As a former D1 college pitcher (20 years ago) I called almost all my pitches IF me and the catcher weren't on the same page. I did it by adding to a "sign" with a quick swipe with my glove as I came set. Also had signs to change the location of the pitch. We had several systems including a completely different system with runners on 2nd. Then occasionally I'd get so pumped I'd straight yell "fastball" or give the universal sign (up flip with glove) or curveball (down flip) and let it fly! The batters would get so plssed off 😂. If the other team got mad enough to intentionally hit one of our batters, you better believe the first sign when we got back out on the field would be the middle finger, another "universal" sign for..... high and inside... right at his ear hole!

As a pitcher I had my own signs that my catcher would read. We would change them every inning for the basic pitches but the more complex pitches had the same call sign.

Yeah some of this stuff just sucks. It takes the humanity and teamwork out of the game. Next third base coaches will disappear because a manager can just tell them from the dugout. Umpires will disappear because computers can do that. But we forget the human part of the game is part of the game. Players overcoming and dealing with the physical limitations is part of the entertainment of the “game” here! I mean, eventually we’re just going to be sitting watching robots play each other and no one will care.

@@JohnMegaton2062but this isn’t even that tho, pitchers used to just shrug off pitches they didn’t want to throw, now they can communicate because they’re on a timer and have to be on the same page

Basset on the Jays does the same thing, because he has 7 pitches, and with the pitch clock there's not enough time for the catcher to cycle through all of them if he wants to throw a specific pitch.
