Every pitcher throws what they want, the catcher shows the signs and the pitchers either goes through with it or shakes their head asking for another until they get what they want. Only rookie pitchers 100% follow what the catchers wants.

As a former D1 college pitcher (20 years ago) I called almost all my pitches IF me and the catcher weren't on the same page. I did it by adding to a "sign" with a quick swipe with my glove as I came set. Also had signs to change the location of the pitch. We had several systems including a completely different system with runners on 2nd. Then occasionally I'd get so pumped I'd straight yell "fastball" or give the universal sign (up flip with glove) or curveball (down flip) and let it fly! The batters would get so plssed off 😂. If the other team got mad enough to intentionally hit one of our batters, you better believe the first sign when we got back out on the field would be the middle finger, another "universal" sign for..... high and inside... right at his ear hole!
I played catcher off and on (i was primarily right field) but both our catchers got injured. When doing my sentence behind the dish the pitchers loved me because i just set up and let them do whatever they wanted. Plus i was a big advocate of plunking dudes on purpose.
I mean, while it is a big change in the game, it’s not much different than Scherzer just shaking until he gets what he wants. It’s practically the same thing since the pitcher chooses what he likes, and a lot of the time is thinking the same way as their catcher

As an Australian who is used to just seeing someone bowl a cricket ball and the wicket keeper just reacts to whatever is bowled. This makes so much more sense. Your pitchers should be calling what kind of throw they think is needed.

It would make sense, unless you had played baseball a long time and knew how pitchers think (or not many times) and knew how their personalities are in general. They need balance. Let’s just say there’s a reason you don’t see many managers (I know ONE) who are pitchers. Most are not like Max Scherzer in their ability to process information, and Scherzer may not be able to either. I’ll be anxious to see how this goes over a full season.

This honestly makes more sense to me. The pitcher has the best sense of what kind of shot would be best against each batter, and even though the catcher might have the same idea, the fact that the pitcher is the one making the shot, it makes more sense to have him be able to tell what shot to throw.

Yeah some of this stuff just sucks. It takes the humanity and teamwork out of the game. Next third base coaches will disappear because a manager can just tell them from the dugout. Umpires will disappear because computers can do that. But we forget the human part of the game is part of the game. Players overcoming and dealing with the physical limitations is part of the entertainment of the “game” here! I mean, eventually we’re just going to be sitting watching robots play each other and no one will care.

Basset on the Jays does the same thing, because he has 7 pitches, and with the pitch clock there's not enough time for the catcher to cycle through all of them if he wants to throw a specific pitch.
