I have a service dog (10 yo Mastador) who is training her replacement (1 yo Airedale).
I am now cancelling all appointments after 9 am, if they can't be telehealth, because by 10:30 am it's already too hot for the dogs to get out of the car to get inside.
Someone told me to get the dog shoes, and I had to explain that dog paws are the only place dogs sweat. Covering their paws with shoes speeds up overheating and heat stroke ....

It's been said, but it bears repeating:
    1. NEVER leave children or pets in a car. In this heat, even with a window cracked, the temp can clear 160+F very quickly, and it will cook your loved ones alive.
    2. When you put on your shoes to take your pet for a walk, bear in mind that if YOU don't like walking on hot tar in your bare feet, your furry friend probably won't care for it either.

Even on 'nice' days, say in the 80s, a closed car can reach dangerous temperatures in under an hour. Leave your pets and/or children home. Too many children and pets have died or been injured because the 'responsible' adult went inside 'for a minute' and didn't come out in time.

You probably can't rely on drinking tap water either, which would likely be contaminated by the release of human waste into the waters due to massive flooding. So tell me - what happens when the stores run out of bottled water, if the stores are even open without power available to at least 2.5 million Texans. And even if water supplies are available, what if you can't afford to keep buying bottled water, or you can't get to a store (if open)? What is Governor Abbott doing about making sure people have free and adequate drinking supplies while the power continues to be out so pumps can't clear out the polluted flood waters?

Eugene and Corvallis are more proactive than some places and always have cooling shelters for the homeless during the summer and heating centers during winter.
Unfortunately, wild animals aren't used to this heat, either, and suffer terribly, so it helps to put fresh clean cool water out for them. I've fed wild birds at patio feeders for about a decade and put out extra H20 when it's hot (or freezing). The water attracts bugs, too -- I get a lot of honey bees and wasps at the shallower water bowls.

Soaking moisture-wicking fabric in water and wrapping it around my head has been my #1 method, but I've also recently started using an evaporative cooling vest that makes a huge difference. I need to "recharge" the headscarf with water every 2-4 hours, but the vest can stay wet and cool me for much longer. As Beau has pointed out on previous episodes, you can also soak your feet in cold water. I highly recommend these methods, as they don't require that much water to work, so even when you don't have municipal water, you can use them without cutting into your drinking water supply too much.

Also, freeze bottles of water - one placed at the nape of your neck or the base of your spine really helps to cool you. (16 oz plastic soda bottles are perfect for this). Just keep refreezing them & using them over & over. Make sure the top is screwed on tight to avoid leakage. Also, I keep a pack of baby wipes chilling in my refrigerator.
