- Eight years after the Assault on Precinct 13 remake, the director and star naturally got together for a sequel. But after a few script rewrites, they decided to just market it as a completely new standalone film, called The Purge. Here are its sins.
Thursday: Sins of a sequel you've been demanding ever since we did the first one.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

Those kids, especially the son, were the worst part of the movie.

Manly Man hm
The movie was the worst part about the movie. And I don't care if it contradicts itself, because it's fucking true. And you know it.
Watch "When They Cry". Not only are the kids normal, but likable. Which makes it all the more horrifying as the village curse slowly turns them into serial killers.
Why would a house with a lockdown system have the power be able to be cut from the outside?
okay... i have seen 6 youtubers that i'm subbed to in a day comment on things i'm watching, today is a weird day.
Yeah I had the same question. Also when Charlie enters the code it is not the same code that Ethan Hawke entered the first time
WingChroniam or maybe they just got an opinion and want to comment
Because the premise of this movie is stupid to begin with, and they needed a contrived way for the film to get more tense.
So...How did the rich neighbors never invite the people they hate to their purge party to kill them...it's like obvious... this family they hate they could have killed ages ago...Also none of these neighbors hated each other either? Hard to believe...In this world the Mortuary business must be more powerful then Gasoline, Oil and Nuclear Arms...
I'm giving cinemasins one sin for not sinning the fact that the mother let her neighbors live... I mean, the purge happens every year, what makes she think that her neighbors won't try to kill her again next year?
she probably didn't want to be like those murderers at the purge but idk she's dumb
it would effect the value of her house if everyone in the street was murdered in that house
Legit. How could she let them walk out. Esp the ring leader cookie making one. She needed to be put down. 😂😂
Poppy she did kill that one at the last minute

Another sin: the homeless guy hiding then immediately screaming for someone to offer him shelter, giving away his position to the people who are chasing him.

if the Purge actually happened i'd just rob an Apple store
lol, same... I would only think about it considering their would probably be other people trying to kill me-
Who would blow your brains out immediately, cause why not? +1 Sin
I’d just wait till the day after to by it off some idiot who was dumb/brave enough to rob the some place during the purge. But also I’m assuming apple have like fucking militants guarding the store.
Maybe, but how would you make it past the iBarricade for the low price of $99999999.99?
@@unicornsprinkles3277 Exactly if the purge was real big companies would hire and train guards to protect their products for purge day
and why so much focus on murder? Wouldn't robbery be more prevalent?
I mean think about it. On this one night, you and some buddies could make off with a fucking BANK VAULT and the cops wouldn't give a shit. Makes way more sense then just killing some guy you don't like that much and being forced to attend his boring ass funeral.
It's to add fear
They drop a line in the second movie about how the banks move the money (where I don't know but that must mean they can't do anything with cash for at least a week before and after the purge). I agree though the whole thing with it being mostly murder people do makes no sense, maybe I just have a high opinion on people but I doubt that many would jump straight to murder. Hell it seems the ones who based a new religion around it are the rich who pray before they kill someone, and hire people to kidnap folks for them to kill. Seriously with the stuff in the second movie it made it seem more like Hostel then what the film should be aiming towards, also sucks how in the second film we don't get any fan service seeing the rich people watching other rich people purge getting murdered. I mean fuck the least they could do is have them lined up and executed since they are such horrible people but instead they let them get away. Still I liked the second film more then the first cause the second was just a Punisher film but they never call the main guy Frank Castle.
And rape.. In this day and age it should be more common on Purge Night
Njjar Malak
I assume that is why they have the stuff about "cleansing one's soul" via purging. Try to rationalize how they are doing the right thing by killing. If you notice though the people doing the most killing tend to be wealthy. I mean they pay folks to round up the lower class to hunt and pay the families of people so they can kill them in the safety of their homes.
Am I the only one who watches these without seeing the movie?
Nope, me too!

why is it that main characters always survive getting shot or stabbed, sometimes even multiple times. but the bad guy one scratch and hes dead.
Movie cliche
gudhaxer41343 ding
The most annoying gunshot cliché to me is whenever Denzel Washington gets shot. It doesn't matter how many times or where the bullets land, he just takes em all in stride and never so much as flinches.
I think its more of the reverse actually. But people in movies bad guy or not have some potent survivability traits.
actually the main character died.
The whole concept of this movie is utterly mind numbing. All crime is legal for 12 hours. Ok, not a terrible starting concept. People then turn to killing homeless people. WHY!? Isn't there a bank nearby or something. You have all year to plan, get explosives, etc. why on earth would you possibly waste time on people whose death offers you nothing to gain. This movie could have been phenomenal if it was about people who in the 12 hours picked good targets to set them up financially until the next purge. They wouldn't have to work a day other than planning for their next purge. It could have been a great heist movie about people planning and capitalizing on the 12 hours, and even betraying each other because, hell why not? It could have been a smart, crime thriller but instead they made it about a family with the dumbest son on the face of the earth.
True, first when i heard the concept of the film i was actually excited but well, critics happened lol
Even on top of the heist part, the second stage of the movie could be them escaping the banks and avoiding the murdering people walking the streets. I'd go see that if it was the purge, it as a horror movie is just stupid.
I would probably enjoy watching that movie. If this movie was right and the law was the only thing stopping us from murdering each other, then we'd never have survived long enough to make those laws in the first place.
Some people just want to see the world burn.
Even the starting concept makes no sense. How does making crime legal once a year stop it for the rest of the year? And how does that kind of legislation get passed? Or cause a massive drop in unemployment? This movie was doomed to a lapse in logic from the start. It also doesn't help that they chose Michael Bay as one of the producers.
"All crime is legal"

Also wouldn't people this rich take a holiday to another country for this one day?
Wouldn't the neighborhood hire private security contractors?
Wouldn't they have an invulnerable panic room in the house?
Wouldn't they have some sort of agreement with the neighbors to set up crossfires between houses?
How many people would be willing to storm armored, fortified houses with clear fields of fire just to kill some random guy and how many of them would be alive and willing the second year?
Why don't you have a portable generator?
I won't criticize them for not have anti-personnel mines but I will look at them sternly over my glasses
They'd be leaving the house unguarded. EVERYTHING stolen.
Private security contractors would betray you for easy money. Remember, all crime is legal.
That'd make too much sense.
Again, the neighbors would just betray you.
This movie's premise is dumber than hell. Basically, it's trying to say that everyone in America wants to kill everyone.
MetalGearRexPilot
Only pay the private security if you survive, not hard to set up. Store goods somewhere safe.
Actually rich people would just leave the country fullstop. London would be full of ex-patriots.
SerPinkKnight Transfer of all finances to a foreign country? Yeah, forgot you could do that XD Everyone would move to Europe. Weeaboos would try to go to Japan and then be disappointed.

Plus the neighborhoods hatred of the family makes NO SENSE! They keep making a big deal about how they “became rich off of the neighborhood” but these guys were literally selling the security system the neighbors used to stay safe during the purge. Why is it a bad thing that they made something to make sure you didn’t die? And even if you didn’t want the security system, they weren’t making anyone buy it?
And they themselves were not killing those who didn't buy it, it was fucking retarded hatred.
@@ohinianahiuhki9088 it's called jealousy and greed
Yeah, but as with anything this channel reviews, the movies try to patch the holes or something otherwise the movie turns ten minutes long. Same with the bad guy or evil entity; 'you were right behind him and could have taken him out right then but are choosing not to so the main character can take you out later' bits.
It's also not like they were sold shotty systems, this makes them sound like they were being sold lemons

What I learned from this movie 97.9% of people want to kill rather than steal money from a bank.
I think they move all money from banks and stuff before the purge, but I get your point. If the purge really did exist, people wouldn't just go on a murder spree. It's not just the law that stops people from killing others. It's morally wrong and most people wouldn't do it even if they got a prize for it. And since it's so morally wrong the people who DO want to kill would still be discrete about it so they wouldn't get cut out from society once the purge ends. I mean, would you be happy to have a one-on-one lunch with your neighbor if they killed during the purge? I don't think so. And finally, murderers who kill for fun often get a kick out of it being wrong. It wouldn't be as satisfying to kill if it was legal. And psychopaths don't follow rules like this.
So basically, if this was realistic stealing and petty crimes would increase during the purge, but murders would be happening all year round at the same rate as now.
All banks and big businesses would have heavy security in place so realistically it would mostly be small businesses people would steal from. But yeah, I think there would be a lot more theft and petty crime than murder.
Jasmine Haskins yeah cause the banks would just leave the money there 🤦🏻♂️ how stupid are you

The Purge looks like a scary movie, but the story is just weird. If you were a mom with a husband and kids, and you weren't planning on killing anyone, why don't you fking fly a plane to Canada or some place and keep your family safe? The family in the movie looks rich enough to buy some plane tickets!!
Well I'd guess the demand for flights would be so high that the tickets would be unaffordable and there wouldn't be any room left for those who missed out! I'd imagine this purge would provoke an exodus of millions of people and only a certain amount of people could be able to get out. This family had their own home defense system and probably thought it would be enough to keep them safe! You only need to use your imagination to fill in these plot holes!
ElaborateTiger Well, yeah, good point. But if The Purge were real I would fly to another country like 2 months before The Purge just to be safe and most people don't fly that early I bet. Better yet, me and my family would probably just MOVE to another country considering that my dad works at an airport.
Oblox
When something as bad as the Purge is about to occur; I'd imagine people would want to leave as early as possible so the prices could already be huge even 2 months before! Besides people have jobs to do and probably can't afford to leave for multiple months without losing their job. Your best bet would probably have to be living abroad all together; since this Purge is a clear violation of human rights; you could probably seek asylum somewhere and hope to make a living abroad.
ElaborateTiger I think I would rather lose my job then lose my life.
you missed the part were the girl was in her school uniform the purge takes place on a school day the dad probably thought it best to not have his daughter miss out on school, and after seeing how he acts in the movie he seems serious about his daughter education he wouldn't want her to miss out on days weeks or months of school every year.
CinemaSins making everything into a cliche, cliche
I love how this movie just implies that people literally only have the rule of law keeping them from turning into murderous psychopaths, like if you had the chance to get away with any crime would you either rob a bank, steal as much shit as you could, or just murder a homeless guy for literally no gain? Most normal people would probably pick the first two as again they have nothing to gain from murder unless it's someone they have serious issues with, most people aren't just going to be bloodthirsty lunatics and even then, those people would most likely not have the patience to hold out for an entire year and would likely commit the crime before then.
Also, disregarding the rest of the series that "cleansing us of our hatred" line near the end is way too cultish for me, it sounds too forced and comes off as "Sudden movie villain trying too hard to be scary" then again this could probably be said for the entire movie as the villains come off way more cult like than they really need to, the stupid masks and the blonde guy trying to act like some eloquent cult leader, it was something you see once and think "wow that's pretty terrifying" then you realize it seems kinda forced.
Also this is a yearly event, she's just gonna ignore that her neighbors will probably try to kill her next year?
Imagine you try to kill a fellow employee on the purge and failed and your office cubicals are right next to each other or trying to kill your boss after the purge your definitely fired
Masks are allowed though

thats why if u was to do anything like that you better make sure you hit your mark and who ever else is there unless you want to quit the next day

One of the only things our moral compass naturally guides us away from is physically injuring someone else simply because of the mental issues that come with actually seeing a being like yourself in pain, which is one of the main reasons sociopaths will murder, because they can't make that some connection and one of the only thing that does stop a sociopath is, you guessed it, rules and regulations set by society.

That crap's expensive, man.
Then before you steal the first anime you notice that you have 50 bullets in your head...
Cake Plex Because tons of people will be defending the video store.
Plus, I do have a handgun to defend myself.
Brian Griffin Expensive Asian cartoons.*
Still a bad idea
Brian Griffin Woah, look over there! It's a joke, and it looks like it's flying right over your head!
If the purge were real...
Time to stop by Gamestop.
LOL!!!!!!! 😂😂😂
yup
Well yeah free games every crime is legal even rape HELL just do this 10 minutes before the purge steal every damn game and console you can find
+Spongey I'll kill the cashier and be like GTA Style
+Spongey More like Best Buy
Love the sighs the most, since they represent my literal reaction at those moments
"Tony from sales hates you ,you are truly hilarious 😂
I'd probably dig a hole and hide in it in the middle of the forest :/
Amar Original or have an entirely hidden room entrance that no one knows about underground
DREAMER CREATIONS
Id go boating by myself
Or dig a deep hole, make your very own bunker, take some food and water, and kill anyone who approaches your tiny fort.
Amitabha Kusari unless they for some fucking reason have a grenade ur good
Amitabha Kusari Tru, I personally don't get how the homeless dont start to hide out for days before this event.
This movie is all about murder but honestly on Purge night I'd just steal EVERYTHING from the bookstore
and Peggy SO TRILL!!! I would do the same, then I would border it up with all the bookcases and have my family hide in their for 12 hours and wait for purge night to end. AND THEN TAKE ALL THE WINGS OF FIRE BOOKS!!!
and Peggy Finally! someone said it
Why wouldn't you? Books can be so expensive that sometimes all I can do is stroke the cover and walk away...
and Peggy I can't go anywhere without seeming my pham
and Peggy YASSSSSSS
"I'm not coming in on a Saturday to play catchup" LMAO!!!
Also, I find it interesting he can afford this expensive house with the incredible security system only to go and buy a Taurus revolver.
If I were in the purge?
I would eat a kitkat.
Without splitting it in half.
You little rebel. I like you
Rainbow Laughing jack Hehe
*Maniacal laughter*
In the Purge? Pft I do it all the time
Rainbow Laughing jack You're sick in the head!
You know what just hit me?
There have to be some members of emergency services that say "Fuck this" and try and help people during the Purge anyway.
A cop (or a few cops) roaming the streets with SWAT gear looking to stop murders; an EMT(s) or firefighter(s) with hopefully reinforced vehicles and a couple guns on-hand going around doing what they do. Hell, this sort of situation can even be played for a little dark humor; an incredibly dedicated security guard or clerk, sitting in front of a store or bank entrance with a shotgun, a metal bat, miscellaneous foodstuffs and a beer.
Why don't we get a movie about those people?
Why AREN'T we getting a movie about those people?
Might seem them in the next film coming out perhaps :)
I would enjoy seeing that.
I think they do the same than everyone else... in this shit
I just finished reading War Hospital about real life doctors trying to help people in the Bosnian War, this should be a movie on its own, but I am totally on board with the idea for the purge, if the purge was not so ridiculous.
They should have focused on the wider purge, not just one neighbourhood
9:52 I got a fucking KPop Idol ad before the jumpscare and I gotta say its scarier than that smiling mask.
You have one night to purge and your gonna hang out in front of a house hoping they let someone out, and just sit on a swing
Did no one ever think of killing the person who approved this law???
Really?
if the rules are like the 1st and 2nd purge the people with that idea would have a hell of a time because they are *untouchable* just like the triage van sure you can try to attack them but the are *off limits* ....so you would have to have a lot of fire power to get through a lot of well armed people protecting them but if the rules are like in the 3rd purge movie where the creators of the purge and higher powered people is also allowed to be targeted/killed then the chances are better but be prepared to expect them to be heavily protected just like in the movie you would either need to get very lucky ...have a crap load of fire power or a lot of friends to help you to have even a small chance to succeed
Even if someone did kill the person who approved the law it wouldn't suddenly go away the government would still have to appeal the law for it to go away.
@@astrom8674 Did you ever you know consider taking down the whole government in a civil war which would be aided by the European countries which would certainly not be allies with an America that has a purge.
@@austinblackburn8095 Yeah I did but I was just responding to the original comment which suggested killing one person not the whole government, even though destroying the government would get rid of the purge.
@@astrom8674 actually if you destroyed the government you would not just stop the purge you would stop all of the laws
if it was the purge I would stay up one second past my bedtime
Master Chef OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
That's too far
We've got a rebel!
Master Chef ooooooo bad ass
lol
Another sin: on amazon prime, the subtitles call the leader “Polite Leader”
At least the Rick & Morty version actually made some sense. 🤦♂️
The first thing wrong with the movie is the premise that it would decrease crime. It would actually have the opposite effect, because people don't have the capacity to delay gratification, especially not for a year. And once people got a taste of breaking the law without negative consequences, they wouldn't be able to stop.
Look at children. If you give in to their begging for candy in the checkout line even once, they will NEVER stop begging. You'll have to say no dozens of times and endure more intense begging and whining to get it to stop. Most parents these days don't have the emotional stamina, because they themselves cannot delay gratification.
It would also break society down. Just because an action is illegal one day, then legal the next, then illegal the next day, doesn't change the fact that it's just plain WRONG EVERY day. If the makers of these movies had any clue about psychology or morals, they could make movies that would make people think more deeply.
TobyCat This one especially! Think about it: being rude is legal 24/7, 365, but most of us don't put up with disrespect because of that. How is something as emotionally charged as murder going to be any better?
Sure, okay, I know I can't legally get revenge, but if one of my neighbors killed my dog or stole something of mine during the purge, do you think I'm gonna forget that just because it's not illegal? No! I'm going to hold it over their heads forever, or try to sneakily get revenge sometime during the rest of the year even though it's illegal, or stock up on explosives and blow up their house in that precious time just before the purge officially starts.
And what, are my other neighbors gonna report me for bending the rules to get back at the local dog killer?
What is disappointing is that this could have been a pretty cool, thought-provoking story if the creators had spent some time actually thinking things through. Seeing all the perfectly innocent yet illegal things people want to do could be fun, like buying a ton of weed or stealing books or opening a restaurant without a permit. Examining how people rank certain crimes according to their own moral compass instead of fear of the law. Watching people clean up and go about their daily lives after the purge. How do you just get on the elevator with Steve from accounting when you saw him raping a kid at sunrise just a few hours ago? Or sit next to Becky at lunch when she was ready to fight you to the death over your great grandma's jewelry?
There have to be a lot of people with PTSD now, is it addressed, or does society try to sweep that under the rug until 75% of the population has a complete nervous breakdown? There have to be some good Samaritans out there building fortified homeless shelters by now. Do religious institutions see more or less attacks than others? What happens when half the banks in the city have been robbed of all their cash?!
And even though we're told that somehow, this has actually decreased crime the rest of the year, has everyday law enforcement changed in this other world? Aren't there still corrupt cops arresting innocent people just to fill their quota? If I had to include that ridiculous aspect of the story, I'd see crime dipping down a little the first few years, until more and more people are getting used to the idea of murder being enjoyable and cleansing. Then suddenly homicide rates spike dramatically across the country, as now people have a real blood lust and can't wait for one day a year. Do they start have more and more purge nights a year to make up for it, until society just falls apart?
I guess a little bit of classism was addressed, what with the homeless being seen as deserving targets and the wealthy family thinking their kind is supposed to be above this even while their own neighbors plotted against them. But I feel this could have gone further; what do people think about the fact that this policy literally rewards the most violent people and punishes the most gentle? Don't most governments like their people docile and obedient? Maybe we have a moment with the lawmaker who originally proposed it, and it turns out their goal was for all the most violent people to end up killing each other, but they realize it failed horribly because, duh, people who like killing made friends with the other people who like killing, and they formed their own little groups to kill people who can't/won't fight back!
Wow, sorry for the long response! I guess once I read your comments I saw an opportunity to cleanse myself of my hatred for this movie... Hey wait a second!
***** Yeah, but as we see in this movie, the bad people aren't really killing each other. They're teaming up to hunt down homeless veterans and terrorize suburbanites. That's why this total anarchy thing is such a flawed idea, even within the movie. I'd think that if you really want bad people to only kill other bad people, you should lock them up in an arena, gladiator style. Not give them free license to kill any of the thousands of innocent people who can't defend themselves.
***** Haha, it's cool. (Yeah, looks like quite a few people have had the gladiator idea before us...)
13gothMoth No need to apologize. You basically addressed what plagued my mind on the whole movie, basically. I am surprised with all crime being legal, they didn't have a sequence where people in Washington D.C. just straight up light the entire city on fire with the politicians in the burn pile... :\
Also, the movie didn't really touch the opposing opinion of the purge. A separate faction of sorts that thought this law of the purge was completely and utterly ridiculous and *quite literally* insane... Surprised the international community didn't have a say in this either since this law seems to also be a huge human rights violation in general.
The Purge is like Black Friday😝
Lol, yea😂
Hell
So fucking true
Pretty much
+MikeFla black friday is way, way more violent :^)
Purge was a good idea, but it shouldn't have just focused on the family, or kept them in a setting like their house. I'd have rather seen it where they are on the "move" and have to survive the night that way.
*logo comes for one scene*
Cinema Sins : UNACCEPTABLE
If the purge was real I'd get my telescope and camp out at the border of Canada and check things out
lmao
why not? because i'm pretty sure it would be in use, plus they specifically say no use of certain types of weapons, im sure a tank falls in that catagory
+Brandon Cripps no cops right? So who would stop me?
I'm planning of doing that pretty soon. America will find some way to burn itself to the ground
+Trymex uh.. If you can break into a high guarded military facility that will be even more highly guarded on purge night then why aren't you already ruler of the world?
What would I do during the purge?
Fill a tanker truck with diet coke and crash it into the Mentos factory
You savage.
That just made my day.
Bad ass 😎
Classic80sStuff I would eat Oreos without milk
and go on the Disney website without my parents' permission
Classic80sStuff Oh my god,that.
That right there.
That is fucking amazing, everyone else here is just being a fucking idiot but that could cause some serious destruction and hilarity.
Sin: that children aren't excluded as victims of the purge. That would make total sense as a rule but then the movie couldn't exist.
"thanks" and "whatever" have me doubled-over laughing
Hey the black guy actually lived through this movie!
Kai and kory Chameleonpower yay
But the black guy was homeless, so it's still racist.
Did not realize that until I saw your comment lol
Kai and kory Chameleonpower
OPEN UP ITS THE FBI
Nathen Hutchison, wrong, its not racist.
