    Milan were definitely not just 'there for the taking'; it included many of the Italian World Champions from 2006. Pirlo, Gattuso and Nesta were each in their prime in this era, Inzaghi was still very dangerous and effective on his day (although not quite in his prime), Seedorf was still in great form despite his age and Kaka was at the absolute peak of his powers. The major difference with 2005 is that in 2007 Milan were much more disciplined defensively; they were far less exposed at the back whenever they attacked. Their ultra-attacking instincts famously left them without adequate protection at the back, and prone to terrible collapses (Deportivo 2004, also semis against PSV in 2005).
    Had they done what Crouch suggested and attacked Milan more they likely would have been beaten as badly as Man U in the semis; within 5 minutes of him coming on for a midfielder (Mascherano), Kaka was finally given space to dictate the game and played the pass that freed Inzaghi to score the decisive goal.

    Ageing Milan team that had Kaka as the best player in the world, Pirlo who played another was at his best up until Euro 2012, Gattuso and Seedorf who were still very Solid and Pipo inzhagi who scored both the goals. Nesta Maldini and Cafu were old but very well kept and fit experienced players.
    Milan of 2007 were far from there for the taking. They demolished Man United who were world class at the time and who won the UCL a year later.

    I love Crouchy and his personality. He might not have had a brilliant goal record at Liverpool but he served a purpose by being near 7 foot tall. If used correctly he would have scored many more goals. Liverpool still need a striker similar to his size Haaland :)

    Spot on, crounchy. I felt the same, I really wish we went more offensive but Milan are a good team and at the time all those ageing players were still quality, ive always respect Milan since our 1st final. It’s sad to see how far they have fallen but hopefully they regain their European-super-club-status soon. CL isn’t the same without them.

  • @benedictmanurung
    @benedictmanurung Před 2 lety

    I thought exactly the same that night in 2007. Our team was good, probably better than 2005. Crouch was really on fire that year. After he was put on he assisted Kuyt with the goal, but there weren't enough time to get another goal and catch Milan. It was such a waste, and it was Rafa's fault.

    I agree with crouchy. It was there for the taking. Milan didn't look like the 2005 team we beat. Rafa had days like this were he's tactics, substitute etc cost us especially when he's managerial career was coming to a end at Liverpool. Selling alonso, desperately trying to get Barry etc. Benitez sometimes was too clever for his own boots.

    So right on every point he makes.
    Milan were there to be beaten.
    Liverpool had the forwards to do it.
    But step up Mr Benitez.
    Played the one striker that wasn’t a great finisher.
    And leaves out 3 others that are lethal.
    If not for Gerrard he’d have lost the other final 5 or 6 nil as well.

    Benitez was a classic example of a manager who often tried to be too clever for his own good. He was prone to constant team rotation, eccentric tactics, bizarre substitutions, questionable man management, etc.
    On the other hand, he did have a tendency to make good decisions in the transfer market. He had a sharp eye for talent, and brought a lot of great underrated players into Liverpool, assembling a strong squad without spending as much as Liverpool's main rivals.

    Rafa flooded the midfield because he took a gamble in Istanbul by not starting Hamann, only a miracle that night won us the trophy so he overcompensated in Athens. Remember thinking before KO Crouch had to start, Milan would've found him a real handful and such a shame he didnt stay longer at the club.
