14, 15 and 16" sizes, and uses the same chassis and OLED display. They are better suited for programming thanks to quieter fan noise, less heat, and longer battery life.

    I bought last years zenbook duo, but don't really under the 'feeling sorry for' comment. At least, compared to last years 14 inch model (non pro), this is a totally different product. Not really even in the same price bracket.
    And there are some reasons to prefer last years model (for example, LCD for no burn in, both displays are matte for consistency, and USBC charging instead of these barrel ports which in my experience have a much higher failure rate over time).
    Of course if money was no object I would love to get an upgrade. But as it is, last years model is still a great laptop that will serve me well for a long time.

    It's shame that secondary screen isn't OLED, though they would have to deal with the reflections. I'm wondering whether they have improved viewing angles (not only by lifting it up), because in UX482 they are terrible. What's the brightness of the secondary screen? I've seen in the videos 500-600?
    I also hope they worked with some app developers to make apps more suitable for secondary screen - there are apps like Spotify (which is one oh the most obvious app to use with the secondary screen) that have min height, so the media bar actually doesn't fit.
    I am really not into 3050 Ti and i9 - i'd rather go for Xe graphics and i7, as I assume this could double the battery performance. I might upgrade...

    • @KasztanTS
      @KasztanTS Pƙed 2 lety +2

      Ok, since the vertical resolution is up to 865px from 515px, the the apps should be fine. According to the official specs, which are now up, it's 500 nits 120hz and apparently still dci-p3 still around 97%. So if they have improved viewing angels just a little bit, it should finally do the job.
      So only if there will be a configuration without 3050 ti and with i7 instead of i9 - RAM is way more important for multitasking. No dedicated graphics and i9 = 2x battery performance

    Hi..I want to know that refresh rate does really matters to .2 ms response time for OLED

  • @Gamma2Tech
    @Gamma2Tech Pƙed 2 lety

    If only the Zenbook Pro 16X had the higher refresh... Just kills the vide of that unit and makes the Vivobook more favorable at that point...

    Thanks Tom - it's all a bit blah, blah, blah at the moment because I already have a 2020 Zenbook 14" that I was very pleased with - especially the wonderfully whizzy 475GB SSD, WHICH FAILED AT 15months! So, yes, they look & sound good, but that experience kinda rocks your confidence in the company! Certainly the quality was good enough to match my MacBookPro & the rest was in the process of wrenching me away from an Apple renewal - theirs has lasted me almost 7 years! So now I keep an eye on the updates but temper these reviews with a bit of Real World Reality, b ut thanks again.

    Hello, is it a good choice for around 8 hours daily use? Working from home and mainly use ms office, do you think oled screen will be a potential issue in the long run? Thanks for your advice.

    • @ksh6
      @ksh6 Pƙed 2 lety +3

      OLED is so awesome that even if it end up having some issues in the future, lets say 3 years from now, then it would be totally worth it paying $200 for a new screen replacement. Your eyes are way more valuable than that.
      It is just too good of a tech to be worried of a 15% potential cost increase.

    EDIT: After the whole video, I'm like straight up stuck between the last two, but actually leaning towards the Duo. I thought the screen would be gimmicky, but it looks like it would be a godsend with editing, illustration (checking colors), and note taking!
