Crouchy is really honest and it shows just how to be a proper professional in this game.. always had a bit of a soft spot for crouchy coz he's so down to earth and he never acts entitled.

Rafa reached 2 Champions League finals in 3 years without a big budget.
Liverpool were massively over achieving during that period.
Pep has reached one final in like 6 years with City and has spent a billion on players.
Like 6 yrs ? What does that mean ? It’s either six or not !
@@Mod-rw9cw it means that he thinks it’s 6 but he may be wrong and hasn’t checked.
It's very difficult to reach a champions league final
Benetiz lost us that final. As soon as crouchy came on we scored. Kuyt up top alone was never going to help us beat ac Milan in the final. Especially with the players they had back then
Agree, felt unnecessary especially as he was top goal scorer in the CL
Agree Benitez owes Gerrard a few trophies. Gerrard carried him tbh
Mascherano had Kaka in his pocket; soon as he brought Mascherano off Kaka picked the ball up in space and set up their second.
@@gerardwilliams4550 let’s cut him some slack tho, a lot of the reasons we were where we were was due to Rafa. Yh he made mistakes but we weren’t as strong as other teams and we won trophies through sheer will. Although he should be held accountable especially for the 07’ CL final
@@zub41r75 yes Gerrard definitely did carry Rafa. Benitez never tried to improve the squad as much as he should have to a title winning squad
Milan were definitely not just 'there for the taking'; it included many of the Italian World Champions from 2006. Pirlo, Gattuso and Nesta were each in their prime in this era, Inzaghi was still very dangerous and effective on his day (although not quite in his prime), Seedorf was still in great form despite his age and Kaka was at the absolute peak of his powers. The major difference with 2005 is that in 2007 Milan were much more disciplined defensively; they were far less exposed at the back whenever they attacked. Their ultra-attacking instincts famously left them without adequate protection at the back, and prone to terrible collapses (Deportivo 2004, also semis against PSV in 2005).
Had they done what Crouch suggested and attacked Milan more they likely would have been beaten as badly as Man U in the semis; within 5 minutes of him coming on for a midfielder (Mascherano), Kaka was finally given space to dictate the game and played the pass that freed Inzaghi to score the decisive goal.
I liked Rafa, but he made strange decisions sometimes as Liverpool manager and that final was a huge missed opportunity.
He is an awful manager. Total conman. Failed everywhere.
Yeah, it sometimes feel like Rafa wants the spotlight on his genius and not go the common sense best route. He did many strange calls indeed.

But yeah great great great striker seriously everyone took the piss out of him but he scored and put the ball in the back of the net isn't that what strikers are payed and put as a striker to do score goals right 🤷♂️ so yeah as I say a legend 💯💯

He’s my favourite personality in football. Absolutely top bloke. Spot on, too, with his analysis. We won the CL we shouldn’t have in ‘05 and lost the one we should have won. Too negative from Rafa, in my opinion. They were a waning side and we played way better in ‘07.
I remember this as if it was yesterday- I was so very DISAPPOINTED when the team was announced and Crouch was not a starter, He was in red hot form at the time leading to the finals- I felt Liverpool could have WON that final!
Gerrard won Liverpool the final in 2005.
Rafa lost Liverpool the final in 2007.
Why would he drop a striker who'd scored 7 goals in 8 games to play defensive dinosaur football? 🦕🦖
Gerrard always carried Benitez like he carried Liverpool tbh. Rafa also cost them the PL in 08 with bad signings and bad sales. Selling Crouch and Keane left Liverpool weak up front.
The changes Rafa made tactically are what won 2005, not just Gerrard
No not really rafa messed up luckily keel got injured haman came on plus finan got injured Gerrard went right back and the rest is history. Rafa made some silly mistakes at time haman was a beast he changed the game and Made us defensively better in the 2nd half
Xabi alonso was the difference.
Maybe so they wouldn’t concede 3 goals in the first half like they did in 05? 🤔
Crouchy isn’t the only one who thought that when the team was picked. They were there for the taking but Rafa played it cautiously like a chess match and lost

Rafa's safety first approach is "one" of the reasons why Liverpool never won the PL. With 3 points for a win it pays to attack, attack, attack. Fergie fully understood that!
Never won it because people put faith in Garragher at the back.
Absolute nonsense that really needs to stop being repeated.
Rafa's Liverpool side scored the most goals in the PL (77) in the 2008/2009 season - the very season that they challenged for, and arguably should've won, the title. Rafa's Liverpool were clearly capable of playing attacking football, and often did so.
If he didn't win the PL, it's because he was never truly backed by Hicks & Gillette who, as we now know, nearly destroyed the club.
Honest man. Very rare quality nowadays in the media.
Yeah I remember seeing the line up before the game... I remember being just as gutted as crouch was... I think we would of won it if he had started... Rafa definitely lost us that final

Didnt he do it against Galatasary or someone in the Champion League too or am I remembering wrong... Off to google I go.
@@Kevakazii yep. Think he did one for Liverpool against Bolton at Anfield as well
He scored a great overhead kick for Pompey too.

We missed having an out and out striker during that game
This guy was so underrated, never got a fair crack of the whip in my opinion 🤔
Sounds like a really decent fella. And he played really well when he came on.
Crouchy was spot on felt the same benayoun was another who was treated badly by Benitez ...his fascination with kuyt was the reason he never won after that as he converted a goal scoring forward into a defensive striker
Nothing wrong with Kuyt. Never let the team down. Rafa always did his best for the club as well.
Maybe Crouch would have made the difference against the Italian but it was Dirk who got us the goal in that game.
Hindsight as they say is 20/20..
He is right...that Milan team was not what it was in 05'....Rafa just got it wrong...it happens.....strange because they beat Barcelona over two legs leading upto the final playing a great system with Gerrard in the 10 and Bellamy on the wing....for some reason Rafa didnt go with any pace...he bottled it a bit.
100% agree with him. Rafa ALWAYS bottled the big games and always promoted negative play abd not positive play.
It’s so ironic how the 2005 AC Milan team was so much better than Liverpool and they lost and how in 2007, Liverpool were better as Crouch said but they lost to Milan.
If Liverpool attacked them, Milan would have torn them apart. Liverpool were lucky in 2005, if we're honest, and the consolation goal (in 2007) was offside, anyway. Fast forward today, I think we see an amazing Liverpool team that is being underrated by everyone, I'm gobsmacked. This Milan team though, they're super young, they weren't ready for Anfield. Looking forward to the return game in Italy!
Very honest interview and I agree with him about the need to attack. Love Rafa but he was so cautious sometimes it would wind me up
Never seen crouchy so upset
Absolutely luv crouchy such a great personality, as a lfc fan I admit Liverpool treated him badly..
Ageing Milan team that had Kaka as the best player in the world, Pirlo who played another was at his best up until Euro 2012, Gattuso and Seedorf who were still very Solid and Pipo inzhagi who scored both the goals. Nesta Maldini and Cafu were old but very well kept and fit experienced players.
Milan of 2007 were far from there for the taking. They demolished Man United who were world class at the time and who won the UCL a year later.
Totally agree with Crouchy, they were there for the taking and Rafa messed that final up for us
He’s 100 percent right with everything he says here. Crouch and Robbie Keane are two strikers I felt didn’t get a fair shake from Rafa.
Crouch is absolutely right about this. At the time I remember being angry with Benitez selection. And we almost got back into it when Kewell and Crouch were brought on. Amazing to say that 😅. But it's true.
Real talk!!
I like that advert where Crouch is an user driver
Crouchy is bang on 100% with his summary of that moment. He was on form and Rafa made a mistake with his lineup for that match no question.
He got alot of things right at Liverpool as well.
Owen smirking as he thought to himself " No sympathy from me mate, I never got to play in a CL final for the mighty reds either"
Rafa got that call sooo wrong. Crouch should have started. Its similar to Guradiola changing his tactics for the 2021 final
Love Crouchy LFC legend
I love Crouchy and his personality. He might not have had a brilliant goal record at Liverpool but he served a purpose by being near 7 foot tall. If used correctly he would have scored many more goals. Liverpool still need a striker similar to his size Haaland :)
Lewandowski next season maybe 🥵👀

Crouch was so under rated it makes me sick

Spot on, crounchy. I felt the same, I really wish we went more offensive but Milan are a good team and at the time all those ageing players were still quality, ive always respect Milan since our 1st final. It’s sad to see how far they have fallen but hopefully they regain their European-super-club-status soon. CL isn’t the same without them.
I thought exactly the same that night in 2007. Our team was good, probably better than 2005. Crouch was really on fire that year. After he was put on he assisted Kuyt with the goal, but there weren't enough time to get another goal and catch Milan. It was such a waste, and it was Rafa's fault.
why at 0.30 secs does it look like Owen is just loving the fact that Crouch wasnt in the starting 11 LOL
I like Crouch. He is so honest, and modest. And he just seems like a normal person, not a celebrity. I wish more celebrities were like him (not that Carra and Gary aren't fun).
I love Rafa but he made a balls up of that team selection. They were terrified of Crouch when he came on and Bellamy was on the bench all game when the Milan defence were ancient, his pace would have gave them nightmares.
Always loved crouch even tho he played for liverpool.
0:50 ive heard of man management but that’s a weird way to sort things out
Top man. U can't but luv him
He should be glad he got to even play a small part. He mentioned Bellamy and Fowler and they didn’t get to play at all.
He scared 7 goals in 8 UCL matches that season, he should have started.
Couldn't agree more , he earned his place , scored some great goals in the run up and the eventual team gave the most lack lustre performance that never looked like it could win . I felt for him then , he was robbed .
I agree with crouchy. It was there for the taking. Milan didn't look like the 2005 team we beat. Rafa had days like this were he's tactics, substitute etc cost us especially when he's managerial career was coming to a end at Liverpool. Selling alonso, desperately trying to get Barry etc. Benitez sometimes was too clever for his own boots.
HE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED UP FRONT
100% agree with Crouchy
I think he would make a good manager , I hope he try’s some day
Nice to see a liverpool player spending time with those 2 guys from man utd. Ynwa crouchie.
0:30 Is Owen smirking here? 😤😤
So right on every point he makes.
Milan were there to be beaten.
Liverpool had the forwards to do it.
But step up Mr Benitez.
Played the one striker that wasn’t a great finisher.
And leaves out 3 others that are lethal.
If not for Gerrard he’d have lost the other final 5 or 6 nil as well.
Anyone see Owen laugh when Crouchy was first talking 😂
Benitez was a classic example of a manager who often tried to be too clever for his own good. He was prone to constant team rotation, eccentric tactics, bizarre substitutions, questionable man management, etc.
On the other hand, he did have a tendency to make good decisions in the transfer market. He had a sharp eye for talent, and brought a lot of great underrated players into Liverpool, assembling a strong squad without spending as much as Liverpool's main rivals.
I'm a Newcastle fan and I both adore Rafa, and also never want him anywhere near our club again haha. In some ways he's similar to Jose. Can't knock some of his successes, but I don't love the way his teams play football. Even moreso with Rafa
Top man crouchie 👍
He should have started!! I was fuming at the time
Letting your players know who will be playing an hour before the game does not sound like good management
Crouchy would have scored 4 and embarrassed maldini

Legend crouch
Rafa flooded the midfield because he took a gamble in Istanbul by not starting Hamann, only a miracle that night won us the trophy so he overcompensated in Athens. Remember thinking before KO Crouch had to start, Milan would've found him a real handful and such a shame he didnt stay longer at the club.
crouchy is right the squad does seem a bit weird, when he said kuyt was left upfront , bit strange
Crouchy what a legend
Crouchy definitely should've started that game. Pennant was whipping balls in for fun all we needed was the big man on the end of them crosses💯
We where on top most of that first half. Deflected goal ruined the plan. Pennant played well. Two lucky goals for Milan. Gerrard great chance one on one. But Bellamy should have got on and Fowler out the squad all together.
Lads I agree I have no idea why Pennant started that match, the guy was terrible for us
Rafa ‘overthinked’ that final, just as he did the first half of 2005. Still thanks for the 1 Champions league YNWA ❤️
Crouch the legend goal with robot dance.
Next season he was back stronger though
Crouch maybe deserved the start but at the end of the day it’s not like leaving out Owen or Gerrard is it. Rafa thought he can tactically defend for his life didn’t work.
That Milan was there for the taking that night and Crouch should have started. It would probably been to much for Milan to lose again, especially after Istanbul.
“I felt like”
Pete's right . We should have gone for it a bit more. Milan were ready for the taking.
Damn Owen is breaking the 4th wall
He shouldn't apologise for feeling bitter given the form he was in. Everything he said is right!
Milan's defenders spent all of Crouchy's (very extended) warm up glancing at him. They didn't want him to come on. Rafa didn't give him long enough on the pitch. He didn't get a lot wrong but that was a big mistake for me.
I totally agree with Crouch
