- With The Strangers: Prey at Night coming soon, we thought it was a good time to take another look at the 2008 film, The Strangers. It has Liv Tyler, that guy from Underworld, masks, and of course... sins.
Next week: A couple of action sins videos.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

"Because you were home" I'm going to be completely honest, even if I was home I wouldn't answer the door unless I ordered pizza. ._.
RockBeauty :3 exactly man they did all this jus cuz ppl were home so what would happen if they said nothing would they jus fuck off and leave or jus try To break in?
@@LavaioToxic999 the movie was based on a group of robbers that would call to the door and ask for someone. If none answers the door, they break in
@@maryy2077 and if someone did answer they’d just stalk them then still kill em lol Df either way they’re getting killed
@@LavaioToxic999 haha no, if someone is there they don’t break in. It’s based in an experience from the director’s childhood. He said “As a kid, I lived in a house on a street in the middle of nowhere. One night, while our parents were out, somebody knocked on the front door and my little sister answered it. At the door were some people asking for somebody who didn't live there. We later found out that these people were knocking on doors in the area and, if no one was home, breaking into the houses.”
@@maryy2077 oh wow damn. Shit these killers in the movie seem different it’s like whether you answer or you don’t you’ll die either way
"Get out of the car?! GET OUT OF THE CAR?! Just drive around the truck dumbass!" - I felt that in my heart lool, like for real what were they thinking?
If I'm remembering the movie correctly, the Strangers had already slashed their tires. So they were probably thinking there was no way they were gonna outrun/outmaneuver another vehicle, and that they had no chance of surviving a direct hit from a large pickup truck.
Oh cool, that makes more sense. I haven't seen the movie yet, so when that came up I was baffled by that illogical decision-making lol.
to be fair they still make a lot of dumb mistakes. That just happened to be one of the lesser ones.
Sub - Zero yeah, I agree. I think a lot of the minor mistakes can be chalked up to the fact that average people react terribly in these types of situations, but the "you stay here while I run into the dark woods to look for a radio that may or may not be there" part just about ruined the movie for me.
The characters were in such a good position (barricaded in a room with a shotgun pointed at the door), and they had no reason to leave. But I guess the writer had to find some way to advance the plot lol.
froggyman218 yea all 4 of their tires were flat. This cinemasins guy is jumping to conclusions
Scary because it's random; no reason for them doing it to them except for fun. This is the scariest element of the movie in my opinion, it could happen to anyone.
Amar Original this is why I watched this movie once, and never watched it again. I still think this is the scariest movie I have ever watched. I still vividly remember the first time I saw it. I have tried watching it since, but I end up turning it off.
Agreed Lucy. I felt the same way the first time I watched it. I don't even care about the mistakes in the editing and film making itself, it's right out terrifying. It can happen to anyone. I loved the mask of the bagged guy so much I dressed up as him for Halloween once. People loved it and recognized it immediately. Seriously a scary fucking movie, I don't care what anybody says :)
Well there is probably more to it then just that but in this film it doesn't explore their back stories on why they're so crazy
Yeah, it could happen in the city, or in any populated area. I honestly don’t know what I would do in this situation.
Isabella Scott id either give up, shoot the intruders, call the cops, hide out somewhere, run DEE fuck away, or fight my way out.
Kristen tripped over... darkness? 😂😂😂
xoxoKimonexoxo honestly, this would probably happen to me even if I wasn’t wearing heels

Super sad when you consider that BB is a regional brand. If they weren't in Texas, OK, AR, or La, they paid a premium for it. Dubya had to have it shipped specially to the White House.
One "sin" I've never heard anyone mention is how the boy on the phone was so frantic in the police call, yet so calm when he actually walked in the house and saw the carnage. When did he develop all that urgency?
PG No 13 when she yelled at him at the end
Great point...unless he was initially in shock.

The "because you were home" part is fucking gold. So disturbing
Effervvescent for real though! That shook me more than the whole movie.
As someone who has lived in an "out of the way" house like this, it freaked me out so badly. I fully applaud that they had such a simple reasoning for you to NOT answer your door.
i don’t get that line...someone explain please
Effervvescent I’m confused why did these strangers try to kill them. I haven’t watched it but I’m not interested in watching so it’s fine to spoiler it :p
They were just killing people for fun, but they needed victims. Happens to be they found the perfect people who actually answered the door and lived in a somewhat secluded area where no one would disturb them. Usually in movies there is a motive for characters to kill or you find out they're mentally disturbed etc., but in this scenario it's just saying that sometimes there is no real reason why people kill others.
tldr; "because you were home"
"Liv Tyler holds her beer like she's a cowboy at a saloon."

"What you are about to see is inspired by true events"
Me, watching this at night: okay yeah never mind
Alyssa Corrigan When the writer was a boy and someone knocked on his door asking for someone who didn't live there. That's the gist of the true events.
Alyssa Corrigan they should say "very loosely based"
This wasnt even a good rendition of the true events. it was based on the keddy murders, but this doesnt even follow it, like at all. other than that strange people murdered someone in the house, thats all they got right.
This reply is seven months late but it is actually inspired by three robbers knocking on the door of the screenwriter's house lol. True story my ass
If so i was like they done a lot of stupid things to get killed. May the real people rip though.
The narrator at the beginning of the movie sounds like the person that does the intro for Law & Order: SVU.
Gears Starting here are there stories *dun* *dun*
Sounded like Lawrence Fishburne
In the criminal justice system, sexually based defenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories. *dun dun*
Gretchen DG you read my mind
Gears Starting
It's probably him too. But sadly the narrator is not credited for the movie.
I get it's supposed to be scary, but when she said "Because you were home" I laughed my ass off. She said it so simply like it was obvious too! XD

Tbh the only scary part for me was when they said “because you were home”
Jesus Valadez this is why the housing market collapsed! It’s all in 2008, this movie capitalized of people’s fear of being home alone, and people needed the comfort of others. Suddenly, supply far exceeds demand, and you’ve got an economic crisis on your hands!
i didn’t get that part? why was it so scary
DonShifty it shows that sometimes there's no real reason why people kill. It doesn't have to be out of anger or mental illness. I think it gives you a creepy feeling that this could happen to any of us.
CZcams Man very true lol should have said it was the most terrifying moment in my opinion cause it shows it could happen to anyone
+Isabelladenise01 Killing someone for no reason is by definition a symptom of mental illness. Bruh.

NHK LM watching cinemacsins is not watching movies
Jacksfilms Number one fan Of course, but I don't really watch movies so this is pretty much the only time I ever see movies. Even if it's just a bunch of flaws in 10 minutes lol. This is where most of my movie knowledge comes from.
NHK LM yes, it is
NHK LM I use cinemasins to decide if it's worth watching a movie lol
These are awful ideas, you should form your own opinions on movies - Cinemasins is fine entertainment but don't use their videos to judge whether you go see movie, otherwise you'll never see a movie in your life
Leave the ice cream out.....do you want ants, because that is how you get ants
Nailed it!
Max Selcow that reference was in the pilot episode, so that’s probably the first Archer reference
When I was younger, I once heard a knock at the door at 10pm. I could only see the person's shape through the blurred glass we have in the door - a large, dark figure pressed closely to the door. Without opening the door, I asked who it was. He simply said "The Milkman" and left. This film terrified me more than any other horror film especially when I was younger - seeing it on CinemaSins it actually isn't as creepy as I remember (Definitely after seeing all the plot holes), but I still find it one of the most chilling premises of a horror film: "Because you were home". Nothing unworldly. Nothing paranormal. No reason. The fact that your home, the place you are supposed to be safest in, could be targeted for no reason at all, scares me to this day. The prolonged shot in the kitchen is one of the reasons I don't like being downstairs on my own at night... it still niggles at me that someone might be behind me. Overall the film could be much better, but at its core, it strikes a nerve that everyone can relate to in some way or another, which I guess is the overall aim of a horror film. You forget jump scares, but haunting feelings like that last for a long time.
I hope for the next time you do a Cinemasins on a scary movie, You should do: *Everything Wrong With Final Destination (2000)*

_(Don't take the sin counter too seriously, it's just a joke.)_
Yes!!!!
This movie was never based on any events. The director once had someone knock on his door when he was a kid and ask for someone who didn't live there. That's it.
Ben Brown omg that's creepy😟
That's why it says "inspired by".
How did 'Knock at the Door' inspire 'Elaborate Series of Events with Masked Killers Torturing and Messing with People for an Hour?'
Also, it was INSPIRED BY 'Funny Games' and nothing more.
You're putting way more stock in "inspired by" than Hollywood does (which is to say, ANY). All it means is that "[x] made the writer think of an idea that turned into the screenplay". But it wasn't just a knock at the door. It was home invasions in general. So "knock on door" > "home invasion" > "what if" >>>>>> finished screenplay.
The whole gimmick is that is like a real thing. It's not.
Again- it's just 'Funny Games' with masks.
Then again, 'The Purge' is just 'The Strangers' mixed with 'Assault on Precinct 13,' but with Backstory.
8:48 Once upon a time, they're was a ice cream that was never eaten, nor fallen, even in a horror movie. Ting.

An honest thank you for including subtitles for the lines spoken by the characters, and in cursive no less to distinguish them from Jeremy's subtitles!
Very good thinking!
MaiAolei uhhh the ones near 6:35 were in italics, not cursive
Is there a difference?
I'm German, and the tilted font is called cursive here.
I thought about this too, and I strongly agree. It's very considerate. By the way, we say "cursive" in Denmark as well.
Italics are slanted to the right and is a letter effect whilst cursive is a font type

6 minutes in, 57 sins,

I just don't get why you'd base a fictional horror movie on actual events. It's been 3 years after the attack (if the movie's narreading is to be trusted), but still, isn't it a bit disrespectful to say "Oh, that gruesome slaughter and torture of innocent people last year (my guess for how long this movie has been in production is 2 years), let's make a movie about those events!" "Oh, so do you want to make a documentary?" "Fuck no, we're doing a mediocre horror flick to cash off of other people's suffering!"
Edit: After researching some more, apparently the "true events" that this movie was based on were that some alleged burglars knocked on the writer's door when they were a child and asked for someone who wasn't there. And the closest thing to "true events" are the Keddie murders from 1981 but no one who produced the movie has confirmed that those had anything to do with the movie. in fact, the only statement about that that I could find was what the writer said.
If you base a horror movie on a real homicide, that's one thing, but why even bother with that narreading intro if that is a half-truth at best, but more likely a lie? Calling two sins for an unneccesary "based on real events" lie/half-truth and another one for just not making any sense whatsoever to have that in there.
"Inspired by true events" or the like is movie marketing speak for "we made up a half-assed horror/drama/etc film that tangentially looks related in a loose way to an actual event that occurred in human history and can thus trick the audience into believing the film actually happened, this earning sympathy and revenue".
As you can imagine, it's a very time efficient language.
Ah, that makes... "sense", in a way, for marketing strategies atleast. And I get that this trick would earn more revenue, but in what way would this lead to more sympathy? For the main characters I guess, in some way.
But my initial reaction was "What sick bastard makes an horror film aiming to entertain, riddled with clichés, based on the actual suffering of other people about a year after the (allegedly gruesome) murder happened?"
Worst part is that what actually happened made a little more sense than what happened in the movie. The burglars knocked on their door and everyone else's. Anyone who didn't answer had their homes broken into. These people were picked for being home despite being at the end of the street. No one else was home a little after midnight?
Also, the opening shot shows that they're clearly in an actual neighborhood. No one saw or heard of this crap happening? No one called the police?
"inspired by true events' just means that some real event gave them the idea (was the inspiration for the movie).
If it said 'based on true events' then it is meant to be somewhat true to said events (meant to be based off what happened).
You could have someone attempt to break into your house then fuck off, and then because of that you get the idea to make home alone (lets pretend that home alone doesn't already exist) and you can say it was inspired by true events.
Speaking of home invasion movies, I'm thinking you should do Everything Wrong with You're Next
