  • Eight years after the Assault on Precinct 13 remake, the director and star naturally got together for a sequel. But after a few script rewrites, they decided to just market it as a completely new standalone film, called The Purge. Here are its sins.
    Thursday: Sins of a sequel you've been demanding ever since we did the first one.
    Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

      They drop a line in the second movie about how the banks move the money (where I don't know but that must mean they can't do anything with cash for at least a week before and after the purge). I agree though the whole thing with it being mostly murder people do makes no sense, maybe I just have a high opinion on people but I doubt that many would jump straight to murder. Hell it seems the ones who based a new religion around it are the rich who pray before they kill someone, and hire people to kidnap folks for them to kill. Seriously with the stuff in the second movie it made it seem more like Hostel then what the film should be aiming towards, also sucks how in the second film we don't get any fan service seeing the rich people watching other rich people purge getting murdered. I mean fuck the least they could do is have them lined up and executed since they are such horrible people but instead they let them get away. Still I liked the second film more then the first cause the second was just a Punisher film but they never call the main guy Frank Castle.

If you notice though the people doing the most killing tend to be wealthy. I mean they pay folks to round up the lower class to hunt and pay the families of people so they can kill them in the safety of their homes.

    The whole concept of this movie is utterly mind numbing. All crime is legal for 12 hours. Ok, not a terrible starting concept. People then turn to killing homeless people. WHY!? Isn't there a bank nearby or something. You have all year to plan, get explosives, etc. why on earth would you possibly waste time on people whose death offers you nothing to gain. This movie could have been phenomenal if it was about people who in the 12 hours picked good targets to set them up financially until the next purge. They wouldn't have to work a day other than planning for their next purge. It could have been a great heist movie about people planning and capitalizing on the 12 hours, and even betraying each other because, hell why not? It could have been a smart, crime thriller but instead they made it about a family with the dumbest son on the face of the earth.

    What I learned from this movie 97.9% of people want to kill rather than steal money from a bank.

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db Před 6 lety +65

      I think they move all money from banks and stuff before the purge, but I get your point. If the purge really did exist, people wouldn't just go on a murder spree. It's not just the law that stops people from killing others. It's morally wrong and most people wouldn't do it even if they got a prize for it. And since it's so morally wrong the people who DO want to kill would still be discrete about it so they wouldn't get cut out from society once the purge ends. I mean, would you be happy to have a one-on-one lunch with your neighbor if they killed during the purge? I don't think so. And finally, murderers who kill for fun often get a kick out of it being wrong. It wouldn't be as satisfying to kill if it was legal. And psychopaths don't follow rules like this.
      So basically, if this was realistic stealing and petty crimes would increase during the purge, but murders would be happening all year round at the same rate as now.

    • @kerryrose4870
      @kerryrose4870 Před 6 lety +21

    The Purge looks like a scary movie, but the story is just weird. If you were a mom with a husband and kids, and you weren't planning on killing anyone, why don't you fking fly a plane to Canada or some place and keep your family safe? The family in the movie looks rich enough to buy some plane tickets!!

    • @ElaborateTiger
      @ElaborateTiger Před 9 lety +25

      Well I'd guess the demand for flights would be so high that the tickets would be unaffordable and there wouldn't be any room left for those who missed out! I'd imagine this purge would provoke an exodus of millions of people and only a certain amount of people could be able to get out. This family had their own home defense system and probably thought it would be enough to keep them safe! You only need to use your imagination to fill in these plot holes!

    • @xlights4622
      @xlights4622 Před 9 lety +24

      ElaborateTiger Well, yeah, good point. But if The Purge were real I would fly to another country like 2 months before The Purge just to be safe and most people don't fly that early I bet. Better yet, me and my family would probably just MOVE to another country considering that my dad works at an airport.

    • @ElaborateTiger
      @ElaborateTiger Před 9 lety +4

      When something as bad as the Purge is about to occur; I'd imagine people would want to leave as early as possible so the prices could already be huge even 2 months before! Besides people have jobs to do and probably can't afford to leave for multiple months without losing their job. Your best bet would probably have to be living abroad all together; since this Purge is a clear violation of human rights; you could probably seek asylum somewhere and hope to make a living abroad.

    I love how this movie just implies that people literally only have the rule of law keeping them from turning into murderous psychopaths, like if you had the chance to get away with any crime would you either rob a bank, steal as much shit as you could, or just murder a homeless guy for literally no gain? Most normal people would probably pick the first two as again they have nothing to gain from murder unless it's someone they have serious issues with, most people aren't just going to be bloodthirsty lunatics and even then, those people would most likely not have the patience to hold out for an entire year and would likely commit the crime before then.
    Also, disregarding the rest of the series that "cleansing us of our hatred" line near the end is way too cultish for me, it sounds too forced and comes off as "Sudden movie villain trying too hard to be scary" then again this could probably be said for the entire movie as the villains come off way more cult like than they really need to, the stupid masks and the blonde guy trying to act like some eloquent cult leader, it was something you see once and think "wow that's pretty terrifying" then you realize it seems kinda forced.
    Also this is a yearly event, she's just gonna ignore that her neighbors will probably try to kill her next year?

  • @Freebuscus

    The first thing wrong with the movie is the premise that it would decrease crime. It would actually have the opposite effect, because people don't have the capacity to delay gratification, especially not for a year. And once people got a taste of breaking the law without negative consequences, they wouldn't be able to stop.
    Look at children. If you give in to their begging for candy in the checkout line even once, they will NEVER stop begging. You'll have to say no dozens of times and endure more intense begging and whining to get it to stop. Most parents these days don't have the emotional stamina, because they themselves cannot delay gratification.

    • @Freebuscus
      @Freebuscus Před 9 lety +197

      It would also break society down. Just because an action is illegal one day, then legal the next, then illegal the next day, doesn't change the fact that it's just plain WRONG EVERY day. If the makers of these movies had any clue about psychology or morals, they could make movies that would make people think more deeply.

    • @13gothMoth
      @13gothMoth Před 9 lety +166

      TobyCat This one especially! Think about it: being rude is legal 24/7, 365, but most of us don't put up with disrespect because of that. How is something as emotionally charged as murder going to be any better?
      Sure, okay, I know I can't legally get revenge, but if one of my neighbors killed my dog or stole something of mine during the purge, do you think I'm gonna forget that just because it's not illegal? No! I'm going to hold it over their heads forever, or try to sneakily get revenge sometime during the rest of the year even though it's illegal, or stock up on explosives and blow up their house in that precious time just before the purge officially starts.
      And what, are my other neighbors gonna report me for bending the rules to get back at the local dog killer?
      What is disappointing is that this could have been a pretty cool, thought-provoking story if the creators had spent some time actually thinking things through. Seeing all the perfectly innocent yet illegal things people want to do could be fun, like buying a ton of weed or stealing books or opening a restaurant without a permit. Examining how people rank certain crimes according to their own moral compass instead of fear of the law. Watching people clean up and go about their daily lives after the purge. How do you just get on the elevator with Steve from accounting when you saw him raping a kid at sunrise just a few hours ago? Or sit next to Becky at lunch when she was ready to fight you to the death over your great grandma's jewelry?
      There have to be a lot of people with PTSD now, is it addressed, or does society try to sweep that under the rug until 75% of the population has a complete nervous breakdown? There have to be some good Samaritans out there building fortified homeless shelters by now. Do religious institutions see more or less attacks than others? What happens when half the banks in the city have been robbed of all their cash?!
      And even though we're told that somehow, this has actually decreased crime the rest of the year, has everyday law enforcement changed in this other world? Aren't there still corrupt cops arresting innocent people just to fill their quota? If I had to include that ridiculous aspect of the story, I'd see crime dipping down a little the first few years, until more and more people are getting used to the idea of murder being enjoyable and cleansing. Then suddenly homicide rates spike dramatically across the country, as now people have a real blood lust and can't wait for one day a year. Do they start have more and more purge nights a year to make up for it, until society just falls apart?
      I guess a little bit of classism was addressed, what with the homeless being seen as deserving targets and the wealthy family thinking their kind is supposed to be above this even while their own neighbors plotted against them. But I feel this could have gone further; what do people think about the fact that this policy literally rewards the most violent people and punishes the most gentle? Don't most governments like their people docile and obedient? Maybe we have a moment with the lawmaker who originally proposed it, and it turns out their goal was for all the most violent people to end up killing each other, but they realize it failed horribly because, duh, people who like killing made friends with the other people who like killing, and they formed their own little groups to kill people who can't/won't fight back!
      Wow, sorry for the long response! I guess once I read your comments I saw an opportunity to cleanse myself of my hatred for this movie... Hey wait a second!

    • @13gothMoth
      @13gothMoth Před 9 lety +65

      ***** Yeah, but as we see in this movie, the bad people aren't really killing each other. They're teaming up to hunt down homeless veterans and terrorize suburbanites. That's why this total anarchy thing is such a flawed idea, even within the movie. I'd think that if you really want bad people to only kill other bad people, you should lock them up in an arena, gladiator style. Not give them free license to kill any of the thousands of innocent people who can't defend themselves.

I am surprised with all crime being legal, they didn't have a sequence where people in Washington D.C. just straight up light the entire city on fire with the politicians in the burn pile... :\
      Also, the movie didn't really touch the opposing opinion of the purge. A separate faction of sorts that thought this law of the purge was completely and utterly ridiculous and *quite literally* insane... Surprised the international community didn't have a say in this either since this law seems to also be a huge human rights violation in general.
